Christmas is
my favorite time of year,
but one year,
it was so different,
it almost didn't feel
like Christmas at all.

It was Christmas Eve
and I was working in Australia
pulling passenger coaches.
- Ho, ho, ho.

Bet you're excited about your
first Christmas in Australia.
- Oh, yes.
I hope it snows.
I love seeing children
wrapped up warm
in knitted hats and scarves
playing in the snowy fields...
[gasps] Filled with
the joy and excitement
of presents
on Christmas morning.
- Well, you're in
for a big surprise, mate.
[laughs]
- [yawning]
Great.
I love surprises, Shane.
Especially Christmas-y ones.

It was my first Christmas
without snow,
and I was very disappointed.

But then a new friend
helped cheer me up.

Look what Santa gave me.
His name is Hoppy.

- [giggles]
He's very cute.

It's a real-life Hoppy.
Only he's a lot bigger.
- She's a girl kangaroo,
Thomas.

She's got a pouch for a baby.
- Oh, yeah.
Sorry, madam.

She took Hoppy!
- [gasps]

- Don't worry, Madeleine,
I'll get Hoppy back.

- Go, Thomas, go!
- Stop that kangaroo!
[exciting music]

It's the kangaroo.
That's odd.
She seems smaller
than she was before.
- That's not the mom kangaroo,
Thomas.
It's a joey.
- How do you know
his name's Joey?
- [giggles]
No, Thomas.
A baby kangaroo
is called a joey.
- Oh.
Oh, he's all alone
on Christmas Day.
Where's your mom,
little joey.
- I think we've seen his mum,
Thomas.
- Oh, the kangaroo
we've been chasing.
- Maybe she thought Hoppy
was her lost joey.
- Now we really must find
that kangaroo.
Come on, little fella,
we'll find your mom.
[whistle toots]

- There she is!

- No, that's just a cactus.
Oh, but there she is!
- Nope, that's a termite mound.
- Ooh, what's that?
[groans]
My mistake.
- Nothing is going right today.
[sighs]
How can we possibly find her?
She could be anywhere.
[plane engine rumbles]
- G'day, Thomas!
- [gasps]
- Isla!
- You're not lost again,
are you?
- [laughs] No, but we found
a little joey who is.
He can't find his mom.
Can you help?
She's got a fluffy toy
in her pouch.
- Okay, Thomas, I'm on it.
[dramatic music]

- Hello, roos.
Any of you got a fluffy toy
in your pouch?
[gasps]
There she is.
Now I just have
to lead you back to Thomas.
Yeah, that's it.

Isla found her!

Almost there.
- Mother kangaroo,
I've got your baby.
Look!
Oh, no, she doesn't understand.

It worked.

- She did it!
- Hoppy Christmas.

- As I saw Madeleine reunited,
I realize Christmas
isn't really about snow
or sleds
or presents under the tree.
It's about something
much more important.

Christmas doesn't always
work out the way you imagine.
[whimsical flourish]
Once, Daisy's Christmas
was almost ruined
because nothing went the way
that she expected it to.
But her friends
helped cheer her up.
And one Christmas Eve,
the snow nearly stopped Connor
from taking his passengers
home to their families.
So the other engines
helped him.
I was very disappointed
that there was no snow
in Australia at Christmas.
But I realized in the end,
that the most important thing
about Christmas
is spending time
with those you love.
[steam hisses]
So no matter what happens
this Christmas,
I hope you get to spend it
with your loved ones--
whether it's your family
or your engine friends
or your baby kangaroo.
