NARRATOR: Continuing to the Lakeside Resort,

site of the upcoming Grand Festival,

our heroes have come across a quiet seaside town,

where they are about to keep a very special appointment.

DAWN: Hey, there she is!

DAWN: Mom!

JOHANNA, GLAMEOW: Dawn! Hi!

DAWN: Sorry we're late!

PIPLUP: [GREETING]

BROCK: It's nice to see you again, Johanna!

ASH: Same for me!

PIKACHU: [GREETING]

JOHANNA: It's nice to see everyone looking well!

ASH, BROCK, DAWN: Thanks!

BROCK: But why meet up here?

JOHANNA: See, every now and then,

I travel to different towns to offer a seminar called

"My Very First Pokémon Coordinator Class."

And the students are all young children.

ASH: That sounds awesome!

JOHANNA: And it just so happens that

I'm presenting a Coordinator class

in this very town first thing tomorrow!

DAWN: Well, duh.

Mom was a Top Coordinator, after all!

PIPLUP: [PROUD]

BROCK: So what exactly do you teach at this class?

JOHANNA: This is the lesson plan.

DAWN: Let me see!

WAITER: Excuse me, ma'am, you have a phone call.

JOHANNA: Thanks! I'll be right back in a jif!

ASH: Sure!

ASH: Don't hold out, Dawn, what's it say?

DAWN: "Getting to know Pokémon, and how to catch a Pokémon,

and being a Coordinator, and how to breed Pokémon."

ASH: Man, that stuff sounds great!

DAWN: I'd love to check it out! You guys?

ASH: You bet!

BROCK: Yeah, me, too!

DAWN: Hi, Mom...

ASH, BROCK, PIKACHU: [WORRIED]

JOHANNA: A problem...

DAWN: What's the matter, Mom?

JOHANNA: There's going to be a Pokémon Contest tomorrow

in Neighborly Town, right near here.

But Nurse Joy is working round the clock

caring for a sick Pokémon,

so it appears that they're short one judge!

DAWN: Wait, does that mean...

JOHANNA: That's right,

they want me to fill in as a judge at the contest.

But my class is tomorrow.

DAWN: Mom, no need to worry!

ASH, BROCK, JOHANNA, PIKACHU: [SURPRISED]

DAWN: We'll teach your students for you!

ASH: Yeah! Of course we will!

BROCK: I'll handle the breeding section!

PIPLUP: [EXCITED]

JOHANNA: That would be wonderful,

if you don't mind.

ASH: We'll handle it!

PIKACHU: [EXCITED]

DAWN: Good morning! My name is Dawn,

and we're here today to teach the Pokémon Coordinator class

for my mother! PIPLUP: [GREETING]

ASH: My name's Ash, and this is my partner, Pikachu!

PIKACHU: [GREETING]

BROCK: I'm Brock, and my goal is to be the top Pokémon breeder

in the world!

THOMAS: Come on. You sure you know what you're doing?

Won any contest ribbons?

DAWN: Ta-da! Just take a look inside this case!

I've won five contest ribbons, see?

ASH: And me? I've got seven badges so far!

GIRL, BOY: Wow!

THOMAS: 'Course that means you're missing a badge.

ASH: I guess you could look at it that way...

DAWN: All righty then.

Let's pet and get to know some Pokémon!

PIKACHU: [EXCITED]

PIPLUP: [EXCITED]

THOMAS: Please!

You can't go anywhere without finding tons of Pokémon!

BOY: I can't believe how soft its fur is!

GIRL: Nice to meet you, Piplup!

PIPLUP: [HAPPY]

PIPLUP: [FRIENDLY]

PIPLUP: [UPSET]

PIPLUP: [ANGRY]

DAWN: That's no way to treat a Pokémon!

You have to try and be nice to them instead!

DAWN: So what's your name?

- THOMAS: Thomas. - DAWN: So, Thomas,

put yourself in the Pokémon's position.

You wouldn't want to be teased, now would you?

