"Dear Aunt Lucy,

I recently learned something new about marmalade.

Something rather surprising.

It all began when I was helping Mrs Bird

hang out the washing."

May I help you, Mrs Bird?

Oh, thank you, Paddington.

There are some socks in the basket you could peg up.

That seems easy enough.

"It was trickier than it looked."

[Gasps] Oh, let's get you down, wee cub.

You really are a rare sort of bear.

Thank you. Perhaps I should just pass the washing to you.

- Oh!

- [Buzzing]

Hold still now.

When you're stung by a bee, it's best to scrape out the stinger.

Squeezing it can make it worse.

Hmm. There.

[Contented sigh] All done.

Brave wee cub. I'll make you a nice marmalade sandwich.

Thank you, Mrs Bird.

I can't imagine why the bee stung me like that.

It's very sore indeed.

Oh, I know. But it was probably just scared.

It saw your paw coming towards it

and thought it would get squished.

Being scared is no reason to hurt someone.

Hmm. I don't think I like bees.

Oh, no, Paddington. Bees are wonderful creatures.

As long as you don't touch them,

you have nothing to fear from them.

You know Baaz keeps bees.

Oh, yes, he does!

Perhaps I should warn him about their stings.

[Buzzing]

Aaah! Oh!

You two are even more worried about stings than I am.

Do you always wear these to go near bees?

Absolutely, Pads.

Our hive is home to a lot of bees,

so we have to keep safe and not get stung.

This smoke will calm down the bees before we inspect it.

I don't think I'd like a pet that needed calming down

before I went near it.

Well, technically, they aren't quite pets, Pads.

[Coughing]

But perhaps a little too much smoke?

[Coughing]

- Oi!

- Aaah!

Will you stop spraying that smoke in the air?

I'm trying to weed these vegetables!

Sorry, Mr Curry!

OK, here we are.

So, bees store their honey in these wax honeycomb casings.

Look! You can see.

They've started to make honey from the nectar.

Oh! That's the sugary liquid inside flowers.

It's not ready for us to eat yet.

[Chuckles] That's right,

but in a few months there'll be loads of delicious honey inside.

Then we can take some and leave the rest for the bees to enjoy

over the colder months.

Oh, I think that one's poorly. It has a big spot on it.

Huh? Really?

Oh. OK.

We are in the presence of royalty.

Paddington, meet the queen.

- The queen?

- BAAZ: Yeah.

We mark her with a dot so that we can find her.

Oh, I had no idea that bees had queens.

You have a beautiful home, Your Majesty.

Good work, Queeny.

Oh! Hey, let's try some of last year's honey, shall we?

Thank you.

Mmm... Delicious!

Almost as good as marmalade.

They can't make that too, can they?

Not exactly, but they can help with growing oranges.

I don't understand. They're too small for gardening.

- How would they lift a trowel?

- They pollinate the plants.

You see, bees fly from plant to plant.

They collect pollen for the hive to eat and nectar to make honey.

As they fly about, the pollen is on their legs.

It mixes between the flowers, pollinating them

and helping them to make seeds and fruits.

If they didn't do that,

we wouldn't have enough food to eat.

So, without bees, there would be no orange trees...

And no marmalade.

I had no idea bees do so much for me.

I feel I've been rather ungrateful.

Should I write them a thank

-you card?

[Chuckling] That's a lovely thought, Pads,

but I think they'd appreciate some flowers even more.

You see, there are far fewer bees than there once were.

There just aren't enough flowers for them.

More and more people are using fake grass and meadows

- are being built on.

- I'm sure our bees

- had made more honey last year.

- I think you're right, Simi.

And I hope they make enough to last them through winter.

Well, we'll make sure they do.

The bees make it possible for me to have my marmalade.

The least I can do is help them to get their honey!

I'll grow them some wildflowers.

"Baaz gave us a large flower bed,

to make a wildflower bee garden.

Simi and I got straight to work."

Oh!

Now, this should keep the birds away.

Hanging above it, that should do the trick.

It works in my garden at home.

You know what?

For such a little area, it might be better than a scarecrow.

[Squawking]

"It was so exciting watching our seeds grow into little plants."

You two are doing an amazing job.

Thank you, Baaz.

