[narrator] "Thomas the Quarry Engine."

At the very end of Thomas' branch line

lies the Farquhar Quarry,

one of the oldest quarries on the Island of Sodor.

Mavis is the diesel engine who works there,

shunting Troublesome Trucks of heavy stone.

Get in line and get ready.

You're all heading offto the docks this afternoon!

[trucks] Oof! Ohh, ow, Ow!

It's not an easy job,

but Mavis knows how to keep the Troublesome Trucks in line.

One day, there was a big order of stone to be taken

from the quarry to Brendam Docks.

Thomas and Diesel had been sent to collect it.

But they couldn't agree which of them would be the back engine.

It would be better for youto be my back engine, Diesel.

After all it is my branch line.

Nonsense, Thomas! You should be my back engine!

Having a dieselon your Branch Lineis bound to improve it.

Oof!

[Thomas whistling]

I could pull the carsby myself.

[Diesel]Don't make me laugh!

Those Troublesome Trucksare much too heavyfor one engine.

Especially a Steamie like you!

You two should stop arguing.

You don't knowhow lucky you are!

I work here in the quarryall the time.

At least you get to seethe rest of Sodor

and the seaside!

Would you like to bemy back engine, Mavis?

Oh, no, Thomas. I havetoo much work to do here.

There are more carsto get ready and--

I'm sure, Dieselcan look after things hereuntil you get back.

That does sound nice,if Diesel agrees.

In fact, it's a lovely idea!

[Diesel] Well,I've got a better one!

You can be my front engine,Mavis!

Diesels are newand revolutionary,

we'd be two dieselsworking together!

Well, I suppose...

Please, Thomas! Can you look after things hereuntil I get back?

Ta-ta, Thomas! See you later!

There are more carsto get ready. They needto go to the docks by :.

But you'll have to mind them. They can be very troublesome!

[sighs] I do know how to lookafter Troublesome Trucks,Mavis.

Thomas set to work, taking empty cars to be filled with stone

and shunting full cars into line.

But the trucks were very troublesome.

They didn't like to be pushed.

[cars] Ooh! Stop that!

And they didn't like to be pulled.

-No! Stop!-Leave us alone!

Thomas began to get a little impatient.

He was ready for Mavis and Diesel to come back.

[sighs]

Oh! I do loveto be beside the seaside!

Arr! You're an engine afterme own heart, Mavis! [laughs]

Thanks for letting me workwith you, Diesel.

But we reallydo have to get back.

What's the rush?We could doanother job together.

These goods cars need to goto the Shunting Yard. Come on!

Ah-ha! Here they are at last!

[bell rings]

You're not Mavis and Diesel!

I never said we were, did I?

I would have noticedif you had!

But these Troublesome Trucksneed to get to the docks!

And I need a back engineto take them.

Would you like to workwith me, Toby?

You could bemy back engine!

That's too many troublesometrucks for me, Thomas.

And besides I have to takethe quarry workers homefor their supper.

[bell rings]

Just be patient, Thomas!I'm sure Mavis and Dieselwill be back very soon.

Mavis and Diesel had delivered the freight cars to the Shunting Yard.

Now Mavis was ready to get back to the quarry.

I've had a great time Diesel,

but I really do need to getback now.

But there are more cars herethat need to be takento Vicarstown, Mavis!

We make a good team you and me!

You'd get to seethe Vicarstown Bridge!

Thomas was still waiting

and was getting very impatient.

Sir Topham Hattwill be very crossif these Troublesome Trucks

don't get to the docks on time!

But he would be very happyif I took them myself!

That's it! I'll showthat "revolutionary" Diesel

I don't need a back engineafter all!

The Troublesome Trucks thought that was a great idea!

Yes, Thomas! [laughing]Do it! We won't pushand we won't hold back.

We'll be on our very bestbehavior! [laugh]

The trucks were heavy and hard to pull without a back engine,

but once they were rolling they went very well.

Until they reached the first hill!

Hold back! Hold back![laugh]

Without a back engine to push from behind

it was very hard to pull the heavy cars up the hill.

Oh! You said, you were going to be good!

[laugh] Sorry, Thomas!We forgot.

We won't hold you backany more! [laugh]

What? No! Wait!

On! On! [laughing]Faster! Faster!

Without a back engine to hold back from behind,

it was very hard to slow down.

And Thomas's brake van wasn't strong enough to stop the heavy cars

[cars laughing] Faster!

Oh, no! Toby, look out!

Luckily, a signalman switched him onto a siding.

[laughing and giggling] Ooh!

Thomas! What happened?

You were taking so long.I decided not to wait

and take the Troublesome Trucksby myself.

Without a back engine?

Not a good idea. I know.

Sorry, Thomas. I did tell Mavisa number of times

that we should get backto the quarry.

What? You never said--Oh!

[man clears throat]

Mavis and Diesel helped to get Thomas

and the Troublesome Trucks back on the line.

I know naughty Dieseland Mavis left youall on your own, Thomas,

but you should neverhave taken those carswithout a back engine.

I'm sorry, sir.I was trying to be useful.

Sir Topham Hatt sent Mavis back to the quarry...

[engines whistle toots]

...to do what she does best.

But he also realized that now and then

it was nice for her to take cars down to the docks.

And that makes Mavis a very happy engine, indeed!
