Haven't told them yet.

So yeah, we argued and then
he said he was heading over

to Brokenwood to

Had that sort of

Oh, once or twice.

Next thing you know,

groins himself on a chair leg

(groans) Gina.

[Gina] I was right.

Heart trauma?

[Gina] Yes.

Okay, good, well, um,
file that with the coroner

and we can all get
on with our day.

No, you don't understand,

I was right in
more ways than one.

You must come and
I will explain.

(sighing) No, Gina, if it
is natural causes, it's fine-

This man, he didn't just die,

he was k*lled.

I'm getting changed
again, aren't I?

Yeah.

I was right about
the heart trauma,

but your theory about the
chair leg was not correct.

Well, actually
that was your theory.

Kristin, please,
this is serious.

The cause of the trauma
was not blunt force impact.

What, steel-tipped cowboy boots?

A b*llet or a b*llet
fragment to be precise.

This victim was sh*t.

(soft guitar music)

This tiny piece of twisted
metal was all it took,

lying in the aortic valve.

So you're saying
the entry point was-

The perineum.

Oh.

Oh, yeah, that's, ah.

Swollen, yes, luckily
he dressed to the left

or the damage would
have been worse.

(clears throat) That's, um,

that's not your typical b*llet
entry wound though, is it?

It was not the whole
b*llet, only part of it.

There must be another
fragment somewhere else,

a ricochet perhaps.

But this fragment
pierced the skin,

it entered the aortic artery
and crushed the heart valve

before coming to a rest.

Hence no exit wound.

Type of b*llet?

I'm guessing nine millimeters,
but we wait for the test.

So handgun, not r*fle?

We'll know more soon,
you want another look?

- No, no, thank you.
- I think we're good.

[Daniel] Good.

(soft guitar music)

(car rumbling quietly)

We sign, we say a
quick hello, we go,

no need to get the boils.

- Okay.
- (car doors clicking)

Oh, hello, weary travelers.

Tabatha.

Oh and you must be Beth, hello.

(Beth laughing)
Oh, look at you.

Still got this old thing, I see.

Some things don't change.

Hm, so it would seem.

Come with me, sweetheart.

Come along, Michael.

Here we are, make
yourselves comfortable.

- Tea?
- Thanks.

Ah, but we, ah,
we won't stay long.

Oh, nonsense, you've
come all this way.

We must lunch together,

I absolutely insist on
making lunch for you two.

Well, I can catch
up on old times,

and you. (Laughing)
(Beth laughing)

Well?

Ah, that would be lovely.

Oh, great.

Michael.

Shall we, ah, get this
out of the way first?

Oh yes, very well.

Gosh, I mean, let's
not stand on ceremony.

Not that our ceremony
was much, was it darling?

I mean, Michael. (Laughing)

Registry office amidst
a whirlwind of passion,

that is until someone d*ed
and Michael was whisked off

to work for two weeks
on a double homicide.

Still, eyes wide
open, eh? (Laughing)

Ah, right, I'll
just go find a pen.

Oh, I have one.

Oh, Michael, well, I can't
use that, it's plastic.

I don't use plastic.

I mean, look around, do
you see anything plastic?

- No.
- Hm.

Gosh, how do you do that?

Oh, commitment, but I'm
sure I've got a wooden pen

around here somewhere,
just let me see.

Oh, look, we're in luck,
here we are, wooden pen.

Okay, right, let's
do this, shall we?

Oh, "I, Tabatha
Shepherd," that's me,

"And Michael
Shepherd," that's you.

Yes, yes, yes, yes.

Ah, maybe if you just, um-

No need to rush.

Just, just here.

Ah.

Well, pretty simple in
the end really, isn't it?

(soft guitar music)

Would you believe it?

Oh, I'm so sorry,

oh, apologies.

But not to worry though,

Owen at the local
store will have one.

You want me to drive
back to the store?

Oh, would you?

'Cause I realized we
need saffron as well,

it's one of the few things
I can't grow around here.

(soft guitar music)

The windows were all locked.

The offender had to come
and go via the front door.

Did the victim bring
this or was it delivered?

Um,

delivered, this made
delivery : p.m.

A pizza delivery
person could come and go

without creating suspicion.

Hm, you're thinking there
was a tussle over the pizza?

Pizza guy pulls a g*n, pops him?

Yeah, but given the
entry point of the b*llet,

he'd have to have asked
him to lie down first.

Unless, and don't
say no straightaway,

unless the victim
tries to fend him off

with a Taekwondo kick.

The offender sh**t
him in there.

No.

Okay, just working the angles.

Yeah and splitting your
pants if you're not careful.

Okay, well, the sh*t may
or may not have left residue,

but it would've left an echo.

A g*nsh*t must have
reverberated around this place.

Not if they used a sil*ncer.

I will need their
contact details.

Just thinking back to when
you discovered Mr. Jacks,

did you notice anything
unusual in the room.

Other than him, no, I
thought he was just another

lazy guest not
observing the rules.

Checkout's clearly
stated as a.m.

Mr. Jacks, we need to
turn this room around!

to you and your loved
one, Erecto Magic,

So the TV was on?

- Yes.
- And you turned it off.

Well, I'd just
found a guest dead,

I didn't want to hear an
infomercial for male stamina pills,

hardly seemed appropriate.

Did you touch anything
else in the room?

No.

And the door was
definitely locked?

Of course.

And when someone
walks out the door,

it will always
self-lock behind them?

Yes.

(door clicking)

We will need to pull
your CCTV footage.

Oh, whatever gets you guys
out of here soon works for me.

(soft guitar music)

- The Brokenwood Motel?
- That would've been Dustin.

We had a few deliveries
there last night.

Busy night, was it?

Roaring trade,
it's the new menu,

doubling down on the
whole avian theme.

Dustin should be
back any minute.

Great worker, really embraces
the Porky Pigeon ethos,

real stickability, why?

Sometime after Dustin
delivered the pizza,

the recipient d*ed.

Whoa!

Steady on, are you
suggesting it was the pizza?

No.

Because I've got a triple
C plus food safety rating

and that took a
lot of work to get.

I'd like to talk to Dustin,

see if he saw
anything suspicious.

So it wasn't the pizza then?

No, Ray, it wasn't.

Well, that's a relief.

(delivery van rumbling)

But I tell you, Dustin's
not the sort of kid

to get himself into trouble.
(car door thudding)

Dustin, D.C. Chalmers

What?

I said D.C. Chalmers

(soft guitar music)

[Daniel] Do you remember

Yes.

And did you go inside the room?

No.

Did Mr. Jacks
seem at all anxious?

No.

Did you notice anybody
else inside the room?

None that I saw.

And you made other deliveries

to the Brokenwood
Motel last night?

