(john-boy) when
you're part of a family

where people
live under one roof,

you're not likely to spend much
time thinking about loneliness.

you're more likely
to be looking for ways

to have even a few
minutes by yourself.

but I remember a visitor

who showed us all
the face of loneliness,

not only her own, but
that of a man close to us.

a man we had until
then taken for granted,

but had never really known.

(Jason) hey, you're late.

Were you kept after school?

More likely had
car trouble, huh?

I was collecting some money.

Can I have a loan? You
can have a piece of candy.

Here, have a peppermint.

Now, take it easy.
Don't rip the bag.

Thank you. What are
you all waitin' for?

Give me another one. I'm not
gonna give you another one.

Stop it, ben.

Will you give me one when
I'm finished with this one?

[All laughing]

(Jim-bob) I'm finished
with this one already.

Hey, everybody. John-boy.

John-boy. (Olivia) stand still.

Oh, it's no use, mom. It's
just gonna look made over.

Here, have a peppermint.

Thanks.

(John-boy) sweeten
your disposition.

Oh, erin, I forgot to
offer you some candy.

I'm surprised you
even noticed I was here.

What's the matter with her?

She's feeling sorry for herself.

Why?

She's erin. That's
reason enough.

[All laughing]

[Knocking on door]

(John-boy) hey, daddy,
somebody at the door.

Hello? Oh, ike. It's ike godsey.

(Ike) hi, john-boy.
Hey, ike. How are you?

Hi, everybody. Hey, ike.

This... This lady
came by the store

And she asked for you folks

And, uh, I thought I
just had to bring her by.

Ah! I guess I should
have written,

But, uh, I wanted
to surprise you all.

Doesn't anybody know me?

John?

Zeb?

Well... Uh, is it
really you, corey?

It's me all right.

Corabeth.

Corabeth walton.

[Laughing] hello.
Good to see you.

I hope I haven't walked
in on you at a bad time.

No, not at all.

The waltons are
always welcome here.

Come on and meet the family.

Hello, corey. How are you?

Nice to see you.

It's been a lot of
years, corabeth.

The years have been kind to you.

Corabeth, meet the
rest of the family.

Our children. This is
our youngest, elizabeth,

And this is mary ellen.

This is your cousin, corabeth.

And there's jason and jim-bob.

Glad to meet you. Ben.

Don't forget erin over here.

Oh, erin, this is... Meet
your cousin corabeth.

Hi.

Uh, john-boy, I guess
you don't remember me.

I remember I used
to go by your house.

When your daddy was sick, he used
to keep a sack of candies by the bed.

I remember that. You
were just a little boy then.

And the rest of you hadn't
even been thought of.

Well, corey, you must be
wore out from travelin'.

Oh, here, sit down,
corey. Thank you.

I'll go outside and...
And get your things.

I'll help you. Come on, jason.

Corabeth, what brings you
over to jefferson county?

Mama passed away last month.

I'm sorry to hear that.

Oh, she must've
been nigh on to .

.

.

I'm on my way to richmond
to look for a position

And I thought it only
my proper family duty

To stop in and see my kin.

Well, we're glad you did.

It's a pleasure to
see you, corabeth.

When are you
expected in richmond?

Expected?

Oh.

No, my time's my own now.

I'm in no hurry.

I don't intend to
move back to doe hill.

Everything I own is right here.

I'm much obliged to you,
mr. Godsey, for your kindness.

I was very happy to do it.

It's not everyone would extended
themselves for a stranger.

Well, if there's anything
else I can do for you

To make your visit
here more enjoyable

You just say the word.

Thank you so much.

I spotted you for a gentleman

The minute I walked in your
general mercantile store.

[Laughing]

[Clearing throat]
much obliged, ike.

Oh, john, it... It
was a pleasure.

Well, see you later. Bye, ike.

Thank you, ike. Thank you.

Well...

I hope my just walkin' in like
this isn't any inconvenience.

Oh, not at all, corabeth.

The last thing I want to
be is a burden to anyone.

But i...

Well, if it would fit
in with your plans i,

[Engine sputtering]

I certainly would
appreciate a chance to rest.

Well, you just stop
your frettin', corabeth.

Uh, john-boy,

Uh, why don't you take
corabeth's things up to your room?

Jason, give him a hand.

Sure.

Oh, dear, I'm dispossessing you.

Oh, no, it's really
just the guest room.

I only stay there when
we're not having visitors.

[Laughing]

Um, you wouldn't happen to have

A little leftover
tea in the pot?

Oh, of course,
I'll fix some fresh.

Children, come give me a hand.

That would be so nice.

And a piece of bread
and butter or jam.

