[male narrator] "Den and Dart."

It was a busy day at the Ffarquhar Quarry.

Mavis was shunting troublesome trucks

to be filled with heavy stone.

Ow! Mavis, stop!

Ow! Mavis!

Ow... oh... stop!

Stop, Mavis!

Oh, Mavis, stop.

Stop complaining and hold still.

[whistle toots]

[Thomas] Hello, Mavis.

[Mavis] Ah, Thomas.

Empty cars, that'’s just what...

[yelps] Oh!

-[rocks thud] -Ow!

[groans] [coughs]

[narrator] Thomas had to take Mavis

to be fixed at the diesel works.

But who'’s going to help at the quarry?

And keep the troublesome trucks in line?

I don'’t know, Mavis.

I'’m sure Sir Topham Hatt will find someone.

[men shouting indistinctly]

[metal clinking]

[sizzling]

[bell ringing]

[narrator] Den and Dart work together at the Vicarstown diesel works.

Den is a big hydraulic diesel engine.

And Dart is a small diesel shunter.

[whistles blowing]

Den and Dart are a great team

and the very best of friends.

[whistle toots]

'’Ello, Thomas!

'’Ello, Mavis!

Mavis had a little accident and needs some repairs.

Make sure you look after her, Dart.

She'’s a bit nervous.

[whistle toots]

[Mavis] I wouldn'’t say nervous.

I'’m just keen to get back to work is all.

Oh, sorry, Mavis.

I... I didn'’t realize you were in a rush.

It'’s just, um--

What he means is, we'’ll get you back on the rails

just as soon as we can.

[all chuckle]

[Topham Hatt] And until then, I'’ll need an engine

to take Mavis'’ place at the quarry.

Den?

[stammers] Me, sir?

But, um... not by myself.

What he means is, we'’re a team, sir.

We work together.

Oh, stop, stop, stop.

Mavis may be really useful, but it doesn'’t take two engines to replace her.

Besides, Dart, you'’re needed here.

Otherwise, who will help with repairing Mavis?

Make sure you keep those trucks in line, Den.

They'’re not called "troublesome" for nothing, you know.

[gulps]

[whistle blows]

[groans]

Don'’t worry, Den.

You'’ll be all right!

[trucks cackling]

Um, hello.

Uh, right then, um...

I'’d better, um... get to work.

[chuckles] Yes. And, uh... get you lot in line.

Oh! Who does he think he is?

Telling us what to do.

And what not to do!

[grunts]

[narrator] Poor Den didn'’t know

the troublesome truck had its brakes on.

It made it very hard to pull.

[trucks cackling]

[narrator] But not all the trucks had their brakes on.

Ow!

Oh, what I mean is...

[trucks cackling]

Dart! Dart!

Where are you?

The engineers need their parts.

Sorry, Mavis.

I just don'’t feel my usual self today.

Maybe you'’re missing your best friend, Den.

Oh?

Of course you are.

But just think, the sooner I'’m repaired

and get back to the quarry,

the sooner Den can come back to work with you.

[gasps] You'’re right, Mavis.

[horn blares] Back in a tick with those parts!

[cackling]

[Toby] You'’ve got to be firmer with those trucks, Den.

Take a stand. Show them who'’s boss.

Um, is that how Mavis does it?

Oh, yes.

She can be quite determined, you know.

[Henrietta] Come on, Den.

You'’re a big diesel engine. Be brave.

Take a deep breath, Den. You can do this.

[inhales] Right.

I'’m going in.

[groans]

Are you all right, Den?

Yes, I'’m fine.

But I'’m very cross with this truck.

Fancy letting your brakes slip off like that.

Sorry, Den.

[Dart] That'’s it, Mavis.

You'’re all clear.

Ready to go, good as new.

Thank you, Dart!

I can'’t wait to get back to the quarry.

[laughs]

Well, go on, then!

The sooner you go, the sooner Den will be back here.

[laughing]

[narrator] Mavis was very happy

to be heading back to the quarry.

I'’m back!

What'’s happening?

What do I need to...

[Den] Oh, hello, Mavis.

Everything'’s under control.

Oh. Oh, yes. So it is.

Uh, does this mean, um...

Is it okay if, uh... Because I'’m...

What you mean is, you'’d like to go back

to the diesel works now.

Yes, please.

[whistle blows]

Thanks, Den. You did a good job here.

[whistle blows]

[Toby] Yes!

A good job, indeed. [chuckles]

Den! How was it?

Oh, Dart, it was amazing. [chuckles]

Well, uh, not at first.

Um, but, later, uh--

What you mean is, you had a nice time,

but you'’re glad to be back.

That'’s right, Dart. I am.

were able to work on their own, they were happiest