Did you see any person or
persons perhaps lurking around?

What?

I said did you see
any person or persons

perhaps lurking around
outside in the motel grounds?

Oh, no.

Two Bat Bird Supremes
and one Iron Duck Man.

I've got go.

[Ray] Tully Moore Ave.

- Thanks, Ray.
- All right.

The whole, is it a bird, is
it a plane? That was my idea.

Simple business psychology
equating any superhero

with a pizza and
what have you got?

Aspirational pizza.

Does Dustin have a
hearing impairment?

Well, he came in
complaining of earache,

but he's just young.

Young people, they don't
know how to listen.

Hey, ah, that bloke room ,

how'd he die?

Thanks, Ray.

What if she does?

What's she done?

Nothing, as far as I know.

She's out there

Thanks, you're always
so helpful, Trudy.

- (mop swooshing)
- Floor's wet.

Fennella, remember me,

Oh, yeah.

Can we have a word?

What about?

Well, if we talk,
you'll find out.

(door thudding)

Relax, it's just a

(mellow melodic music)

Bit of a creep, I reckon.

Still, congratulations.

Were you aware of someone
next door in room ?

Yeah, they were playing
the TV quite loud,

kept changing the channel.

And did you two
stay in all night?

Mm-hm.

Did you hear any other
loud sounds at any point?

Like what?

Bangs, a scream perhaps?

From next door?

Yeah.

No. Why?

We're investigating
the suspicious death

of a gentleman who was
staying in the room

next to yours last night,

we're trying to piece
together what happened.

Wow.

That's sad.

How did he die?

g*nsh*t wound.

You mean a su1c1de?

We're still working
through the possibilities.

Can you tell me where
I can find Curtis?

Why?

He might have heard something?

I don't think he did.

Well, still, if he
did, it could be helpful.

I don't know where he is today.

Okay, can you give
me his phone number?

Mm-hm.

Ah, my phone is with my
stuff in the staff room.

Can I just text it to you?

Sure.

Here's my card, as soon
as you can would be great.

Oh, um, could you just
give me his address?

I might try there on my
way back to the station.

It's, um, Waterford Lane.

Okay, thanks.

(mellow melodic music)

Curtis, the cops are
coming, get out of the house.

Just get out of the
house and let me think.

(soft guitar music)

Gosh, what amazing
soil you have.

Mm-hm, "All the better to
eat you with." (laughing)

What?

Well, look at you
in your red jacket,

I was thinking you look
like Little Red Riding Hood.

"All the better
to eat you with."

(laughing) I get it.

It's funny.

(birds chirping)

Ah, no doubt Michael has
painted me as the Big Bad Wolf?

Oh, no, not at all.

Hm.

Has he pulled one
of his stunts yet?

Stunts as in?

Oh, surely you know what I mean?

One of his obsessive
close out reality

and everyone around him stunts.

Mike works hard and he's
very good at what he does.

Oh, yes, don't we know?

No, in our brief
tenure together,

one day, Mike suddenly wanted
to take a holiday by a river

and I thought, "God, a
getaway, that'd be lovely."

Turns out there'd
been a homicide

involving an angler,
a trout fisherman.

So less than an hour
after we arrived

at our picturesque hideaway
next to the Tongarira River,

Mike disappeared, I found
him downstream in waders

trying to master the
art of fly fishing

in the belief it might help him

get inside the mind
of the offender.

And did it?

No, after watching
him stand in the river

for all eight hours of
both days of our break,

I couldn't care less.

It's important work.

Yes, but is it more
important than you?

(soft guitar music)

Oh, gosh, this one's a big one.

(gasps) Oh, my God!

What?

Multiple crowns, it's a sign.

Sign of what?

Oh, nothing, nothing, no.

Sign of what?

Ah, so tell me, how
did you and Michael meet?

(soft guitar music)

Okay, so this angle
covers the walkway

and doorways for , ,
through to reception.

Darren Jacks arrives
at : p.m.,

he's shown in by the manager
and then minutes later,

he leaves and comes back at :

with what looks like the
six pack we saw in his room

and as he enters his room,
he crosses with Fennella

and who I'm guessing is her
boyfriend, Curtis Cooper,

there's some brief
acknowledgement

and then they head off toward
their room, then nothing.

He gets his pizza delivered.

Then nothing until,

the manager and the cleaner

open it at :
the following day.

So that door remains
shut the whole time,

except for the pizza delivery.

(phone ringing)

Sims.

Really, nothing at all?

Okay, thanks.

(receiver clattering)

Forensics found zero trace
of gunpowder residue.

(soft tense music)

That's one very tidy sh**t.

One who has the
ability to evade CCTV.

- Oh, he's back.
- (car door thudding)

Apologies, that took
longer than I thought.

Oh, time's nothing
but a modern construct.

Sun rises and sun
sets. (Laughing)

Ah,

saffron.

Fabulous, however, I'm
sorry to say, my darling,

that we now find ourselves
short of a pumpkin,

but a farmer friend two
miles back from the motel

always has them.

You're kidding me?

Well, it's the hero
item of the dish.

Possums got to my last one.

Tabatha.

I am not serving you two love
birds anything but the best

is sitting in the sky,

we shall declare that

so there's no rush.

Fancy a ride?

Oh, don't be silly, no,
we've got too much to do.

Beth's keen to learn
how to mill the wheat

to make the pastry, aren't you?

went from his room,

gunpowder residue.

What are you doing?

[Fennella] Giving
her your number.

- Why?
- Because if I don't,

then it'd make me look
like I'm hiding something.

What am I gonna say?

Nothing, you don't just say
anything, tell them nothing.

They don't know
about me, do they?

No, Lila, you've
not been mentioned.

Thank God.

(Fennella sighing)

Okay, I think...

[Fennella] What?

We left the cartridge there.

What?

When we got up and left, I
was so worried about the g*n,

I didn't see it, but
it must be there.

Oh, my God!

- You idiot!
- Me?

This was your idea.

This is a disaster.

Lila, shut up, I need to think.

I mean, the cleaners
would've picked it up, right,

chucked it in the bin?

If they did, then they
would've told the cops

and if the cops knew,

then they would've
already asked us about it.

So it's still there?

(soft tense music)

Are you sure they
don't know about me?

No, they don't, which is why-

Okay, look, here's the thing,

you see that public
picnic table over there?

You can sit there not drinking
coffee and talk all day long

about feeling overlooked,
but this table here,

I provided in exchange for the
courtesy of people like you

buying coffee off me
and drinking it here,

it's like buy a coffee,
get the table for free,

it's kind of a long
standing understanding.

Okay, we get it.

Curtis, buy us coffees.

(birds chirping)

This could be the beginning
of a beautiful friendship.

