Previously on "Heartland":

I can't seem to make ends meet!

So when Caleb told me about this prize money, I knew I had to try.

I just can't believe you didn't talk to me about it first.

This is my money!

It's our future!

Lou, can I have a friend over after school tomorrow?

Yeah, sure, what's her name?

His name is Stephen.

Amy, would you consider coming back to Hillhurst?

Only this time as my head trainer?

Are you serious?

Very.

I've been around long enough to know that when Ahmed looks at you, it's with more than professional admiration.

Lou, that's crazy!

I've been thinking a lot about Charger, and I'd like to take a look at him, see if there's anything that I can do to help.

Okay, well, what about us?

One thing at a time.

(Truck rumbles)

Tim: Amy, wait! Listen to me!

Now, Ty goes and makes the most ridiculous gamble in the world and you're gonna waste your valuable time trying to help out him and his stupid partner over a lost cause?!

I've gotta do something.

I can't just let Ty throw his money away!

But you've got a perfectly good job, honey.

Are you willing to--
Go, answer it.

Ahmed, hey.

Yes, um... I'm gonna be a little bit late, but I will be there.

There's just something that I have to take care of.

I'm really sorry.

Okay. Absolutely. Bye.

There it is right there. The prince.

He's gonna lose patience with you and then the cheques are gonna stop.

Dad, I can do my job and help Ty, okay?

Besides, it's really not your business what's my business!

(Cell phone rings)

I'm just trying... Answer it.

Ty, hey.

Yeah, no, I'm-
I'm on my way, okay.

I'll be there. Bye!

(Door slams)

So Caleb... Still trying to find a rider?

I don't think there's a barrel racer in Alberta you haven't texted.

Face it, that guy doesn't have it in him.

He's all speed and no reward.

But, hey, good luck with that.

She drives me crazy.

Well, I guess the word's out Charger's a non-starter.

So what if he's an underdog?

There's a reason people love underdog stories so much.

They always have happy endings.

Caleb, how are we gonna make this work?

Just relax. It's not over 'til it's over.

Where's Amy?

Jack, look at this trick saddle!

This is the one I want!

Isn't it cool?

Jack: Yes, it is.

Georgie: Now I just have to figure out how I'm gonna pay for it.

(Chuckles) Well...

(Georgie sniffs)
What's the deal with you?

Are you wearing perfume?!

Okay, the deal is, I have a lunch date.

Lisa is coming over.

(Phone rings)

Hello?

Yes, she is. Just hold on.

Stephen.

Hi!

Yeah, I can meet you.

I have to wait until Lou and my dad get home.

Actually, they're here right now.

Can I call you back?

Okay. Bye.

Um...

Stephen wants to meet me at Maggie's.

Can someone give me a ride?

Honey?

Yeah, sure. Let's go.

I'm here.

And the only reason I am is because I can't stand the thought of Ty losing all his hard-earned money, thanks to you!

I know, I know.

But he's a great horse, you'll see!

And all we have to do is get a handle on his one little problem.

I promise we won't take much of your time at all.

Okay, good, because Ahmed's already called me a few times this morning, wondering where I am!

Aww! Poor little needy prince!

Caleb, let's just get this done!

(Hooves thud)

Wow! This horse is great!

You guys don't need me, he's fine!

Well, hold on.

Ride him as fast as you can and start him in the alley.

Okay...

(Amy clucks her tongue)

Whoa! Steady! Hey! Steady...

(Charger snorts)

(Hooves thud)

Whoa! Whoa! Come on, you missed it!

Whoa! Whoa!

Now do you see the problem?

Yeah.
(Sighs heavily)

♪ And at the break of day

♪ you sank into your dream, ♪ you dreamer.

♪ You dreamer, ♪ you dreamer.

So you see what we're up against.

I mean our horse is incredibly fast.

But unless you can figure out how to get him around that first barrel, he's not gonna win anything, much less a high stakes futurity race.

