[robotic voice]

♪ We can cross oceans
And the seas ♪

[propeller whirring]

Prepare yourselves, young StoryBots.

You are about to observe

[gong crash]

The Forces!

Observe the engine.

It will create the force called...

thrust, that pushes the plane forward.

Drag, it's counter force,

wants the plane to stand still.

When Thrust overcomes Drag,

the plane moves forward!

Uh, that's all well and good,
Mr. Wise Old Owl Dude,

but even a car moves forward.

Yeah, we need to know
how a plane goes up

when there's nothing
underneath it.

Are you sure there's nothing
underneath it, young StoryBot?

Look closely.

Feel the Forces.

[chanting]
Om...

-Did he fall asleep again?
-I hope not.

[chanting]

Cha!

[StoryBots] Wow.

[StoryBots mumbling]

Did you see that? It's incredible.

What are all these tiny specks?

Air molecules, young StoryBots.

Invisible to the eye,
but around us all the time.

[Bang] Whoa...

Why are there
so many more of them

under the wing
than above them?

Observe the wing's shape,
young StoryBot.

They slant down.

Yeah, and they're
curved in front!

Precisely.

This shape causes
air molecules to bunch up

under the wing,

while the air molecules on top speed by.

[StoryBots] Whoa!

As the plane moves faster,

more and more of them gather,

creating pressure
under the wings,

that pushes the plane up.

This is the force called Lift.

[StoryBots in jumble]
Wonderful! Awesome!

And when Lift overcomes
the force of Weight,

which holds things down,

the plane will rise.

[StoryBots exclaiming]
Wow! Awesome! So cool! Sweet!

Thrust, drag, weight, and lift!

Four forces that make the airplane fly.

[chanting]
Om... Cha!

Well, it looks like we got our answer.

[StoryBots cheering]
All right. Whoo-hoo.

Thanks, Mr. Wise old owl dude.

-Parachutes ready?
-Ready!

-Let's go.

-Boop.

[Bo screams]

Yeah. There're like these forces
in the universe.

Thrust is the force
that pushes planes forward.

Drag is the force
that wants to make 'em stop.

Weight is the force
pulling them down.

And lift is the force
that pushes them up!

Pushes them up? Against what?

There's nothing underneath 'em!

But there is!
They're called air molecules!

You can't see them,

but they're all around us, man.

And the shape of the wings
make more air molecules

go beneath 'em then above 'em...

Those air molecules smush together
and push the plane up.

And when the force of lift

is greater than the weight of the plane...

That's how airplanes fly!

Just--just gimme that tape!

♪ On an object's course ♪

♪ That's a force ♪

♪ And there are four
We've got to identify ♪

♪ If you wanna know
How airplanes fly ♪

♪ They're thrust,
Drag, weight, and lift ♪

♪ Thrust is the force
Of forward motion ♪

♪ And move forward you will ♪

♪ As long as you overcome
The force of drag ♪

♪ That can keep you
Standin' still ♪

♪ The other part is the
Upward part ♪

♪ Which starts with
The shape of the wings ♪

♪ If you compare the air
Above and beneath 'em ♪

♪ You'll find a big
Difference between 'em ♪

♪ The air on bottom gets ♪

♪ All bunched up creating pressure ♪

♪ While the air on top
Speeds quickly along ♪

♪ So its force
On the wing is lesser ♪

♪ That creates
A force called lift ♪

♪ Which lifts you
Off the ground ♪

♪ As long as it's stronger
Than the force of weight ♪