- Oh, no!

- Gertrude! No, Gertrude.

Oh!

Come on, Gertrude! Walkies!

"We were always looking for new ways to improve the garden

and help the bees."

Ms Potts, what are these?

- The bees seem to love them.

- They're just dandelions.

- You're welcome to them.

- Thank you very much.

Baa!

I wish we didn't have to go home.

I think the rest of the flowers are finally about to open.

Yes, I think you're right.

I can't wait to see what they look like!

Let's get a good night's sleep

and get back here first thing tomorrow.

[Alarm goes off]

"So, the next morning,

I couldn't wait to get back to the farm

and see if our flowers were finally open."

[Gasps] I don't understand.

- Where are the flowers?

- I don't know.

- They've disappeared.

- They can't have just vanished,

- can they?

- I don't believe it.

- After all that work!

- But, without the flowers,

the bees won't make enough honey for winter.

The plants can't have just disappeared!

- You're welcome.

- Welcome? For what?

I weeded the plot for you.

I heard you were trying to grow something,

but it was full of weeds.

You'll never grow any vegetables with all those weeds in the way.

But that's what we were growing!

- Weeds?

- I must correct you, Mr Curry.

They weren't weeds. They were wildflowers.

The bees need them to last through the winter.

Well, they looked like weeds to me.

Clover, borage, knapweed, dandelion,

all the things I weed out of my garden.

Are you saying we used the wrong seeds?

No, I mean wildflowers, weeds.

They're all the same thing to me.

The same thing? Weeds and wildflowers?

Well, yes, weeds are just wild plants

- growing in the wrong place.

- Quick, Paddington.

I have an idea.

Uncle Baaz gave me this for growing my own plants.

I know it's silly,

but whenever anyone weeds the community garden,

I feel a bit sorry for the plants that are pulled up.

It's nottheirfault they're weeds,

and their flowers are so pretty!

So I bring them to my greenhouse.

I don't think that's silly at all, Simi. They're beautiful!

But what Mr Curry said made me think.

Aren't these just as pretty and good for the bees

as the other flowers would have been?

You're right! These are perfect for the bees!

Well done, Simi!

"So we got to work planting all of the little weeds

in our wildflower garden.

Even Mr Curry helped.

When we were done, the garden looked quite wonderful.

All of our friends also planted flowers,

because everyone can do something to help bees.

Even Mr Curry found himself thinking about bees.

I can't wait to see how much honey they produce next year,

Aunt Lucy. Oh! And if you happen to see any bees

in the orange trees of Peru, do thank them for me.

Love from Paddington."

"Dear Aunt Lucy,

it's been extremely warm here in London recently,

and not all the residents of Windsor Gardens

seem to be enjoying the heat.

As you know, I'm very used to it being hot,

having grown up in the jungle.

So, I decided to go outside and enjoy the sunshine."

Whoops!

Whoops.

[Faint moaning]

Oh! Morning, Mrs Bird.

- Do I know you?

- Mrs Bird, it's me, Paddington.

I know it's you, wee cub! I was joking!

[Laughs]

Oh, it's too hot to laugh.

Oh, you go ahead, wee bear. Enjoy the sun.

Righty

-ho, Mrs Bird.

- [Thud]

- Oh!

- Huh?

- Oh...

Mrs, Brown, whatever you're looking for in there,

you're not going to find it with your eyes shut.

I'm not looking for anything, Paddington.

Oh, I'm just trying to cool down!

Oh, I see.

I'd recommend the milk.

Ah!

Oh, it's so hot!

- Nice handkerchief, Mr Brown.

- Thank you, Paddington.

- Why is it on your head?

- Oh, it's a sunhat.

But why not just wear an actual sunhat?

Because, um...

- Aaah!

- Water b*mb!

Oh... Can we take a break?

- I'm boiling!

- Yeah, me too.

If this heatwave goes on for too long,

- I'm not sure how we'll cope!

- Oh, dear.

[Ice

-cream music]

[Gasps] Ice cream! Who wants ice cream?

ALL: Me please!

- Me too!

- Toq, don't be rude.

But if there is one going spare, yes, please.

I'll be right back with ice creams for everyone.

- Can I have one, Paddington?

- Oh, and me, please!

