There.

Oh, hi, max.

How do you like what I'm wearing?

It's an artist's smock

And a beret.

That's what they call this hat.

Do you know why I'm wearing it?

Because real artists always wear berets when they paint.

It helps them to be more artistic.

It's like putting on a thinking cap when you're trying to think,

And I want to be a real artist

So I can paint something really special for grandma.

I'm going to paint a rainbow.

- Backyard!

- No, max.

We can't play outside today.

It's too rainy out there.

Why don't you paint a picture for grandma too?

Here's your smock so you don't get paint on your overalls,

And here's a beret.

After all, you want to be just as good a painter as I am,

Don't you?

Okay, you're all set up to paint your masterpiece, max.

Now, a rainbow is made up of curved stripes

Of different colors,

And they're always in the same order.

I've got all my paints out,

But I can't remember which color comes first.

Hmm.

Painting a rainbow is going to be harder than I thought.

Max?

Max.

- Backyard.

- It's too rainy to play outside.

Off with your boots, max.

Feet up.

[Giggles]

, , .

Pull!

Whew.

Oof.

- [Giggles]

- [Groans]

Max, I just remembered.

Red is the first color in the rainbow.

See, if you keep your eyes open like me,

You can figure things out for yourself.

♪ Da da-da, da da-da

- [Sighs]

- Look.

See how hard it's raining?

- Backyard.

- It's the perfect day to be inside

Painting pictures for grandma.

Here you go.

Now let's start our rainbows with a red stripe,

Just like your red boots.

Perfect.

Hmm.

What's the next color in a rainbow?

How's your painting coming along?

Max?

[Sighs]

Max, where do you think you're going?

- Backyard.

- Boots off.

And this time, no wiggling.

Now, let's take off your rain hat.

Thanks, max.

Come on, max.

Let go of your hat.

Ow.

[Gasps]

Now I remember.

Orange is the next color in the rainbow.

- [Sighs]

- Come on.

Let's paint.

It's a good thing I waited a bit

Before I painted the orange stripe.

Otherwise, the colors would have mixed.

And we want our rainbows to be perfect, don't we?

It's lucky I remembered that orange is the next color

In the rainbow.

There.

How are you doing with your rainbow, max?

Max?

[Sighs]

Not again.

Max.

- Backyard.

- We can't play in the backyard.

It's raining.

Besides we have to finish our rainbow paintings for grandma.

Boots off.

Now your hat.

No hat tricks this time.

Now toss me your raincoat.

Max!

[Gasps]

Your raincoat is yellow.

That's the next color in the rainbow.

I'm a color genius!

Smack!

Good for you, max.

You're almost halfway to a rainbow.

Now it's my turn to paint a yellow stripe.

Perfect.

Grandma will love it.

But what color comes next?

Hmm.

Is it pink?

No, that's not right.

Is it lilac?

No, it's not lilac either.

Oh, we have to figure this out

So we can finish painting our rainbows.

Huh?

Not again.

- Backyard!

- Ooh!

Look at that beautiful rainbow!

What luck!

Now I can see the right order of the colors.

Green, blue,

Dark blue, and purple!

Now we can finish our paintings.

[Doorbell rings]

Grandma!

- Hello, ruby.

Oh, hello, max.

My, that was quite a rainstorm we had.

- Look, grandma.

We painted these just for you.

- Oh, those are the most beautiful paintings of rainbows

I've ever seen.

And you got the colors just right.

How did you do it?

- It was easy.

We just looked at a real rainbow.

- Rainbow?

Where do you see a rainbow?

- Backyard!

[Birds twittering]

- Look, louise.

The first robin of spring.

- I see it.

Welcome back, robin.

- We're building the perfect birdhouse for you.

Oh, no.

- Aw, don't fly away.

- Maybe she's gone to tell all her friends about our birdhouse.

[Laughter]

We better get started.

Both: perfect.

- Hi, max.

It's springtime.

Do you know what that means?

It means the birds are coming back home.

And we're making a birdhouse for them to build their nest in.

Max?

Would you like to help?

- Hungry.

- Oh, you want something to eat first?

Well, okay.

I guess the birds can wait

At least until I make you a sandwich.

You see, max, in the winter,

A lot of the birds fly south to stay warm.

And in the spring when it's warm again here,

They fly back to find their perfect place

To build nests for their eggs.

So louise and I are making the perfect birdhouse for them.

- And that's how we're going to get

Our critter construction merit badge.

- Hungry.

- Here, max.

One peanut butter sandwich just the way you like it.

- [Whispers] hungry.

- So how are we doing, louise?

Are all the walls up?

- Not yet.

This is harder than it looks.

- Well, the first rule of every good builder

Is to read the instructions.

- Good idea, ruby.

- It says to connect walls "a" and "b"

To front and back panels "c" and "d."

Hmmm.

Okay, I've got "a" and "b."

- And I've got "c" and "d."

- And it looks like they go together

Like this.

- It's working!

- Because a bunny scout...

Both: always figures it out.

- Hungry.

- Okay, you can have some berries.

Now we can finally finish our birdhouse.

- [Whispers] hungry.

- Okay, now where were we?

- I'm holding "a," "b," "c," and "d" together.

- Oh, sorry, louise.

Okay, let's attach them to the floor.

- It worked.

We have a birdhouse.

- Well, we almost have a birdhouse.

We can't forget the roof.

- Hungry!

- Max, how can you still be hungry?

You've already had a peanut butter sandwich and berries.

- Hungry?

- Okay, here's some sunflower seeds.

That'll keep max busy for a while.

Good work, louise.

You put the roof on.

- Yup, it's all put together.

- Now we just have to paint it.

