[chattering in French]

[Susie Orbach on phone]
So, how is everything going over there?

[Diana sighs] A little mad, if I'm honest.

Well, this morning,
he came with a poem he'd written for me.

Like him, it was very sweet.

But slightly misjudged.

Completely over the top.

He even had it engraved
on a silver plaque.

[chuckles softly]

Yes. Everything rhymed.

"Love" and "dove," I think.

Right.

There may have even been
"ocean" and "potion."

Oh dear.

He's been in LA dealing with
the breakup of his engagement,

where things have got really unpleasant.

I know. It's been all over the news.

Well, she's suing him, apparently.

And the press are on our tails constantly,
which means one can never relax.

{an }But despite all that, he's never anything
other than adorable to me.

{an }Making sure everything's perfect.
Taking care of me.

And I can see
how intoxicating that must be,

but is this really taking care of yourself
in the way we've been discussing?

We've been working on weaning you
from your addiction to drama.

- [phone ringing]
- [Dodi in Arabic] Hi, baba.

I know.

- [Mohamed] How is our special guest?
- [Dodi] She seems happy.

Sunbathing on deck.

[Mohamed] Good.

Now you just have to close her
and put a ring on her finger.

[chuckles]

Give me a chance. It's still early days.

Then let me spell out what is at stake.

If you were to marry this girl,

overnight you would become a giant.
A colossus.

You will have money and power
beyond your wildest dreams.

And you would finally be my equal.

Your equal? [chuckles]

Really?

How?

Because I would make you my partner.
In everything.

The whole company.

You've never offered that before.

You never deserved it before!

[Susie in English] Let's face it,
this is just drama again.

Drama is adrenalin. Addictive.

And, in many ways,
the opposite of adult behavior.

And all the things you've been telling me
about the Al Fayed men,

well, that Dodi is sweet enough...

[Diana] He really is. He's very sweet.

But a little lost too.

And caught up in an unhealthy dynamic
with his father.

Definitely. Definitely.

Are these really
people you should be close to?

People you should even know?

The risk is,

one normalizes the abnormal

and becomes accustomed
to living in the madness.

And that's when things really go wrong.

I know.

[Mohamed in Arabic] Marrying her would
eclipse everything I have ever achieved.

The Ritz in Paris. Harrods. Everything.

And don't all sons
want to eclipse their fathers?

This is your chance. Don't waste it.

[phone beeps off]

[in English] I'll have my secretary
book me a flight back as soon as possible.

Good.

- Let's get you back home where you belong.
- [paparazzi] Diana!

Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye. Bye. Bye.

- [sighs]
- [phone snaps shut]

[paparazzi shouting from afar] Diana!

[theme music playing]

[seabirds calling]

- [knock at door]
- [door opening]

[door shuts]

Shopping?

And ice cream?

Really?

Come on! It's Monte Carlo.

- It'll be fun.
- It won't be fun.

It'll be photographers and crowds.
Please can we just stay in and be cozy?

There's something I need to tell you.

There's something
I need to say to you too.

We can do it over stracciatella. Come on.

- [door opens and closes]
- [sighs deeply]

There you go, just mind.

- Thanks.
- [Kez chattering]

- Everyone in?
- [Trevor] Yeah, let's go.

- It'll be fine.
- Mm-hmm.

[boat engine revving]

- [indistinct chatter]
- [light music playing]

[group chattering excitedly]

[Trevor] This is it.
This is where I was thinking.

Uh, what kind of ice creams
would everyone like?

- Vanilla.
- Vanilla?

- Pistachio.
- Vanilla. Pistachio.

[overlapping chatter]

[man whistles]

What was that?

- What?
- What was that?

I said I'll make sure
we aren't here for long.

- [Diana] That one.
- [Dodi] This one? You sure?

[chuckling]

- [all shouting]
- [giggling]

[Dodi] Come on! You won?

