01x07 - Brain Drain

Post by bunniefuu »

- He's been in there for days.

He's not acting normal.

Even when he does come out,
he barely speaks.

- It could be anything.

Why do we need to assume
something weird is going on

Just because...

- Uh...

Hey, brainy, we need to talk.

- Go away!

- We're starting to get
a little worried about you.

- Nothing to worry about.

Everything's fine here.

[Straining] totally fine. Unh!

- Brainy?

Computo, override lock.

- What is this thing?

- If you must know,

It's a containment chamber.

- Nothin's gettin' out of here
without a fight.

- What on earth's it for?

- Me.

[Theme music playing]

[Machine starting]

- Okay, brainy,
what's goin' on?

- Computo, display
video file tk-421.

Every third solar cycle,

Kaluans undergo the alignment.

No matter where
we are in the galaxy,

Our intelligence is uploaded

And shared
with every other kaluan.

For normal kaluans,

The alignment
is a painless process.

But since
I've separated myself

From the kaluan hive mind,

It's different for me.

Without the collective
to provide balance,

I'll have little control
over myself.

For 10 hours,
I will be unpredictable,

Aggressive,
and quite possibly incoherent.

- That ought to be good
for a laugh.

- Why would you keep
something like this from us?

- This is my first alignment
without the collective.

What may happen
could be...embarrassing.

- Brainy, we're your friends.

You don't have to
go through this alone.

[Beeping]

- It's starting.

I need you all
to promise me something.

No matter what happens
or how much I beg,

Do not let me out.

I could be a danger
to myself

And to you.

- We promise.

Brainiac: aah!

Ehh! Aah!

Ohh!

Where's my cocoa! Aah!

[Humming happily]

I alone am braniac 5!

- Alignment complete.

[Humming]

- Well, if this thing is over,

Why is he still
acting weird?

- He said it was
his first time.

Maybe this is normal.

- Warning... Synaptic dispersion
exceeding recommended levels.

- That doesn't sound normal.

- Let me out!
Something's wrong!

I can feel... Aah ha ha!

- Computo, scan the pod.

What's going on?

- Microfissures detected
in the power relays.

Overload imminent.

- He's in trouble!

- Aah!

Brainy, are you okay?

- This wasn't
supposed to happen.

Unh!

Ants! I've got ants
in my head!

Oh, they tickle.

[Giggling]

[Giggling]

- His neuro-pathways
are degrading.

If we can't undo this,

He'll go off-line...
Permanently.

- Computo, how do we stop it?

- Exposure to a high dose
of zunium radiation
will reverse the effect.

- Ooh! I like his pants.

- Just tell me where to get it.

- Zunium is the rarest substance
in the galaxy,

Found only
in one location.

- Zune.

- Red ants!

Red ants?!

Superman shouldn't
play with red ants.

- It's the most inhospitable
planet in the galaxy.

The only way
to get there fast enough,

Is an unstable
trans-matter gate.

- You know a lot
about this place.

- I should.

I grew up there.

- Then you'll lead the mission.

- I got 3 tons of goop here,
but I got no waiver.

I need that waiver
before you pick it up.

You got me?

What do you want?

- We need to use
the transporter to zune.

It's an emergency.

- That place?

What's your cargo?

- Us.

- Ha ha ha ha!

- You think that's funny?
I've got a joke for you.

When do we have to be there?

Real zune! Get it!

Ha ha ha ha! Ohh!

- You know that gate's
not for people.

- Yes, we know.

We're in a bit
of a hurry.

- Gate 11, and here,
you might need one of these.

We don't call it
"old chompy" for nothin'.

Ow.

Ow.

Ow, ow, ow!

- It's like dealing
a 3-year-old venusian wiggler.

- How does this thing work?

- You walk through this...

And end up on zune.

Hopefully.

- Last time I went
through this thing,

I lost my tail.

Kidding.

Here goes.

I'm through.

- Guess it's my turn.

Wish me luck.

What should we do
with your parts

If old chompy
scrambles you up?

- You're not helping.

Good luck.

Timber wolf: he's through.

A little gate-sick,
but he's all here.

Send brainy through.

- I don't wanna go!

I've decided
I don't trust machines,

Especially not this one!

It doesn't like me!
I can tell!

- Come on, b-5,
think of all the delicious
zunium over there.

- He's not going
to eat it.

Did you pay attention at all?

- Ooh...ahh!

No, no, no, no, no!

Aah!

- Brainy?

How do you feel?

- I feel like dancing.

- That might be a problem.

- No!

- That's not
the only problem.

Unh!

I've lost my powers.

- I don't know what happened.

As soon as I stepped
through that gate,

I just felt...normal.

- Too much red.

- You're lucky
these spare suits were here.

Normal doesn't
do well on zune.

- ♪ Yellow! Yellow! ♪

- It's not too late
to go back.

- Magic did this to me, too,
remember?

Maybe it was the gate.

Maybe it's this place.

All I know is
brainy needs my help.

I'm staying.

- Here. This will
monitor his status.

We've got less than an hour.

- You know
what we really need?

Soup!

- Ohh! Why don't you
hold him?

- His head
went through fine,

But his body's
kind of...missing.

- I had my money
on the furry one.

This is depot prime.

We got a chop job...

Robot kid
probably actin' nutty.

No head.

- [Robot speaking
alien language]

- Hey, it's your lucky day.

Gate 35.

- Welcome to zune.

- This is where you grew up?

- Explains a lot, doesn't it?

- Superman, green rocks
k*lled the last sun.

Oh, there's red, blue,
gold, purple.

Did you know
there are 4,000...

- If we don't
keep him quiet,

We're gonna get...

