- [Donna] I don't think I could have done it by myself.

- I'm just glad that you didn't have to.

- You'd think it would be spookier, wouldn't you?

But it's not, it's nothing, it's just,

it's just ash, I mean this has nothing to do with my sister,

it's, it's nothing.

There's nobody, Eddie.

There's not one single person that I share memories with.

No one I went to school with.

No one who, who knew my nana.

Or who I went ice skating with in Sarajevo.

I know there was just Anna.

I'm so alone, Eddie.

Just...

I just feel so alone.

(somber music)

- Do you feel like seeing a movie or something?

- Who, who with?

- Forget it.

- What, you, you and me?

- Forget about it, don't worry.

- Yeah, no, I'd love to.

- I wasn't asking you out on a bloody date, Guido,

I just, I just felt like seeing a movie.

- Yeah, no, sure, so do I.

Um, when?

Um, not tonight, I can't tonight.

- No, me neither.

Jesus.

(energetic music)

It's like the whole world is a club.

Like there's a secret password, and I don't know it.

Open bloody sesame.

Let me in.

(giggling)

Hello!

Hey Paula, dropping off.

Hello, Mr. Magoo.

Nice sticker book.

(giggling)

I don't know if you can do anything with this.

- What is it?

- g*n oil.

I didn't sh**t anyone.

It's from the range.

(speaking foreign language)

(ominous music)

- [Cameron] Hi, Jimmy.

- Hi, Miss Smart.

- Cameron.

- They'll be ready tomorrow night.

- Thanks, no hurry.

See you, mate.

Bye, Mr. Magoo!

(somber music)

(sirens blaring)

Thanks.

Oh, hey.

- Cameron, right?

Guido's girl.

- Cameron, yeah, I was just down the road

and I thought I would--

- Oh, I think they'll manage to muck it up without our help.

- Hi.

- Have you eaten?

- Yeah, well, no, I've bought some stuff.

- Two-minute noodles?

Come with me.

Everything under control here, Adam?

- Pretty well, mate.

- Good, we can all sleep peacefully in our beds.

Come on.

(energetic music)

Hi.

I love this place.

You know many people in Chinatown?

- No.

- Interesting people.

So how do you find Guido?

- How do I find him?

- Yeah, how do you find him, I mean, uh,

is he a good man, a good cop, what's he like?

- I'd have thought you know what he's like.

- Fathers never know.

So uh, are you two close?

(chuckling)

- You mean are we screwing?

- Cut to the chase, don't you?

- I could say the same about you.

Aren't you supposed to be running that investigation?

- Ah, it's not an investigation, it's a joke.

Put these people in Chinatown,

they couldn't find their ass with a torch.

There could be witnesses, all taking a leak.

"I didn't see anything."

This is the good bit,

best salt and pepper squid in the world.

Eat up, it's good.

- So you're the Chinatown expert, then?

- Oh, there are no experts.

And there's only one rule.

Do as little as possible.

You didn't answer me.

About Guido.

- No, I didn't.

- Ah, Neil, you remember Cameron?

- Yeah. - Neil Tynan.

How's it going out there?

- Oh, homicide on top of it.

The dead bloke's Red Square.

- Oh, bugger me.

I'm sure you got some work to do, Neil.

- Yeah, I do, yeah.

Catch you later.

- [Cameron] Who's that?

- Bloke called Dai Lo.

Owns the place.

The other bloke, I don't know, I'm not sure.

- Runs the laundry.

- That a fact?

- Mm, it's no mystery.

He washes my clothes.

(speaking foreign language)

(phone ringing)

Hello?

- You okay? - Terrific.

- [Guido] That business about the movies,

I wasn't trying to be funny.

- You, never.

- Oh, just as long as you know.

- [Cameron] Yeah, I know.

- So what are you wearing?

- Thigh-high boots and a thong.

- [Guido] Mm, I'll see you at work.

- Yeah, right, bye.

(mellow music)

- Morning.

Morning?

- Morning, boss.

- You're doing lots of hours.

- So are you.

- What about, um, ice skating?

You know anything about ice skating?

- You're weird, Mercia.

- What's so weird about that?

- Yes!

I love surveillance cameras.

I know this guy.

- Who's that?

- Oh, I don't know the name, but I saw him last night

right before the sh**ting in Chinatown.

