Woman: Okay, in three.

Good.

Okay, welcome back to vtv's sun jam ' .

I can't hear you.

That's better.

We just heard the dual cams
doing the "I can't love" thing.

They took a header on
this week's video countdown

but it's still a hot jam, baby!

Yeah, blade, it's so
hot, I'm sweating all over!

Whoo!

All right.

Do you want it?

Do you want it?

Yeah, baby, we want it, don't we?

Of course you do.

And I want every last one

of you channel surfers out there.

So you know what, do me a favor, will you?

Take your hands off that remote control

and put them on me.

Those two other video networks

they may be bigger but, does size matter?

No, it doesn't.

It's how you work with what you got.

Whoo!

God, I love cable.

Whoo!

Okay, let's get ready to rock.

With "camera crazy" by wicked runners!

Yeah!

What the hell?

Are you okay?

Give him some space.

Give him some air, here.

Where's my Mike?

Uh, uh, stick around.

It looks like we need to
take a commercial break.

Stay calm, very calm.

Ah...

I am going to k*ll him.

Hi, Harry.

How you feeling, Harry?

Peachy.

Just peachy.

Harry, do you have a vase?

Yeah.

Second cupboard, top shelf.

You are very thoughtful, cassy.

Thank you.

I know... but actually

this was Tom's idea.

Harry, I just wanted to tell you again

how sorry I am.

Do you realize you are the only man I know

who can make golf a high-risk sport?

Harry, it was an accident.

I put the brake on the golf cart.

I heard a click, it was on...

Ow.

Sorry, Harry.

That, that... was completely my fault.

I'm going to k*ll him.

I'm going to k*ll him!

Careful.

Ryan, do you have hostile
feelings towards me?

I mean secretly

because this was a very
passive-aggressive act.

Oh, no, it's not, Harry.

Cassy!

Yeah?

Uh, have you heard from frannie yet?

Yeah, she's having such a good time

with her sister that she's
going to stay an extra week.

They're going to Bermuda.

Scuba diving!

Harry, I'll make this up to you.

There is only one way

you could make this up to me, Ryan.

Here.

Start scratching.

Oh, uh...

Ryan.

No, no, no, we'll be right there.

What?

Attempted m*rder.

Harry, there'll be a uniform
here to pick you up, okay?

Bring you to the station.

What? Wait, hey! Hey...

Hey, don't worry.

You're still my hero.

Who's...?

Thank you.

Thank you very much.

Stop daydreaming.

Your rock and roll days are over.

Says you.

What have we got?

Ballistics pulled two . slugs

out of the stage.

And based on velocity and impact trajectory

they think the r*fle
was fired from the roof

of that hotel.

Tom: Tough sh*t.

No, the school depository
and the grassy knoll...

That was a tough sh*t.

On the tough barometer,
this was medium tough.

Man: Sergeants Ryan and St. John?

I'm cliff carpenter,
head of security for vtv.

Wouldn't know it by the
way I handled this one.

Yeah. Who's in charge here?

Follow me.

You don't have to do that, Jackie.

I'm not spooked and I don't
need the bloody down time.

I don't care what you need, blade.

This is my show and I call the sh*ts.

It's best we shut down.

Tom: She's right.

We're with palm beach homicide.

Look, we're not shutting down.

It's just some bloody nut
job taking target practice.

It's already done.

We pulled your permits.

What?

Can you think of anyone
who might want you dead?

Sweetheart, when you've
done this as long as I have

that's a long list.

Occasionally, our show offends people.

Certain members of the religious right.

Blade: It's no big deal.

Listen, I shock people.

Sometimes it gets them all sideways.

I know you.

I don't think so.

No, no, you're from Boston, right?

Yeah.

You played lead guitar

in a club band called "juice."

Tom: Yeah.

You look a lot cuter with short hair.

I don't, I don't think we've met.

Oh, shame on you.