They're miners.

Better let me handle this.

Alright, we're not...

- Rrrr!

- They seem friendly.

- The air is toxic.

Breathing it causes mutations.

[Mutants growling]

- Ow!

- Come on, superman!
Give 'em the business!

- Unh!

- Ohh!

- Ha ha ha!

- Alright,
hand over the head

And no one gets hurt.

- Heh heh heh heh!

- Rarr!
- Hah!

[Hissing]

Brainiac: oh! Unh!

Ohh! No!

- Give me that back.

- My nose ring. Whoa!

- Huh!

- Run!

- Aah!

- We need to make it
to that elevator.

- [Panting]
these suits are heavy.

- You've got a flight ring.

- Huh! Never had
to turn it on before.

- Superman! Catch!

- Ahh! Oh, uh!

- Hah!

[Mutants growling]

Go! Keep moving!

- Let's go swimming.

- Let's just get you
to that lift.

- Welcome to diaphus 3.

I'm your guide-bot 2.9,

Your host for this tour.

The towers of diaphus 3

Are a true wonder
of the cosmos.

Each tower is extremely fragile
and could come crashing down

With the slightest touch.

Please, no touching,
sensing, or probing.

[Thud, towers cracking]

Oh, dear!

Oh, my! The towers!

No running! Aah!

Stay away!

- Of all the places
in the galaxy,

It had to end up here.

Part of the tour!

[Mutants growling,
timber wolf straining]

- No!

[Mutants growling]

- Rr-aah!
- Uhh!

Ugh!

- Yah!

- Security!
Where's security?!

- We need to reason with it.

- Reason?

It doesn't have a head.

I'll see if I can
short-circuit him.

See? Mission accomplished.

Ohh! Ahh!

- Impressive.

Brainy, if there's anything
of you in there,

I need you to stop
what you're doing

And listen to me.

I think I'm getting
through to him.

- Security! We have
a situation here!

- Well, it was worth a try.

Any other brilliant ideas?

- Read my mind.

- There's hope for you yet.

[Crash]

- Timber wolf?

[Mutants moaning]

- He's doomed. We all are.

Ooh, want to hear a joke?

- Not now, brainy.

[Boom]

You did it!

- Surprised?

- Where are we going?

- Without your powers
to get us inside,

The zunian vault
is out of the picture.

- Great. So now what?

- I smell puppies.

- We'll need an active mine.

There's only one place left
on the planet to find one...

The core.

Follow me.

[Machine moving]

- I hear something!

- Blech! You taste like socks.

- What was that thing?

- Mining robot.

They're the only things
that can survive down here.

We won't have much time,

Even in the suits.

Mine-bots were created
to be disposable.

Makes them a little irritable.

- I'll be sure
to stay away from them.

- That may not be an option.

- There's the mine.

Move!

- Ohh, aah, aah!

Ohh!

- Aah! Ugh!

- Ugh! Uh!

- Raah!
- Aah!

- Whoa!

- Ohhhhhh!

Oh! Ow! Ooh!

[Mine-bots scratching at door]

- Oh. This is good.

- Brainiac 5!

- Mow! Oh! Ooh! Oh!

Woo! I want to play
spider, too!

- Unh!

Superman: get off him!

I may not have my powers,

But this is almost as fun.

Where's brainy?

- Yeah...about that.

- Brainy, where are you?!

- Now, that just looks
plain weird.

- Come on, brainy.

We need to get you
to that cave.

- Aw, I hate caves.

Wait a minute.
I've got legs again.

I can dance!

[Humming]

[Beeping]

- He's reaching critical,
superman.

- [Humming]

- Aah! My beautiful towers!
Please!

Running, jumping, pushing,
and battle modes

Are expressly prohibited!

- Ready?

- Please, somebody do something!

- Well, what do you know?

It worked.

- Course, it did.

It was my idea.

- Thank you
for visiting diaphus 3.

I hope you enjoyed your tour.

Come again soon.

- [Laughing] oh! Oh!

Ohh!

- Huh? Ugh!

Uh-ahh! Aah!

- Uh! Uh! Aah! Uh!

- Uh...aah!

Braniac 5, listen to me!

If we don't get you
into that cave right now,

We're going to lose you!

- Whoo-hoo!

No, wait. That's bad.

I'm confused.

- Go! I'll hold the rest off!
Uhh!

- No! Big, scary space lobster,
trying to eat me!

Eat my brains!

- Hold still, brainy!

It's for your own good!

Aah!

Aah...ugh!

- Last sun is my friend.

- My suit!

- Can't stop,
dwell level 9...

I am braniac...5.

- Don't give up, brainy.

We're going to make it.

There it is.

The zunium.

-Superman.
Superman, wake up.

- Brainy, are you...?

- I'm fine.

It seems I'm missing something.

[Short-circuiting]

- Uhh!

[Superman groaning]

- You look terrible.

- Whew.

- Superman!

Are you alright?

- I think so.

- What about him?

- You'll be happy to know

I'm operating
at full capacity.

Well, almost full capacity.

I hope the rest of me
wasn't too much trouble.

- Nothing we couldn't handle.

- Thank you, superman.

If you hadn't been there with...

- Don't worry about it.

Besides, I have a way
you can make it up to me.

- You do? Anything.

- I need you
to help me figure out

Why I lost my powers
on zune.

- It's because
your powers only work

Under the light
of a yellow sun.

- You knew this?

Don't you think
you should be telling me

About things like that?

- No, I don't.

There are some things
you have to figure out
on your own, superman,

In your century.

- I guess you're right.

- It's hard, but that's
the way it has to be.

- I wonder what else
you haven't told me?
