(Spenser) It was a terrific night to be out

if you happen to be a duck or maybe Gene Kelly.

A sane person would have had enough sense to come in

out of a rain like this.

But some people, you like enough

to do things that really don't make sense.

Joey Falocci whom I hadn't seen in five years

was one of those guys.

Hey!

Spenser.

Hey, Joey! How you been doing?

- I've been better. - You're looking great.

You b*at the perp and you got most of your hair, huh?

I knew I could count on you.

World's changing so fast

nothing's good like it used to be except you.

You would have changed than, than nothing good would be left.

- What do we gotta do? - Give some money to a guy.

- He want you or the money. - The money!

Hey, I walk in, give him the money

then you and me go get a plate of clams at Dom's

like old times.

Joey, it's nothing's that easy--

I can't tell you anymore.

We never used to have secrets.

Okay, look, I'm on the ropes.

The cops find out about this

I'm down for the count.

The less you know about it the better for both of us.

Trust me.

Okay, no questions.

Uh, let's get this over with, huh?

How's the leg?

It's okay, except on nights like this it acts up, you know.

Yeah. Unh, I don't like this.

Unh-unh.

Street light's at our back.

They could see us coming in, we can't see them.

I gotta go in, Spenser.

- I'll be okay. - No, no, no, no.

You're not gonna leave me out here in the rain

and go on to that nice, dry warehouse by yourself.

Come on.

[intense music]

[g*nshots]

[music continues]

Joey?

Joey!

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chatter]

[sighs] Now tell me again why you sh*t him?

He was sh**ting at me.

Why would he wanna do that?

I don't have the foggiest idea, Frank.

What are you doing down here, Spenser?

Just taking a walk.

It was Hurricane Zelda out there an hour ago.

Oh, the majesty in glory of nature.

Okay, cut it, will you, Spenser?

The last thing I need to hear right now

is another quote from some dead poet.

You're working, aren't ya?

What exactly do you mean by working?

What do you think I mean?

I wasn't working.

You look very nice by the way.

Yeah, I ought to look good, Spenser.

I was at the policeman's ball.

I was dancing with a beautiful woman.

And then I get a call to come down here

in the middle of the night in a storm

and look at some dead yahoo in a warehouse.

The only thing that can possibly make it better

is when the guy who plugs him starts playing games with me.

That way I get to drag my butt back to the station

and tell my happy-go-lucky lieutenant

that I got a stiff, only it's alright

because the guy who sh**t him said it's-it's okay!

He-he was just walking out in a storm by a warehouse

somebody sh**t at him, he returns fire.

That's about how it went down.

Well, I think you're protecting a client, Spenser.

And I just hope he's worth the trouble you're in.

Am I in trouble?

You don't think of a better story, you are.

[instrumental music]

Let's go, everybody. Come on.

(Susan) 'So how did you and Joey meet?'

(Spenser) 'I was all of .'

Boxing here and there and one day

this guy comes into the gym..

He says he's a trainer.

And he's looking to train a champ.

And that he's been watching me and I'm that guy.

Was he good?

He was a natural, Suz.

Best trainer I ever saw.

He got to know things ...inside of me

that I-I never even knew myself.

We were just a couple of kids dreaming.

He wanted to be the next Angelo Dundee

and I was gonna be the world's champ.

But it didn't work out that way.

We worked together for fights.

All winners.

Trouble is...somebody else was watching me.

Those guys with funny noses, you know, the bent ones

in the shiny suits.

'They came to Joey one day, wanted to manage me.'

He knew what that meant, so, uh

he said no.

He didn't tell me about it because he knew

I'd go off halfcocked, do something stupid.

Maybe get myself k*lled.

So he found a place to hide me out.

Mob guys didn't like that. Unh-unh-unh.

So they broke Joey's leg.

Oh, God.

I didn't find out the whole story for - years.

Joey dropped me soon after that.

What happened to Joey?

Yeah, he kept at it.

Had a lot of bad luck.

He had a way of manufacturing that wherever he went.

But he taught me lessons that kept me alive in the ring.

Kept me alive outside the ring too.

Well, I have to like him for that at least.

[chuckles]

Joey said there were two kinds of people.

Bombs and champs. It didn't take any effort to be a b*mb.

But to be a champ a guy had to go the extra mile.

Be willing to pay the price.

It's sad he never got his dream.