We were sleeping together

for about two months.

Tom, it's me, Jill?

Jill... mobley?

Yeah. Actually, it's Billie now.

Yeah, you looked different then.

Well, I had a little makeover.

A little?

Her doctor got implant happy

and went on a surgical bender.

Shut up, blade.

I don't need this kind of Brian damage

from a Howard stern wannabe.

At least I'm not flavor
of the month, darling.

You have a conference call from New York.

Please find this guy.

I need my talent safe, and happy.

Listen, um, I'm only going to be

in town for a week.

And I'd really like to see you.

That is, if you can make time

for old times.

Yeah.

You dated Billie rock?

No, I dated Jill mobley.

Cass, it was only for a couple of months.

Uh-huh. Wow!

You blew it.

Ballistic boys found a wind Gauge

on the rooftop of the hotel
across from the crime scene.

No prints.

Tom: Looks like

our sh**t's a pro.

A pro fires three times,
and not one hit? Nah.

Maybe he intended to miss.

Back to my question.

Why does a professional take pot sh*ts

at a couple of v.J.S

during a live broadcast?

Publicity.

What, you think this is a publicity stunt?

Makes for good drama.

What?

They're back on the air.

I thought we were

in agreement about you staying

off the air.

After the sh**ting our ratings spiked.

Our network talked to your mayor.

Here we are.

Let me show you how we
poison the youth of america.

And we're live in five, four, three, two...

Up on camera one, cue Billie and blade.

Hey, everybody, welcome
back to vtv's sun jam ' !

Whoo!

Tighten on two.

Okay, all you carbon-based life-forms

at home watching television,
I have a question for you.

You want to know where the beef is?

Do you want to know

where the beef is?

That's right.

'Cause it's right here on vtv

because it's now time

for the hottest bods on the beach contest.

Director: Pull back, camera three.

Give them room to do their thing.

What about remote
control camera number four?

It's just burning tape.

I'll shut it down.

Now, guys, this is one hot bod.

Baby, you can ride my
jet ski anytime. Whoo!

Tom: Call the paramedics.

Man: Hurry up!

Hurry up! Hurry up!

Excuse me.

If you came here to tell
me I told you so, save it.

Your partner already did.

No. We need the videotape

that you sh*t this segment.

Sure, anything I can do to help.

Thank you.

I don't know why I'm crying.

I couldn't stand him.

Sometimes you feel more for people

than you realize.

Right.

You didn't know blade.

We're going to take you inside now, Billie.

Jill.

Jill.

Get some rest.

Officer.

Thanks.

So much for the publicity theory.

Are you kidding me?

You can't even buy this kind of publicity.

CNN is doing coverage already.

But the good thing is, is we have the tape.

We also got a hundred witnesses

who say they didn't see a thing.

Dropped his gloves.

Sloppy work for a pro.

Look at the line of flight.

See, the g*n was dropped
over there, the gloves here.

Mm-hmm.

Now, the Marina's back here.

There's no exit unless you leave by boat.

Street's this way.

He didn't go out there.

Why would he go over here?

Well, either way he knew

he'd be taking a chance,
attracting attention.

Maybe he didn't go anywhere.

You know what?

Our k*ller could be
right amongst this crowd.

Let's go interview them.

Maybe he's still here.

Four cameras rolling

not one of them sees a thing?

You want to k*ll somebody

you study the layout pretty good.

Those cameras were in
plain view for two days.

Morton's working on the g*n now.

And?

Well, the k*ller didn't grind
down the serial number

far enough, but he thinks he can lift

at least part of it.

We get some numbers, we can get a match.

Woman: There's a jacquelyn Webster here

to see you, captain.

All right, send her in.

Captain lipschitz, miss Webster.

How can I help you?

This is embarrassing, captain.

I wish I didn't have to ask.

Ask what?

Well, our star, Billie
rock, needs protection.

I offered her an ex-secret service agent

but she insists only one man will do.