Same goes for Pokémon.

THOMAS: All right, I hear you...

ASH: I know!

Guys, I think you should get to meet a lot more Pokémon...

DAWN: Great idea!

Okay, how about we bring out a bunch of our Pokémon?

HAPPINY, SUDOWOODO, CROAGUNK, STARAPTOR: [APPEARING]

TORTERRA, INFERNAPE, BUIZEL, GIBLE: [APPEARING]

PACHIRISU, CYNDAQUIL, BUNEARY, MAMOSWINE: [APPEARING]

DAWN: That's more like it!

DAWN: So let's get to know some Pokémon!

But be nice to them, okay?

GIRL X , BOY X : Okay!

MARIAN: The excitement at the Neighborly Town Pokémon Contest

is real and growing!

Our next Coordinator is none other than the entertaining

and unpredictable Jessilina!

JESSILINA: And don't forget gorgeous!

All right, Seviper, Rocket Start!

SEVIPER: [APPEARING]

JESSILINA: On a roll like this,

I'll soon be experiencing fourth-ribbon bliss!

MEOWTH: If Jessie were any more pumped up, she'd spring a leak!

JAMES: It'll be raining a fourth ribbon soon.

JESSILINA: You're so right!

BROCK: Pokémon breeding is all about taking the best care

of your Pokémon that you possibly can,

making sure they're happy and healthy!

PIPLUP: [RELAXED]

BOY A: Wow, you feed them Pokémon food, right, Brock?

BROCK: Right! But giving your Pokémon Pokémon food

is just one part of the process!

Breeders adjust the diet and flavor for each one!

HAPPINY: [HAPPY]

BROCK: If you find they aren't eating enough,

you simply change things around a bit!

By doing that, you maintain your Pokémon's good health!

GIRL C: So then, how do you tell if a Pokémon's healthy or not?

BROCK: The easiest way is to check their luster,

and if their body isn't as smooth or healthy-looking

as you'd like,

it could be a sign that they might not be feeling very well.

BOY A: What about them?

BROCK: They're healthy, because they're looking great!

PIPLUP: [ANGRY]

THOMAS: You've got to admit, Piplup,

your face looks a whole lot better now!

PIPLUP: [ANGRY]

PIPLUP: [ANGRY]

THOMAS: Piplup's got a mustache!

DAWN: 'Course it would be Thomas.

ASH: Piplup's having a bad day!

KRABBY: [CURIOUS]

ASH: And then, my Pikachu and Gible battled with each other,

but I just couldn't catch Gible at the time!

After that, Gible followed us.

Hold on... did I really catch Gible?

Well, anyway, Gible and I are together,

and that's what really matters! Isn't that right, Gible?

GIBLE: [AFFECTIONATE]

ASH: Okay, Gible, return!

ASH: And check this. This is a Poké Ball!

PIKACHU: [EXCITED]

ASH: After you have a Pokémon battle with them,

you use this to catch them!

THOMAS: No big deal!

All Trainers have at least one of those!

ASH: Well, I guess you're right!

DAWN: So why don't we all get practicing?

ASH: Good idea! Now...

Let's pretend that target mark's a Pokémon and try to hit it!

BOY A: I want to, I want to!

ASH: Yeah? Cool! Okay...

Let's use this rubber ball for practice!

BOY A: Right!

PIKACHU, PIPLUP: [EXERTION] / [HAPPY]

ASH: And you'll pick them up! Now, give it a shot!

BOY A: And, go!

PIPLUP: [CURIOUS] PIKACHU: [HAPPY]

BOY A: Whoa, I missed! Man, this is hard!

ASH: Keep practicing, and you'll be able to hit it!

- ASH: Who's next? -GIRL C: Me... Me!

ASH: Here you go! Good luck!

GIRL: And here's the windup, and...go!

PIPLUP: [HAPPY]

ASH: Man, you almost had it!

GIRL C: Oh, well...