It was about :, and this shows him there

right after that.

- Any way to trace him?

- [Cameron] Jimmy, my laundry man,

knows him, they were talking.

- Good work, pass it on to homicide.

- Oh, there's nothing really to pass on.

I mean, I don't even know his name, I don't know anything.

- You mean you want to chase it up yourself.

Okay, but when you find out his name,

give it to homicide, I'm sure they'll cope.

- I hope so.

They couldn't find their ass with a torch.

(mellow music)

Hey, you're driving.

Hey.

- Oh, it's not ready yet, come back tonight.

- That's okay, Paula, I'm not here for my washing.

Um, this is my partner, Detective Martin.

(speaking foreign language)

- Hey, Jimmy.

Um, did you hear about the sh**ting last night?

- Oh, everybody heard, but we don't know anything.

We very busy.

- I need to know the name of the man

that you were talking to here last night when I was here.

- What man?

- [Cameron] Uh, the man with the scar.

- I don't remember.

- Jimmy, the man with the scar and the snakeskin boots.

You were talking to him out the back.

- Sorry, I don't remember.

- Uh, this man.

- [Jimmy] I do not know him.

- [Cameron] I saw you talking to him, Jimmy.

- No, you make a mistake.

- Uh, Mr. Wu, I know it's not a very good photo,

but maybe you should have another look.

- Look, we have answered your questions.

You're on our property and business,

and we want you to leave.

- We're very busy, please.

- Where's Peter?

(ominous music)

- He's away.

- [Guido] Who's Peter?

- He's away without Magoo.

- He must have dropped him.

- [Cameron] Who's he away with?

- He's with his auntie.

- [Cameron] What's the address?

- [Paula] She lives in Brisbane.

- Can I borrow that pen?

So what's the address in Brisbane?

- Um, uh, Fortitude Valley.

I'll have to go and look up the street address.

- Okay, I'll wait.

Yeah, Tracey, hey, it's Cameron.

Is Donna or Eddie there?

Peter hasn't let that dog out of his sight

since he was old enough to blink.

You know, you can hear the tantrums in Borneo

if Paula even tries to take that thing away from him.

- So what are you saying?

- I'm saying someone's taken the kid.

- Because of the dog?

- Yeah, because of the dog,

and because these people are terrified of something.

- Wait, so you're tying this abduction, kidnap,

whatever, you're tying it to the sh**ting?

- Well, yes, all right, maybe, you know?

The sh**t was here, arguing with Jimmy.

- They were arguing?

- Yeah, well, it's Chinese, who knows, okay?

But say the guy's, (siren blaring)

he's here, they're arguing,

then he goes to the Golden Treasure,

he does the sh**ting, he comes back, he takes the boy.

- He's a busy fella.

- Yeah, okay, so I haven't figured out

the finer details, all right?

He comes back here and takes the boy, for what,

money, silence, whatever,

and then, and then-- - Parry.

- Donna, hey, it's Cameron.

- [Donna] Oh, g'day, Cam.

- Hi, listen, I need you to do

an urgent check for me in Brisbane.

Yeah, I need you to send out uniforms

to an address in Fortitude Valley.

- Hey, Dad.

How's it going?

- Not bad, yourself?

- Thought you might have turned up

to Mum's birthday last night.

- No, I don't think she's want me there.

- So, um, who are these guys?

- Nobodies, trying to be gangsters.

No class at all.

Hey.

Cameron, how are you doing?

- Good, thanks, Bill.

- Back for some more squid already?

- Yeah.

(phone ringing)

Uh, Smart.

- [Donna] Yeah, Cam, it's me.

- Oh, yeah, Donna, hi.

How'd you go?

- Yeah, you can forget that number in Fortitude Valley,

there's no such place.

Don't worry about the number, there's no such street.

- All right, good.

Does he operate after hours?

- Okay, see you. - Yeah?

Well, what if I pay him a bit extra on the side?

- What are you up to?

- Well, you never know.

All right, thanks, buddy, see ya.

What's that?

- [Donna] What are you up to?

- Me, nothing.

- You definitely have that I'm up to something

look on your face.

(mellow music)

Cheeky bugger.

- So what, you, you had dinner with him?

- Yeah, why, is that a problem?

- No, no, no, no.