Okay, well, do you want to give it another try?

Yeah! Yeah.

Yeah.

Oh, hold on.

Ahmed, hey.

Um...

Yeah, I'll be there within the hour--

Uh, hello?

Um...

I think he hung up on me.

Look, guys, I gotta go.

I'm sorry, I said I would help you, but I can't risk losing my real job.

Amy, wait.

(Sighs)

Are you still ticked off with me?

Well, are you?

Yeah, I guess I am.

Look, we have a deal, okay?

I will help you figure out that horse.

But...

I can't help thinking that this is what it's gonna be like when we're married.

You not telling me about big decisions until you've already made them?

I'm sorry, that's just how I feel.

You made a pretty big decision without telling me.

I gotta go.

So that was weird.

Hmm? - Dropping Georgie off to meet a boy.

Yeah. Sign of things to come I guess, huh?

(Sighs) What's wrong?

Um...

It's nothing, it's just Georgie and...

I'm trying not to worry, but I can't help it.

No, why?

Because she's met a boy at Maggie's?

No! (Groans)

Lou: Peter, don't you see? She has never called me "mom."

Never! Not once!

You know what?

I bet that's what makes us work.

Jack: What's that?

Well, I bet if we spent all our time together, we'd k*ll each other!

I would bet the opposite.

Oh, you would, would you?

All right, let's put that bet to a test: How about tomorrow you come and spend a few days at my house?

Your place?

Mmhmm.

See who wins this bet.

If we survive, that is.

You're on!

Yeah?

Amy: Ahmed, I am so sorry.

You know, there was something I had to do first.

Amy, I don't think you understand how important this training schedule is!

It's the world equestrian games!

I know.

I realize you have some deal to work with a horse - you've agreed to retrain him or whatever- how do you know that? Are you having me followed?

Or are you following me?

Follow you?! Hardly!

I simply phoned your house and your sister told me.

Oh...

Amy: Lou, why would you tell Ahmed anything about what I'm doing with Ty and Caleb?

He doesn't need to know about that!

I didn't realize it was such a big secret!

How was I supposed to know?

Georgie! Dinner!

I told Amy, it's only a matter of time before that prince realizes he doesn't have her full attention.

Not good!

I disagree. I think it's a very good thing that she doesn't give that guy her full attention.

Okay, what is that supposed to mean?!

You know exactly what I mean.

And where's Ty?

I thought he was coming for dinner!

Yeah, well, I don't know. He's super stressed out.

The race is on Saturday and his horse still has a big problem, and he and Caleb don't have a rider!

Caleb doesn't know the difference between a futurity horse and a camel.

Why Ty would ever do this deal with him...

Somebody's gotta talk some sense into Ty!

Georgie: Jack, can you take me into town tomorrow?

The new trick saddle came in at Maggie's, right, Lou?

Yes, it did.

I wanna go see it!

Sorry, Georgie, I've got plans.

I'm gonna be away for a couple of days.

Where are you going?

Oh, something to attend to.

Well, I hope you're back by this weekend.

The futurity race is on Saturday.

Yep, we're showing it at Maggie's.

Expecting a full house.

Oh. Great.

Yeah, I got three words for you: Big. Screen. TV.

Good idea, right?

Georgie: And I'm waitressing.

You're gonna pay me, right, Lou?

What's wrong with you, man?

It was just a late night.

Ty: Okay...

Here she goes.

(Charger squeals and snorts)

Amy: Arghh! Come on, Charger!

(Groans)

Okay, let's keep going, then.

So what happened last night?

Well, Charlene called me up out of the blue and asked me out.

It turns out she just wanted to tell me that she'd be riding another guy's horse in the barrel race on Saturday.

(Hooves thud)

I tried talking her into switching.

Did it work?

No, but I sure had a good time!

(Laughs)

Charlene: Well... Caleb: Hey!

I've gotta give you marks for trying.

Hi...

Hi.