ASH: Okay, I'll show you how it's done!

See, you've got to pose like this first!

DAWN: You don't really have to pose before you throw it.

BROCK: Nope. Ash is pumped up. You know what that's about!

ASH: This is how you toss it...

BOY X , GIRL X : Awesome!

DAWN: And that's how you catch a Pokémon!

ASH: Then! You make a final pose!

"I caught a Pokémon!"

PIKACHU: [EXCITED]

THOMAS: That's easy! Man!

ASH, PIKACHU: [RESIGNED]

ASH: Thomas, why don't you give it a try?

PIKACHU: [FRIENDLY]

THOMAS: Go!

PIPLUP: [PAINED]

ASH, DAWN, GIRL X , BOY X , PIKACHU: [SHOCKED]

PIPLUP: [ANGRY]

DAWN: Thomas, no!

THOMAS: Hey, don't get mad at me,

since you told me to throw it!

ASH: Thomas sure loves to joke around, doesn't he?

BROCK: But why tease just Piplup?

THOMAS, BOY X , GIRL X : Time to eat!

BOY: Wow! Yummy!

BROCK: Thank you!

DAWN: Brock has got to be the greatest chef in the world!

Thomas, how is it?

THOMAS: Uh, it's okay.

DAWN, BROCK: Well, isn't that... nice!

DAWN: Brock made a whole bunch, so have as much as you like!

BOY X , GIRL X : Yay!

JESSILINA: One more round to go, and this baby is mine!

JAMES: Our jumping Jessie is on fire!

MEOWTH: Yeah, Jess is on a slow roast to victory!

ASH: So get ready, Dawn, you're up next!

The next class is for Coordinators!

BROCK: Hey, what's wrong, Dawn?

DAWN: I'm worried about Thomas, that's what's wrong!

I just hope I'll do a good job.

ASH: Hey, Thomas just likes to pull practical jokes.

No need to worry. You're fine!

DAWN: I hope you're right.

BROCK: Dawn, just do your best, and you'll be okay!

DAWN: Maybe...

DAWN: All right, everybody.

A Pokémon Contest has two rounds:

the Performance Stage and the Contest Battle.

A Coordinator needs to decide what kind of performance style

they're going to use and what moves they'll be using as well.

Your Pokémon is always the focus.

Everybody with me?

BOY X , GIRL X : Yeah!

DAWN: Round One's where a Coordinator shows off

their Pokémon. See?

THOMAS: Sorry,

but I don't have a clue what you're talking about.

THOMAS: Say exactly what you mean, okay?

DAWN: Ah, uh...

You show off your Pokémon's cuteness, how's that?

THOMAS: Pokémon's cuteness? Yeah, right.

DAWN: This will be much faster if I just show you!

MAMOSWINE, CYNDAQUIL: [APPEARING]

DAWN: All right, watch closely!

DAWN: Now! I'll show you what a combination looks like!

DAWN: Cyndaquil, use Flame Wheel!

CYNDAQUIL: [FLAME WHEEL MOVE]

DAWN: Mamoswine, use Ice Shard!

MAMOSWINE: [ICE SHARD MOVE]

BOY A: Awesome!

BOY B: Pretty!

DAWN: I call this Flame Ice, because it's a flame in ice!

CYNDAQUIL: [PROUD]

MAMOSWINE: [PROUD]

DAWN: Thomas, how's that?

THOMAS: It's all right.

DAWN: Stubborn... okay! I'm going to use the same move,

but with a different Pokémon this time!

ASH: Different Pokémon? PIKACHU: [CURIOUS]

BROCK: Hope it works.

DAWN: Cyndaquil, return!

Pachirisu, come on out! Now!

PACHIRISU: [APPEARING]

DAWN: Ta-da! This time it's Pachirisu!

Cyndaquil's move was with fire,

but this uses Pachirisu's electricity,

which will make the ice sparkle!

And... I call this move Ice Chandelier!

THOMAS, BOY X , GIRL X : Ice Chandelier?

