new friendly faces ♪

just a train ride away ♪

all: ♪ Big world,

big, big adventures ♪

Big World! Big Adventures!" ♪

[laughter]

- Whoo-hoo!

[slo-mo whooshing]

Have you ever felt like

everybody was talking

about something

that you hadn't seen?

That happened

to Percy one time,

and he felt very left out...

at least at first!

[whistle toots]

All aboard for a big adventure!

♪ ♪

[Thomas narrating]

[whistle blows]

One day,

my friend Merlin came over

from the mainland

to deliver steel

to the docks.

- This is my first time

on the Island of Sonar.

My friend Thomas works here.

[chortles]

- Do you mean Sodor?

[whistle toots]

- Here comes

your friend Thomas now.

- Ooh! He doesn't know

that I'm here yet.

I'm going to make myself

invisible and surprise him.

- Invisible?

- How can a steam engine

make itself invisible?

- Is that who I think it is?

- Invisibility...on!

[mysterious music]

♪ ♪

- Huh?

- Did I hear

there was an invisible

engine around here?

Hmm, it sounds like

my old friend Merlin,

but I can't see him anywhere.

- Here I am, Thomas!

- [laughs] Merlin!

There you are.

Hello! [giggles]

- See what you can do

when you have three funnels?

- I don't get it, Thomas.

Merlin didn't really disappear.

- Merlin is an experimental

engine, Carly.

He was given three funnels

to make him hard to see.

When he shuts his eyes

and says he's invisible,

he thinks nobody can see him.

[horn honks]

- Arr!

Careful, Rebeccarr.

There's an invisible engine

in the yard today. [snickers]

- Wow!

Is there really?

An invisible engine?

Where?

Huh?

Whoop--whoopsy!

- Sorry about that.

You probably didn't see me.

I get that a lot.

You see, I'm very good

at hiding.

As a matter of fact,

I'm the best hider ever.

[giggles] Invisibility on!

[epic music]

♪ ♪

- [gasps] That was incredible!

- [giggles]

[quirky music]

- He's never really invisible,

is he?

- No.

He thinks nobody can see him.

But we know it's only pretend.

[pleasant music]

[mysterious music]

[whistle blows]

- Hello again, Thomas.

- [gasps, laughs]

- Had any big

adventures lately?

I've--

[whistle blows loudly]

- Huh?

♪ ♪

- Hello, Thomas!

- [gasps]

How did you get off the tracks?

Have you been derailed?

- Nope.

I don't need rails.

I'm a traction engine.

What do you think

of my new steam whistle?

[whistle blows,

squirrel chitters]

- It makes you sound

like a big railway engine!

- How fantastic.

I'm an experimental engine.

Want to see what I can do?

Invisibility on!

♪ ♪

- [giggles]

This is Merlin, Trevor,

my friend from the mainland.

- And I'm the best hider ever.

- Oh, hello, Merlin.

Very nice to "see" you.

[chuckles]

- And then he puffed out

a big cloud of steam.

- He kept saying

he was the best hider ever.

- Really?

Did he disappear?

- [laughs]

[as Merlin]

Invisibility...on!

- Did you see the disappearing

engine too, James?

- Everybody saw the

disappearing engine, Rebecca.

- Apart from me.

How come I didn't see

the invisible engine?

- Probably because

he's invisible, eh? [giggles]

- But I want to see

the disappearing engine too.

- Oh, and I want

you all to disappear

so I can get some sleep.

[laughter]

- Don't worry, Percy.

Merlin's going to be working on

Sodor all day tomorrow.

I'm sure you'll see him.

- Or not.

[laughter]

- [chuckles] Be quiet!

[clears throat]

All of you.

- Oh, Thomas.

I hope I do see him.

[shimmering music]

[pleasant music]

both: Hello, Percy!

- Hello, Clarabel!

Hello, Annie!

Huh?

Annie, Clarabel,

who's pulling you?

- Merlin is our engine today.

both: He's invisible!

- Hello, Percy!

- [gasps]

- I'm Merlin.

Thomas said you

were looking for me.

- Merlin's magic.

- And he's been teaching us

to do magic too!

both: Invisibility, on!

- Wow!

[whistle toots]

♪ ♪

[whistle toots]

- The next day,

as Percy worked

on the railway,

he looked everywhere

for the invisible engine.

- Hello?

Invisible engine?

Are you here?

Have you seen the invisible

engine today, Nia?

- Oh, Percy,

you just missed him.

Sorry.

[whistle toots]

- Hello?

[echoing] Hello?

[echo sounds]

[sighs] Hello, echo.

♪ ♪

[whistle blows]

[gasps] That didn't sound

like any engine I know,

but I definitely heard one.

It must be...it has to be!

[whistle blows]

[mysterious music]

Did you hear that too?

- Yes, I did.

It sounds like--

- Merlin the invisible engine!

[gasps] Wait until

I tell Thomas.

[whistle toots]

- Mm...but...

- Oh, hello, Merlin.

Nice to "see" you again.

[laughs]

- [laughs]

- So I heard his whistle

and I looked around

all the tracks,

but there was no engine

anywhere.

He really was completely

invisible.

- Are you sure, Percy?

- Are you making this up?

- I don't think Merlin can

really make himself

invisible, Percy.

I think it's only pretend.

- Well, it's not pretend.

I saw it with my own eyes.

[gasps] Another engine

came along,

and he heard his whistle too,

so I know I'm not imagining it.

- Percy believed he had

seen the invisible engine,

and that made him very happy.

[bell tolls]

[engine chugging]

[whistle toots]

Have you ever played a game

where you pretend something

is real when it isn't?

I like to use

my imagination to pretend.

But sometimes, it's hard

to know what is really true.

One time, I imagined

I had wings like an airplane

so I could fly.

But it was only pretend.

I didn't really have wings.

Merlin thinks that he can

make himself disappear.

But he can't really

make himself invisible.

It's only pretend.

Sometimes, it's important

to know what's real

and what's pretend.

But playing make-believe games

can still be fun.

[whistle blows]

- Come on, Thomas!

- It's time to go.

- See you next time!

[whistle toots]

♪ ♪

[gentle woodwind music]

♪ ♪

Children singing:

[whistle blasts]

[whistle toots]

[upbeat music]

man: ♪ Let's go, go, go ♪
