[eerie music]

VOICEOVER:Evening comes to the great estate

of Collinwood, and a web of intrigue and mystery

seems to be encircling the great house.

In the neighboring village, Carolyn Stoddard,

little suspecting that anything is wrong,

runs a trivial errand

and hears a terrifying sound behind the door

of a baby's room.

[heavy breathing]

What are you doing here?

[dramatic music]

[eerie music]

Megan, what's wrong?

You can't come in here.

The baby's asleep.

I'm sorry, but...

I heard such a strange sound from inside that room.

I don't know what you could've heard.

It sounded like breathing,

strange breathing.

Oh, that.

It's the radiator.

But, it couldn't have been.

I was terrified the first time I heard it too.

No, I'm sure it wasn't.

[chuckles]

I had Phillip looking all over the house for a

monster of some kind.

But he's more sensible than I am.

He soon discovered what it was.

Oh, we'll have to have it fixed.

I'll, uh, call the man tomorrow.

There was a phone call for you, from Phillip.

It's the reason I came upstairs.

[eerie, chiming music]

[footsteps approaching]

I wrote the number on the pad.

Carolyn, I'm, uh,

I'm sorry if I was abrupt upstairs.

Well, you know how hard the baby is to put to sleep.

I've never even heard the baby cry.

He's a good baby.

Perhaps I'm over-concerned,

not having any children of my own.

Busy.

[eerie, chiming music]

Someone is out there.

Oh, uh, no, I'm, I'm sure he's just passing by.

No, no, Megan, he's still standing there, watching us.

MEGAN: Carolyn!

He ran away.

[ominous music]

What is happening here?

"And the day shall come

"when the child shall be dressed

"in glorious gar--" [loud knocking]

VOICEOVER: David?

I'll be there in a minute, Aunt Elizabeth.

Yes?

I hope you noticed that I knocked.

I'm finally learning to respect your privacy.

I thought I heard you talking to someone.

I was reading a schoolbook aloud.

Oh, shall I check your homework while I'm here?

No, I haven't finished yet.

Well, we can go over what you've already done.

I'd rather do it all at once, thank you.

Do you have a window open?

No.

Oh, you must have.

It's so cold in here, the chill of death.

David?

What's the matter with you?

I was just wondering.

ELIZABETH: About what?

Your husband.

He's back in town.

He's the man I saw with Carolyn, you know.

Hm, my uncle.

How do you know about him?

Oh, I hear things.

We'll have to do something about getting you

friends of your own age.

[dramatic music]

Who is this, please?

VOICEOVER:Well, I can't believe

you don't recognize my voice.

I'd hoped I'd never hear it again.

You can hang up, but if you do,

you will lose Carolyn.

What do you want?

I want to come to Collinwood to see you.

ELIZABETH:No.

Well, then you must come here.

VOICEOVER: To hear more lies?

No, to hear the truth.

To hear what must happen.

How could you tell me what's going to happen?

You've never thought of anything beyond

the next five minutes.

Because I know what must be done.

I know what must be done

to save Carolyn from me.

Let me tell you, please.

That's why I want to see you.

Can't you recognize when...

when I'm trying to be honest?

I'll come to your hotel.

[ominous music]

What's wrong, mother?

Nothing.

Was that father on the phone?

I think it was.

Leave me alone, Carolyn.

Please leave me alone!

[dramatic music]

[eerie music]

DAVID: Hi.

You ought to be in bed.

DAVID: In bed,

or doing my schoolwork.

Or is there something else I've forgotten?

No, you seem to have covered the alternatives nicely.

I wanna read the paper.

Tell me, which part do you read first?

Financial section.

I've grown up, or haven't you noticed?

You've been too busy with your father, I guess.

David.

You know, sometimes I wish I was an orphan.

Fathers do get impossible sometimes, don't they?

Oh David, read the paper.

I guess you don't wanna talk about him then?

What's so interesting about Brewster's advertisement?

Nothing.

I didn't know you were interested in sales.

They're open nights now, until Christmas.

CAROLYN: David, you are not going into town tonight.

No, I'm not.

Are you crazy?

It's late.

I'm just thinking about Christmas.

Making up my list.