ASH, BROCK: Ice Chandelier?

PIPLUP: [CONFUSED]

DAWN: Mamoswine, Ice Shard!

MAMOSWINE: [ICE SHARD MOVE]

DAWN: Now, shatter it!

MAMOSWINE: [DETERMINED]

ASH: Whoa! Awesome!

DAWN: Pachirisu, Discharge!

PACHIRISU: [DISCHARGE MOVE]

DAWN: It worked!

BOY X , GIRL X : Wow!

PACHIRISU: [CONFUSED]

ASH, BROCK, PIKACHU: [SHOCKED]

DAWN: What happened?

THOMAS: C'mon, that wasn't a finished move!

THOMAS: Besides,

Pachirisu's totally standing still inside the ice!

So it's boring to watch.

DAWN: Guess maybe you're right.

BOY X , GIRL X , PIKACHU, PACHIRISU, MAMOSWINE: [PLAYFUL]

ASH: Hey, what's the matter, Dawn?

DAWN: Thomas was right when he told me

it's not a finished move yet.

DAWN: Hi, Brock!

BROCK: Ice Chandelier isn't going to be

an easy move to master.

ASH: Yeah. Maybe you should start over

and come up with a whole different combination!

DAWN: Yeah, except I really like Ice Chandelier

and want to make it work!

DAWN: I wonder if it can even be done!

THOMAS: Besides,

Pachirisu's totally standing still inside the ice!

DAWN: Of course!

DAWN: Yes! I think I know how to make it work this time around!

DAWN: Okay, listen up! This is the real Ice Chandelier!

DAWN: First off,

Mamoswine will shatter Ice Shard with its tusks.

Next, the shattered Ice Shard will surround Pachirisu.

THOMAS: Oh, so it's just the same thing as before.

DAWN: This is where things change.

Thomas, your comments turned out to be excellent advice!

THOMAS: They did?

DAWN: Before, Pachirisu used Discharge while standing still.

This time, Pachirisu is going to spin during Discharge.

That way, the ice should sparkle more beautifully

than you can imagine!

No need to worry!

Because I'm sure it'll work this time!

ASH: Sounds good! It's worth a shot!

BROCK: Yeah! Let's see how it turns out.

DAWN: Okay, Mamoswine! Use Ice Shard!

MAMOSWINE: [ICE SHARD MOVE]

PACHIRISU: [EXCITED]

DAWN: Mamoswine, shatter it with your tusks!

MAMOSWINE: [DETERMINED]

DAWN: Now for the show!

DAWN: Pachirisu, Discharge!

PACHIRISU: [DISCHARGE MOVE]

BOY B: It's Discharge!

GIRL D: Think it'll be able to spin?

DAWN: Spin right where you are!

PACHIRISU: [EXERTION]

DAWN: Faster, Pachirisu!

PACHIRISU: [DETERMINED]

ASH: Looking good! PIKACHU: [EXCITED]

PACHIRISU: [DAZED]

DAWN: Oh, no.

ASH: Man, that was close!

BROCK: You know, it's a good idea,

but Pachirisu needs to be able to spin a little bit more

for it to work!

DAWN: You okay?

PACHIRISU: [EXCITED]

DAWN: And I was so confident it would work...

Maybe spinning inside the ice isn't going to cut it!

PACHIRISU: [EAGER]

ASH: You can do it, Dawn!

Pachirisu's still pumped and raring to try it again!

PACHIRISU: [EXCITED]

DAWN: Pachirisu, want to take another shot?

THOMAS: Don't waste your time!

THOMAS: Come on now.

Who wouldn't become dizzy from all that spinning?

No matter what you try, it's useless!

DAWN: Thomas, you may be right.

Of course!

MARIAN: And she's done it again!

The winner of the Neighborly Town Pokémon Contest

is none other than Jessilina!

MARIAN: And now for a comment from the judges' table, please!