I just think he's, um, so what kind of dinner was it?

- Chinese, it was a Chinese kind of dinner.

(suspenseful music)

Here we go.

Come on!

We were talking shop, and he suggested

we eat while we do it.

That's all.

- Yeah, well, you don't know him.

It's never that's all with him.

Last time he looked in the mirror, he looked pretty good.

That was years ago.

Anyway, the man's got no shame.

You know, I just thought you should be aware of that.

- I don't think he looks that shabby,

in a kind of lived-in sort of a way.

- Don't play with me.

Too seedy, don't, Cam.

Seriously.

- Here we go.

Jimmy.

Jimmy!

What's in the bag?

- Let me go. - What's in the bag?

- It's none of your business.

- Yes it is. - Not your business!

- I know something's happened to Peter, Jimmy, I know it.

What's in the bag? - Please go away.

- No, you have to come with me.

- It's nothing to do with you.

- [Cameron] grand.

- What's the money for, Jimmy?

Do you owe this man money?

See, we know that % of businesses in Chinatown

pay protection every week, well,

we call it extortion, but that's just splitting hairs.

We're gonna find this guy.

That's one thing you can count on, Mr. Wu.

Yeah, and there's a whole, whole bloody nest

of homicide Ds here busting to get this guy.

They're not gonna tiptoe around.

They don't care, they don't care about abduction.

I know you do, with your son and all,

but if the worst was to happen,

they could get this guy for two murders,

and get double brownie points.

- Jimmy.

People get hurt, which is why you

need to let us help you, okay?

If you talk to us, we will go through this with you.

We'll make sure you get Peter back.

- The money's not for this man.

This man does not have my son.

- Where's my husband?

- Paula, you're the only one that can talk to him.

Peter's life is in your hands right now.

If you want him back alive, you have to talk to Jimmy.

- No, we want to go home now, Cameron.

- This way.

I don't know what I'm meant to do.

Just let him waltz out of here with his bag of money

and shut my eyes?

- How well do you know the Wus?

They're personal friends?

- Not enough to compromise me.

I can push it, I could thr*aten to charge them

with accessories before or after the fact,

because they definitely know something,

or maybe conceal a serious offense, the kidnap, or...

Goods in custody, the money.

It's black money, dodging taxes, it's gotta be.

- Charitable. - Dirty sample.

- Yeah, well, I'm trying to save their kid's life,

whether they like it or not.

- You tell me what you need, after you've talked to them.

- Okay.

Yeah?

- Could you have a seat, Mrs. Wu?

Now, what we've got here is called goods in custody.

Which is goods on a person which is either stolen

or unlawfully obtained.

- But it is our money.

We have done nothing wrong.

- It's a funny law, this one.

The onus of proof, it's reversed,

and you have to prove that you got this money lawfully.

If you can't, we take it.

- No. - Yes.

We can, and we will.

- But we need it! - Yeah, I know.

Because somebody's got Peter, and this is the ransom.

But they're criminals, and experience shows

if you try to deal with criminals,

Peter is likely to get hurt.

So we're gonna seize this money.

Sorry, but if I don't take this money,

you're not gonna cooperate with us, okay?

It's gone.

(speaking foreign language)

(sobbing)

- You promise Peter will be safe.

- No one can promise that, Mr. Wu.

- I promise.

(somber music)

- Okay.

- Okay.

- The sh**ting looks like a g*ng thing.

The dead guy was a known Red Square member,

he'd drawn and discharged his w*apon.

Understand you got a good look at the sh**t.

Detective Smart? - Cameron?

- Perfect, me to you.

- Good, so if we catch him, we can nail him.

I want a team on the sh**ting.

What's happening with the kidnapping?

- The Wus are cooperating.

They've been asked to put $, cash into a sports bag.

Mr. Wu is to stay at the laundry.

Mrs. Wu is to deliver it alone at five o'clock

to the corner of Little Hay and Dixon Street.

- And they specified the woman.

- That's right.

Cameron will accompany her.

We'll be working with SPG and VEVO.

(suspenseful music)

- Thanks.

(sirens blaring)

- Give them the money and let them buy their son back.

- What?

I can't.

- A kid d*ed last year,

froze to death in a shipping container.

You let Gallagher handle things,

that's what's gonna happen to this boy.