Sergeant Ryan.

Wait a minute, you don't
plan on continuing, do you?

Yes.

Your star was just m*rder*d.

I know this must sound
cold to you, but a great deal

of money was invested

in bringing us down here from New York.

People put their careers on the line.

This incident made us
number one in our time slot

for the first time.

And the threats were
against blade, not Billie.

Will you do it?

No.

What if my production
company made a sizable donation

to your police pension plan?

I'm always looking for a write-off.

You finance the show yourself?

From the bottom up.

Started on a shoestring.

Now I can afford the whole shoe.

Well, captain?

How sizable is sizable?

Twenty-five?

, .

He'll do it.

I'm not doing it.

Of course you are.

There are orphans and
widows counting on you.

Get me some parmesan.

Had dairy in it.

Harry, I don't know the first thing

about being a bodyguard.

Cassy: It's easy.

You just stay close to her.

And keep your eyes on the ball.

And if somebody tries to k*ll her, you jump

in front of the b*llet.

Cassy, I'm protecting a video jockey

not the president of the United States.

Wear kevlar.

I don't want you getting hurt.

That sounded like concern, Harry.

It is concern.

You know you're late?

Go ahead, get out of here.

That's my spa...!

You s...

Bye.

How's it going, sergeant Ryan?

Swell.

You look great.

You make me feel very safe.

You didn't want to do this, did you?

No.

No, I didn't.

I, it's nothing personal, Jill.

It's just not what I do, you know.

So how did you get into all of this?

You mean, how could I
give up a good, steady job

as a cocktail waitress?

I moved to New York on a dare.

Somebody bet me I
couldn't make it, so I did.

Well, you're damn good.

I'm glad you think so.

Where are we going?

A personal appearance.

Where?

Club Tsunami.

Well, how come nobody told me about this?

I just did.

No, no, no.

No, this is too dangerous, Jill.

Blade's not even out of forensics yet.

It's not my call.

Besides, we're going to hold

a candlelight vigil in his honor.

Jill, you don't understand something.

If I'm going to protect
you, you got to tell me

about these things in advance

so that we can secure the location.

I'll have cliff get you an itinerary.

I want you to wear this; Put it on.

Yeah. I have nothing to put it under.

Besides, the combat-retro look

is way out of style.

Jill, put it on.

I can't wear it.

I'll look stupid and scared.

Do you think I should be scared?

Yeah.

Are you?

Yes.

I just don't want you to get k*lled.

Can't happen.

I'm with you.

Have you seen that Van before?

Yeah, a couple of times at the Marina

and the hotel.

Tom: Stop the car.

Get out of the car.

Get out.

Get out of the Van.

Get out...

Get out of the Van!

Check the contrast on three.

That was righteous, everyone.

Now, I know blade would
want us to rock this place

so let's do him right by
getting loud and sassy!

This girl is out of her mind.

Got it covered?

Yeah.

I'll check the crowd.

The female regurgitates
its prey, partially ingested

but still alive and squirming

for its hairless young to feed upon.

Oh, change it, change it. Quick.

Oof. Gosh.

I used to love nature shows.

Yeah, then they got so real.

Hello?

Tom: Yeah, it's me.

Listen, I need you to run a plate for me.

Ooh, are we having fun?

Don't ask.

Okay, ready?

Yeah, sh**t.

-Peter-Oscar-Peter- - - .

Come on, Tommy, let's get it on.

In a second, Billie.

Not right now, hon.

Don't be shy.

It's only national television.

Billie, don't do this.

Cassy?

Yeah, be a good sport.

Show her what you got.

Come on.

Billie, it's too dangerous, okay?

Come on, live large. Cass?

Whoo!

So how's he doing?

I think the female has
just swallowed her prey.

Get down!

Turn it off, turn it off!

Get out of my face.

Billie: What do you want me to do, Tom?

Quit my job?