No.

He didn't win any titles but..

But he made some people feel like champs.

[indistinct chatter]

Stop it, K.C. Ralph is gonna k*ll him.

Oh, Ralph has already hurt him, hasn't he, Mike?

[chuckles] Now he's gonna continue to hurt him

because this kid is your fighter, isn't he, Joey?

He'll pay for your mistakes.

I got Spenser where you told me to

that's all I was supposed to do.

Then how did he know, Joey?

Because he's good.

But he's not dead, is he?

And you still owe me $ , .

You would have had what you wanted

if them hit guys you picked were good at sh*ts.

Joey, you messed up.

But I'm gonna give you a chance to square it with me.

I'm going to provide you with an opportunity to go on living.

You k*ll Spenser.

Oh.

K.. D-don't make me do this.

It's not a request, Joey.

Get your people to do it.

They already tried that, Joey.

Now one's dead, and the other ran away.

It's like you said, Spenser is very good.

With you he won't suspect a thing, will he?

'May even drop his left'

'and then when he's least suspecting it'

you give it to him.

I'm not a k*ller, K.C.

Is that squeamish?

Did-did I just sense squeamish?

A half an hour ago you led one of your best friends

in an ambush and now you're squeamish?

That's not the same thing.

Well, then you get a priest in here

to explain the difference to me!

k*ll him, hotshot.

[intense music]

(Hawk) 'Spenser, I got a C-note'

'that says the black team's going to eat yellow alive.'

Australian rules football

you gotta be kidding, I can't even figure out

what they're trying to do.

Doesn't matter. That's the beauty of technology.

You got something on before the Celtics

and in-between the flights that come from the Forum in LA.

I got here. Get it on the yellow, man!

Oh, no, no. I'm not a betting man.

Yeah, except when it come to your life.

Yeah, there I live on the edge.

Flash! Don't go jogging with Spenser when he's on the street

could be deleterious to your health.

- You know who the sh**t is? - Was.

You've been blowing up college round ball players.

- What? - Yeah.

One of the best BC ever had

till he lost his scholarship.

Seems he was shaving points.

Tryin' to make a few betters happy.

College basketball player. I thought he was a pro.

He could sh**t the hoop now but he was definitely an amateur

when it came to sh**ting at people.

Tried to k*ll a friend of mine.

Because you're of the inquisitive variety

you want to find out who hired the boy sh**t.

Well, naturally, yeah.

I shall inquire.

I don't know, maybe I should have taken a piece of this

the guys dressed like bumblebees look like they're winning.

Greatness of Australian rules football

lies in the fact that it doesn't matter who wins

it matters who survives.

- Another of life's lessons. - Who told you, babe?

I still got a quarter end here.

- Covered. - Ra-ra!

Go black.

Go.

(Joey) 'Spenser!'

Hey, Joey, where did you disappear to?

Kidding? I run better than that bum you fought in Detroit.

- What was his name? - Uh, Lincoln.

Lincoln. That's the one.

The way he didn't wanna get hit they should have

named him Dodge.

I'm in trouble, Spense.

Remember Gus who shack up on the cape?

Yeah.

I could be safe there for a couple of--

Safe from who? Who's after you?

It's one of these big mix ups.

The whole thing will blow over in a couple of week.

I don't have a couple of weeks.

The cops are looking to put my butt on a ring or two.

You're not the only guy in trouble, you know.

Okay, Spense, 'cause we go way back, here's the deal.

There's a bookie everyone calls the Professor.

Mostly he handles the college action

but he'll cover just about any bet.

I get a hot tip on a horse running at Suffolk

the bum finishes so far back he's in another time zone.

- Joey. - I come up a little short.

And the Professor asked for his money and the rest is history.

How much, how much do you owe him?

- Not much at all. - How much?

, .

$ , you owe this guy!

- Joey, what are you doing? - What's grand these days?

With inflation and all that.. Look.

You and me stay holed up at Gus's till Sunday.

On Monday I got a hot tip on a horse running in Hollywood Park.

I pay the Professor what I owe him and all is forgiven.

This whole thing is what got you a grand in the hole.

We got no time for alternates here, trust me.

Sit in the car.

I appreciate it, Spense.

Before somebody sh**t us in the head.

[intense music]

(Spenser) I hated to break it to Joey but Gus's crummy old beach shack

had been torn down to make way for condos.

