- I was having a bad dream. Don't make me!

It was about my mom, she was coming to get me.

- Isn't that what you want?

- DYLAN: I don't know. I kind of like being here.

- DARLENE: Dylan's mama called.

She said she was coming to get him.

I came right over to tell y'all.

- Mom? - Hi, baby.

I think it's time for Dylan to come home with me.

- He wants to stay here!

- You wanna come with me or do you wanna stay here?

- MYLES: You're part of our family now.

See you soon? - Mm-hmm.

- DARLENE: It's time to go.

- ♪

- So, come on, Dylan.

- Okay, Mama. Hold on.

- What's wrong?

- I don't have my stuff, and I wanna say

a proper goodbye to my peeps.

- Okay.

Okay, honey, say goodbye... again.

Myles, Yasmine, I know we haven't always been

on the same page...

- Same page?

We ain't even in the same book.

- Well I thank y'all for everything you've done

for my baby.

- Look, Darlene, please, we need to talk about this.

Okay, Dylan has come a long way since he's been with us.

- Yeah, he's doing better in school.

- He's making friends. - And he even likes sushi now.

- Dang, Mama Yas, now you got a brother

wanting to get his sashimi and ponzu on.

- Boy, did you just make those words up?

- Look, Yasmine and the kids are right.

Dylan just got settled. - And so he'll get unsettled.

- Darlene, this boy has been through so much.

- I know that, Mama.

We both been through a lot.

But me and Dylan, we got each other though.

Ain't that right, Dylan?

- I always got yo' back, Mama. We day ones.

- Mama, you know I was going through some stuff,

but I'm--I'm good now.

- Yeah. I'm really happy to hear that.

- Yeah, if I had a dollar

for every time I heard that-- to quote Dylan--

"I'd have dem Drake stacks."

- I see my hip hop tutoring is finally paying off.

- Kids, go upstairs while we talk to Darlene.

- Ugh. I don't have time for that.

No offense, Yasmine.

You've always been so sweet.

- Darlene, please, look, we need to talk about this.

Dylan hasn't even finished packing.

- Okay, Dylan, honey? - Yes, Mama?

- Go finish packing. Hurry up.

- Darlene, please let us talk just for a second.

Dylan is in the middle of his first term.

It's an amazing school.

- Yes, and we've paid a lot of money for his tuition.

- No one asked you to do that, Myles.

- Well you entrusted us with his care, okay?

And so we just wanted to make sure

he got the best schooling possible,

just like our children.

- Again, I said thank you. Okay?

Thank you. I got nothing else for you.

Now, Dylan, hurry up. We have a train to catch.

- A train? - A train, Mama?

- You know, choo-choo! All aboard!

[laughing] - Where we going, Mama?

- Well, I was going to surprise you,

but since you ask, we're going to Chicago!

- Chicago?

- We going back to Chi-Town?

- DARLENE: Ha-ha! Chicago, here we come!

All aboard! Hurry, go get packed! Hurry!

I have a new life there, Mama.

- [phone ringing]

- Hello. Hi, baby.

Yeah, I'm picking Dylan up.

I can't wait for you to meet him.

Huh?

Sure, I can make it.

Well, where are you?

Rodney, you so crazy.

Okay, okay, I'll see you in a minute.

- Rodney's back?

So your new life is actually your old life.

- Mama, please stop. Listen, I gotta make a run.

And I'll be back to pick Dylan up in a couple of hours.

- Darlene, look, we need to talk.

- Look, there's nothing to talk about, Myles.

I'll be back to pick up my son in a couple of hours.

Just make sure he's ready. Bye, y'all.

- ♪

- Dylan, you can't leave. - My mom needs me.

We look after each other, you know?

- But who's gonna look after me?

You know how Rebecca can be.

- Look, I'll only be a phone call away.

But just in case, I'd start locking the door

before I went to sleep if I were you.

- There she is. There's my favorite big sister.

What brings you by? - My ears were ringing.

- You need to get that checked out.

- They weren't ringing literally.

It just means that I could feel that some little shrimp

was in here talking about me.

- Chill, Becs.

The kid was just showing a brother love.

- Well, I just came to tell you that I don't want you to leave.

- That's what I told him!

- I mean even though you're pretty annoying.

You snore in your sleep,

hardly ever clean up after yourself,

always crush on my friends--

- If you're trying to get me to stay,

then you're doing a really bad job at it.

- But even with all of those things,

you're a valuable part of this family.