[chattering in French]

[Dodi] There are two things
I wanted to apologize for.

Just down here.

[Dodi] First, the whole Kelly situation.

I would never have guessed
she would go so...

[scoffs]

Yeah, well, take it from me,
it's pretty upsetting

knowing the man you love
might have feelings for someone else.

Although I never realized you could sue
someone for falling out of love with you.

That... that's new.

To be fair,
I said she should give up work.

So,

she lost a lot of money in earnings.

I also wanted to, uh...

apologize...

if I've been a little weird myself.

- Have I?
- Maybe a little stressed.

I'm a shy,

private person.

And I've hated seeing my life
play out in the newspapers.

Not to mention
the insults and the prejudice.

"Dump the oily love rat"?

"Why can't Di find a nice English boy?"

I'm sorry.

You know, it's been getting worse
for me too.

They make like they're your friend,
and they write insult after insult anyway.

Makes me wanna just move away.

Start afresh.

Move to another country. Somewhere like...

California.

[chuckles lightly]

Exactly.

- Oh my God!
- [Diana] Away from England anyway.

Somewhere where one can actually be free.

Sit under a tiny tree

with a boy that you like,
eating ice cream.

- Diana, may we please take a picture?
- One picture, please.

- Oh God, here we go.
- Let's go.

- Give us a kiss, Diana.
- Okay, step back, please.

Everyone, step back.

- We love you! Please, Diana!
- Everyone, step back!

[all clamoring]

- [Trevor] Let's go.
- [Kez] Everyone, step back!

[man in crowd] Go! Go!

- Diana!
- Diana!

[tense music playing]

- You open?
- [man] Yes, sir.

- Go!
- In here. We'll be safer in here.

Follow Trevor.

- [woman speaking French]
- [Dodi] Bonsoir.

- Is everyone okay?
- Is everything okay?

[Dodi speaks French]

- We need to lock the front doors.
- Frédéric.

- Are you okay, sir?
- Yeah, fine.

- Gonna stay here.
- It's a pleasure to have you here.

- Please.
- We need to get them out.

Yes, of course. We have a door
at the back. We will look for the key.

Can you open that, please?

Trevor, what's going on?

- We're gonna hold here for two secs.
- Feel like I'm gonna burst into tears.

There are worse places to be trapped
than a jewelry shop. [chuckles]

- Have we lost them?
- For now.

Is there anything here you like?
Anything at all?

- [chuckles]
- [Trevor] Where does that lead?

No, there's nothing I need.

There must be something you like.

I mean, that's quite nice. [chuckles]

This one?

- [man] Diana!
- [crowd shouting]

- [Kez] Let's go.
- [Trevor] We need to go. Let's go.

- [cameras clicking]
- [woman] Diana!

- [Kez] Dodi.
- [Diana] Dodi.

[Kez] Mr. Dodi, sir. We need to go.

[clamoring outside continues]

Mr. Dodi, sir, now!

Now, sir!

[clamoring continues]

This way. Just down here.

That's Diana.

Huh?

- Got it. Yours.
- Cheers.

- Can we move quickly, please?
- [Trevor] Yeah.

Let's get going.

- Diana!
- Diana!

Okay, guys, go.

[paparazzi] Diana!

Oh, come on.

Diana, please!

[paparazzi continue shouting]

Diana!

- Diana!
- [cameras clicking]

- You okay?
- [sighs]

- [Dodi] Here you go.
- [Diana] Thank you.

[Dodi sighs]

Well, that was fun.

- I'm sorry.
- [chuckles] No.

My fault.

Hardly the best way
of spending our last night together.

- What?
- [inhales sharply]

Well, that's what
I've been trying to tell you.

I need to go home tomorrow.

Got work things to prepare for,
plus the boys are coming back to London.

So my secretary's getting me on
a BA flight tomorrow morning.

You can't go on a normal flight.
You're gonna fly back in our jet.