Fortunately crummy hideaways were my specialty.

One.. Come on, Joey.

Like the old times, make me keep going.

Do a couple of more.

Oh, come on, yell at me! Don't let me stop.

You ain't getting ready for a fight.

Well, the Professor might have different ideas.

[grunts]

Even a hard stomach won't do much good

against a b*llet.

Ah. Yeah. Well..

If you'd stayed on me, I could have done at least ten more.

Hey, remember that kid from the Brownman Gym, huh?

He wouldn't do a sit-up if you paid him a $ apiece for 'em.

I never had a fighter who hit with as much power

and the kid goes and gets himself k*lled in Vietnam.

I had a sure sh*t at training a champ

and he goes and volunteers.

Yeah he claimed a lot of clocks, mine included.

Yeah, in the beginning, but you learned, Spenser, you learned.

You taught me, Joey.

I taught a lot of people.

Only that much you ever learned, enough to become boxes.

Hey, what you say? You stage your comeback, huh?

You could, uh, you could train me, i could lose a few pounds

get in shape, fight as a light heavyweight

'maybe, uh, maybe middleweight.'

[scoffs] Middleweight. Come on.

Only thing you've got a sh*t at is middle aged.

Oh.

Hey, I'mma grab a shower

'and then maybe we go out find a place'

'that get some oysters, huh?'

'Could have been somebody, you know'

'could have been a contender.'

[intense music]

[water splashing]

[music continues]

[g*n cocks]

[music continues]

(Spenser) 'So I get out of the shower and he's gone. Vanished.'

(Hawk) 'Professor will know where to find him'

'like you Professor knows everything.'

'Like why the sky is blue? Why the grass grows?'

Where to find an ex-college athlete with a shotgun?

Not his style. Professor still entertains the notion

that the pen is mightier than the sword.

grand short will turn even a pacifist into Attila the Hun.

So where does this Professor meet his students?

- Library bay. - Of course, how stupid of me.

Were else would you find a bookie?

Vegas odds have Dartmouth and for, um..

I'll call you back.

[chuckles]

Well, Hawk...what would you like to discuss?

Joey Falocci.

I have very little good to say about Joey Falocci.

Yes, I know he owes you a great deal of money.

I will personally guarantee that he pays every cent back

but I gotta find him. Hawk thought you might--

If you find him, you let me know--

The sword will not get your money back.

It's not my money and the sword will belong to K.C.

in the form of a . magnum handgun that he is fond of.

Who is K.C.?

He's a gambler of, um, some note.

'The man from whom Joey stole $ , .'

Then why did you send a couple of mugs to muscle Joey?

Quoting another famous man, let me be perfectly clear

I did not send anyone to get anything

from Joey Falocci! He doesn't owe me money.

What he owes me is to inform K.C. that I was not

in collusion with him when he came to me and placed a bet

on a horse named Skybolt.

Joey said he placed a bet with you

and lost and couldn't cover it.

Then he lies as well as he steals!

I had known the man for years!

- Alright. - Spenser!

Just like you the Professor has dedicated his life

to the search for eternal truth.

Now you let the man speak.

'Alright, Joey is friend for K.C.'

K.C. bets heavily on collegiate sports.

He's very sophisticated as a gambler

'and more than a few other bettors watch his action.'

And so that the odds won't change too much

he uses friends to place his wages for him.

'Several days ago Joey was given'

' , of K.C.'s money to bet for him.'

Instead he laid it all on a to sh*t at Suffolk.

So he lost K.C.'s money because I was fool enough to take a bet

from the little weasel, K.C. thinks that

I'm in collusion with him.

This is just a little bit hard to believe.

Look, nobody believed that world was round

until Columbus showed them.

He opened their eyes.

[Hawk laughs]

Look, I don't care about Christopher Columbus.

I'm not buying it.

Head's always smarter than the heart. Listen to it.

Yesterday Joey was a good man and a help in your corner

today he is not.

No. No way.

Professor does not lie.

Even does Joey, at least not to me.

Look you know every gambler in Boston

you ever heard of a high roller named K.C.

No, you haven't. End of discussion.

Hey, look here. Joey cheated his boss.

He set Professor up, he's jerking you around like a yo-yo.

A man like that gets what he deserves.

Yeah, he's gonna get my help.

