[THEME MUSIC]

-[SINGING] It's a beautiful
day in this neighborhood,

a beautiful day for a neighbor.

Would you be mine?

Could you be mine?

It's a neighborly day
in this beautywood,

a neighborly day for a beauty.

Would you be mine?

Could you be mine?

I have always wanted to have
a neighbor just like you.

I've always wanted to live
in a neighborhood with you.

So let's make the most
of this beautiful day.

Since we're together, we might
as well say, would you be mine?

Could you be mine?

Won't you be my neighbor?

Won't you please?

Won't you please?

Please, won't you
be my neighbor?

[SPEAKING] Hi, neighbor.

Here we are television,
neighbors again.

Glad to be with you.

I want you to see something.

Isn't that a beautiful plant?

That's called an
African violet plant.

Did you ever take a lot of
time to look at a flower?

Let's just take a
long look at these.

What do you think
when you look at them?

Some people think about
but the color, the shape,

or how big or small they are.

Some people even count the
petals on flowers or the leaves

or these little
things in the middle.

They're called pistils.

Some people make up
stories about the flowers,

pretending they're all part of
a neighborhood or one family,

living and growing together.

They even give
each flower a name.

If you had this plant
with these flowers,

what names would you give them?

Do you like to look at
something like this plant

really carefully?

If you do, that's one way
to know you're growing.

[SINGING] If you will look
carefully, listen carefully,

you will find a lot of things.

Carefully look and listen.

It's good to look
carefully, listen carefully.

That's the way you learn a
lot of things, carefully.

Look, look and listen.

Some things you
see are confusing.

Some things you
hear are strange,

but if you ask someone
to explain one or two,

you'll begin to notice
a change in you.

If you will look carefully,
listen carefully--

that's a way to keep
on growing carefully.

Look, look, look and listen.

[KNOCK AT DOOR]

-Oh, there's
somebody at the door.

I love looking at
things carefully.

Oh, it's Mr. McFeely.

Come in, Mr. McFeely.

-Speedy Delivery.

-Speedy Delivery?

I didn't order anything.

-I know you didn't, but
this is part of a surprise.

As a matter of fact--

-It's a bag!

-It's a bag.

-What's in it?

-Catch.

-What an
interesting-feeling ball!

-Well--

-What do you mean,
part of a surprise?

-The other part of the
surprise is outside.

-Oh, good!
-So let's give that--

-Can we do that?

-Yeah.

Right this way, right this way.

-See what goes with
the-- my goodness!

-Mr. Rogers, I'd like
you to meet Joanne Swain.

-Oh, I'm glad to
meet you, Joanne.

-I'm glad to meet you also.

-What a good juggler you are!

-Thanks.

-May I see you work
with those again?

-Sure!

-Look at that!

How in the world do you do--

-Just a lot of practice.

-Did you start to juggle
when you were a little girl?

-Yes, I started when
I was eight years old.

-Eight years old.

And how did you start, actually?

-I started with one ball.

-One?

-Yes.

Would you like to try one?

-I would!

Sure.

And what do you do with the one?

-You simply toss one
from hand to hand.

-And so that's the way
you begin to juggle, huh?

-Right.

-Good, Mr. McFeely!

-Excellent.

-There you go.

Speedy delivery.

-Speedy delivery to you.

-Here, I'll throw one to you.

-Thank you.

-Throw one to Joanne.

There you go.

-Oh!

Look, it started right away.

Why does Mr. McFeely
have some more?

-Well, I can also
juggle more than three.

-Oh.

-Would you like to see?

-Yeah!

-Well, Joanne, should I
just toss it your way?

-Sure, you could try that.

-All right.

Here we go.

-Oh!

-What an artist you are!

You were about to do
something with your foot.

-Right.

I was about to pick the
beanbag up with my foot.

-How do you do that?

-Like that.

-And that one, too.

-Back in circulation!

-Oh, my!

Can you imagine?

Don't you practice
a lot to do that?

-Yes, I do.

I practice as often as I can.

MR. MCFEELY: Do you
want to another one?

One more?

-You mean-- one, two,
three, four-- you do five?

-I could also do five.

-You tell me what I should do.

You'll start to those, and
I'll throw one into you?

-Actually, it would be easier
if you would just hand it to me.

-OK.

-After four, it's quite hard.

-OK, there you go.

-Now, you're holding
three in one hand and--

-And two in the other.

Right.

-Wow.

That is just amazing.

Wow!

That's wonderful!

-Thanks.

-Shall we try just one more?