(Sighs)

Charlene: I'm Charlene Young. Amy: Oh! Amy Fleming.

I've never seen you on the circuit.

I'm not a barrel racer.

Oh, really.

Well, that would explain a few things.

Caleb: Amy's gonna figure out why Charger keeps doing what he's doing and she's gonna fix him for us.

Charlene: Fix him? Okay, how?

As I'm sure you know, a winning barrel horse has to know how to rate and that's not something you can fix in a hurry.

In simple terms, rating means slowing down and positioning the horse properly for the barrel turn, and that's gonna take months of time and practice.

He knows how to rate. He's got a great record.

Charlene: Fine.

But if you think you're gonna fix this guy by Saturday,
well, let's just say, I'm glad I'm not in your boots.

(Giggles)

(Caleb groans)

Lou: Where exactly are you going?

I'll keep in touch.

Yeah, what's with all the mystery?

Jack: There's no mystery!

Some things are private, that's all.

See you later!

Georgie: I wonder where they are going?

Lou: I have no idea!

You all set?

Yep. Can you take me to Maggie's to look at the new trick saddle after school?

Well, you can look.

I will probably have some work to do.

Amy: Look, guys, I'm really not sure what to tell you.

He just explodes out of the alley.

He's not even thinking, he's just running as fast as he can!

He has to be taken right back to basics!

The race is Saturday.

Yes, Caleb, I know!

And I would love to help you guys, but you realize this- it's not your problem. Yeah, I...

He's racey - it means he likes to run - which is what he's gonna do.

You guys are backing the wrong horse.

Caleb: Look, Tim, this horse was getting a lot of notice and his times were amazing.

Ancient history, Caleb!

I mean you're gonna embarrass yourself in front a bunch of professionals who know what they're doing.

You know how bad that's gonna be?

It's gonna look awful!

Okay, guys, I'm sorry. I gotta go to work.

Tim: Okay, honey.

Somebody's gotta make some money.

Ahmed: So you finally made it.

Amy, I am asking you to work with me, with my team.

And if it goes well, this could open up a whole new future for you.

If you don't want that, I understand.

No, I do want that. I do!

But Ty needs my help and he's my fiancee.

I admire your loyalty, but you cannot forget that we have an agreement as well.

All the work that she did...

She was amazing.

And I think about everything that she went through when my dad left and stuff and...

She was always so strong.

My mom was completely the opposite.

What do you mean?

Ty: She depended on my father completely and when he took off, she let Wade move right in there.

And both those guys took her for every penny that she had.

I hated watching it, so I uh...

I vowed to myself that I'd never be like those guys.

That's why I need to pull my own weight, Amy!

I can't live with myself if I don't.

And this whole down payment thing, it's something I have to do.

I get it.

I'm sorry I ever got involved with Caleb.

But now that I am, I have to see it through.

I know.

(Sighs)

Do you wanna watch the video with me?

Yeah.

Look how fast he is! It's unbelievable!

Wait a minute!

What?

Amy: Look at this. Right... there!

You see how high his head is?

There's no way he can see that first barrel!

It's physically impossible for him with his head that high!

Well, there's gotta be a way we can get around that.

Yeah... Maybe there is.

How about I work with him first thing tomorrow morning?

Are you sure you're free?

(Sighs) I guess.

Ahmed gave me a bit of an ultimatum.

What did he say?

Well, he's given me this chance to work with an international team.

It's an amazing opportunity, and...

Well, I'm kind of blowing it.

He's not happy.

Amy, I never wanted to put your job at Hillhurst in jeopardy.

No, you're not.

I'll work with Charger until the race on Saturday and then I'll decide what I'm gonna do.

What do you want to do?

I don't know.

Let's just focus on Charger for now.

(Sighs)

Hey, come here.

I appreciate your help.

And from now on, any decisions?

We'll make them together, I promise.

Hey, lights out, kiddo.

Okay?

Lou will be up in a minute, she's just reading to Katie.