We need you.

- Wow, Becs.

That's the nicest thing you've said to me.

I mean other than that time you said

my head wasn't as big as you thought it was.

- And I meant that.

- Look, I'mma miss you guys but I have to go.

But don't worry, I'mma visit.

- You sure? - No cap, bro.

- And that means he's not kidding.

- Yeah, yeah, correct. - Hey, honey.

- So, how you--how you dealing with all this?

- It is what it is. But you know me.

I'm a soldier.

- Right, but you know soldiers have feelings, so--

- Hey, if you wanna stay here

and finish your school year, we can talk to your mom.

- Yeah. I mean, look, you've worked really hard

to build a life for yourself here in Atlanta

and with us.

- Yeah, and you said Chicago can be dangerous.

- Promise me you won't fall into Lake Michigan.

- Why would I fall in Lake-- - Promise me!

- Oh, yeah. Yeah, okay. I promise.

- Myles and I don't want to pressure you,

but we love you and you are more than welcome

to stay here as long as you want.

You got that, right? - Yeah, I know that, Auntie.

Thanks, but I gotta be there for my mom.

We hold it down for each other, you know?

- Well, we just want you to know

that we're here for you if you need.

- Thanks, fam. It's all love.

- What about your rap game?

- The scene's always been hot in Chi-Town.

- Really? - Yeah.

- If you excuse me everybody, I better get packed.

some time to himself.

- CHARLIE: Oh!

And stay away from Lake Potawatomi.

- What is with you and lakes?!

- Promise me!

- You're scaring me a little bit, man.

Okay.

- ♪

- This is stressing me out.

- [sighs] I know.

I have to admit, I'll miss him. - What's Chicago like?

- I heard it's really cold and it snows.

- He's gonna be cold.

He doesn't have a big coat.

He has Atlanta clothes, not Chicago clothes!

- Well, he's going to need some.

They don't call it the Windy City for nothing.

- What are we going to do? - What do you want us to do?

Dylan knows Chicago. It's where he's from.

- No. We need to do something for Dylan.

I've got an idea!

- Oh brother.

- That was a great idea. - Good job, Charlie.

- What's a great idea, fam? - Oh nothing.

Looks like you're all packed.

- Hey, you need any help?

- Nope, I got it, Unc.

- I got something for you.

Here. I want you to take this.

- But this is your favorite jacket.

It even has the official Super Heroes of The Universe

and a half-eaten fruit leather.

- The jacket's yours but the leather stays.

- That's sweet, Charlie. - Yeah.

Yeah, but why are you giving away your favorite jacket, son?

- Because it's cold in Chicago.

They don't call it the Windy City for nothing.

- He got that from me.

- Becs, come on.

Stop trying to take other people's ideas.

- What?! No, seriously I--

- Thanks, bro. Good looking out.

- Lunch is served. You hungry, baby?

- Nah, I'm not really hungry, Gram.

- Your Auntie didn't make it. I cooked.

- Oh, and suddenly I'm hungry.

- Don't worry, I'm not offended.

- Well, if you are, do something about it.

Just get the basics.

- I got it, Viola, thank you.

- I made all your favorites: dirty rice, mac-and-cheese,

string beans, and my fried chicken.

- I'm sure gonna miss your cooking, Grandma.

- I know, baby.

I'm about to get them biscuits you like out the oven.

- I don't have that much time, Grams,

my mom's gonna be here soon.

But if there's some homemade jam back there,

I'll take it to go.

- Myles, it's been hours. - Yeah, I know. [chuckles]

I bet she's not even coming.

- Darlene done probably ran off with Rodney or something.

- How could she get his hopes up like this?

- Go talk to him, Myles.

- Yeah, okay. [sighs]

Hey, Buddy, uh, what say we go put our pajamas on?

- I can't, Unc.

My mom's gonna be in a rush when she gets here.

We have to take the train to Chi-Town.

- Yeah, well maybe she got tied up, Dylan.

- Tied up with what?

- Who knows? I mean...

Look, let me talk to you for a second.

Look, Dylan, you know your auntie and I

want nothing more than to protect you

from all the hurtful things out there in the world.

- You can't protect me from everything, Unc.

- You know, you're right. [chuckles]

You always surprise me with how smart you are

and how--how mature you are.

- Yeah, I'm practically a man now.

And not to brag, but I saw a hair on my lip the other day.

Peep it.

- That's dirt, Dylan.

You not washing your face good at night?

