[male narrator] "A Cranky Christmas."

It was a cold and frosty morning

on the island of Sodor,

and all the engines were busy getting ready for Christmas.

Thomas was delivering salt to Tidmouth Town Hall

to stop people slipping on the pavement.

[Thomas] Whoa!

[train engine chugging]

[wheels grinding]

Careful, Thomas!

[brakes squealing]

[steam hissing]

Bust my buffers!

This ice is really slippery.

I know, but that'’s what the sand in your sandbox is for.

It helps you grip the rails.

[laughing] I know, Edward!

That'’s why I'’m getting my sandbox filled up.

[Sir Topham Hatt] Hey, ooh!

Whoa!

[yelping]

Ooh!

Ah, splendid.

You have the salt for the walkways.

We could use some back there. [chuckles]

Looks like Sir Topham Hatt could use a sandbox, too.

[both laugh]

Ah, Thomas.

Thank you... Oh!

Thank you for delivering the salt.

[chuckles] Good.

But I have another even more important job for you.

What is it, sir?

There'’s a special delivery

arriving at the docks.

A Christmas crate with red straps

that needs to be delivered here to the Town Hall.

It'’s going to kick off

our Christmas celebrations in style.

Hurry, Thomas!

And careful how you go... whoa!

Don'’t worry, sir!

[whistle toots]

My sandbox is full.

[narrator] Meanwhile, at the docks,

Cranky was busy unloading crates.

Lift and load. Lift and load.

I don'’t know.

All this extra cargo at Christmas.

Ah, what'’s this?

[whistle blowing]

Ah!

[gasps]

Oh, no. That doesn'’t sound right.

I must have broken it.

[narrator] So while no one was watching,

Cranky hid the broken crate from view.

[whistle toots]

Morning, Cranky!

I have an important delivery to pick up.

Oh, uh, hello, Thomas!

What is it?

A Christmas crate

with big red straps around it.

Have you seen it?

Uh... [mumbles] Let me think.

I'’ve unloaded so many crates today, you see.

[narrator] Cranky was too scared

to tell Thomas that he had dropped the crate.

[Thomas] It must be around here somewhere.

I think I'’d remember if I'’d seen one like that, Thomas.

[chuckles] [clears throat]

[sighs]

But what am I going to tell Sir Topham Hatt?

Oh, cinders and ashes.

[whistle toots]

Uh-oh.

[narrator] Thomas was so busy worrying

about what to say to Sir Topham Hatt

that he forgot to mind his speed on the icy rails.

Wah! Whoa!

[narrator] But then, he remembered to use his sandbox.

[sand pattering]

That'’s better.

[train engine chugging]

[whistle toots]

Here he is!

I told you he'’d be here soon!

[train engine chugging]

-There he is! -Yay!

But where'’s the crate I sent you to collect, Thomas?

I looked for it everywhere, sir.

But Cranky said no Christmas crate has arrived.

Oh...

Now then, where'’s this big Christmas surprise

you'’ve been promising us?

Oh, uh, yes, well, Mr. Mayor, um...

It seems there'’s been a, uh...

[stutters] A delay with that.

[all gasp]

[Sir Topham Hatt] Yes, well, uh, um, uh--

Don'’t worry, sir! I'’ll find it!

I'’ll search the docks from top to bottom if I have to.

[whistle toots]

[child] Yay!

- [laughing] - [train engine chugging]

Thomas, you haven'’t refilled your sandbox!

[Edward] Thomas!

[narrator] Thomas was in such a rush to get back to the docks,

he didn'’t hear Edward.

Whoa!

[brakes grinding]

[train engine chugging]

[narrator] And his sand was running out.

[narrator] Thomas searched and searched for the Christmas crate,

but every time he got close,

Cranky moved more crates to hide it.

[Salty humming]

[train engine chugging]

Oh!

Ahoy, matey!

Is this the crate you'’re looking for?

Huh?

[train engine chugging]

[Thomas] Well done, Salty!

You found it!

Yes, well done, Salty.

[sighs]

[narrator] Thomas steamed back to Tidmouth

with the Christmas crate as fast as he could.

Whoa!

[brakes squealing]

Oh, no!

I forgot to fill my sandbox.

[Sir Topham Hatt] Ah, here comes Thomas now!

Is he meant to be going that fast?

I can'’t stop! I can'’t stop!

Help!

Oh, no! He'’s out of sand!

[grunts]

[train engine chugging]

Brake, Thomas!

Brake!

[brakes squealing]

[crashing]

[in slow-motion] No!

[crate crashes]

[glass shatters]

[crowd gasps]

Oh, no!

It sounds like I'’ve broken the Christmas surprise!

I'’m sorry, sir.

[Sir Topham Hatt] Don'’t worry, Thomas.

[narrator] Inside the crate was everything that was needed

to set up an ice rink in front of the town hall.

Nothing'’s broken! Look!

[laughs]

[gasps]

[Sir Topham Hatt laughs]

[child] Yay!

[laughing] Yay!

[children laughing]

Oh!

What do you think of my special Christmas surprise, Thomas?

I like it, sir.

Maybe ice can be fun after all.

Thanks for your help, Thomas.

You'’re a really useful engine! [chuckles]

Merry Christmas, Mr. Mayor... Oh! Whoa!

[Sir Topham Hatt groans]

I still think he needs his own sandbox

to stop him from slipping.

[both laughing]

Oh! [chuckles]

[laughing]

So when the crate fell off my flatbed,

I thought what was inside had broken,

but it turned out,

it was just all the ice skates rattling about.

[all laughing]

That'’s what I thought when I dropped it.

[laughing stops]

When you dropped it?

No, no, no.

Uh... yeah.

Why do you think I kept hiding it?

You were hiding it?

Yeah, okay.

I'’m sorry, very sorry.

But can'’t we just let it go?

After all, it is Christmas.

[laughs] Cranky'’s right!
