[narrator] Toad's Bright Idea.

Brendam Docks is one of the busiest places

on the Island of Sodor,

but there was one engine at the docks

with nothing to do.

Gator was going to work in a land far away,

but his ship was delayed.

I'm not just a container,you know, Salty!

I'm an engine.I like to be busy.

But you must be at the ready,

were your ship to come in!

[laughs] Argh!

Just because I don'tlook like other engines,

that's no reason not to give mesomething useful to do.

Nobody is worriedabout the way that you look!

Oh, no?

Remember what happenedwhen I first arrived?

Everyone thoughtI was a monster!

But the engineshadn't seen you before.

They were just a bit...surprised.

By your appearance.

[chuckles]

Gator was still waiting for his ship,

when the Dock Manager came by.

Oliver was due to bringsome cars here for shipping,

but he's broken downon Duck's Branch Line.

Do you thinkyou can collect the cars

and be back by first light?

No problem, sir!

Great!

But don't forget--

Back before first light!I know.

[train whistle toots]

Gator was so excited to be busy

and really useful...

[train whistle toots]

That he didn't even notice

when his lamp went out!

Whoa!

Who are you?

I'm Gator.And there's no need to shout.

I'm not a monster!

I know that!

I just couldn't see you coming.

Where's your light?

Where's my what?

Oh. My lamp.

It... it must have gone out.

I didn't realize.

Sorry, Oliver.

His driver lit his lamp again.

And Gator went to turn around on the loop

to collect the cars.

Good evening, Mr. Gator, sir!

My name's Toad!

And I'll be your brake vanthis evening.

Very nice to meet you,Toad.

[train whistle toots]

Goodbye, Oliver.

See you later, Gator!

In a while, um...

Toad!

Bye, Mr. Oliver!

We'll deliver your cars,we will!

Don't worry.

Gator and Toad had hardly gone very far

when Gator's lamp went out again.

Oh, no...

What is it, Mr. Gator?

Is everything all right?

Everything is fine, Toad.

It's just my lamp.

It's gone out again.

Your lamp's gone out?

Then you must stopand relight it!

It's dangerous to cross

the island at nightwithout a light.

Yes! I know...

But I think there's somethingwrong with that lamp.

It won't stay lit.

Gator stopped near a junction

to light his lamp again.

While he was waiting,

James came along with the Flying Kipper.

[Gator] Hello!

[screams]

Not again. [sighs]

Now we're making progress,Mr. Gator!

We'll soon be at the docks!

-[train whistle toots]-[Percy] Gator!

Where's your lamp?!

Mr. Gator?

Is your lamp out again?

Yes! I mean, no!

Oh, okay, yes.

But it doesn't matter!

I'm sorry to contradict you,Mr. Gator,

but it does matter.

You need to stop--

I can't keep stopping!

I have to get back to the docksbefore morning!

Really, sir!

I must insist that you stopand light your lamp!

Mr. Gator! Please!

We are approaching a junction!

This is where the carscome on from the gravel pits!

There may be gravelon the tracks.

Slow down!

Right! That's it!

[brakes screech]

Mr. Gator! If you don't stop,

then you'll give mea wheel flat!

[Toad sighs] Thank goodness.

You've seen the light at last.

Now, I'm not going any further

unless you relight your lamp!

Fine!Then I'll go without you!

What?

It's dangerous to go withouta brake van, you know?

-I know!-[train whistle toots]

But it might be quicker...and quieter, too!

Gator left Toad behind

and hurried on towards the junction...

Then there was trouble!

Uh-oh! Gravel!

[crunching]

Toad was still fuming

when he heard something coming back along the tracks.

Hello? Who's that?

Be careful!

Brake van on the line!

Sorry, Toad.

You were right all along...

about everything.

I was only doing my job,Mr. Gator.

I just wanted to bereally useful.

And so did I!

When engines go too fastto be safe,

it's my job to slow them down.

Especially whenthey don't have a lamp.

Especially then!

I can't get my lamp lit,

so it looks likewe're going to be

stuck here until morning.

[Gator sighs]

Perhaps I'm not a veryuseful engine after all.

And that's when Toad had a very bright idea!

Mr. Gator!

I've got two lamps.

Go on.

How about I lend youone of my lamps

so you can see the way

and show other enginesyou're approaching!

So that's just what they did.

The driver changed the lens from red to white.

And Gator pulled Oliver's cars

all the way to the docks...

without any further trouble.

[train whistle toots]

Well done, Gator!

You're just in time!

You had me worried therefor a while.

I had a little troublewith my lamp, sir.

It looks fine to me, Gator.

That's not my lamp, sir,

it belongs to Toad.

He suggested I borrow it,as mine wasn't working.

Is that so?

Well done, Toad!

[train whistle toots]

I'll be sad to see you go,

when your ship comes in,Mr. Gator.

Oh, it won't befor a while yet, Toad.

I'm sorry for getting cross.

I was fed up with people beingsurprised by my appearance

and mistaking mefor a monster.

You know, Toad,

you're the only one I've meton the whole island

who wasn't scaredwhen they first saw me!

Actually...[chuckles]

I was a bit startledwhen I first saw you, Mr. Gator.

But very little reallyscares me, sir.

-[ship horn blares]-Ooh!

[laughs]

[both laugh]

[laughter continues]

[closing music plays]