You warm enough there?

Um... yep.

Can I ask you something?

Sure.

It's... Lou. She's not herself.

Like today, she made a big deal out of having a mother/daughter day.

She's never done that before.

Peter: Well, it's kinda nice though, don't you think?

She just loves being your mom, I think.

You know, just like she loves being Katie's mom.

Yeah, but it's kinda not the same, is it?

No, it's not exactly the same, but she is still your mom, just like I'm still your dad.

And I tell you, we both count ourselves pretty darn lucky that we are, too.

(Laughs)

I've never called anyone "mom" before.

Jeff says my first word was "dada."

I don't remember my mom, but... Jeff does.

It's kinda weird.

I bet it is.

(Sighs)

Good night.

Peter: Good night.

(Birds chirp)

Amy: So where will the laser be?

Caleb: Uh, it's just gonna be right about here.

Amy: Okay...

(Sighs) All right.

I'm gonna try and keep him collected and not give him his face.

We'll see how this goes.

(Stopwatch beeps)

(Charger snorts)

Amy: There you go!

(Charger pants)

Come on, come on, come on!

(Stopwatch beeps)

Amy: How was my time?

Caleb: Well, he made it around the first barrel, but a time like this is never gonna guarantee us a payday.

You gotta let him run, right from the start.

Amy: Let's try something else.

Hyaaah!

Ty: Okay, lookin' better!

Caleb: Yeah! Keep it up, Amy!

Amy: Get up! Get up! Get up!

(Hooves thud)

Caleb: Come on, Amy, bring it home! Bring it home!

Now we're talkin'!

If Amy can get Charger around the first barrel at top speed, we might just have a winner on our hands.

Caleb, winner? We don't even have a rider!

No, man, there's no way! There's no way!

I'm gonna ask her.

We have a back-up plan.

Charlene and I got together last night, and let's just say, she might be feeling a little differently about things today.

Caleb!

He is definitely improving.

Would you ride in the futurity race for us?

No, I won't.

Come on, Amy!

Amy: Caleb, I'm not a professional barrel racer and that's what you guys need!

Look, I'll keep working with Charger until the race, but you need to keep looking for a rider!

I- I have. I did...

(Gate rattles)

Lisa: Do you know that the entire time
that Lou and I ran this place together, I did not spend even one night here!

(Jack chuckles)

And it's so much nicer without guests!

Yeah, well, at least we don't have to listen to your cleaning lady's vacuum roaring away.

Lisa: I thought you brought me here to be romantic, not to escape my cleaning lady!

Huh!

Oh, Jack!

Jack: Oh, I'm sorry.

You didn't sleep well at all last night, did you?

Well, strange house, strange noises.

That furnace of yours makes some crazy sounds goin' on and off.

It does? I never noticed that.

But how was the company? Was the company good?

Oh, the company...

The company was very good.

(Yawning)

Well, I hope I don't keep you up!
(Lisa laughs)

Is he fixed?

Caleb: Well, he's improved incredibly, right, Amy?

Yeah.

Just I don't know, guys.

There was too much wrong with this horse for him to be an overnight miracle.

Well, there was also a lot right with him.

Just give him a try.

Charlene: Yah!

(Charger snorts)

Oh! Come on!

(Charger whinnies)

Okay, that was fun.

So you got him around the first barrel, did you?

Yeah.

Charlene: Good for you. Show me.

"Show me!"
That's what she said!

And then I did and it was a total disaster!

I swear that Ty and Caleb just brought her in there to make me feel bad for not riding Charger!

Lou: Yeah, but you never wanted to do that anyway, did you?

I mean, ride him in the actual race?

Well, all the same, they bring in this girl who doesn't get the horse at all!

I don't care if she's a professional, Lou.

She doesn't understand how the horse works and she's gonna ruin him!

He'll never barrel race again!

You wouldn't happen to be just a little bit jealous, would you?

No!

I'm going to bed.