Wow, man, you're having difficulty

telling night from day which makes you

positively dangerous to be around. Bye!

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) Joey used to say that you can tell

how much you want something

by what you're willing to give up to get it.

And I'd lost Hawk and still didn't have Joey.

It was time to start checking his old haunts

starting with the bars.

[indistinct chatter on radio]

[instrumental music]

- What you got on draft? - Beer.

You talked me into it.

Joey Falocci around?

- You want a tip? - You got a tip for me?

Drink your beer, enjoy the atmosphere and take a walk.

Used to be a regular here.

Not while I'm behind the bar, he wasn't.

Maybe we're not talking about the same, guy's about this tall

and he's always wearing something plaid.

We're definitely talking about the same guy

and he's definitely not welcome.

You know where he might be welcome?

There was a kid from the neighborhood.

He was going all the way.

Had the heaviest hands you ever wanna see.

Take a punch.

Had a heart as big as Fenway Park.

Won the Golden Gloves, this kid did.

Won every time he stepped in the ring

till he started training with Joey Falocci.

And he lost one down in Brockton.

Some wino when the odds were -to- .

Always against guys who couldn't fight their way out of a cobweb.

Danny Riley lost to Lou Taylor.

A wimp. Joey set him up.

Gave to Danny some dr*gs or something

so he couldn't defend himself.

Joey set the kid up for the gamblers.

Danny got b*at up so bad he don't think right anymore.

Washes cars in Chelsea now.

Fight game, guys get hurt.

Joey was famous for giving tips.

Always had a tip on a horse or a boxer.

Now I'm gonna give you another tip.

Get out of here while you can still walk.

[intense music]

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) Joey and his wife Mildred had left Boston

for greener pastures to Florida six or seven years ago

when Joey's luck was down.

I heard of rumor that there had been trouble

between them and Mildred was back in town.

And I took a chance that she might know where to find him.

Mrs. Falocci?

No. Joanne Collins.

- I'm looking for Joey. - What do you want with him?

Can I help..

Just wanna talk to him.

You're gonna hurt him?

No. No, I'm not gonna hurt him.

As a matter of fact, I'm gonna try to keep him

from getting hurt.

Mrs. Falocci, maybe you don't remember me.

Joey used to be my trainer. I-I need to find him.

Uh, he's in big trouble.

I got some fresh coffee on.

You're wanna tell me you're gonna break

the little weasel's legs or work him over

I'd invite you in for a cup.

Maybe we could talk about where to find him

You wanna help him, ha! You're no your own.

Has he been here?

No, Joey hasn't been here.

The only things left to pawn

are my kitchen sink and a cookie jar.

So, no, Joey hasn't been around.

Well, if he does come in, you tell him I was here.

The name is Spenser.

- Spenser? - Yeah, with an S.

Ah, he trained a guy named Spenser

when he first started.

All he said he had a pretty fair right hook.

Yeah, that's me.

How much you lend him?

I didn't lend him any money.

Ah, you're lucky.

I think he's into every guy in the eastern seaboard.

Yeah, he's in a lot of trouble, alright.

It's gotta be money.

, .

Oh, don't tell me the horse hasn't finished the race yet.

The odds were to .

Oh, now isn't that just like Joey.

The last ten years, looking to hit the long sh*t

the big score, even doing deals with gamblers.

- Do you know which ones? - No.

He was the best in the business.

I guess I don't need to tell you that.

Yeah. He had lot of skill just didn't have any luck.

Man like him deserves some luck.

Gambling became a sickness with him.

He isn't bad. Joey isn't.

He's a jerk but... he's not all bad.

You find him, you tell him..

Tell him what?

Forget it.

Mike, you sure it was him?

Oh, it was Spenser alright.

Alright.

Ralph go find Joey.

[whistles] I want him alive.

- How alive? - 'Breathing, Ralph, breathing.'

(K.C.) 'Mike, time for new game plan.'

Yeah, give me Sammy White in Providence, will you?

You don't need White.

- He's very good. - I'll take Spenser.

[chuckles] You?

What are you giving me that look for? I can do it, K.C.

You just give me the chance.

Because you're a a basketball player, Mike.

- Just like your dead friend. - No.

I was a basketball player

until Spenser.

You want him that bad, huh, Mike?

As much as you.

Maybe more.

Mike, you didn't do time because of Spenser.

Look...before you went to jail you were a gambler.