Go into hiding?

You keep pulling that kind of crap

you're going to get yourself k*lled.

Who do you think you're talking to?

You know, I'm not some
little groupie anymore.

You do not tell me what's
good for me and what isn't.

Is the publicity worth that much?

What's happened to you?

Jacquelyn: Hey, she's doing her job.

And if you do the job we
paid you for, she'll be fine

and we'll be gone in a couple of days.

Fine, you want me to do my job?

Then you let me do my way, no negotiation.

Cassy: Tom... look, I think we all

want the same thing here

and that is Billie alive.

Let's work towards that.

I'm not canceling my scheduled events.

Cliff: What if we secure the location,

we beef up the bodyguards

nobody goes in or out without a pass?

I can do that.

Can you live with that?

You want to do this right

you search every guest

and you wear kevlar.

Oh, come on.

People don't exactly tune in
to see the color of my eyes.

Then paint it pink.

Put the network logo on it.

Make a production of it, Billie.

Just wear it.

Well?

Fine, whatever.

Fine, then it's settled.

Now, if you don't mind

I need to borrow sergeant Ryan

for a second

because we may have a lead.

You already have a suspect?

I can't discuss it yet.

Don't take chances.

One k*ll in three attempts.

It's not the average of a professional.

So we got a crazed fan on the loose.

Not much of a sh*t.

How's Morton making out with that g*n?

Oh, he lifted three digits.

The others were obscured.

It's, um... f- - .

What if this isn't a crazy?

Maybe the first attempt
was meant to succeed

and the rest was window dressing.

Cass, you want publicity,
you fire a few sh*ts.

You don't k*ll your star.

Lipschitz: You know,

I had research

look into jacquelyn Webster productions.

You know how she started
that company on a shoestring?

For the first couple of years

blade worked for practically nothing.

Along comes Billie, the
company starts to show a profit.

The only problem is, % of those profits

are still going to blade.

Wow, that must be worth millions.

So why the attempts on Billie?

Publicity was working

ratings were up... why not?

You get that license pl...

I'll do it.

Belongs to a Henry scafe.

He works in a hardware store.

Doesn't sound like a gunman.

Record doesn't look like one, either.

Not even so much as a parking violation.

You got an address?

Yeah, north beach road.

Well, I'll flip him, see if he spills.

Just go, go.

I guess I didn't give you props

for saving my life.

"Props"?

You know, a thank you

a thumbs up, a way to go, man.

I think you've been hanging around

with teenagers too long.

Yeah, I guess I have.

Make yourself at home.

You still play?

Oh, not really.

Just chords.

Helps me unwind.

How do you unwind?

Billie...

I exercise.

Well, uh, I'm going to take a shower.

We could do a water workout.

You're k*lling me.

I don't think that's a good idea.

Why not?

I'm supposed to be protecting you.

I don't want this to get emotional.

Is that what it would be for you?

Emotional?

Yeah, that's what it would be for me.

That's sweet.

I appreciate your cooperation.

Anything for the boys in blue.

People in blue.

Yeah, thanks.

Tom: ♪ every single word

you say rings true ♪

God, I always loved that song.

I'm surprised you remember.

It was a long time ago.

Hey, you're talking to your first groupie.

I was in the front row for every gig.

Those were good times, Billie.

What happened to you?

Why did you give up on your music?

Oh, well, I found
myself in a red velour suit

singing "my way" in a bad hotel.

It kind of gave me up.

Seriously, how'd you end up down here?

Circumstance, disappointment.

You know, life.

Yeah... we had some good times.

Yeah...

We were just getting going

when you stopped calling.

Why?

Well, Jill, that was ten years ago.

I can't remember what I was thinking.

You broke my heart.

Come on, we only dated a couple of times.

It was long enough.

You keep staring at me.

Just looking into your eyes.

They're so kind

like they know something good.

I used to love the way you looked at me.