You are going back there tonight

and you are going to find
that cartridge shell.

But the cleaners
must have really liked-

The cleaners never clean
where they don't have to,

I know that for a fact,
check under the beds.

But why me?

(laughing) Because they
don't know about you,

because Curtis or I
would look suspicious

and because if it
wasn't for you,

it wouldn't be there, would it?

(mellow melodic music)

Can we try another one?

Yes.

Oh, the Death card, interesting.

Death?

Oh, relax, when upright,
Death signals new beginnings,

metamorphosis, change.

Oh, okay, no, I can see that.

Although it is reversed,
which suggests stagnation

and decay, a sense
of holding on.

Let's try another.

Hm, the Five of Wands,

that suggests
rivalry, competition.

Okay, but it's reversed.

Yes, which means, oh,
(laughing) nevermind.

Ah, no, no, no, no, no, no,

we've had the potato
and all these cards,

I really wanna know.
(soft guitar music)

Well, it suggest
you're avoiding conflict.

But look, honestly,

look, these, these are
just a snapshot in time.

Tomorrow, it could
all be wine and roses.

I've never dabbled
in these before,

I'm not sure how I feel.

Honestly, take it or leave it.

Although, I must admit, when I
saw that multi-headed potato,

I did sense that the Earth

was sending up a
message of caution

and it would've
been remiss of me

not to at least try
for some clarity.

Clarity on?

Well, it reminded me
of when my mother d*ed.

The potato?

Hm, it was a dark day.

Of course, because your
mother d*ed and I'm so sorry.

Oh no, not the death,
that was expected.

No, the funeral, Michael
promised not to be late

for the service, but of course
he was, missed it completely.

He got waylaid by some precious
detail on an investigation

and I thought, "Really, Michael?

Just this once, couldn't we-"

Oh, my God, that's so terrible.

I mean, I'm a reasonable person,

but your mother only dies once
and he wasn't there for me.

I'm sure he would've
been there if he could.

And I'm sure there were
equally capable police persons

able to step in.

Anyway, I didn't speak
to him for a week.

He put it down to grief,

but I admit it was the
beginning of the end.

(soft guitar music)

So that potato,
for a moment there,

I thought it was my mother
rising up as a reminder,

my mother reaching out
to you to just say,

"Good luck, my dear."

Oh, what's keeping him so long?

Yes, well, I was beginning
to wonder that myself.

Old Jim Pringle no doubt
will be chewing his ear off.

No, seriously, I'm worried.

Well, don't be,
you know Michael.

You do know Michael, don't you?

(soft guitar music)

Yes.

- Hidden cloud sometimes.
- Hm.

Even so, I'm-

Well, that thing's no good
to you here, I'm afraid,

we're in a dead spot I
believe they call it.

But look, if you're
really worried,

my neighbor can give you
a lift back to the motel,

you can make a call from there.

Find Michael and that pumpkin

before the clock strikes
midnight. (Laughing)

I thought you didn't
believe in time.

I don't,

but you do.

(soft guitar music)

Curtis, thanks for coming in.

No worries.

You stayed at Brokenwood
Motel last night, room ?

Yeah.

With Fennella Richards?

Ah, yeah, yeah, I did.

It's your anniversary, I hear?

Yeah, yeah, two-year
anniversary, pretty stoked, so.

Two years, I believe
Fennella told my colleague

it was one year?

Oh, yeah, one year
of actual going out,

but we've known each
other for two years, so.

Right, so you stayed
in all night, did you?

Yeah, man, yeah, ah, watched
a movie and just, you know.

Cool, although I
probably don't wanna know.

What?

The details.

(laughing) Oh,
yeah, yeah, nice one.

Or,

maybe I do?

What?

Wanna know the details.

- Oh.
- (soft guitar music)

[Daniel] What was the movie?

Um, oh, what?

What was the movie as
a matter of interest?

Yeah, ah,

I can't remember,
I fell asleep, so.

You fell asleep on your
big one-year anniversary

after two years, how'd your
girlfriend feel about that?

Oh yeah, she was, you know,
we'd had a few drinks and so.

Yeah, the cleaners mentioned,

that you left the
place in quite a state.

Cleaners?

[Daniel] The motel cleaners.

- Oh.
- (soft tense music)

Did they say anything else?

About?

Oh, nothing.

Right.

Anyway, as you no
doubt already know,

an event occurred last night,

which resulted in the death
of a gentleman in room .

What kind of event?

Fennella didn't
mention anything to you?

No, no, but I didn't
hear anything, so.

Hear anything of what?

Hear anything of the, the event?

Well, you probably wouldn't hear

a heart att*ck, would you?

A heart att*ck, I
thought it was a g*n?

(soft tense music)

What makes you
think it was a g*n?

Well, you-you hear
things and you know.

I thought you just said
you didn't hear anything?

I didn't, I didn't.

Seriously, I don't know
anything about g*ns

or anything about
anything, anything about...

(soft tense music)

(car rumbling quietly)

Here you go.

All right, really appreciate it.

(car door thudding)
Thanks, mate.

- (car rumbling quietly)
- Hm, evening.

Hi.

So do you and Mike
fancy an aperitif?

Ah, no, we're good, thanks.

- Right, right.
- (car rumbling)

- (door rumbling)
- Mike.

(melodic guitar music)
Mike?

Mike!

Oh, my God!

- Oh!
- Are you all right?

(laughing) I'm fine,
I'm, I'm fine, sorry.

[Beth] Did you faint?

[Mike] No.

Did you fall off the bed?

I was on the floor.

Why were you on the floor?

I was thinking.

Thinking,

while I was stranded
with your not so ex-wife

listening to her proclamations
and incantations?

Yeah, what's she been saying?

More than I care to know.

Meaning?

What were you
thinking about, Mike?

Us?

Her?

Not her.

Not me?

Work.

(gentle guitar music)

Maybe,

just this once,

you can focus on
the task at hand,

assuming that is still
important to you?

It is.

Then we've got a bloody
pumpkin to deliver.

(soft guitar music)

I went down to see my
guy just after midday

The lights were out
in the cold house

And her brown eyes looked gray

Somehow

Somehow

(soft melodic music)

(soft melodic music continues)

(soft melodic music continues)

(Gina knocking)

(door clicking)

(Gina speaking Russian)

It means what a lovely house.

I hope it never falls down
while you are sleeping

and I bring you borscht.

Oh!

Ah, I can stay as
long as you like.

(door thudding)

Oh, you like to take home
pictures of the victim too?

Too? Ah, no.

(soft tense music)
(laptop clicking)

This one just has me, you know,

working through the scenarios.

Hm, would you like
me to help you unpack?

I could go through your things.