-You have more?

-I have more.

-Why don't we try two more?

-Two more?

All right.

-Two more.

-Two more.

There you go.

-Thank you.

-That is seven.

-Four and three.

-Oh, Joanne!

Well, I'll stand back!

-That's the important thing--
that you just keep practicing,

isn't it?

-Right.

I can easily pick up a bean bag.

-Easily pick up a bean bag.

Good for you!

-Thank you.

-Well, thank you.

-I remember when she
couldn't juggle at all.

-Yes, you do.

-You remember when she was--

-A little girl.

But now, she's grown and
changed into a teenager

and can do many, many things.

-Well, do you
teach other people?

-Yes, I do.

-As a matter of fact, we're
on our way to the school.

She's doing a demonstration
and then teaching

some of the younger children.

-Good.

Just before you go, could I--

-Sure.

-I mean, you showed
me to do one-- but--

-Right.

You toss one up, wait for it to
peak, and toss the other one.

Exactly.

-You're the master.

-Well, we're on our
way to the school.

-Thank you very much for coming.

It was good to meet you, Joanne.
Thanks, Mr. McFeely.

-You're welcome!

Speedy delivery!

-Mr. McFeely with
more surprises.

He knows all of our neighbors.

I've gotta try this once more.

I think I have--
yeah, here's some.

It's not easy to do.

No, but let's have
some make-believe.

Here, Trolley.

Last time, we pretended that
there was a special package

there was to be delivered to
Purple Panda on Planet Purple,

and the interesting
thing about that package

was that it changed color if
you tossed it up in the air.

Also, it has three words
on it, and those words

are "do not open."

Imagine, a package that
says "do not open!"

Anyway, let's make-believe more
about that and other things

as the trolley goes into the
Neighborhood of Make-Believe.

-[WHISTLING]

-Hello, Trolley.

-[WHISTLING]

-Oh, I'm looking
carefully at this flower.

-[WHISTLING]

-No, there's nothing
wrong with it, I just--

[FANFARE]

-Here comes Daddy.

-Oh, well, Prince
Tuesday, I presume?

-Correct as usual, Daddy.

-And what are you doing
here in the garden?

-Oh, I'm looking at this flower.

-Oh.

Is that a school assignment?

-No, I just wanted to look
carefully at this flower.

-Why would you spend
your time doing that?

-I guess because it's
beautiful, Daddy.

-But the question
is, is it useful?

-There's just so
much to wonder about!

-Absolutely, son,
even for kings.

-Oh, here you are!

-Handyman Negri, I presume?

-Correct as usual, King Friday.

Hi, Tuesday!

-Hello, Mr. Negri.

-Were you looking
for me, Handyman?

-Yes, I was.

Your juggling teacher is
waiting for you in the J room.

-Very good.

There's always something
to juggle in this life.

Thank you, Handyman.

-Oh, you're welcome, sire.

-Oh, incidentally, Tuesday--

-Yes, daddy?

-Doe that flower like you
to look at it so carefully?

-Oh, I think it does.

-How do you know?

-Because it grows and changes
as I watch it carefully.

-Minutely?

-Exactly.

-Well, then there's some
perceived value, I guess.

So, I'm off to juggle.

Farewell.

-Farewell, King Friday.

-Goodbye, Daddy.

Handyman Negri?

-Yes, Tuesday?

-Do you like flowers?

-Oh, yes .

I grow lots of flowers.

-But do you like to look
at them real carefully?

-Yes!

You know, flowers can
be very beautiful.

-Oh, I like this one a lot.

-Well, it's time for school.

Listen, do you want me to-- do
you want me to cut it for you?

-Oh, no!

No!

-Oh--

-Thanks anyway.

I want it to keep
growing and changing.

-Well, you can always come
and visit it in the garden.

-That's right.

Its name is Camille.

See you later, Handy.

HANDYMAN NEGRI: Bye, Tuesday.

-Goodbye, Camille.

-Hello.

Is that you, Camille?

Hm.

You must be very
special, since Prince

Tuesday likes you so much.

-Handyman Negri?

-Oh!

Mayor Maggie, I didn't
know you were here.

-You like flowers?

-Oh, yes.

This one is Prince
Tuesday's special friend.

-You mean Tuesday
loves this flower?

-Yeah.

He loves to watch
it change and grow.

-I guess he must
love the way it makes

him feel when he's with it.

-That too, I'm sure.

-[SINGING] When your heart
has butterflies inside it,

then your heart is full of love.

When your heart feels
just like overflowing,

then your heart is full of love.