And you're still a gambler.

I'll never be able to play ball

at the level I was meant to play.

I'll never play at the garden, the best I can do is

play in lousy school yard pick-up games.

Mike, Mike, Mike.

The ball is now in your court.

[intense music]

[laughs]

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) One of the old gyms where Joe used to train

was boarded up.

The other one had been perfumed out

and the old wooden floor is carpeted.

So no self-respecting boxer would be caught dead inside.

News from the marathon, Joey Falocci's

races run, I'll see to it.

words or less.

Why do you hate Joey Falocci?

The man kills more people than the plague.

The Professor is dead.

- How? - Beaten to death.

I'm gonna put him away, Spenser

before he gets some more good citizens k*lled.

What?

Boys were working for a name

that keeps coming up. K.C.

Well, that name has a longer version.

- Kevin Clooney. - Yeah, Clooney.

Hurts. You're smelling the coffee now, babe.

You remembering how you sent Kevin Clooney upstream.

Yeah, down the to Walpole.

He ain't making fences.

He's doing to .

Till the parole board met

Kevin Clooney did two years

spend his time thinking about how's he's going

get even with you when they open the gates.

Well, just keep an eye out, alright?

No, no, no, no!

You will look at danger

when you're in a dark alley

where it's right next to you.

Joey set you up!

You're not making any sense to me.

Straight from the mountain top, babe.

Joey lost , of K.C.'s hard earned dollars.

Joey couldn't pay back two nickles of it.

K.C. knew that you and Joey were tight.

Joey had to pay you or the marker.

Joey set you up.

Professor is dead, I'm welling up with civic duty, Spenser.

I'm gonna make the world safer from Joey Falocci.

[intense music]

I looked but I didn't see.

I listened but it didn't make any sense to me.

All those things, the Professor, bartender, Joey's wife

told me about 'em

just didn't make any sense.

I chose to dismiss, had excuses for him.

You wanted to believe.

He set me up.

Well, it must be like Hawk said.

[sighs] It's either your life or his. Fear would make him do that.

Joey told me... there 'll always be a..

...a fight w*r will come up against the fighter so big

so strong, so fast..

...I'd be scared down to my toes.

And you got two choices.

You fight in the best fight you know how

you-you give it your all, maybe die trying

and if you survive

you're a better fighter for it

or you, uh...back off.

You take it easy. Slip the punches.

You're never gonna win.

You're not gonna get hurt too bad either

but if you do that

you're no good as a fighter ever again.

Doesn't have to be a championship fight

but it's the kind of fight that makes champs.

Joey called it the big fight.

Well, it sounds like he met that one man who made him back off.

Joey. Joey Falocci.

Look, let me get this straight.

This guy is a friend of yours

and he set you up?

Where do I find him?

If I knew that, I..

The guy found a hole, crawled in

and pulled a rock over top of it.

Look, Spenser, he's an accomplish

in an attempted m*rder. You can't go on protecting him--

I wouldn't protect him on a promise to my mother

on her deathbed, Frank. You listen to what I'm saying?

Alright, alright, alright. Look. You mean Clooney is hiding him?

Why don't you ask him?

If I wanted to ask him where would I find him?

I would start with the parole department.

I already did.

I got his file right here, but he doesn't seem like

the kind of guy that will come down for you.

- Where's he at? - He's an upper class kid.

Uh, pre-law, an honorable student.

What he did wasn't terribly honorable, you know?

He corrupted an entire basketball team.

They were shaving points, even throwing games.

Yeah, I read in the file that you were the guy

that got the recording of him offering that bribe

to Mike Walsh. It was too bad.

Walsh was the only one of those kids

that was gonna make it to the pros.

Could have said no.

Where do I find them?

Reading Street.

But you can save your time, Spenser.

The blue's checked it.

'It's a b*rned out building.'

Seems like K.C. and your friend Joey have

one thing in common, they're both hard to find.

I'll find one of them sooner or later.

Yeah, when you do watch your back.

Goonies gonna keep coming at you with or without Joey.

- If you need me I'm here. - Thanks.

That's the job, Spenser, protect and serve.

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chatter on PA]

- Time to go home. - Ralphie, no, please.

You can't keep running off, hotshot.

Mister, help me, this guy's gonna k*ll me.

Mind isn't what it used to be, ever since 'Nam.