Ah, no, well, to be
honest, I'm quite tired,

so I was just gonna
have an early night.

Of course, we must eat.

Ah, actually, I was
gonna save that for later.

And bring bad luck upon
the rest of your life?

No way, where I come from,

when someone give you
borscht to bless a new house,

you must share it with the giver

or unspeakable tragedy may
visit you every waking moment.

Of course, what was I thinking?

You were not to know,
I'll get the bowls.

Which box has the bowls?

(Kristin sighing)
(mellow melodic music)

What's taking her so long?

I don't know, maybe she's
fallen asleep on the floor.

Beth.

I just wanna get out of here.

Me too, maybe we
could make a run for it?

And leave without the
one thing we came to get?

No, thank you and
then Tabatha and I

actually threshed the
wheat to make the flour

to create the pastry
on the courgette pie.

Yes, she's a dab hand
in the kitchen. Michael,

you've done well
there. (Laughing)

- Shall we?
- Hm?

Do what we came here to do?

Oh, yeah, all right.

"I, Tabatha Shepherd."

It hasn't changed
from earlier today.

Oh, all right,
grumpy. (Laughing)

Right, oh.

Oh, what?

Oh, what, it's faulty.

You wouldn't read
about it, would you?

Oh, well, you're just gonna
have to take it back to Owen

and swap it out in the morning
for one that actually works.

It was his last one.

[Tabatha] Oh, dear.

But you'll be happy to know
he was putting an order in,

hopefully they'll
be in tomorrow.

Oh, that's a relief,

we'll just come back then
and we'll take care of it.

Or you could use this one.

- Oh!
- Just this once.

Michael, it's plastic.

Come on, you know I have my-

Principles, yes.

- Hm.
- Hm.

Excuse me, I need
to use the bathroom.

He's clearly not used
to raw foods. (Laughing)

Oh, Beth, darling,
Michael understands,

he's a man of
principles himself.

I know.

You'll be in safe hands

on the rare occasion
they're around.

Would you like some more wine?

Yes, please.

- (wine pouring)
- Oh, there we go.

(door thudding)

(soft guitar music)

There's wine, there's
ice cream, there's jam.

My fourth husband.

(soft guitar music)

(paper rustling)

(Mike sighing)

(soft guitar music)

Drive safely, bye!

(sighing) The whole pen thing,

you know she's been
toying with us?

Well, two can play at that game.

No games, please.

My God, how did you two

even get together
in the first place?

You don't even seem
like you're on the same-

Wavelength?

Planet.

Hm.

(car engine starting)

(soft guitar music)

Mm, wow,

it's like a bowl of
lukewarm beetroot.

Very good for the liver
and the armpit secretions.

Oh, thank you so much.

You're welcome.

Oh, this is so nice, you and
me having dinner together

in your new house
with three bedrooms.

So you'll be looking
for a flatmate?

No, I mean, ah, I haven't
really thought about it.

Sharing cost is a huge help.

Hm, um, Gina, you mentioned
that the time of death

on the victim was between
: and : hours?

- Between p.m.
- and midnight, yes.

And would it have
been instantaneous?

No, but fairly quick,
maybe one minute, maybe two.

You sure about that?

Kristin, I'm always sure.

(wine pouring)
(soft guitar music)

I do like your house.

I left my western
shirt in San Francisco

And my favorite pair
of boots in Marseilles

And my cowboy hat's floating
out in the Tokyo Bay

These are just some of

Oh!

Apologies.

Too loud, was I?

I couldn't sleep anyway.

That song you were singing?

Oh, yeah, Sin City,
oh, they're a great band,

real sing along stuff,
playing tomorrow night

at Rudy's Saloon if you're
in need of a boogie.

Ah, actually tonight,
oh, gosh, is that the time?

Goodnight.

Sure and I'll
knock it on the head.

These motel walls are
paper thin, I know,

but just trying to keep your
head in the game. (Laughing)

(soft tense music)

(phone ringing)

- (objects clattering)
- Oh.

Mike.

He must have been sh*t from
next door, the next room.

[Kristin] What?

Check the walls,
somewhere, somewhere,

there must be a point of entry.

Motel walls are
notoriously thin.

Mike, who are you talking to?

Let me know what you find,
I've gotta go. (Clears throat)

(soft tense music)

(mellow melodic music)

(Daniel sighing)

At : in the morning,

I'm hoping this is going
to be incredibly revealing.

Yeah, me too

and if not, blame Mike.

(Kristin clearing throat)
(door clicking)

Thank you.

Thanks.

Lie on the bed like
you're watching the TV.

I could have done that at home.

(Daniel exhaling heavily)

Now cross your legs.

Okay.

More.

Safe to say, I'm feeling
very objectified here.

Oi, you, quiet
in the cheap seats

and just watch
the TV, all right?

(tense melodic music)

(tense melodic music continues)

Voila.

Get next door.

(door clicking)

(tense melodic music)

(tense melodic music continues)

And there it is.

Best guess?

Air product.

Did you test for g*n residue?

The place was cleaned.

You wanted to do the laser test?

Ah, yeah, just here, thank you.

Okay, they are good to go.

[Daniel] And you want me
to lie down on the bed again?

- Well, it won't hurt a bit.
- Thought you might say that,

that's why I invited
my mate, Waldo.

Well, who's Waldo?

(soft upbeat music)

Waldo,

loves this stuff, it's
what he was born to do.

(Waldo thudding)

He's been waiting patiently in
the back of the ESR guy's van

as he does day in and day out,

so if he missed this opportunity,
he might get depressed.

Do you want Waldo
to be depressed?

No, I certainly do not.

Hm, Waldo, don't worry
about the scary lady.

She may aim laser beams
into your private parts,

but don't take it personally.

(Kristin laughing)

Fire away!

Okay, light her up.

Bullseye.

See, didn't feel a
thing, did you, Waldo?

Unlike Darren Jacks.

(soft guitar music)

(phone alerting)

(soft guitar music)

(soft guitar music continues)

(soft guitar music continues)

(soft guitar music continues)

(coffee pouring)
(Daniel sighing)

Hey.

Look at this.

Dustin Ormsby delivers
a pizza to room

and doesn't leave
again for over an hour

and when he does.

(soft tense music)

He's half naked and running

like he's being
chased by the Devil.

What the hell's
going on in there?

Oh, good work, where was it?

Found it under the bed,

with her.

(tense melodic music)

Hello, Lila, I'm Detective Sims.

My colleague tells
me he found you

in quite an unusual place.

Hello.

Under the bed of
room at : a.m.

Why were you there?

I got lost, I was
disorientated. (Clears throat)

Had a few drinks,
must have blacked out.

Where were you drinking?

At Snake and Tiger.

- With?
- Friends.

