MADGE: My, my!

Excuse me.

Letters?

Oh, letters!Oh, letters!

Alphabetical.Alphabetical.

Good idea.Good idea.

Dear Smooch and Winslow,

I thank you so much

for helping me arrange my books.

You're welcome, Madge.

Psst...

Go ahead and tell her.

Me?

You're the scientific one.

You tell her.

Tell me what, dears?

Look what I found.

Oh, seeds.

Oh, very nice.

Seeds from the tree.

Very nice, very nice.

[ gasps ]

From the tree!

Wow!

There's another giant World Tree

inside these seeds?!

Watch out!

It could pop out at any moment!

[ chuckling ]

No, no, no.

It takes quite some time for a tree to grow.

How long?

Let me see.

I have a chart about this somewhere.

Aha, here it is, yes.

It was hiding.

[ chuckling ]

Well, a tree starts from a seed

and grows and grows to its full height,

but that can take hundreds of years.

That's a long time.

Quite, quite.

And having grown for that long,

they are amazingly strong and stable.

In fact, creatures like ourselves

may live their entire lives in a tree

and their great-grandparents and their children

will live in the same tree.

No way.

Really?

Yes, my dears.

Trees tend to live much longer, you know,

than most creatures...

even old creaky map turtles, like myself.

So,

if we all live here

and other animals have lived here

and will live here,

I guess the tree is pretty...

important!

Oh, yes.

And I have to admit I feel like there's a spirit in the tree.

Whoa, a spirit!

Like a ghost?

Or smoke?

Or a fog?

No, nothing like that.

Something good.

Something that supports us.

The spirit!

Is there or is there not a Spirit of the World Tree?

Well, not everyone thinks there's a spirit.

Other creatures have a lot of different ideas.

We want to find "it," now!

Okay.

So here's the plan.

We'll ask around and see what everyone thinks,

and then you can make up your own mind about what you think.

You can, too.

Come with us, okay?

Hello! Hello!

Yikes!

Uh... hi.

Hey, Wartz.

Yes, and the spirit is outside, on the leaves and the bark.

That's what makes me feel so good.

Rah, Rah, Shiss Koom Bah!

Hey, Burdette,

I don't think they mean that kind of spirit,

like team spirit.

of something that supports us and is always there?

What do you think?

Oh, my.

But I still think

the tree could use a cheerleader.

Go, leaves!

Go, branches!

Yay!

We just want to know what you think.

Well,

I think the spirit must be

in the inside part of the tree,

I'm sure I'm right.

Good point, Burdette.

The trunk is the inside part of the tree

is an ant?!

Can you hear the wind rustling through the leaves?

And can you feel how strong and sturdy these branches are?

Yeah, and I love the way the bark is so rough.

Hey, Snook, maybe all of this--

all the things we love about the tree...

SMOOCH AND WINSLOW: Maybe they're the spirit of the tree!

ALL: Whoa!

I come with a message from the tree.