(Laughs)

(Katie cries)

Lisa: This is so crazy!

Why did we even come back here?

We could've toughed it out at the dude ranch!

Jack: Well, you're tougher than I am!

That place was freezing my butt off!

Lisa: All right, look, let's just go back to my house.

Lisa, I haven't slept maybe 10 minutes in the last 24 hours!

I know, I know, so let's just-

I just need to be in my own bed for one night.

Besides, you have more pillows than I have ever seen in my life!

Oh, it's the pillows.

Well, I practically smothered in 'em.

You know what this is about?

This is about you not wanting me to win the bet!

Keep your voice down!

Oh, see!

Hey, guys.

Everything uh... okay?

Hi.

What's going on? Is everything all right?

Everything is fine.

So sorry to wake you up. Sorry.

Okay...

Go back to bed, honey.

Night, Dad.

Night. Good night.

See?

Good night!

This is all your fault! Come on!

Jack: (Laughs)

So uh...

Pretty crazy couple of nights, I admit, but at least we didn't k*ll each other and in spite of it, we're still laughing, right?

So I made a decision.

When you've finished your work with Charger, I want you to come back to work for me.

Oh, okay...

But I also want you to come to Europe with my team when we go to the world equestrian games next week!

What?

Mm-hmm!

Amy: Ahmed, that's... That is an incredible offer.

Yes, it is.

So what do you say?

Well, I... (Laughs)

I'm gonna have to think about it, I...

Besides, you'll probably change your mind after I mess up at the futurity race tomorrow.

You'll be fine.

Trust yourself. Trust your instincts.

After all, you are the miracle girl.

Mm.

(Exhales heavily)

Anyway, I hope you will take my proposal seriously.

I will.

(Laughs)

(Birds chirp, wind gusts)

Lou: Georgie!

It's time to get going, honey!

Has Amy left yet?

Are you kidding?

I'm pretty sure that she left at dawn.

Now, you're gonna be at Maggie's to watch the race, right?

You know that Amy's riding Charger?

Yes, I know all about it.

She's crazy!

Why do you have your suit bag?

(Katie babbles)

Oh! I'll be right back.

Jack, what's going on here?

That's your blue suit.

As far as I know, you only wear that for weddings and funerals and I don't know about anybody who's d*ed!

Jack? So what-

(door shuts)

(Gasps) No way!

(Chuckles gleefully)

Announcer: Here they are, ladies and gentlemen!

Let's hear it for our beautiful flag bearers!

(Crowd cheers)

Georgie: Oh, Stephen! I saved you a spot.

Stephen: Thanks.

Georgie: There you go.

(Diners chatter)

Oh! Hey! Turn it up!

Announcer: Welcome to the Hudson Pot of Gold Barrel Racing Futurity Race!

There's a lot of money on the table here today and before it's over, we're gonna see some very happy winners leave this building.

You feelin' okay?

I'm terrified!

Caleb: You're gonna be great!

(Sighs nervously)

(Birds chirp, truck rumbles)

(Engine idles, shuts off)

Hey, Jack.

Randy.

Nice day!

Thanks for coming.

The events are starting!

Announcer: This is Sizzlin' Speedball owned by Clint Silzer, ridden by Brittany Bracewell.

(Crowd cheers)

(Cheering)

(Hooves thunder)

Announcer: And there's Brittany's time.

13.841 seconds!

Amy: Look at those times! I don't stand a chance.

(People chatter softly)

That really raised the bar.

Lou?

You remember Stephen, right?

Yes, but um...

I don't think we were properly introduced.

Oh! Well, Stephen, this is...

Lou... my mom.

Hi.

Hi.

(Laughs)

(Crowd cheers)

(Hooves thunder)

Announcer: What a great run! Look at that time!

Lisa: Thank you.

(Both laugh)

You look so beautiful!

(Giggles) Thank you.

I knew you'd get good use out of that suit!

(Laughs)

Hi.