And at the motel, I take it,

you were looking for something?

No.

Really?

You weren't looking for
something like this?

It's the cartridge that was
once attached to the b*llet,

nine millimeter, otherwise
known as a Parabellum.

- Mean anything to you?
- No.

You sure about that?

It's not, no, I-I mean, I
don't know anything about g*ns.

So you'd never been
to room before?

- No.
- You sure about that?

Yeah.

It's curious,

because I've been
watching a lot of CCTV

and most of it is
incredibly dull,

but occasionally,

it gets interesting.

(tense melodic music)

Looks a lot like you,
wouldn't you agree?

Let's stop b*ating around
the bush, shall we?

Fennella Richards,
how do you know her?

In passing.

In passing, and
Fennella was happy for you

to gatecrash their one-year
anniversary stay over

at the Brokenwood Motel?

I know Curtis better.

Dustin Ormsby, you know him?

He was my boyfriend.

Was?

We split up.

Was this before or after he
delivered pizza to room ?

Before.

And how did you feel
about him turning up?

Fine, no hard feelings.

Pizza was good.

Lila Hayes, you are under
arrest for being unlawfully

on the premises of
the Brokenwood Motel.

(soft tense music)

We will be holding
you overnight,

or what little remains of it.

- What?
- Up.

- Do you have a lawyer?
- No.

Well, you will be given
a list of duty solicitors.

To the left, this way.

Lila Hayes is entering a
period of quiet reflection,

while we wait for a
lawyer to be assigned.

Who is on duty today?

And don't tell me
it's Dennis Buchanan.

No, it's not, it's anyone
from Nathan and Associates.

And why are you
smiling at : a.m.?

Because Curtis Cooper's father

is a registered
antique g*n collector.

I reckon that's worth a visit.

(mellow melodic music)

Hm.

(mellow melodic music)

Big night?

What?

No.

Maybe.

Well, we really need to talk.

I'm late for work.

I'll write you a note.

Seriously, I can't be late.

And we seriously need to talk.

(tense melodic music)

Oh, what is that?

It's coffee or is your
hangover so bad, you can't tell?

No, that's not
coffee, that's a really-

Free, it's free coffee.

So you and Curtis celebrated
your one-year anniversary?

[Fennella] Yeah.

It's romantic, isn't it?

Go to a motel, have
some special time,

bottle of wine,
some candles maybe.

I am interested in
how are a firearm

fitted into your evening?

Was that part of the
romance package, was it?

I don't know what
you're talking about.

Where'd it come
from, was it yours?

- No.
- So there was a g*n,

a handgun, I presume?

What is this?

This is you being
straight with me, Fennella,

where did it come from?

(soft tense music)

Well, your mother used to
own the Brokenwood Museum,

did it come from there?

There are no
firearms in the museum.

Did Curtis bring it then?

Why are you so
fixated on some g*n?

Because a man is dead, Fennella

and the g*nsh*t that k*lled him

came from the room
that you were in.

Dustin Ormsby,

do you know him?

Yeah, we've met.

But you've more than just met,

he spent over an
hour in your room.

He popped in.

Hm, he popped in and then
he popped out half dressed,

running for his
life an hour later,

so what can you
tell me about that?

He delivered the pizza,
we said, "Come in."

He decided to hang out

and then we played Strip
Jack Naked and he lost.

Do you know what time it is?

It's super early.

It's just after eight
a.m., knock-knock time.

What?

- Knock-knock.
- (soft tense music)

Who's there?

No, Fennella, it's not a joke.

Knock-knock is the sound
my colleague is making

on the door of Curtis
Cooper's father's house

right about now.
(Daniel knocking)

(door clicking)

Curtis Cooper,
we'd like to come in

and check your father's g*n
collection, is that okay by you?

Um, why?

We're checking g*ns in the area

as part of our
current investigation

starting with your father's.

Oh, he's not here.

Oh, lucky for us, you are.

Can show us where he keeps them?

Yeah, I don't, I don't know.

We wanna eliminate any of
his g*ns from our inquiry.

I'll call him for you
if you'd like to check,

tell him there's been some
trouble with g*ns in the area.

I'm sure he'll understand.

Wait, so if you come
in, they'll be eliminated?

That's a definite possibility.

May we?

(soft tense music)

Wow, would you look at that?

I'm starting to think you've
been lying to me, Curtis.

No.

You said you didn't
know anything about g*ns.

I don't, they're my dad's,
old stuff, muskets and junk.

Was one of these g*ns
fired in room that night?

Doubt it.

I do doubt it,

it being a story that
you've been telling me.

They're like antiques, no
one's allowed to touch them.

Not even you?

No.

(soft tense music)

So you've never touched
any of these g*ns?

Probably good to
double check that, eh?

I don't know anything
about anything.

(birds chirping)
(soft guitar music)

(waves lapping)

(soft guitar music)

(soft guitar music continues)

Mike!

I was down at Owen's
when the courier came.

Ah.

Don't get a lot of couriers
around here, quite exciting.

Anyway, Owen thought
you might want this.

Oh, thanks, you've
saved me a trip.

You didn't see Beth
out walking, did you?

I did, I did, I offered to
give her a ride back here,

but she asked to be
dropped off at Tabatha's.

How do you know Tabatha?

I was married to her.

Wow!

Well, if you need a
beer later, I'll be, um-

Yeah, got it, Marcus, yeah.

(soft guitar music)

Curtis, just through here.

- (door clicking)
- Not so fast, Detective.

[Kristin] Dennis.

Have you spoken
to Mr. Cooper yet?

No, but we were just about to.

Oh, without me? How rude.

(soft guitar music)

So you have nothing to link
that cartridge to my client?

[Kristin] Not yet.

Do you have anything to link
that g*n to that cartridge?

We will conduct tests.

On what grounds?

On the grounds that this
cartridge was found in room

of the Brokenwood Motel after
your client had stayed there.

Where was it found?

It was found under the bed,

along with a friend of
Curtis' named Lila Hayes,

who had broken into the room,

while our team were
readying for a search.

(mellow melodic music)

Saved our team quite a
lot of time in the end.

[Dennis] Who's to say
she didn't plant it there?

- Oh, for God's sake, Dennis.
- Or given the declining

standard of
cleanness these days,

that cartridge could have
been there for some time,

could it not?

Any number of guests could
have dropped that cartridge,

but you come at my client
with a certain prejudice,

given his esteemed father,

the highly successful businessman,
Mr. Curtis Cooper Senior,

happens to be a collector
of classic firearms.

So tell me, are you
going to be testing

all nine millimeter
g*ns in the district?

As yet, we don't think
it'll be necessary.

On the contrary, I feel
it's imperative, is it not?