Love is fragile as your tears.

Love is stronger
than your fears.

When your heart can
sing another's gladness,

then your heart is full of love.

When your heart can
cry another's sadness,

then your heart is full of love.

Love is fragile as your tears.

Love is stronger
than your fears.

When your heart beats
for a special someone,

then your heart is full of love.

When your heart has
room for everybody--

ALL: [SINGING] Then your
heart is full of love.

-I feel that way
about my friends.

-I do, too.

Speaking of friends, has
anyone seen Purple Panda?

-Well, isn't he at
home on Planet Purple?

He doesn't seem to be.

Assistant Mayor Aber
took a package to him,

and he wasn't home.

-Well, you know, I haven't seen
him here in a long, long time.

-Hm.

I'd better call Mr.
Aber and tell him that.

-Mm-hmm.

-Hello?

Assistant Mayor Aber?

Mayor Maggie here.

Have you found Purple Panda yet?

No, he's not here either.

Maybe you should bring
the package back.

All right.

Thank you.

Goodbye.

-You know, Lady
Elaine Fairchild knows

a lot about Planet Purple.

Maybe she could give some help.

-Excellent suggestion.

I'll ask her right away.

You want to come along?

-Well, no thanks.

I have some handy work
to do inside the castle.

-Farewell to you, then.

-Farewell to you.

-Well, hello there, Toots!

How's the mayor today?

-I need your help, Lady Elaine.

-You've got it.

What can I do for you?

-We're trying to
find Purple Panda.

-Now there's a PC for you.

-PC?

-Pleasant creature!

Purple Panda's
pleasant creature.

He's got a big heart.

Have you tried looking
on Planet Purple?

-We have.

He doesn't seem to be there.

-Have you found him?

-Not yet.

-Oh.

-What's that fancy package
you're carrying there, Aber?

-This is a package
for Purple Panda.

-Ah, That's why you
want to find him.

Here.

I'll open it.

We can see what it is.

-I don't think you can
do that, Lady Elaine.

-Oh.

Why not?

-Because for one
thing, it's not ours.

It's for Purple Panda.

And it says very clearly
right here, "do not open."

-What kind of a package is
it that you can't even open?

-We've been wondering
the same thing.

-Hey, where did that thing go?

-Oh, why did I do that again?

-How does it disappear?

-We don't know.

It's just that whenever
you throw it up two times,

it takes off.

-Hey, did any one of
you guys lose this?

-Oh, thank you, Handyman!

-Oh, it's yours.

-Not exactly.

It's that package
for Purple Panda.

-Oh, I see.

It sort of changes.

Have you found Panda?

-No, not yet.

-But we will!

We will!

This is all very interesting.

-What do you suppose is in here?

-Nobody knows.

-Since it says "do not open,"
maybe nobody will ever know.

-That's what you think, Toots.

Come on, Aber.

I need to talk with you.

-I think I'd better
check at the castle.

-Call if you need me.

-I will, thanks.

-What do you think
is in here, really?

Huh.

It's not very heavy.

Oh, no!

-I was trying to tell you!

-But look at the trolley!

-Oh, thank you, Trolley!

-[DINGING]

-Oh, that's for sure.

-[WHISTLING AND DINGING]

-Same to you!

-Yeah, same to you.

-That's a mysterious
thing, isn't it?

I don't know another package
that magically changes

its outside looks like that
just because somebody throws it

up in the air a couple of times.

We'll make up more about
that story next time.

Right now, you know who
needs some food-- these fish.

A little bit each day.

I'd like to show you something.

It's in here.

It's a neighborhood
photo album, but it's

a little different
kind of pictures.

Pictures of people when they
young--- very young-- and now.

Here's Mr. McFeely when
he was a little boy.

Here he is now.

Here's Mrs. McFeely when
she was a little girl,

and here's a picture of her now.

Know who that is?

Mr. Negri, when he
was a boy and now.

Maggie Stuart as a
little girl and now.

Bob Trow as a
little boy and now.

Betty Aberlin as a
little girl and now.

Chuck Aber as a
little boy and now.

Isn't it great to
have good friends?

No matter how they change
on the outside, what matters

is in here.

Sure it is.

[KNOCK AT DOOR]

-Oh, there's
somebody at the door.

Busy day.

Mr. McFeely again!

-Speedy delivery again!

Well, good, Mr. McFeely!

-I have a tape I thought
you'd like to see.

-I'd be glad to see it.

What's it about?