Grandma, where's
cousin corabeth?

Upstairs.

Catching her breath from
doing absolutely nothing

All mornin'.

Oh.

I have to get a few things
from my room. But, uh...

Well, she'll be down directly.

For a snack

Do you think I can go
up and get them myself?

It'd only take me a minute.

Oh, it's your room. You've
got every right into it.

Ok, I'm gonna go on up there.

John-boy, from what
I know about corey,

We'd be wise to make our rights
known in no uncertain terms.

Well, she's only stayin' for
a couple of days. Isn't she?

Well, I hope so.

Well, go on, get your things.

Yes, ma'am.

Excuse me, could I get
a few things that I need?

Oh, yes, of course. Come in.

Thank you.

Oh, I hope you don't
mind me taking the liberty

But everybody needs a few
treasured things around them

To make a strange
place feel more like home.

Oh, dear. I seem to have
forgotten everything i, I need

And left everything
I don't need at home.

Oh, that's mama and papa.

God rest them.

Handsome, aren't they?

Quality.

They were truly
devoted to one another.

I guess you don't
remember them, john-boy.

You were too young.

But they really
loved each other.

Enduring well right up until
the day death separated them.

Uh, ex... Excuse me, i... I... Let me
just get a couple of books here

And then I'll leave
you to be by yourself.

Oh, and if it's not
too much trouble,

You might save
yourself some trips

By taking everything down now.

Everything?

Uh-huh. Everything.

Uh, um... [Stuttering]
of course, sure.

And would you mind taking
my bags down, too, please?

Get your things?

Not exactly.

What are you doin'
with her suitcases?

I'm gonna store them
in the barn. I knew it.

The only thing I recognize about that
room up there is my own face in the mirror.

I have a feelin' she's
planning to stay around here

For a little while.

Good lord!

♪♪[Playing piano]

That was lovely, corabeth.

Very nice.

Always been
partial to that tune.

You play really good.

Thank you.

Oh, I didn't realize how
much I'd missed the piano.

We had to sell ours.

That's very enjoyable,
corabeth, but we were plannin' to...

one of my favorites.

Oh, it's been so long.

I've kept you from

We can listen to the radio anytime.

Oh, no, no. I'm so sorry.

Please, please, turn it on.

I'm just so thankful
to be here sharing.

Please turn it on.

I'll just feel
terrible if you didn't.

I'll tell you what, corabeth,

the boxes right here.

Miss walton?

Oh, corabeth.

She seems to be
enjoyin' her stay.

Eats hearty, rests easy.

Her and me, we only talked
for a couple of minutes

to me sort of, uh...

How can I say it?

soft and gentle.

They don't even

Oh, sounds to me like you're
feelin' sorry for yourself.

I have a right to.

Well, of course, you do.
But do you have a reason?

No, I'm just tired of being me.

What?

Well, it's the truth.
What am i, anyway?

Mary ellen's the oldest girl.

And elizabeth's the baby.

Mary ellen's loud and funny.

She makes people mad and
she also makes them laugh.

And they always remember her.

Oh, that's for sure.

And elizabeth is cute.

People like to spoil

Where does that leave me?

Nobody ever even

I'm just "that

But I just wanna be

No one ever sees me.

I bet if you asked

Are you serious?

Do you know what you look like?

Blah.

Don't you realize?

[Laughing] erin.

Will you do me a favor?

Will you come with me into

Don't ask any questions.
Just nod your head, yes or no?

Great. Now you gotta get all

What for?

Don't ask me any questions.
Have we got a date?

I guess so.

Great.

You sure she's in her room?

Whose room?

She turned out her

Will someone please tell me

Why we're huddled together here

Whisperin' like a bunch

Yeah, well, zeb's right.

It's more honest to come right
on out and tell her how we feel.

You know, I've got a
good idea... Grandma.

Ma, calm down.

Look, john, it is time corey

I just sort of casually

She acted as though she'd

I know it is hard to have an

Corey's not the easiest but...

She acts as though we're

John, I think she's scared stiff

About movin' out of here

her the question.

I just had to take the
chance. And she said yes.

She's gonna marry me!

[Chuckles]

Ike, [clears throat]

You and me have been
friends a lot of years, right?

Right. And I want you to be my
best man. You will be, won't you?

Yes. Good. I've already talked
to the reverend fordwick.

And we're gonna
have a nice wedding.

Not a big wedding, but a
nice wedding, you know.

And I'm already thinking about

Making my living
quarters larger. You know,

Making them more comfortable...
Ike, slow down a little.

I don't know how to say this
without comin' right out with it.

Go ahead. Say anything you want.

Are you sure you're
not making a mistake?