'Cause that cartridge
could've been expelled

from any firearm bearing a
nine millimeter amm*nit*on

and until that cartridge is
linked to my client's Luger,

which is a rare and precious
piece of m*llitary memorabilia,

then any further
conversation is moot.

Still, we would like to talk

about what happened
in that room, Curtis

and whether or not you're
responsible for f*ring this g*n.

Curtis, you're not
required to speak.

In fact, your father has
specifically asked me

to speak on your behalf, now
until you have probable cause,

then that g*n must legally
remain in the hands

of its lawful owner and as
the owner's representative,

I shall be returning it to
its safe and lawful abode.

(Daniel sighing)
(door thudding)

We have a fingerprint
match with the cartridge

and Curtis Cooper.

(soft tense music)

So Curtis,

how did your fingerprints
get on this cartridge?

Detectives, a
word with my client?

(tense melodic music)

(Kristin clearing throat)

(bag rustling)

We'll get those tests underway.

- (door thudding)
- You let them

- fingerprint you?
- I didn't know that-

Yeah, see, that's
your problem, Curtis.

Now, according to your father,
you spent the last years

determined and not
knowing too much.

- It was an accident.
- I don't need to know,

all right, don't tell me.

Let me give you a
little bit of advice

and try to let it stick into
that porous brain of yours.

Just because you did it

doesn't have to mean
that you are guilty.

Let's get out of here before
they pull up the drawbridge.

Dennis was getting antsy there.

Yeah, but he'll be back
to his usual smarmy self,

if forensics can't match the
Luger to that cartridge, right?

[Daniel] Hm.

So Fennella Richards
is playing dumb,

Lila Hayes won't say anything
without a lawyer present,

Dennis Buchanan's
unleashed Curtis Cooper

back out into the world,

but surely Dustin Ormsby saw
something, if not everything.

(mellow melodic music)

(store door bell dinging)

(door thudding)

[Daniel] Ray, is
Dustin Ormsby here?

Mate, I wish, he went home
sick minutes after arriving,

still complaining of
earache and running a fever.

Ray, I don't feel so good.

Mate, we're heading
into the lunch rush.

I'm sorry, it's my ear.

He was sweating b*ll*ts
and I can verify that,

because I'm now standing
in a very damp pigeon suit.

You're saying he went home?

Yes, young people,
no stickability.

Oh, if you're heading
in that direction,

any chance you
can take these to-

No chance, Ray.

Dustin delivered a pizza to
room on Saturday night,

just before p.m.?

Yeah, last order, so?

He didn't leave the
motel for another hour,

didn't that seem strange to you?

On the last order,
he's free to head home,

he doesn't have
to come back here.

Oh, I get it, so he was
partying with the client.

Earache, my arse.

I'm pretty sure
he has an earache.

(soft tense music)

(door clicking)
(store door bell dinging)

Dustin's mother said he
left for work an hour ago.

(car lock beeping)
(car door clicking)

So if he's not
at home or at work,

he's gone on the ground.

Hang on.

Dustin?

(melodic country music)

Oi!

If you wanna get closer,
get closer, come on

Hey!

Don't take forever,
that'll take too long

Watch out, Frodo!

Sorry, Frodo!

[Frodo] Come on, man!

If you wanna get closer,
get closer, come on

Whoo!

(melodic country music)

Don't come any closer

or I'll jump!

Go ahead, then when you've
taken off your wet shoes

and rinsed out your
socks, we'll chat.

Jump or not, we're gonna
talk, Dustin, up to you.

(tense melodic music)

I was gonna toast to drink

Today is going by

Leave your questions
hanging without reply

Things don't always
work out the way

They do in your mind

(car door clicking)

(car door thudding)

[Mike] Ah!

Wooden pens.

- Oh!
- Bamboo, to be precise,

of them.

Oh, let's hope
we have more luck.

Where's Beth?

Oh, I thought she was with you.

Marcus Donovan said
he dropped her here.

Yes, he did.

Well, we chatted for a bit
and then she headed off,

said she felt like a walk.

And ah, what did you talk about?

(birds chirping)

Well, we chatted
about this and that.

She wanted to know more
about permaculture,

thought it might come
in handy in Tiraha Bay.

Sounds lovely there, she
said she'd been offered a job

and that you and she were
both planning on moving there.

Yes.

Don't you wanna wait for her?

Ah, we need to hit the road.

Hm.

Well, it's been a long
time coming, hasn't it?

(birds chirping)

Are you sure this is
the right thing to do?

Whether you like Beth
or not is irrelevant.

Oh, but I do like her.

Really?

Yes.

The question is, do you?

Of course I do.

- Really?
- Yes.

You love her?

Yes.

And why are you marrying her?

(soft guitar music)

Oh, come on, Michael,
you and I both know,

that loving something
more than your job

has always been a
struggle for you.

Which is why I'm
thinking of retiring.

(laughing) You retire?

Pigs in hell might
freeze and fly.

Oh, be honest with
yourself, Mike,

if not for you, then for Beth,

she's a lovely soul,
she deserves better.

Are you gonna sign?

She wants something
you can't give her.

Well, that doesn't
come from a bad place,

just a place of experience,

of truth,

of love.

(soft guitar music)

Tabatha,

are you going to sign?

(door clicking)

Okay, Dustin.

I didn't see anything.

We haven't even asked
you a question yet.

(door thudding)

Even still, I
have nothing to say.

(Kristin clearing throat)

So why did you run?

Okay, what can you tell
us about the events

from Friday night at
the Brokenwood Motel?

We know you delivered
a pizza to room .

We know you entered at : p.m.

and didn't leave
for another hour.

Long time for the customer
to take to find their money.

What happened in there?

It's time to come clean, Dustin.

Let's look at this
another way, shall we?

We know what happened,

we know all four of
you were in the room,

Lila Hayes, Fennella
Richards, Curtis Cooper

and then you joined them, a
sh*t was fired and a man d*ed.

You were involved.

Were you involved, Dustin?

They're gonna k*ll me.

Who's gonna k*ll you, Dustin?

Curtis.

(soft tense music)

(Dustin thudding)
Uh!

The other night
never happened, got it?

- You're hurting me, man.
- I've got cops and lawyers

crawling up my arse
because of you.

- It's not me, man.
- If you say one word,

one word, it'll be
you next time, got it?

Yeah, I got it.

- Got it?
- I got it, I got it!

Uh!
(Dustin thudding to ground)

(soft tense music)

[Kristin] "It'll
be you next time."

What did you take that to mean?

That I'd be sh*t.

So Curtis had
already threatened you

with some kind of g*n before?

What type of g*n was it?

I couldn't see anything.

No, no, Dustin,

we're not buying the
whole see no evil line.

No, I mean it,

I-I couldn't see anything.