Well, I think you can think about it

while you get ready for bed.

I'll call Maggie.

I can go to bed myself.

I'm certainly glad you realized that.

[eerie music]

David?

David?

[tense music]

David?

Well, I had room service send up some brandy,

your favorite.

years ago.

Oh?

You've changed?

Yes.

Well, I still like it.

Sure you won't have some?

I didn't come here to have a drink.

And don't bother playing the sentimental husband with me.

Whatever you remember doesn't interest me, so please stop!

You suspect everything I say to you, don't you?

ELIZABETH: Yes!

PAUL: Well, that makes it very difficult

when I want to be sincere.

And right now, I do,

about Carolyn.

I want to be sincere.

I'm waiting.

[scoffs]

The famed Collins impatience.

Everything must run according to your timetable.

If you say so.

Now listen to me.

There's only one solution to Carolyn,

and I cannot make it happen.

You can!

You must get her out of Collinsport as soon as possible.

Why?

Just tell me why.

[dramatic music]

I won't do anything without being told why.

You must!

Not without a reason.

Elizabeth, you must take Carolyn on a cruise

around the world, and don't say anything to anyone.

Not to Roger, your lawyers, your brokers,

absolutely no one must know!

[laughs]

I almost took you seriously for a moment,

but as usual, you went too far.

Go around the world secretly?

You've lost your mind.

Oh no, please.

Don't go!

Then tell me what this is all about.

[Paul sighs]

Well, it's...

[sighs]

It's. [sighs]

ELIZABETH: Can't you think?

Can't you make something up?

You'll think I made it up, you won't believe it.

Well, I'm glad you realize that before you say it.

Elizabeth, if you walk out that door--

You'll have to think up another absurd telephone call

to make to me.

Something terrible, believe me,

something terrible will happen.

What, Paul?

What will happen?

[tense music]

Well, you know what I am capable of doing.

You don't have to agree.

I know that you know.

You understand,

or at least you used to.

The things that used to happen to me.

Things...

that never happened to anyone else.

What have you done, Paul?

A, a terrible thing.

I didn't know it was terrible when it happened, but--

Will you stop apologizing and tell me what you've done?

[Paul sighs]

That night that I left Collinwood,

years ago,

that's when it happened.

[telephone rings]

ELIZABETH: Paul?

What's wrong?

[telephone rings]

Well, if you don't answer the phone, I will.

No!

Don't touch it!

[tense music]

Hello?

Hello?

No one answered.

I heard breathing.

You are in trouble, Paul, and as usual,

you're trying to involve all of us.

You are involved!

No, we are not!

I'll never be able to figure out what this latest

plot of yours is, but I can't see why taking Carolyn

around the world will help.

But I dare say, your devious mind has thought of something.

If anyone should leave town, Paul, it's you.

But, I've already told you that.

Good night.

You almost had me believing you.

I'm grateful for that telephone call.

[door slams]

[sighs]

Yes, this is Paul Stoddard in room .

I don't want any more calls put through at any time,

not so long as I am staying here.

Do you understand?

No more calls at all!

[dramatic music]

[ominous music]

[door chimes]

David?

David!

[door chimes]

MEGAN: Good evening, Mrs. Stoddard.

How are you, Mrs. Todd?

Fine.

Uh, can I help you?

Well, I saw David coming in here.

He should be in bed, of course.

Well, you can see he's not here.

That's strange.

He was carrying a package, very much like this one.

This?

Oh, [laughs] this is mine,

I was at Brewster's this afternoon.

It's mine, I'm afraid.

I saw him.

Perhaps he saw me coming and is hiding.

Excuse me, Mrs. Todd, if I try to find him?

I'm sure he's not here.

Well you don't mind if I look for him?

There's no need to go upstairs, Mrs. Stoddard.

I was just there.

I'd have heard him.

Mrs. Todd, I'm sorry.

I realize this is an imposition,

but surely you understand that a child can't go

wandering around Collinsport at all hours.

Shall we look for him now?

[tense music]

[heavy breathing]

It's all right.

I brought you what you need.

I'll always look out for you, you know that.

It's my duty.

You'll like what I brought you.

I know you will.

ELIZABETH:David, where are you?

I know you're here.

David!