Ice cream! Come and get your ice cream!

Ahem! Excuse me!

Oh!

Sorry, Mr Curry.

- Eight, please, Mateo!

- I'm sorry, Paddington.

I've just sold the last ones.

Um, Mr Curry, do you really need that many?

Sorry, bear, but who knows how long this heatwave will last?

Besides, I love ice cream.

Oh, well that's a shame. Everyone is incredibly hot.

I'm sorry, Paddington. If it's any consolation,

those last ones were coffee flavoured.

Bleurgh! Coffee flavour?

Do you have any more back at the café?

No, sorry. We've run out of ingredients,

- so we can't make any more.

- Oh, maybe we have them

in our kitchen. You could make some here!

Great news about the ice creams everyone!

- It's ice

-cream time!

- No. There is none left.

Aw!

- But Mateo and I have a plan.

- Yay!

We're going to make some from scratch.

Aw...

So, ice cream. How much do you know?

I know it tastes good

and that if you eat it too fast you get a cold head.

But do you know how it's made?

Um... no.

My mum taught me how to make ice cream.

First thing we need to do is make the base.

We need to mix cream, milk and eggs.

Ah!

[Gasps] Oh... Oh...

Oh... Oh...

[Thud]

Oh, dear.

Um...

Ah!

Let's make ice cream!

And, next, we need to whisk that up.

- Would you like to do it?

- Oh, yes, please.

Whoa!

Whoops!

I'll... tidy up.

[Gasps] Aaah!

Aaah!

I'll get some more eggs.

Now we need to decide on a flavour.

Hmm, not coffee.

- Hazelnut?

- Oh, um...

Caramel?

Vanilla? No.

Chocolate? No.

Marmalade... ice cream?

Oh, well, maybe it's a silly idea.

Or... a brilliant idea. We won't know unless we try!

But we will need more marmalade.

No problem. There's always some in the marmalade cupboard.

Wow! That is a lot of marmalade!

I do get through rather a lot of it.

Hmm... six jars. Yep, that should be enough.

Huh? Where's all the... ?

I'm sorry. force of habit.

- Perhaps we should swap jobs.

- [Laughs] Agreed!

Paddington!

Hmm. I didn't even notice myself doing it.

Won't happen again. Promise.

It's OK. We've got enough.

Oh! Let's add some fresh oranges to make it extra tasty.

- Very impressive, Mateo.

- Thanks.

Your turn!

Oh, bother!

Mmm. Smells orangey.

How do we turn it into ice cream?

With this. We'll put the mixture in here.

It will stir it as it chills.

And then we'll pop it in the freezer to finish it off.

We have to pour the mixture in very carefully.

- Right.

- Would you like to?

I think you should do it.

How... long have we been out here?

Um....

I've no idea.

[Gasp]

Oh, thank goodness! A cloud!

Oh, dear.

Great news, everyone, Mateo and I have made the ice cream!

- At last!

- Thank you!

Oh, sorry, when I said "made" the ice cream, I meant,

we've put the ice

-cream mix in the ice

-cream machine.

- So, it still needs to freeze?

- Exactly.

[Sighs]

[Heavenly chorus]

- Wow!

- We need to do a taste test.

Mmm. What do you think?

I think...

it's possibly the greatest ice cream ever made!

[Gasp]

- Yes!

- Ice cream!

- Come and get your ice cream!

- Yay!

Ice cream!

Yay!

- Thank you.

- These are incredible!

Oh, now I'm cooling down!

Paddington, these are amazing!

Hmm. It's not coffee flavour, is it?

- It's marmalade flavour.

- Hmm.

Mmm. Oh, my good golly gosh.

Aaah!

"The marmalade ice creams were such a success

Mateo and I decided to share them with everyone

in Windsor Gardens.

They proved to be very popular.

And all went like "hot cakes," apparently."

Oh, thank you, Paddington.

My pleasure.

Can I ask, what flavour is this?

- Marmalade.

- Oh! Please tell me the recipe!

Well, you'll need marmalade.

Quite a lot of marmalade.

"Heatwaves don't last forever, Aunt Lucy,

but thankfully, for the rest of this one,

we have plenty of marmalade ice cream.

Love from Paddington."