(Dustin knocking)
(tense melodic music)

Hello, Porky Pigeon!

[Curtis] Come in,
the door's open.

(door clicking)

Is it a bird, is it a plane?

No, it's Porky
Pigeon, what the hell?

It was an ambush.

So you didn't know
who ordered the pizza?

No and then the next thing
I know, I'm tied to a chair.

What's going on? Who's there?
Why are you doing this?

[Lila] You know why, Dusty.

Lila?

[Fennella] You are now
seated in the chair of truth.

Fennella? Oh, my God.

[Curtis] We want answers.

[Dustin] Is that Curtis?

[Fennella] Are you
cheating on Lila?

[Dustin] No.

[Lila] Is that why
you've dumped me?

No, I swear.

[Lila] Don't lie to us, Dustin.

I'm not, I'm not.

And they just kept going at me,

on and on, convinced that
I'd done the dirty on Lila.

- Had you?
- No.

So why do you think
they thought that?

I don't know.

Lila came into work one
time and accused me of it.

You're lying to me.

I'm not.

Look, it's just not
the right time, okay.

- Says who?
- Says me!

I've got studies
on, I need to focus.

It's really not
you, Lila, it's me.

God, you're such a loser.

She wouldn't listen to me.

So take us back to
the chair of truth.

It got out of hand.

Really out of hand.
(soft tense music)

You know what this is, Dustin?

It's a cold, hard steel.

[Dustin] Please don't do this.

Of the barrel of a Luger,
nine millimeter Parabellum.

Do you know what
Parabellum means, Dustin?

- No.
- It means prepare for w*r.

I don't want w*r.

Oh, but you started a w*r
when you cheated on Lila.

- I didn't.
- Who is she, what's her name?

- There's no one.
- What's her name, Dustin?

[Dustin] I swear.

Tell me.

I can't tell you something
I don't know. (Gasping)

(soft tense music)

Do you know what
this sound is, Dustin?

(g*n clicking)
(Dustin whimpering)

The sound that says
prepare to die.

And it just went on and
on, they wouldn't give it up.

I could hear they'd
been drinking

and the more they drank,
the more they taunted me.

[Curtis] This little
piggy went to market,

this little piggy went home.

[Lila] This little
piggy had roast beef

and this little piggy had none.

[Fennella] And this little
went wee, wee, wee all the way-

(g*n f*ring)

(Dustin thudding to floor)
(soft tense music)

Who pulled the trigger?

I don't know.

I couldn't see anything.

All I could hear
was the sound of it,

(g*n f*ring)
(Dustin gasping)

right next to my ear.

It was so loud,

it hurt.

And then what happened?

(sighing) And then when
they were freaking out,

I managed to get my hands free.

- Jesus Christ!
- (Dustin breathing heavily)

(soft tense music)

Just let him go.

Say one word about
this to anyone, anyone!

I won't, I won't, I won't.

(Dustin thudding)

(door thudding)

So Curtis pulled the trigger?

I don't know.

I wish I knew, I really
do, but I just don't know.

(car rumbling quietly)

(birds chirping)

(car door thudding)

That was a long walk.

Oh, away with my thoughts.

I thought I'd lost you.

You did.

Ah, Tabatha's signed.

Oh, I'm happy for you.

Hey, I've been thinking, um,

that offer back in Tiraha Bay

and the idea of us
both moving back there.

I've been thinking too.

You not working,

it's not gonna work.

- Seriously, I can-
- Come on, Mike.

It was a good idea
in theory, but...

(soft guitar music)

Is this what I think it is?

I'm heading back to Tiraha Bay.

(soft guitar music)

If Tabatha-

If Tabatha taught me anything,

it was to listen to my heart,
dig deep and really listen.

Oh, Michael will
always fight the bad guys

and we love him
for that, don't we?

Oh, of course.

It's his true calling.

Yeah.

But we all have our calling.

Just try to remember his
calling and your calling

may not mean that
you're called together,

when it really matters.

As with your mother's funeral?

It's not his fault.

It's who he is.

She told you about
her mother's funeral?

In passing.

Did she also tell you that
I was caught in a standoff

with a man I'd been
tracking for three months,

a man who had k*lled
a nine-year-old boy

and a -year-old girl?

No.

Hm, it was only him and
me as I wait for backup.

If I walked away at that point,

he would've been free to
do more unspeakable things.

She didn't mention any
of that part, did she?

No.

But she knew it.

And that is so admirable, Mike.

(Mike exhaling heavily)
That is so brave

and there is so much
passion in what you do,

real passion there

and you'll always do it.

I'm sure with time, I can-

I don't need to hear

what you think I want to hear.

(birds chirping)

Are you sure this
is what you want?

No,

but deep down, I know
it's what I need.

Come here.

(soft guitar music)

Well, this is a unique feeling,

I don't recall any yelling.

[Beth] It's better to quit
before the bad stuff starts.

(bus rumbling quietly)
(soft guitar music)

We should get on the road.

(bus door hissing)
(alarm beeping)

(soft guitar music)

Eight hours is
a really long time

to sit in awkward silence.

Go far away if you want to

Oh.

Gina should have this back.

I'm sure she-

Oh no, it's better
on her than me.

Bye, Mike.

Where you'll always
know where you stand

Goodbye, Beth.

(bus door hissing)

Come back to me

When you want, come on home

(bus rumbling)

Come back to me

Come home

Come back to me

When you want, come on home

So we know all three were
in the room with the w*apon

and that it was fired.

But we still don't know
who pulled the trigger.

(tense melodic music)

(door thudding)

This is a picture
of your father's Luger

and this is a picture of the
cartridge found in room ,

which as we have established,

is covered in your fingerprints.

And we have a witness
who places you in the room

with the Luger.

And the lab has
verified that the b*llet

was fired by this g*n,

so can you please explain to
us what happened that night?

On reflection, my client's
got nothing further to add.

Your client was seen
in the room, Dennis.

A witness told us that your
client was using this g*n

to taunt said witness.

Did this witness actually
see my client holding the g*n,

when it was allegedly fired?

No,

the witness didn't see him.

But the witness heard
him cocking the g*n,

saying, "Prepare to die."

All right, I brought the g*n.

- Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- No, it's, it's okay.

I've, I've, I've got this.

Yes, I brought the g*n,
yes, I had it in the room,

yeah, it was loaded
and it went off.

But just because I'm guilty
doesn't mean I did it.

Tell them, Dennis.

(soft melodic music)

(sighing) Another word
with my client, please?

By all means.

[Dennis] The legal definition
of what you just did,

(door thudding)
is moronic.

But you said-

I said to let me do the talking.

Now, I want you to think
very, very hard, Curtis,

is it possible that
you pulled the trigger?