Look, I know you've been through a lot, okay,

and, you know, I wish it wasn't like that

but that's just how life is sometimes.

- So what you getting at, Unc?

- As much as it pains me to say this,

I don't think your mom is coming.

- Don't say that.

She's probably just running late or something.

She's terrible with time.

Once she took me to the movies,

and by the time we sat down the credits were rolling.

- So what'd you do?

- We left and ended up eating our popcorn on the L train.

- Well, I'm just trying to prepare you

for the fact that your mom might not come back tonight.

- But she said we were going to Chicago.

- Okay, look, you remember when you, you know,

weren't feeling well a few weeks ago?

- Yeah, when Becca gave me her nasty cold.

I was so mad.

My rap voice sounded like a cartoon mouse.

- Yep. Never seen you sleep so much.

Well, just like people can get sick physically,

sometimes people don't feel well in other ways.

- Hold up, Unc.

You ain't trying to call my mother crazy.

- Absolutely not.

No, and I don't like that word so don't use it.

- Yes, sir.

- What I mean to say is, as people, sometimes

we don't feel well physically, spiritually, emotionally.

I mean, there's so many parts of us that we have to work on.

And as adults sometimes, you know,

there can be a lot of pressure, it gets to be too much.

- But you and auntie have pressures,

and I don't see you guys leaving Charlie or Rebecca.

- No, but that doesn't mean that one day

one of us won't make a mistake.

We're all human.

- She's coming, Unc.

- ♪

- Dylan, come here, baby.

Come on, give Grandma a hug.

I got a surprise for you.

- I'm not really feeling much like

any more surprises, Grandma.

- Peach cobbler.

- Oh, see, you didn't let me finish.

I was gonna say any surprises that weren't peach cobbler.

- [laughing]

Come on then.

- I want a lot of crust. - I got you.

Grab that ice cream out the fridge for me.

- Your granddaddy used to say

my cobbler was food for a man's soul.

- What was Granddad like?

- Hmm, he was a lot like you.

Very independent, probably where you get it from.

- Mmm, Grandma this cobbler is so good.

- [chuckling] I'm glad you like it, baby.

I'm sorry your mother disappointed you.

- I don't think I love her anymore.

- Hey, hey, don't say that. - But it's true.

- Let me tell you something about love, baby.

When we love someone,

it can be hard when they disappoint us.

Then we get all mad because they hurt us.

- I'm tired of her just coming in and out of my life, Grandma.

- I know you are.

But she's trying to get her life together,

trying to get her mind right.

- But why did she have to come over here with all this?

I was just here minding my business,

growing a mustache. - [laughing] Child, please.

That is dirt on your lip, and we both know it.

Your mama just got too much going on.

But she loves you and she misses you so much.

- That ain't how you show nobody love.

- She's confused.

That's why she needs us to love her right now.

- I ain't really feeling her right now, Grandma.

- I know you're not. But remember this for me,

when someone we love makes us mad

or hurts us and we find it hard to love them,

that's when they need us to love them the most.

Okay, go on upstairs and put your pajamas on.

The rest of your family's got a surprise for you.

- A surprise that's better than your peach cobbler?

- Heck no.

Ain't too much better than my peach cobbler.

But it's still a pretty cool surprise though.

Go on now.

- Thank you, Grandma.

I love you.

- I love you too, baby. Go on now.

- ♪

- Okay, guys, come on, come on, we gotta get it together.

He'll be here in a second. You know you what you're doing?

Right? You know your part-- - Mom first, then me--

- Baby, what are you doing?! - I'm warming up.

- Oh, gosh. Okay, listen...

- Okay, fam, so what's the surprise?

- Well, it was Charlie's idea.

But the coat idea before was--

- Chuckles, let's see what you got.

- We wrote a rap when we thought

you were going to be leaving us.

- A rap? You, Charlie? - All of us.

- Oh no, you too, Grandma?

- What? You don't think I got rhymes?

- MYLES: [chuckles]

- Oh, can we have some of Grandma's peach cobbler?

- I'm sorry, say what?! Mama, you made cobbler?

- Yes, I did.

- Mm, well, cobbler beats out bedtime every time.

[chuckling] Let's go.

Mama, I got dibs on the corner piece!

- VIOLA: Unh-uh. - [stuttering]

No, no, no, no, baby, that's my momma's cobbler!

Come on! - I'll get the ice cream!

- [indistinct chatter]

Mmm, late-night dessert.