Help me!

[instrumental music]

[g*nshots]

(Spenser) With a basketball Mike Walsh was the best pure sh**t

I had ever seen.

Lucky for me it was a different story

with the magnum.

But he might improve in time

and as long as he remained at large..

Well, when it comes to being sh*t at

I'm not big on just sitting around.

I'll give you a call.

Regularly?

Like clockwork.

[phone ringing]

- Spenser. - It's me Spense.

Please, d-don't hang up.

Convince me why I shouldn't, Joey.

I gotta tell you what happened to me Spense. I gotta tell you.

'Yeah, so go on, tell me.'

I'm at Samolies.

It closes at .

Now, I know. To tell you the truth I broke in,

Spense, come get me, I'm scared.

No, Joey, you tell me.

'Can't, the phone's for calling your bookie.'

You get in the weather, not for talking heart-to-heart.

I'll think about it.

Don't ever think about anything, Spenser.

Just do it.

'Don't forget who taught you that, Spense.'

'And don't forget me.'

[phone line beeping]

That wasn't so hard now, was it, Joey?

He's never gonna show up. He won't trust me.

[chuckles] Of course he doesn't, Joey. Who the hell would?

Unless, unless maybe he thinks you're trying to set me up

the way, the way you set him up.

'Now, now I like that idea a lot.'

You tell Spenser that you can deliver me to him.

But from the heart, Joey.

I need it from the heart.

But I know how much you hate my guts.

You just convince Spenser of that.

And he will come.

He tried to k*ll me.

He may still be trying to k*ll me for all I know.

But you're still going to the gym.

He could lead me to K.C.

Spenser, what if it's another set-up.

He sounded scared.

You can't give up on him, can you?

That's the worst part, Suz.

I think I already have.

[mellow music]

I didn't know if you'd show up or not.

After everything that's happened I was hoping

you'd still trust me.

I wouldn't trust you for the time of day, Joey.

- I know. I know. - What do you want?

That over there, first time I'd seen you

working out on the heavy bag and I says to myself

Joey, now there's a right hand that could stop traffic.

That was a long time ago, Joey. We were kids.

Best time of my life, Spenser.

Working hard everyday, getting good fights.

Hell, we weren't making much money, but it didn't matter.

We could still believe then.

Not gonna work, Joey.

It was a long time ago. It's gone.

What's done is done.

He was gonna k*ll me, Spenser.

I know that don't make what I done to you okay

but you gotta know he was gonna k*ll me.

I figured you must have had a good reason.

He had my number, that K.C. kid.

Some people they wanna bring out what's good in you

some people what's not so good.

I was too hungry to get my boy Danny a sh*t at the title.

And K.C. promised if I got him to t*nk one fight

then he'd get me a title sh*t.

Then he took the dive, the title sh*t never happened.

But I was hoping--

If he didn't help why didn't you call me then?

'Cause I didn't know I needed help.

When I did it was too late.

You thought it was too late.

I wanna do right by you, Spenser.

I know I can't undo what I'd done to you

but I wanna do right.

I'll give you K.C.

You know where he is?

He's waiting for you.

He's got a new place at the Verde Church.

It's rich, ain't it? K.C. and a church?

I'm suppose to bring you there tomorrow.

He'll be waiting, him and that psycho heavyweight Ralphie.

K.C. wants to see you hurt so bad he can hardly keep still.

But there's a back way in.

We go in that way, we could surprise him.

I know what you're thinking.

I set you up once, you're thinking the little creep's

gonna do it again. Spenser..

I swear to you by everything sacred I'm telling the truth.

So what is sacred to you now, Joey?

Not your word. Not your honor, not your friendship.

I deserve that.

You got me, pal.

I don't know why you should believe anything I tell you.

I don't, Joey. I don't believe in anything you say.

[mellow music]

(Susan) 'You're not an easy man to find.'

(Hawk) 'Good for the reputation.'

There was something I thought you should know.

I had a teacher in seventh grade, used to say

there were things that I should know.

It was usually about European folk who been dead years.

Well, this is more current events than history.

I do like to keep up with the time.

Joey's come out of hiding.

He begged for forgiveness and to atone for what he's done

he's going to take Spenser to K.C.

Not a front page news.

- I'm scared for him, Hawk. - You should be.

His friend tends to spread death and destruction

everywhere he goes.