- When bunny scout leader sees our birdhouse,

She might give us two badges,

One for building and one for painting.

[Giggling]

- Hungry.

- Okay, okay.

I've never seen you this hungry before.

Here you go, max.

And remember, nice and quiet for the birdies, right?

Thanks, max.

So is our birdhouse ready?

- Not yet.

We have to put the perch on.

It's like a welcome mat for the birds.

Wow.

- Our birdhouse is beautiful.

- I can't wait to hear our first visitors singing.

- Me too.

Let's hang it from the apple tree.

I've got some string here to tie to the hook.

Huh?

That's funny.

I'm sure I put a spool of string on the table.

- Mm, it's not under here.

- Maybe on the counter.

[Toy siren wailing]

Max!

Remember not to make too much noise.

That'll scare away the birds.

If I can just find that string.

Now, where could it be?

This ribbon will do the trick.

- It's much prettier than string, ruby.

- You're right, louise.

- Do you think a family of birds

Will come and live in our birdhouse right away?

- There's only one way to find out.

This looks like the perfect branch

For our perfect birdhouse.

- How do you know it's the perfect one?

- It's the only one we can reach.

- [Giggles]

Good point.

- Wow.

Now all we have to do is wait and see who moves in.

[Giggling]

- Oh.

- Oooh. I can't wait.

- Me neither.

Maybe we're scaring them.

- I know. Let's watch from inside.

They might come if they don't see us.

- Good thinking, ruby.

I don't see any birds yet.

- I'm sure they'll come.

Why don't we have a glass of lemonade while we wait?

- Good idea.

- Glasses?

- Coming right up.

Building the perfect birdhouse

Has made me perfectly thirsty.

[Giggling]

[Toy siren wails]

- Oh, no.

Do you hear what I hear?

- Hungry!

- Quick.

We've got to stop max before he scares away our bird family.

Max, you'll frighten the birds.

- Ruby, wait.

Look.

Our birds.

They're here.

[Twittering]

- The birds didn't come just because they need a new home.

They also came because they were...

- Hungry.

- There you go, little flowers.

Here's some water to help you grow big and beautiful.

- Mudpie!

[Splooshing]

- I want you to look your best because grandma's coming over.

And there's nothing grandma loves more

Than a garden full of beautiful flowers.

[Giggles]

- Mudpie!

- Max?

[Gasps]

Max.

[Giggles]

Grandma's coming in a little while.

She said she has a yummy surprise for us.

- Mudpie!

[Squishy clapping]

- Oh, no, you don't.

You can't make a mudpie now.

We'd better get you cleaned up before grandma gets here.

[Giggles]

Oh, yuck.

[Sighs]

Come on.

Whatever you do, don't touch anything.

Okay, straps down.

Now, hands up.

Wiggle out of those mucky overalls.

All right, now let's find your face under all that muck.

Eww.

That's disgusting.

You want to see how dirty your face was?

Now give me those mucky hands.

All right,

Now let's get you into some clean clothes

Before grandma gets here with her yummy surprise.

Hurry, max.

There.

That's much better.

Now we have to go outside and get the backyard ready.

- [Sighs]

Let's see.

What else do we need to do?

Oh, the birdbath is empty.

[Twittering]

[Spigot squeaks]

There.

Grandma loves to watch the birds splash and play in the birdbath,

And so do i.

- Mudpie!

[Splooshing]

- Oh, this won't do.

The birdbath is all dirty.

We don't want the birds taking a bath in dirty water, do we?

Hoooo!

There, that's better.

[Twittering]

[Giggles] coming right up.

Will you hand me the hose, please, max?

- Mudpie!

- Huh?

Oh, no.

[Sighs]

Okay, max.

Upstairs we go again.

You can't look like that when grandma gets here.

- [Sighs]

- Give me your hands.

We have to hurry, max.

I still have to put some things out before she comes.

Hands up.

Wiggle out of your pants.

Now give me your hands.

Oh, yuck.

Come on, max.

- [Sighs]

- You look much better now.

Let's see...

What was I going to do?

Oh, of course.

I was going to put this tray out

So we're all ready for grandma's yummy surprise.

Come on, max.

And try to stay clean this time.

There we go.

Doesn't it look pretty, max?

- Mudpie!

- I told you, max,

This is no time for mudpies.

Oh, I nearly forgot to pour water in the water glasses.

Grandma loves water.

Did you know you're supposed to drink eight glasses of water

Every day, max?

- [Sighs]

- Water's very, very good for you.

Oh.

I'll go fill it up

In case grandma wants a second glass of water.

Remember, it's your job to stay clean, okay, max?

Thanks.

- Mudpie.

- There.

Now grandma can have as much water as she likes.

[Gasps]

Max, did you drink all three glasses of water?

- Mudpie.

- [Sighs]

What have you done now?

[Gasps]

Oh, no.

[Chuckles] look at you.

I thought I asked you to stay clean.

[Sighs]

All right, max, one more time.

I just hope we can get you cleaned up

Before grandma gets here.

You can't look like this

When she brings her yummy surprise.

Oh...

Oof!

Oh, no.

Look at me.

I look even worse than you.

Oh, this is terrible.

Come on, max.

If we hurry we can both get cleaned up

Before grandma gets here.

Let's go.

- Yoo-hoo!

Max!

Ruby!

- Oh, too late.

Hi, grandma.

- Oh, I see you're all ready for my yummy surprise.

- All ready?

All messy, you mean.

- Yes, that's perfect.

- [Gasps]

Grandma?

- This special treat can get kind of messy,

So it's always a good idea

To wear clothes that are already dirty.

- Really?

What's the treat?

- It's my double fudge chocolate pie.

Or as I like to call it...

- Mudpie!