I really don't mind
flying on a normal plane.

Come on.

I wouldn't hear of it.

I just need to run it by my dad.

[Mohamed in Arabic]
Going home? Already? Why?!

What happened?

She needs to work.

Is everything okay?

Everything is more than okay.
I took her shopping.

Mm-hmm.

She picked a ring.

What kind of ring?

- A gold star.
- Mm-hmm.

Covered in diamonds.

Mm-hmm.

From a collection called Dis-Moi Oui.

Oh my God!

He sh**t, he scores!!

- It's an engagement ring!
- I don't know.

Of course it's an engagement ring!
Dis-Moi Oui means "Say yes to me."

[Mohamed laughing]

My son, you're a closer!!

You're a Fayed!!

Is she wearing it now?

I need a picture.

I haven't got it yet.

I rang the store after we left.

[in English] They didn't have it in stock.

[in Arabic] They have it
in their Paris branch.

Then take her to Paris.

I would, but she wants to go home.

No.

Take her to Paris
and put the ring on her finger.

This is the greatest day of my life!!

I knew you would do it.

My son!!

My Fayed son!!

Bye.

Bye.

- [kisses, chuckles]
- [phone beeps]

[line disconnects]

[phone snaps shut, beeps]

[exhales deeply]

[phone clatters]

He's agreed.

We can use the jet.

But if you don't mind,
we'll stop in Paris first.

What? Why?

Mm, there's something I have to do.

It's just one night.

All right.

But I need to find time to phone the boys.

- Of course.
- I'm missing them terribly.

Yeah.

I'm sure.

[birds chirping]

A ridiculous thing
for him to have said and done, I thought.

Well, who paid for it?

Well, not me. That's all I care about.

Oh, Margot!

What about a picnic today?

- Up at Glen Muick.
- [Queen Mother] What a lovely idea!

- Do you think that one's all right?
- Hmm?

[Anne] He looks a bit forlorn to me.

Then again, so would I
if my mother's private life

had been splashed all over the press.

Yes, well, that's the difference
between your mother and his.

[Charles] Toys have been passed on
from generation to generation.

We ought to get him
outside a bit more, hmm?

Out of his own thoughts.

What about...?

Hmm?

Think about it.

Charles was when he got his first.
I was ?

At , William is long overdue.

Might be just the ticket.

Can you pass the salt?

[pilot] We've just started
our final descent to Paris-Le Bourget.

The team on the ground have radioed to say

there are
a number of photographers waiting,

but they will do their best
to whisk you through arrivals quickly.

Twenty minutes to landing,

- [ringing continues]

[Dodi] Hi.

[in Arabic] So,

have you done it?

Have you asked her?

Have you made my dreams come true?

[in English] I have.

I'm glad you called.

Because... [chuckles]

...I have good news.

Exciting news.

[in Arabic] You do?

Tell me.

[in English] An agreement
was indeed reached

between two people tonight.

[Mohamed] Mm-hmm.

[Dodi sighs]

- [phone beeps]
- [dial tone]

Hello?

[in Arabic] Are you there?

[soft music plays]

[in English] But there will be
no engagement nor wedding.

The princess and I will remain friends,
but no more.

And if you wanna cut me off
for letting you down or being a failure,

whatever you wanna call it, go ahead.

Cut me off.
It'll be a blessing, but let me say this.

I love you.

But it's k*lling me
trying to be the person

you need me to be
to feel good about yourself.

If you cannot accept me for who I am,

it's better we no longer see one another.

[Dodi inhales sharply]

[exhales shakily]

Goodbye.

- [phone snaps shut]
- [sniffs]

[exhales]

[sniffs]

[sighs, chuckles]

[sniffs, chuckles]

[exhales forcefully]

[Diana clapping]

[Dodi sighs]

[music fades out]

[Dodi sniffs]

[chuckles softly]

Look.