Made me feel so safe and wanted.

We shouldn't do this.

We shouldn't.

So stop me.

I'll get the door.

She's on in minutes.

All right! Hello, everybody

and welcome back to the
last day of vtv's sun jam ' .

Now, in case you're wondering,
"what the heck is she wearing?"

Let me tell you, darlings,
it's a bulletproof vest.

You know, something
called kevlar, we don't know.

Anyway, I'm just trying to
make it out of here alive.

Okay, but enough about me.

Are you all ready to rock?

Then let's hit it

with "hidden smile" from secret agenda.

Ryan.

Okay, Henry scafe...

He's not a fan but he's definitely crazy.

How crazy?

Try protest flyers

placards, detailed
photographs of the crime scene

and not to mention a box of . slugs

in his desk drawer.

You got a description?

Let's see, s...

Dark, balding, uh... scruffy face...

Stop him!

Tom: Get up, get up!

What the hell is that?

It's blood.

It's blood!

I found these in your apartment.

I've never seen them before.

Tom: What's with the blood?

Is it some kind of warning?

It's chicken blood

and yeah, people should be warned:

Children, parents, every
decent citizen in this country.

You're saying this was a protest?

That isn't a euphemism.

Children have d*ed.

Overdoses, suicides.

They see their heroes do it.

It's cool, a social statement.

People like vtv

who promote this garbage,
they're responsible.

I want the public to see
the blood on their hands

in living color.

Blade Johnson?

I protest; I don't k*ll people.

You have photographs
detailing the vtv location.

You know where the security is.

You know where the camera was.

Do you think vtv is going to Grant me

a permit to protest their TV sets?

People like me, average parents

we don't have that kind of access.

So I scope out their locations, I sneak in

I take what opportunities I can get.

My intention was to
interrupt their broadcast

splash them with blood and
let those children watching

see them for what they really are

before they ruin more lives.

You're a parent?

Yes, I am.

You live in a one-bedroom apartment.

My son jumped off a bridge...

k*lled himself in San Francisco.

It was two days after Kurt cobain d*ed.

Some hero, huh?

Is that your g*n?

I don't know.

Well, somebody tried to scrape
the serial numbers off this g*n

but they were unsuccessful.

And you have a g*n
with the same first three

serial numbers on it.

You bought it in ' .

My apartment was broken into last week.

They took my g*n and some money.

I reported it to the police.

You can check it out.

You're going to need a lawyer.

I didn't k*ll anyone.

I don't k*ll people.

So you said.

Cassy: I checked out his story.

His apartment was robbed five days ago

just before the vtv sh**t started.

No sign of scafe in the crowd.

Well, he scoped the site.

He knew where the cameras were positioned.

Cassy: Maybe at the amphitheater.

But in the club, all those
cameras were hand-held.

That'd be pretty hard to avoid.

Four cameras, each rolling
on three separate occasions

and not one of them picks up the sh**t.

Who's positioning these cameras?

Tom: Jacquelyn Webster.

Lipschitz: Interesting.

This is not the first time your Mr. Scafe

pulled a stunt like this, you know.

I've been digging around.

Here, this just came in from New York.

He was arrested in Manhattan.

Tried to break in to the
vtv production offices

during a television broadcast.

No weapons, just a vial
of blood in his pocket.

Charges were dropped
a couple of days later.

The report was signed by cliff carpenter.

Cliff was on security that night.

He should have recognized scafe.

Maybe he did.

He did.

He did and so did jacquelyn.

How much longer is vtv in town for?

They're striking their set right now.

Well, wouldn't it be a
good idea to go over there

and start asking questions

before your Mr. Carpenter hits the road?

Motive?

Jacquelyn wants blade dead

because she doesn't
want to pay his freight.

Accomplice?

Cliff carpenter knew scafe;

knew he'd be hanging around the set.

He could have broken
into scafe's apartment,

taken the g*n.