- That's not true.

Historically, the best chance these people have

is to do this under police supervision.

- There's no bloody history, there's Anglo history.

In Chinatown, it doesn't mean squat.

There's a dozen abductions and kidnappings every year

we never even get to hear about.

Just let them go.

- No.

- You're gonna get that boy k*lled.

- Come on.

(doors slamming)

(engine revving)

- [Officer] Alpha Three's got eyeballs on the friendly.

Corner of Dixon and Little Hay.

We're in position.

- We've got Cameron.

We've got Guido.

And we've got backup, up there.

- Where?

- You guys in position?

- [Officer] Alpha Two in position.

- [Officer] Alpha Three in position.

- [Neil] Alpha Two, stay tight on the friendly.

(sighing)

Alpha Three, stay a bit loose.

Maintain obs on the crowd.

- Alpha Two in position.

(sighing)

- She's looking toey.

Can anyone spot anything down there out of the ordinary?

Stay sharp, guys.

They can only come in from Sussex Street.

Friendly's looking toey.

Maintain positions.

- [Officer] Coming down Dixon Street towards the friendly.

- [Neil] Stay tight on the friendly.

Six foot fella coming your way.

Just have a look at this guy, would you?

- Something's gone wrong.

- Hold your position.

- [Officer] Uh, copy that, Alpha Three.

- Bill!

Jesus.

- Half of Chinatown knows you're here,

and they're busy telling the other half.

- [Cameron] Have you come here just to gloat,

or is there a point, sir?

- I've come here because there's a little boy somewhere

who could be freezing or suffocating

while you lot stand around playing detective.

- [Officer] We have a development.

(tires squealing)

- [Neil] All teams stand by.

I've got a silver sports car, plate number ,

coming towards the friendly.

- Jimmy!

- Let them go!

If you touch them, the others will k*ll the kid.

Leave them.

(speaking foreign language)

- [Neil] All teams standing by.

- Hold your fire!

- They came to the laundry,

and this is for telling the police.

- I'm sorry, Jimmy.

- It doesn't matter.

Peter's still alive.

They gave us one more day.

- [Neil] It's turned to sh*t.

All alpha teams, back to base for debrief.

- [Officer] Alpha Three, copy that.

- [Officer] Alpha Two, copy that.

(sobbing)

(speaking foreign language)

- Nothing's broken, hospital's released him.

- Can he identify who did it?

- He says he doesn't know.

Reckons they were wearing balaclavas.

That's his story.

And he's not gonna cooperate any further.

- What'd they get on the vehicle?

- Stolen plates.

Surveillance lost them in town.

And what do ya got on the sh**ting?

There's gotta be a connection.

- I've got a guy coming in from Long Bay, you know.

He used the same g*n in a holdup six months ago,

maybe he can tell us who's got it now.

(footsteps approaching)

- You were right.

I got Jimmy bashed.

I might've got his son k*lled.

- Maybe.

Maybe not.

But if you'd picked up the guys who bashed your laundry man,

then the others would've k*lled your boy.

- So how do I get him back?

- Depends what you're prepared to do.

- Anything you want.

(suspenseful music)

- Trace, can you take these guys through?

(phone ringing)

You've, uh, you've been talking to Cameron.

- Yes, I have.

- She's in a bit of a bad way.

You know, over the boy.

- Yeah, she is.

- Vulnerable.

- Yes.

- Yeah, and I wouldn't want to see her get hurt.

Go down the wrong path.

- What are you getting at, Guy?

- Your path.

Is that clear enough?

- Do you want the boy back, or don't you?

- If you hurt her, I will cut you off at the knees.

I will cut you down.

- What happened to your face?

- Nothing.

I fell over.

- [Donna] Did another prisoner do that to you?

- No.

Why am I here?

- It's the g*n from the holdup,

it's been used in a sh**ting.

A man is dead.

- That has nothing to do with me.

I'm already in jail.

- It has a lot to do with you, actually.

See, you gave the g*n to the sh**t.

Or sold it to him, whichever.

He goes and kills somebody with that g*n,

that makes you an accessory before the fact.

- Or you can tell us who you sold it to.

There'll be no further charges.

We can have you transferred to another jail.

Get you away from whoever's doing that.

- Zhun Jien.

He's called Snake.

