My name is Bang,
and I need to find out how bubbles work.

Well, you heard it here, folks.
Bang asking the big questions.

How does a bubble work?

-Right on cue!
-[crowd cheering]

Our final competitor,
Sudsy Sammy Sullivan, is taking the stand.

[Liz] Always a pleasure
to watch Sammy compete.

[JJ] Truly amazing what she can do

with a bubble-blowing wand,
water, and soap,

all generously provided
by Big Bubba's Bubblemania,

the world's leading bubbles superstore.

-[Bang] Oh, hey, she's about to start.
-[breathes deeply]

[JJ] Would you look at that focus?

-[whistle blows]
-[crowd cheers]

[JJ] Any avid bubble blower knows
water can't make bubbles on its own.

The most important ingredient is,
in fact, the soap.

Wait. What's so special about the soap?

Great question. Let's have a look
at our high-definition soap cam.

Right here, we have water molecules,

which are made of hydrogen
and oxygen atoms.

[Bang] Whoa, what's that?

Oh, this is a soap molecule.

One end of each molecule
is attracted to water and attaches to it.

The other end repels water
and wants to get away from it.

-[chuckles] That's soap for you.
-It sure is, Liz.

But, like, how exactly do molecules help
a bubble form?

Well, let's look at Sammy's wand technique
and show you.

Sammy displaying
a beautiful dip of the wand here.

[JJ] Let's kick on over
to our ultra zooming microscope cam

to see what's going on.

[Bang] Whoa, that looks cool.
But what am I looking at?

[Liz] Well, those are soap
and water molecules, Bang.

We have a thin layer of water
filling the open space of the wand.

Those soap molecules
attach to the water on both sides,

surrounding and protecting
the water layer.

[Bang] Oh, like a soap and water sandwich.

[JJ] Yeah, you could look at it like that.

Okay, but, like,
how does the bubble part work then?

Well, let's look at our state-of-the-art
bubble inflation cam.

Now that the water's protected,
all you gotta do is blow into the wand,

and the soapy water will stretch
over a bigger and bigger puff of air.

[Bang] Oh.

Speaking of which,
Sammy's about to blow her bubble.
