How do you make music?

Hmm, that's a tough one.

How do you make music?

Well, do you know how to play any instruments, Mya?

I play the piano.

Wow, really? Can you play the banjo?

Whoa, what about the drums?

Yes.

Bing, just because Mya can play music doesn't mean she knows how it's made.

-Oh, yeah, you're right. -I didn't think about that.

[gasps] Hey, wait, I got it! I know where we can find the answer!

[beeping]

StoryBots, prepare for transport.

Let's find out how you make music.

[all] Outer World, here we come!

[whirring]

Almost, mm... Ahh.

Perfect.

-Aah! -[grumbling]

[laughing]

[both laughing]

[all yelling]

[whirring]

[yelling and grunting]

[gasps] Oh, Bing, this was a great idea.

[Bing] Yeah, where better to learn about music

than a music shop?

All we have to do is play an instrument, and we'll have our answer.

Bing, I don't think it's that simple--

-[oboe blaring] -[all yelling]

Oh, that did not sound like music, man.

Well, feast your ears on this.

[violin screeching]

[all groaning]

Hmm. Music's gotta come out of one of these.

[plays instruments badly]

Aah!

[panting] Ahh...

Why won't these make music?

I don't know, man.

This seems, like, mega difficult. [strums]

-Whoa! -[gasping]

That sounds like music!

Whoa, Bing, how'd you do that?

Just naturally talented, I guess.

Look! A music thingy!

[all] Whoa!

Come on, guys, let's follow it and see where it goes.

-Yeah, come on, guys! -Let's do it!

Hey, look! It's going down the tuba.

[all] Whoa!

[all yelling]

[Bang] I don't think we're in the tuba anymore, dudes.

Look! There's more of those music thingies.

Why are we just standing around? Come on, guys, follow me! Let's g--

-[bells chiming] -[groans]

[laughing]

[laughing in different pitches]

You'll never get into Music Land ringing the bells like that.

[all] Music Land?

Is there an echo?

[laughing in different pitches]

Could you tell us how to get into Music Land, Mr. Horn Thingy?

It's easy. Just ring the bells to climb the wall.

You mean, like this?

[bells chiming randomly]

No, no, no. You can't make just any noise.

It needs to be a melody that

[in different pitches] gets you over the wall.

Melody, huh? What's melody?

Melody is a string of pitches you can sing along with.

Pitches? What are those?

[high-pitched] Pitch is how high a sound is.

-Oop! -[honks]

[low-pitched] Or how low a sound is.

-Aah! -[laughing]

So, if pitch is how high or low a sound is,

and melody is a string of pitches,

then, to get over this high wall,

maybe we need to play a melody that gets higher in pitch.

Like this.

[plays melody that gets higher in pitch]

[all] Oh!

The melody is making more of those music thingies!

Those aren't "music thingies." They're music notes.

Well, whatever they are, they're making stairs.

Come on, guys, let's go!

[all grunting]

-There we go. -Whoa.

Oh, hey, look! It's the castle!

That's right! Just follow the path to the King of Music.

[all] King of Music?

[gasps] I bet he can help us answer Mya's question.

Of course, he can. He's a living legend.

But you better stay on the path.

You don't wanna get...

[low-pitched] lost.

[laughs]

-[laughing] -Thank you so much, Mr. Horn!

-Bye! -See ya!

Yea-- Aah!

[laughing in low-pitch]

[whirring]

-[classical music plays] -Huh!

[music stops]

[rapid classical music plays]

[dramatic music plays]

[music starts and stops]

-[crickets chirping] -Hmm?

[crickets start and stop]

Hmm.

-[rumbling] -Aah!

[squeaking]

[laughing]

Instruments.

[both laughing]

[cricket chirping]

♪ From the great, big grand piano To the tiny tin kazoo ♪

♪ There are tons and tons of instruments Let's try and name a few ♪

♪ There's the xylophone The slide trombone ♪

♪ The banjo with its snappy twang The bongo drums are fun to bang ♪

♪ The violin, the theremin ♪

♪ The ukulele by the bay So many instruments to play ♪

♪ The clarinet, the little coronet ♪

♪ The tuba with its oompah sound The crashing cymbals, big and round ♪

♪ The bagpipe too, the didgeridoo ♪

♪ The ocarina made of clay So many instruments to play ♪

♪ Some people like to Strum the balalaika ♪

♪ Some like to play The ringing harpsichord ♪

♪ Harmonica, musical saw And the gigantic alpine horn ♪

[horn blares]

♪ The guitar, the harp, the piccolo The double bass, the diddley bow ♪

♪ The pan pipes and the timpani The French horn, the calliope ♪

♪ The glockenspiel, the bells, the gong ♪

♪ And many more not in this song ♪

♪ What a lot of sounds, hooray So many instruments to play ♪

[orchestra playing]

[triangle chimes]

[whirring]

Oh, I can't wait to meet the King of Music.