(speaking foreign language)

- Mr. Zhun.

Mr. Zhun?

I think you might wanna come with us.

- Hello, Snake.

Your dad's gonna be disappointed in you,

getting yourself caught.

What have you got him on?

- The Golden Treasure sh**ting.

- Cameron ID'ed him?

- Not yet, but it's a lock.

(suspenseful music)

- I thought your friends were tits on a bull,

but they might be some use after all.

Come with me.

Now we've got something to trade.

When you do a deal in Chinatown, it's give or take,

and don't think you hold all the cards

because you're a cop, you don't.

- A deal for what?

- The boy.

I'm gonna be introducing you to a man called Dai Lo.

When you meet him, I want you to treat him with respect.

- All right.

- He's run Chinatown for years.

Now there's a new g*ng of street thugs moving in,

they call themselves Red Square.

They're trying to extort money

from the people Dai Lo's already protecting,

like your friends at the laundry.

Yeah, Jimmy phoned Dai Lo, told him the Red Square guys

were getting heavy with him, so Dai Lo sends Snake around.

That's the conversation you saw.

- So Snake went straight from the laundry

to the Golden Treasure.

- Yeah, just trying to reason with the guys,

you know, but they're thugs.

They wouldn't listen, one of them pulled a g*n,

and Snake sh*t him.

So the Red Square took Jimmy's son as retribution.

- So the Red Square still has the boy.

- [Bill] Yeah, but Dai Lo can get him back.

- And why would he do that?

- Because you've got his boy.

Snake's his son.

(sighing)

Dai Lo, this is Cameron Smart.

Detective Smart.

- I see.

What can I do for you, Miss Smart?

- This is about Peter Wu, the son of Jimmy and Paula Wu.

- Cameron likes to cut to the chase.

- [Dai Lo] I don't have the boy.

- We know you don't.

But Detective Smart has your son.

He's in the holding cell at Southwest

in connection with the Golden Treasure sh**ting.

- I'm not particularly concerned.

Yes?

There's no witnesses.

- There's a photograph.

- [Bill] We do have an eyewitness

who can link your son to the photograph,

and the photograph links him to the sh**ting.

- And who is this brave eyewitness?

- Detective Smart.

- I see.

What do you want?

- We want the boy.

- [Dai Lo] I don't have the boy.

- No, but you can get him back.

It might be expensive, but you can get him back safely.

- And in return?

- Sons should be with their fathers.

- Miss Smart?

- No.

- The sh**ting was in self-defense.

- You don't know that.

That's for a jury to decide.

- Not this time.

This time it's you.

The boy could be in a shipping container,

he could be buried alive.

Sometimes we just have to throw away the damn book.

- Whatever you decide, you honor,

for the sake of the Wu family.

(suspenseful music)

- He's not here.

- [Donna] That's bullshit.

- Cameron.

What was that all about?

- I can't identify him.

- You had a clear view.

"From me to you," I think you said.

You had the scar, perfect lighting.

- I can't be certain.

- We don't get to draw the line, Cameron.

The line is drawn.

When we step across it, it becomes a question of how far.

None of us is capable of answering that question,

so we don't cross it.

(suspenseful music)

- Peter?

(laughing)

Hi!

Hi.

I know someone that's missed you.

Mr. Magoo.

Come here.

Hi.

You wanna go home?

Mm, okay.

- I might just, uh, I'll sit this one out.

- [Cameron] Thank you.

- You probably won't, at some point.

Go.

- You ready?

(speaking foreign language)

- You can take him home.

- Thank you.

- Don't answer me, I don't want you to answer me.

But you let a k*ller walk free.

It's a credit to you that you're not trying to rationalize.

- I'm sorry I let you down.

- I don't know what to say to you.

I'm supposed to guide you.

But I can't help thinking that I would've,

I don't know whether I would've done the same thing.

It would be easier if life handed us choices

between good and bad.

Sometimes it's just bad and less bad.

(somber music)

(sighing)

(knocking)

- What are you doing here?

- The battery on the mobile was flat,

and I just, I wanted to see what you were wearing.

Can I come in?

- Only if you promise not to be nice to me.

- Not a problem.

- Eddie.

(laughing)

Where are we going?

(electronic humming)

(haunting music)

(clapping)

(energetic music)