JOHANNA: Seviper's Haze was simply beautiful,

and its execution of that Poison Tail

was nothing less than exquisite! First rate!

MEOWTH: And Jessie makes a slam dunk for ribbon number four!

JAMES: Then to the Grand Festival with one more!

JAMES, MEOWTH, JESSILINA: A perfect score!

WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

DAWN: Buneary, it's your turn! Go!

BUNEARY: [APPEARING]

ASH: You're using Buneary instead of Mamoswine?

BROCK: What exactly are you up to?

PIKACHU: [CURIOUS]

DAWN: Just you watch!

DAWN: Buneary! Use Ice Beam and surround Pachirisu, now!

BUNEARY: [ICE BEAM MOVE]

DAWN: Use Ice Beam until a ball of ice forms around Pachirisu!

BUNEARY: [ICE BEAM MOVE]

THOMAS: Just like she said!

PIPLUP: [AMAZED]

ASH: What's Dawn trying to do?

BROCK: Of course!

The air pocket in Mamoswine's Ice Shard was really small,

so Pachirisu got dizzy from all that spinning

while all it could do was spin!

But now, with Buneary's Ice Beam surrounding Pachirisu,

there's no need for Pachirisu to spin...

Pachirisu can just run inside that ice sphere!

ASH: Dawn, that was good thinking!

DAWN: All right, Pachirisu, use Discharge while running!

PACHIRISU: [DISCHARGE MOVE]

THOMAS: C'mon, you can do it, Pachirisu, all right!

PACHIRISU: [DETERMINED]

ASH: Go for it!

BROCK: Just a little bit more!

THOMAS: Yeah, all right!

PIPLUP: [CHEERING]

DAWN: Do it!

DAWN: That's it!

GIRL C: Wow!

GIRL D: Pretty!

PIPLUP: [EXCITED]

THOMAS: It worked! It worked! Amazing! Amazing!

PIPLUP: [SURPRISED]

ASH: She did it!

PIKACHU: [AMAZED]

BROCK: Dawn tried but could never quite make it work

using Ice Shard.

By switching to Ice Beam, it works beautifully!

PACHIRISU: [EXCITED]

DAWN: Pachirisu, we did it!

PACHIRISU: [JOYFUL]

DAWN: Buneary? Thanks so much!

DAWN: And thanks, Thomas.

Where's Thomas?

ASH: Yeah, and where's Piplup?

PIKACHU: [EXCITED]

PIPLUP: [PLAYFUL]

DAWN: What is going on with them?

BROCK: That's what that was about!

ASH, DAWN, PIKACHU: [CONFUSED]

BROCK: Thomas must've really liked Piplup

from the start but just didn't know how to say it!

So in Thomas's frustration,

the only thing he knew how to do instead was to tease it.

ASH: Of course!

PIKACHU: [SATISFIED]

THOMAS, PIPLUP: [PLAYFUL]

DAWN: Thomas, I want you to know that

I mastered Ice Chandelier because of your advice.

Thanks a lot!

THOMAS: I tell you,

that Ice Chandelier of yours is really pretty!

DAWN: You think so?

THOMAS: It'll work great in the contest!

DAWN: Thanks, Thomas! I'll do my best!

THOMAS: Piplup, I'm so sorry I teased you like that...

PIPLUP: [FRIENDLY]

ASH: How was the Neighborly Town Contest,

Johanna?

JOHANNA: I'm happy to report that Jessilina

put on a really fantastic performance

and ended up winning!

DAWN: That must mean Jessilina's working hard, too!

JOHANNA: And here's Neighborly Town's specialty,

Neighborly sweet buns!

BROCK: Wow! Thank you so much!

JOHANNA: So, Dawn,

it sounds like you're getting really good at combinations!

DAWN: Yup!

JOHANNA: I'm so glad you're working hard!

ASH: We had a great time!

JOHANNA: I've got something, Dawn...

DAWN: What's this?

JOHANNA: A brand-new dress for the Grand Festival,