Well, as long as we follow the path, we should be there in no ti--

[all] Whoa!

[Bang] That's a pretty big hole, man.

How will we ever make it across?

[two voices] We can show you how.

[inhales and blows a single pitch]

[all] Whoa!

[grunts]

As you can see,

a single pitch all by itself can only take you so far.

But in order to get that extra oomph,

you need to use some harmony.

Harmony? What's that?

Harmony's what you get when you combine two or more pitches.

To create a sound that's pleasing.

[both] Like this.

[inhales]

[harmonizing two pitches]

-Whoa! -So cool!

[playing harmonized melody]

That sounds beautiful.

Whoa, the music notes are, like, heading to the other side.

Grab on, guys!

-Huah! -Huh!

-Huah! -Boop!

Oh! Whoa! Aah!

Whoa, it's, like, super breezy up here, man.

I just wish we were a little closer to the ground.

[rhythmically] When you go fast or slow, that's tempo.

Yeah! I hope he's, like, all benevolent and stuff.

-[three voices] Halt! -Huh?

To see the King of Music, you must get past us first.

Only those familiar with the musical element "timbre" are allowed entry!

OK! Well, uh... What's timbre?

Timbre is the quality of sound.

Shh, Jerry, don't tell them!

Timbre is what makes one sound different from another.

Garry, quiet!

Kind of like how this...

[cello plucks]

Has a different timbre than this.

[cello plays]

No, you're giving everything away!

We're guards! We're supposed to guard the castle!

So, this... [claps]

Guys, we learned them on the way here, remember?

[melody plays]

[harmonized notes playing]

-And don't forget rhythm! -Oh, and timbre!

[b*at playing]

And what about... intensity?

Uh, what about intensity?

You know.

[emphatically] Intensity!

Uh... It's not ringing a bell, dude.

[sounds effects playing]

I guess if you want something done, you've got to do it yourself.

So, musically speaking, intensity is the volume of sound.

With it, things can be very soft.

[pitch plays softly]

[loudly] Or very loud!

[pitch plays loudly]

[all] Ooh!

Now, what was that element?

[all] Intensity.

I can't hear you!

[all louder] Intensity!

A little bit louder!

[all louder] Intensity!

Oh, wait! That's too intense! Oh, no!

[crashing]

Well, it sure looks like you all know your elements of music.

I mean, look at what you've done here!

I guess we just got a little carried away.

Ah, that's all right,

because I know the one secret to getting these elements back in shape.

What's that, Mr. King of Music?

Organization!

You see, without organization,

sounds are just noise.

But when melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre and intensity

are organized in a way that makes people feel things...

that's music.

-[all] Oh! -That's music!

In fact, music can make you feel all sorts of things.

It can make you feel happy.

[upbeat tune plays]

[feigns crying] Or sad.

[sad tune plays]

Or anything in between.

[groovy tune plays]

This one makes me feel groovy, man.

[rock tune playing]

This one makes me feel excited!

[upbeat tune playing]

And this one makes me feel like dancing.

Precisely.

So you see, StoryBots, you don't need to be royalty to know how to make music.

All you need are the five elements and a little bit of organization!

Well, it looks like we got our answer, guys!

We got the answer, boss. We know how you make music.

The first thing you need to know is that all music is made up of sounds.

Yeah, but not all sounds are music. Some are just plain noise.

For sounds to be music,

they need to be organized in a way that makes people feel something.

Like happy, sad, nervous, scared.

Or maybe just makes you wanna tap your toes, man.

There are five ways people organize sounds to make music.

Melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, and intensity.

Melody is a string of pitches you can sing along with.

And pitch is how high or low a sound is.

Harmony is when multiple pitches are played at the same time.

And rhythm is the way sounds repeat over time.

Timbre is what makes one thing sound different from another.

And intensity is how loud or soft the sounds are played.

So, when melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, and intensity

are organized in a way that make people feel something...

[all] That's how you make music.