Spenser knows that now, but he went anyway.

He said he wanted to get K.C. before K.C. got him.

- The fool on a fool's mission. - He needs your help.

I will not help him be stupid.

Well, whatever happened to loyalty?

Any man who jumps off a high building

expects you to follow does not deserve loyalty.

He doesn't expect you to.

- I expect you to. - Ah.

As much as a fool that Spenser's been lately

he does not deserve you either.

[intense music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

Upstairs to the right.

[suspenseful music]

- 'Ah!' - Spenser!

[groans]

He shuck at me, Spense.

I was supposed to double cross you

and bring you in the front but he shuck at me.

Spenser, how do you feel?

- Like the last rose of summer. - That's good.

Because it's the best you're gonna feel

for a long, long time.

Ralph, say hello to Spenser.

[laughs]

Get your coat off.

Wait a minute, Ralph. Let him get set.

That's it, Ralph.

[laughs]

Spenser, Spenser. Look around, will you?

You'll see that all the doors are locked.

This is now your prison.

And I put you here, just like you put me in prison.

And the only way for you to get out, Spenser

is to b*at Ralph, which is gonna be pretty difficult

because as you can see the more you hurt Ralph

'the more he seems to like it.'

You could surrender yourself to me right now, you know?

Oh, that's a good one, Spenser, always a wise cr*ck.

- Nail him, Ralph. - Defend yourself, Spenser.

Put your hands up!

Keep your left up, Spenser, up!

(K.C.) 'Be careful please, Ralph. Don't get him mad.'

Get up, Spense.

Let's go b*at on the college kid

very big sportive warp hole, Spenser.

Stay away from his right!

(K.C.) 'I didn't have a chance, Spenser.'

I grew up in the suburbs, saying things like

please and thank you.

I was the president of the junior achievement club.

They ate me for dinner on the inside, Spenser!

Yes! Yes, Ralph!'

Stick him, Ralph!

Spenser, I keep telling you! Keep your left up!

Up! Remember what I taught ya!

Laying on my bunk late at night

aching all over from the b*ating they had given me.

But one thing, Spenser, one thing kept me alive

'and that was knowing that you were gonna hurt'

one hell of a lot more than I ever did.

You can take him, he's getting tired, he's almost punched out.

- Tell him to punch in my face. - Get in there!

(K.C.) 'Oh, yes, Ralph.'

Spense, get up! This is the big fight.

[intense music]

Get up! Now!

[dramatic music]

Yeah, fetch him, Ralph!

[music continues]

He's yours! You got him, Spenser. You got him!

Alright! You could stop traffic with that right.

Hit him with the right!

Yeah!

You did it, Spense. You did it!

- Looking like a champ! - Feeling like a champ!

I knew you could do it.

I knew you could wind that son of a g*n's clock.

Spenser, ha, looks like you won.

But you actually lost.

You can't do this, K.C. Spenser b*at him fair.

Oh, Joey, come on. Nothing's fair.

Just like in the joint, right, Spenser?

Everything's turned on its head

until you realize that nothing really matters.

You won the big one, K.C.

You're not gonna do this.

You're not gonna do this!

Ah!

[groaning]

Now that's exactly what I'm talking about.

He tries to be a hero and he ends up a blood stain

on the canvas. Nothing really matters.

Same thing's gonna happen to you.

To tell you the truth my only regret is that I can't k*ll you

a couple of times.

[grunting]

You pull that trigger, you dope

you're gonna have one more regret!

Ease your thumb on the hammer and lower the w*apon.

I don't repeat myself!

What's the deal?

Spend the rest of your life in stir or spend it dead

it's your call, you dope!

That's a real tough choice.

[g*nsh*t]

I just wanted to find a man who doesn't know night from day.

I thought I was too dangerous to be around.

Just wanted to make sure you got what you deserved.

Oh.

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chatter]

Friends like Joey, huh?

You alright?

Do I look alright?

Take it easy, Spenser.

I'll get your statement later downtown.

Spenser! See you around.

- Careful. - Yeah, Joey.

See you around.

[indistinct chatter]

(Spenser) We had shared much over the years, Joey and I.

And part of me would always be a little sad

for the friendship lost

the trust that had been destroyed.

Yet the lessons I learned from him were many.

For his gifts to me, confidence, courage..

...and the ability to dream

he would remain a part of my life forever.