-Well, it's called
Transformations,

and it's kind of
hard to explain,

but it's how things
change over time.

Like winter going to
spring and a flower

blooming and things like that.

-Oh, it sounds very interesting.

Do you have time to
watch it with me?

-I do have time to watch it.

-Let's show it on
Picture-Picture then.

-All righty.
-Transformations.

-Transformations.

That's right, from
one thing to another.

-Thank you.

-All righty.

-Let's take a look at it.

Transformations.

Look at that snow melting.

MR. MCFEELY: The snow is
melting-- winter to spring.

Looks like some pine cones.

MR. ROGERS: Oh, there they are.

They were covered
with snow before.

There's the grass
growing and the clover.

Beautiful.

What's that?

MR. MCFEELY: That's
a dandelion opening.

There it is.

MR. ROGERS: Oh, my.

So fuzzy.

MR. MCFEELY: Now, that's
leaves on a branch,

and they're budding, and
now they're blooming.

MR. ROGERS: Imagine
being able to see that.

MR. MCFEELY: You
know what that is?

MR. ROGERS: Strawberry!

MR. MCFEELY: It's
getting redder.

MR. ROGERS: It's
ripening, isn't it?

MR. MCFEELY: That's right.

MR. ROGERS: Is
that a Caterpillar

MR. MCFEELY: That's a
caterpillar spinning a cocoon.

Now, emerging from the cocoon--

MR. ROGERS: The butterfly.

MR. MCFEELY: That's
a butterfly, yes.

MR. ROGERS: Look
at that butterfly

coming out of that cocoon.

MR. MCFEELY: There it is, out of
the cocoon, completely emerged.

MR. ROGERS: Perched on a flower.

MR. MCFEELY: Guess what this is.

MR. ROGERS: What is this?

MR. MCFEELY: It's a cotton
plant, and it's opening.

MR. ROGERS: And that's the
way cotton plants grow.

MR. MCFEELY: That's right.

MR. ROGERS: Is that a sunflower?

MR. MCFEELY: That's a sunflower.

MR. ROGERS: Ah, wonderful!

MR. MCFEELY: Going
from winter to spring.

-Oh, Mr. McFeely,
thank you for that!

-Well, you're welcome.

-Beautiful.

-You know, there are many
changes in our world.

-Oh, yes.

Lots of mysteries.

-Like how each person changes
a little bit every day.

-And is still the same person.

-You're right.

-You know, one of the things
in here reminds me of a toy

that I have.

I'd like to show.

-All right.

A toy?

-Yes.

I have it in-- somewhere
in-- here it is.

-It looks like a
toy caterpillar.

-It is.

You remember the
caterpillar in this tape?

-I do.

-Now, all you need to do is
to find a place to open it.

-To ope it.

Well, let me see.

Would you go pull on that

MR. ROGERS: No.

Someplace else.

MR. MCFEELY: Oh,
I bet it's here!

Looks like there are--

MR. ROGERS: That's it!

MR. MCFEELY: There we go.

It's changing into--

MR. ROGERS: That's right, and
you turn this around like this.

See?

MR. MCFEELY: That's
a beautiful toy.

MR. ROGERS: Isn't
that a great toy?

MR. MCFEELY: It certainly is.

MR. ROGERS: You know
who gave it to me?

MR. MCFEELY: Who?

MR. ROGERS: Gabi.
MR. MCFEELY: Gabi.

Oh, they live in the north
part of our neighborhood.

-That's right.

-As a matter of fact,
I'm on my way there now.

I'll give you the toy.

-Thank you.

-And I'll take the
transformation delivery.

-Thank you very
much, Mr. McFeely.

-You know, I like to think about
things with you, Mr. Rogers.

-I like to think
about things with you,

too-- important things.

-Important things.

Well, speedy delivery to you.

-Have a good one.

-Bye-bye!

-Goodbye.

-Hm.

Maybe this butterfly will
look down at the flower.

All kinds of wonderful things
to look and wonder about.

You know, wondering
and marveling

is never a waste of time,
especially for a live flower.

The flower probably
loves it, and so may you.

[SINGING] It's such a good
feeling to know you're alive.

It's such a happy feeling.

You're growing inside, and
when you wake up ready to say,

I think I'll make a snappy new
day, it's such a good feeling,

a very good feeling--
the feeling, you know,

that I'll be back
when the day is new,

and I'll have more
ideas for you.

And you'll have things
you'll want to talk about.

I will, too.

[SPEAKING] We'll have lots of
things to talk about next time,

and I'll be here.

Bye!