I'm shaking. [exhales]

[sniffs]

[chuckles softly]

[sniffs]

Hey.

You're really special.

I hope you know that.

Now...

where do you wanna stay tonight?

Here?

Or at my apartment?

I think the flat.

All my things are there.

Okay.

[sniffs]

[sighs] Trevor.

We've decided to go back to my apartment.

- I'd advise against that, sir.
- Just do as I say.

- Sir, it's mad out front.
- Just do as I say, please.

The photographers all know
the cars we came in.

We'll send the same cars out the front,

and the princess and I will go
in a third car and leave via the back.

Get someone to deal
with the photographers.

I'll call the night manager
and sort the car.

[Dodi exhales]

[sniffs] Mm.

[water trickling]

[Balmoral maid] Back to London tomorrow?

Yeah.

[Balmoral maid] Looking forward
to seeing Mummy?

Mm-hmm.

- [Balmoral maid] Okay.
- [zipper closes]

All done.

- [Harry] Thank you.
- Good night.

[knocking at door]

Come in.

[door opens]

Mm. [spits]

- Would you like me to pack for you?
- [William] Ah. Already done it, thanks.

- Oh, well, I'm out of a job, then.
- [both chuckle]

Good night, William.
And congratulations again for today.

Oh, thank you, Milly.

[gentle piano music playing]

[bartender in French]
Are you smoking that or...?

[Henri] No, I'm looking after it.

[bartender] Okay.

- Cigars are in fashion.
- [Henri] Do you want it?

[bartender] No, I quit.

- [Henri] You'd enjoy it, though.
- Yes.

- Next week maybe.
- Mm-hmm.

[speaking French]

Henri, plans have changed.

Mr. Dodi needs you to drive.

Right away.

[Henri] Okay.

Put it on my tab.

[bartender speaks French]

[indistinct chattering in French]

In ten minutes.

They'll be out in ten minutes.

[overlapping chatter in French]

[all chuckling quietly]

- [Trevor in English] Madness.
- [chuckling]

[Diana] Absolutely.

Yeah.

You okay?

Yeah.

I have to confess something.

Mm-hmm.

- The phone call to my father.
- Mm-hmm.

- The things I said.
- Mm-hmm.

He didn't hear a word.

I know.

[chuckles softly]

- You know?
- Mm-hmm.

[chuckles softly]

[somber music builds slowly]

You'll find the courage to tell him soon.

- I will, you know.
- Mm-hmm.

[door opens]

- I really will.
- I know.

- [chuckles softly]
- [footsteps approaching]

- [Dodi in French] Everything okay, Henri?
- Yes.

Are Philippe and Jean-François
out doing what I asked?

Yes, they're out front
doing the diversion.

[Dodi] Okay.

No one will see us leave.

Trust me.

Good.

- [in English] What'd he say?
- We're okay.

[door shuts]

[both chuckle lightly]

[somber music continues]

[man speaks French]

[whistling tune]

[brakes squeak]

[speaking in French]

[exhales softly]

[in English] Okay. Let's go.

[somber music continues]

[in French] Don't try following us.
You'll never catch us.

- [man speaks French]
- Piss off.

- [door opens]
- [paparazzi shouting]

- [cameras clicking]
- [overlapping shouts]

[man ] Diana! There's Diana!

[paparazzi shouting]

[exhales deeply]

[man ] Come on, look at us! Come on!

[man ] Diana, a picture!

[Dodi] You okay?

Yeah, okay.

- [Dodi in French] Ready. Let's go.
- Yes. Okay.

[paparazzi shouting indistinctly]

Come on. Let's go. Let's get out of here.

[engine turns over]

- [tires squeal]
- [paparazzi shouting]

[cameras clicking]

[scooter engines revving]

[shouting continues]

[overlapping indistinct shouts]

[somber music playing]

[engine revving]

[tires squealing]

- [crashing]
- [debris clattering]

[car horn droning]

[somber music playing]