He knew exactly where the cameras were

and exactly when to strike.

Scafe would've taken the fall.

But if scafe doesn't,
jacquelyn's in trouble.

She loses her exit plan.

No one to blame it on.

No, she would have had a back-up plan.

And scafe isn't exactly

the kind of guy who's predictable.

And miss Webster has too much to lose.

Well, I say we rattle her cage.

See if she puts her back-up plan

into action.

Great work, guys.

See you in New York.

Woman: Thanks, jacquelyn.

Man: Yeah, take care.

In a hurry?

No, I'm glad you came.

I need to pay sergeant Ryan.

It's all there.

You can count it if you like.

I trust you.

So was that photographer

our sn*per?

No, he was a protester.

You remember Henry scafe?

What do you mean?

Cassy: He tried to break into

your New York offices.

Cliff carpenter signed the complaint.

I don't recall.

I guess it's just as
well we're through here.

Back to our nice, safe studio.

Well, not quite yet.

We still have an unsolved homicide

and we'll have to ask you

to hold your crew here overnight.

They have families to get back to.

Well, the fact is, any one
of them could be our k*ller.

You can't be serious.

We'll by know tomorrow.

Forensics picked up
a print off the handgun.

They got it on the inside of the g*n.

So whoever loaded the g*n
forgot to wipe the end of the cylinder.

They almost missed it.

Well, I can't stay.

I have an important board
meeting in the morning.

Well, you'll have to reschedule.

I can't, they're planned way in advance.

We can detain you downtown
if you don't cooperate.

We'd rather not.

It's your choice.

What is this?

You're treating me like I'm a suspect.

It's nothing personal.

Everybody's a suspect
until we find the k*ller.

Of course.

I'll be in my room if you need me.

How are we doing on the hope meter?

Level ten.

We have to talk.

Yes, we do.

The cops were here.

Yeah, so?

They pulled a print off the g*n.

Someone forgot to check the cylinder.

I wiped the g*n, just like you told me.

I don't remember telling
you any such thing.

Fine, but you hired me...

I do remember you telling me things.

Like how you hated blade,
wanted to see him dead.

Like how you broke into scafe's apartment

and stole his g*n.

What the hell are you talking about?

Somehow during blade's sh**ting

the remote camera was accidentally left on.

I found a videotape today

while I was clearing the machines.

It has a beautiful close-up of you

f*ring a g*n

right at blade Johnson's head.

It was your idea to k*ll him.

You said you'd pay me.

You said that, you said you'd...

What are you doing?

You were supposed to make sure

scafe took the fall.

You screwed up.

Tag, you're it.

When the police see the tape

they'll realize you k*lled blade

and I will be shocked.

Almost as shocked as I'll be

when I hear about your su1c1de.

Please, don't.

Help me!

Drop the g*n now.

You stay right there.

I won't sh**t.

That's fine.

But my partner's out in the hall

and he will.

You know, my partner lied.

She does that.

You didn't find a print

on the g*n, did you?

He lies, too.

Occupational hazard.

Let's go.

Let's go.

This business makes people crazy.

Yeah, well, ambition can do that.

You think I'd be happier
as a cocktail waitress?

Dream on.

I'm exactly where I want to be.

You could be, too.

Mtv is giving me my own show.

I could write you in the contract.

Really.

I could use someone who makes me feel safe.

Jill...

Take care of yourself.

I'll try.

You know where to find me.

If you hurry, you can still catch her.

I don't think that one's
going to work out long term.

You could always take some time off

and have fun short term.

You trying to get rid of me?

No.

No... but Harry may be.

He's fine.

It just, it sounds worse than it is.

What?

He was leaving the station

he wheels to the top of the stairs, right?

He puts on his hand brake

he's waiting for his driver

and then he says he remembers

hearing the brake click, but...

But what?

Thump, thump, thump, thump...

Thump?

Thump.

Oh, god.
