Oh, I don't know anything
about the sky.

The sky is big.

Well, I figured if we want
to know why the sky is blue,

we need to get as close
to it as possible.

[Beep]

-[Bang] Awesome Idea!

Uh... Beep,
I hate to break it to you,

but the sky's not blue.

No, it's, uh... It's black!

That's only because it's--

[StoryBots screaming]

The sky is only black
because it is nighttime.

Look, the sun is rising.

[soft piano music playing]

-[needle scratching record]
-Guys! Did you see that?

The sky wasn't only blue. It was made up
of lots of different colors.

-Uh, yeah.
-It was pretty.

[laughs]

Who do we know that knows
a lot about colors?

Dude. An artist knows a lot about colors.

-Great idea.
-I love art.

-Let's go visit an artist.
-And find out why the sky is blue.

[Bang]
Oh, that is a terrific idea.

-[Bing] Yeah. Come on, guys.
-[Beep] Here we go.

[all chattering excitedly]

[Beep]
I've never met an artist before.

[suction sound]

[tapping]

♪ Yo! Blue is my favorite berry ♪

♪ The color of the sky
So it's necessary yeah ♪

♪ Light blue dark blue
The shades may vary yeah ♪

♪ But blue is a color
That we call primary ♪

♪ Blue for eyes blue is cool ♪

♪ Blue is the water
In your swimming pool okay ♪

♪ Blue is the ocean that you sail ♪

♪ You might see a blue beard
Or a big blue whale yeah ♪

♪ Blue for birds blue for sad ♪

♪ Blue screens let you know
Your computer crashed ♪

♪ So the first thing that I do ♪

Yeah, how can we ask an artist
why the sky is blue

if we cant find him in all this clutter?

Well, we've got to keep trying.
Eva's counting on us.

-[Artist] No. No. No.
-Dudes, do you hear that?

[Artist] This is horrible.
No. That's not it.

It's the worst thing I've ever painted.

-[crash]

[sobbing]

Not now. I'm suffering
from a complete lack of inspiration.

[sobbing]

Please, Mr. Artist. We just need

Look at you. The colors. The shapes.

I must paint you right now.

[Beep] Um, we're flattered, Mr. Artist,

Um, Mr. Artist guy?

We know you're really inspired and all,
and that's great,

but we're trying to answer
a question for a girl named Eva.

Huh? You are?

Well, why didn't you just say so?

What's the question?

Uh, uh, she wants to know
why the sky is blue.

Why is the sky blue?

Why is the apple red?
Or the banana yellow?

Wait. Let me show you.

I just need to collect a few things.

Oh, where are my canvases?

I don't need that. I need that.

Oh, what a mess.

-Ooh, ah, ah, there it is!
-[chicken squawks]

Okay, now pay attention.

The sky looks blue during the day
because of light from the sun.

You can't see it,

but light is made up of lots
of different color waves.

Oh, yes. [laughing]

[Bo gasping]
You mean like waves in the ocean?

These waves are different.

They're invisible.

[Bang] Whoa!

You can see here that red waves
are really, really long,

blue waves are really, really short,

and yellow waves are in the middle.

Different color waves bounce
off different objects.

Red waves bounce off of an apple.

Yellow waves bounce
off of a banana.

So there must be something
in the sky that blue waves

are bouncing off of.

But, Mr. Artist,
there's nothing in the sky

for blue color waves
to bounce off of.

Are you sure?

Did you look everywhere?

Even for things that are...

really, really,
really, really, really small?

Hey. Good point.

Maybe there's something really,
really, really, really, really small

in the sky that blue color waves
are bouncing off of.

-[Bo] Oh.
-[Bing] Yeah.

[Beep] Yeah. I bet that's it.

You have to zoom way in to see us!

You're gonna have to zoom

We're microscopic!

Back it up and... perfect.

So, uh, what exactly
are we looking for, Beep?

Well, I'm not a hundred percent sure,

but it's something blue color waves
bounce off of.

Guys, look over there.
What are those?

[indistinct murmuring]

[Bo]
Ooh, there's so many of them.

[Beep] Let's head over
and see if they can help us

answer Eva's question.

-Yeah.
-Sounds good to me.

So then I said,

"Orange you glad I didn't say banana."

[all laughing]

We're StoryBots.

We're here to answer a question
for a girl named Eva.

[particles laughing]

The sky itself isn't blue.

Yeah. It just looks
that way because of us.

We're particles and gas molecules.

Yeah. We're tiny specs of stuff
floating around in the sky.

-I'm a nitrogen molecule.
-I'm oxygen.

And I'm dust.

[coughing]

I hate to break it to you guys,

but you're not blue.

We're not made of color, StoryBots.

It's just that
when light bumps into us,

it's the blue color waves
that bounce around

and scatter all over the sky.

And that's why the sky looks blue.

So...

it's sorta like the red waves
that bounced off the apple.

Yeah, and the yellow waves
that bounced off the banana.

-[O] Look.
-[StoryBots] Huh?

Hold tight, guys.

[particles] Whoo-hoo!

[zapping]

[molecules yelling]

We need to find out why the sky is blue.

We got the answer boss.

Yeah.

There's, like, these
super tiny things in the sky

called particles and gas molecules.

And they're so tiny, you can't
even see 'em. They're like invisible.

Yeah, but they can still get hit
by light from the sun.

And light isn't just one color.

It's made up of lots
of different color waves.

I don't need all the colors, StoryBots.
Just blue.

Well, when the sunlight bumps
into the particles and gas molecules,

it's mostly the blue light waves
that scatter across the sky and...

[StoryBots]
That's what makes the sky blue.

Just gimme that tape.

♪ It starts with the sun
That shines from way up high ♪

♪ Those sunny beams so bright ♪