No.

There, it wasn't
difficult, was it?

But maybe, it was pretty
crazy when it went down.

No, wrong answer.

If in doubt, the right answer
is always, "I don't recall."

You got it?

(soft melodic music)

Do you think he did it?

He said as much, didn't he?

If he didn't do it, you'd
think he'd want us to know that.

Well, hopefully
one of the others

is willing to offer clarity.

(door clicking)

Okay, let's find somewhere
to chat, shall we?

Oh, sorry, Curtis.

(soft tense music)
Just try somewhere else.

(door thudding)

Gosh, it's quite hard to get a
room in here today, isn't it?

Try room three.

(tense melodic music)

(door clicking)

Ah, here we go, take a seat.

(door thudding)

So that was quite some
party that went on

in room the other night.

We had a few drinks.

Yeah, but that's not all though.

I don't know anything
about anything.

Hm, it's the party line, is it?

"I don't know anything
about anything."

I don't.

The party line
that got discussed

at the Snake and
Tiger last night?

Who says I was there?

You were there loading
Lila with drinks,

so that she could
work up the courage

to break back into the motel
unit and find the cartridge.

(glasses clinking)

Okay, you can do this.

I can't.

You can.

You have to, you're the
one with the most to lose.

[Curtis] Totally.

Don't.

(soft tense music)

And that's the real
clincher, isn't it,

that you and Curtis
aren't even an item?

But he would do absolutely
anything for you,

go along with your
outrageous plan,

bring his daddy's g*n, play
boyfriend and girlfriend,

so that you could act out

this power play
over Dustin Ormsby.

I don't know anything
about anything.

But you do though
and so does Lila.

How else did I know about
the Snake and Tiger?

Actually, she's been
very forthcoming.

This plan to torment Dustin
Ormsby, was that your idea?

(tense melodic music)
Curtis Cooper?

Was it Fennella's then?

We need you to say it, Lila.

Yes, (clears throat) yes,
it was Fennella's idea.

There's no way he would
dump you for any other reason.

There has to be
some other woman.

You think?

I know.

What exactly do you know?

I know a way to
get him to admit it.

Hey!

I don't pay you to stand around

and gossip all day,
Richards, come on.

sl*ve driver.

Leave it with me.

And the g*n, was that
Fennella's idea too?

She said it would ensure
Dustin would tell the truth,

but we didn't know
it was loaded.

But it was.

It was never meant to be.

Curtis is just so in
love with Fennella,

he'd do anything to impress her.

You're saying he loaded the g*n?

Well, it wasn't me.

Uh! (Laughing)
(background melodic music)

This little piggy
went to market.

This little piggy went home.

This little piggy had roast beef

and this little piggy had none.

And this little piggy went
wee, wee, wee all the way-

(g*n f*ring)

- (Dustin thudding to floor)
- Uh!

[Fennella] Oh, my
God, Jesus Christ!

(soft tense music)

(g*n clattering)

(shell casing clinking)

Just let him go.
(soft tense music)

(door clicking)
(Dustin breathing heavily)

[Curtis] You say one word
about this to anyone, anyone!

[Dustin] I won't,
I won't, I won't.

(door clicking)

- (door thudding)
- What are we gonna do now?

(soft tense music)
My dad's gonna k*ll me.

[Lila] You didn't
tell me it was loaded.

- I didn't know!
- Ssh!

(TV broadcasting quietly)
(Curtis exhaling heavily)

He's still watching TV,
he didn't hear anything.

We're gonna get done.

For what?

No one got hurt, but
Dustin got the message,

don't mess with a
like you, eh?

Yeah.

(soft tense music)

Find something to fill that.

Tomorrow we check out and no
one will ever know anything.

I didn't know it was loaded.

If I didn't know it was loaded,
it wasn't my fault, right?

Well, you may not have
known it was loaded,

but you still fired it.

She so did it,

she said so.

Lila might have
pulled the trigger,

but you told Curtis
to bring the g*n.

I didn't know it was loaded.

Hm.

That's strange 'cause
neither did Curtis.

Did you load the g*n, Curtis?

I don't recall.

You either did or you didn't.

(soft tense music)

Yeah, but what
if I don't recall?

There's a lot at
stake here, Curtis.

If you didn't load the g*n,

it would be in your very
best interest to say so.

In that respect, she's right.

So did you load the g*n?

Then who did?

So when did you load it?

(soft tense music)

At Curtis' place.

[Curtis] He keeps them in here.

[Fennella] Oh!

Pick any one you
like, he'll never know.

This one.

Nice choice, the Luger.

Nine millimeter Parabellum.

Is it already loaded?

Oh, we're not having
it loaded, no way.

We can't do that.

I'll find a bag, so it's not
obvious when we check in.

[Fennella] Hm.

(soft tense music)

(b*ll*ts clattering)

What were you thinking?

How could you have possibly
thought that would end well?

I was thinking,

that an empty g*n was
like an empty promise

and Dustin was full
of empty promises.

And when did he let you down?

(soft guitar music)

I got your Valentine's card.

It was nothing.

No, it was,

but I have to be honest,

I have feelings for Lila, so,

but we can still
be friends, right?

I just have to be honest,

me and Lila, I think
there's a real connection.

(tense melodic music)

That's totally cool.

So you repaid his honesty

by pointing a loaded
g*n at his head?

(Kristin clearing throat)

Our forensic team

found this remainder of a b*llet

in the wall embedded
around a nail,

might have ended there had
it not been for the fragment,

that sheered off and
carried on its way.

I didn't know she
was going to fire it.

But what you did
know, all of you

was that there was
someone next door

behind the wall the
b*llet went through

and you failed to check
to see if he was okay

and he wasn't okay.

(TV broadcasting quietly)

(g*n f*ring)
(Darren grunting)

(tense melodic music)

(chair clattering)

(Darren breathing heavily)

(TV broadcasting quietly)
(tense melodic music)

Maybe, just maybe if he'd
received medical assistance,

the outcome could
have been different.

As with the others,
you will be charged

with conspiracy to kidnap,
reckless use of a firearm

leading to involuntary
manslaughter

and failing to
provide assistance.

But that's not fair,
that is so not fair.

Hm, well, try telling
that to his widow.

(soft guitar music)

(phone ringing)

Kristin.

Oh, hello there,
I'm just reporting in,

that you missed out on a Luger,
a Parabellum in the perineum

and a mild
hostage-taking situation,

but don't worry,
it's all in hand.

I thought you were
supposed to be moving house.

Yeah, well, I can multitask.

(birds chirping)

Sounds like you had an
eventful weekend then?

[Kristin] Hm and you, no doubt?

Yes.

Wait, you two aren't
driving back now, are you?

No, no, we're not.