[Laughing] john!

Now you've been a bachelor
for a lot of years, ike.

You know, you can go huntin'
every time the spirit moves you.

Yancey can come over
here and you can play cards

Till all hours of the
night. You know, you,

You can eat what you
want when you want.

You're used to
this kind of life, ike.

You can let your clothes lay
around in a mess if you want to.

John, what are you
tryin' to tell me?

You and corabeth, ike, you
hardly know each other.

I mean, don't you think you ought
to think this thing over a little?

She's plannin' to
move to richmond, ike.

You could go visit her...

Ike, she's not an easy woman.

[Sighing]

John, I want to
tell you something.

Now, there might be many
times that I might be sorry

That I popped the question.

And there might
be a lot of hurts

And troubles along
the way on both sides.

But, john, I'm tired

Of bein' able to do all those
things that you mentioned.

And I'm tired of bein' free

To do anything I
want anytime I want to.

And I'm tired of being lonely.

And no matter how it works out,

It's gonna be better than it is.

Because what I've
got now is nothin'.

Nobody.

Congratulations, ike.

Thank you, john.

Oh, I wish I didn't have
so many freckles.

I look like I have the measles.

Erin, you are a very, very pretty
girl. Everybody else thinks so

You ought to think so, too.

Thank you, john-boy.

Has rebecca cook
seen her pictures yet?

She hasn't come in yet.

Say, since you're so photogenic,

How about entering that contest?

"Jefferson county
sweetheart contest."

No. I don't think so.

How did her pictures turn out?

She was so worried.

I wish you'd
consider the contest.

There's no entry fee.

I'm really proud of my
work in your pictures.

No. I don't think so.

Hi! Rebecca!

I hoped you'd be
here. Mrs. Cook.

Nice to see you
again. Thank you.

Oh, mother! Look at erin's
pictures. They're beautiful.

Oh, they're very nice.

May I have rebecca's proofs?

I like your dress.

It's new. I'm wearin' my hair
the way you fixed it, too.

(Mrs. Cook) why,
these are quite good.

(Belden) rebecca registers
especially well on film.

Hmm. This is the girl who didn't
want her picture taken, eh?

Rebecca, I think you should be
the one to enter the contest.

(Belden) she certainly should.

Oh, no. I don't think
so. You should, erin.

I will if you do.

All right.

I suppose there's no harm in it.

I like this one the best of you.

And this is my favorite.

And, of course,
this is the kitchen.

If you've seen one
kitchen, you've seen 'em all.

Oh.

my mother and father.

And, uh, that's me
when I was a baby.

And, uh, well,

This is it. What
do you think of it?

Very cozy.

Then you think we can
fix it to your liking?

Yes. Yes, I do, ike.

I'll be glad to help you with
any sewin' you have to do.

It's small for people.

Yeah, but like you
said, it... It... It's cozy.

A-and it's comfortable.

Well, try this chair. Now that
chair, that's really comfortable.

And... And this bed. Oh!

Oh, you ought to
test this mattress.

[Mumbling]

I'm sure it's satisfactory.

You... You can be here alone
all day uh, while I'm in the store.

Yes, a person needs
to have some privacy.

Yeah. And... And if you
like the place to be bigger,

We can... We can add
a room or... Or even .

That's very
generous of you, ike.

This place has always been mine.

But now i, I want it to be ours.

Yes.

Yes, it will be.

Its, it's very pretty.

Very nice.

I can go into charlottesville,

And... And I can buy
corabeth a new easy chair,

Something that
she'll really like.

Maybe tomorrow.

Oh, there's no hurry.

Um,

Would you excuse me
for a moment, please?

Hey, and I'll buy
you a set of dishes.

A... A... A whole new set.

[Birds chirping]

(Grandma) corey, where're you
going with those suitcases?

I'm leaving. You're leaving?

But what about the wedding?

There isn't gonna
be any wedding.

Oh, now don't get
yourself all wrought up.

Everybody has second thoughts.

Oh, what does it
matter to any of you?

What do you care whether
I marry ike godsey or not?

All you care about is
getting me out of the house.

Well, don't worry. I'm leaving.

Corabeth?

Corabeth, please let me in.

I'm leaving.

would take my bags down.

Corabeth,

I think I understand

You're so sure of yourself.

You have the man of your choice.

Well, maybe I don't understand.

But I'm tryin'.

It doesn't matter.

Corabeth, you don't really
believe that we want you to marry ike

It's true. It's hard havin' an
extra person in this house.

But if this old house
was just a little bit bigger

And it didn't have quite so many
people in it, you know you could stay.

[Sobbing] oh, livie,

That I may never have that.

Corabeth,
