Leo: We live in a big, beautiful world.

Leo: I'm Leo.

Andy: I'm Andy.

Carmen: And I'm Carmen.

Our parents work in a circus that travels

all around the world and we travel with them.

Andy: So we never know where in the world we will end up next.

(train whistling)

Carmen: But wherever we go, we know that

Luna the Moon will be there with us.

Carmen: More Than All That Jazz

(loud trumpet playing) ♪♪

Carmen: How do you like my jazz music, Honey?

Honey: Totally jazzy!

Carmen: Let's go see what Señor Fabuloso thinks!

Honey: Yeah!!

(jazzy trumpet playing) ♪♪

Fabuloso: Circo Fabuloso Band,

today we are in a very special musical city.

The birthplace of JAZZ music!

(screaming) NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA!!

Fabuloso: Eh...yes...sooo,

our normal musical numbers will not do in this city.

Our music must be...

Fabuloso JAZZ!

Andy: WOO, yeah!!

Fabuloso: UGH, just go and learn some jazz music please.

(grumbling)

Leo: Hi, Señor Fabuloso!

Fabuloso: Hey, hello, children.

I'm very busy as you can see.

I am in dire need of some Fabuloso--

Carmen: JAZZ?

(trumpet playing) ♪♪

Andy/Leo: Carmen!

Carmen: What'd ya think of that, Señor?

I think it's finally perfect enough

for me to do what I've always wanted --

to perform for the Circo!

Fabuloso: No, no, little butterfly,

that's not going to work. Run along!

Carmen: But, why not?

Fabuloso: You are but one lone butterfly child...

Come back later when you have a full jazz band!

Carmen: Full jazz band?

But where would I find a full jazz band?

Fabuloso: Improvise!!

Carmen: Improvise?

I don't even know what that word means!

Honey: Let's ask the Magic Globe!

Carmen: Hey, great idea, Honey!

Magic Globe, what's improvise mean?

Magic Globe: Hi, everyone!

That's an easy one!

Improvising is when you make something up

on the spot, without a lot of preparing.

Carmen: Like going with the flow!

Magic Globe: Right!

Andy: Like making it up as you go along!

Magic Globe: Yes!

Leo: Like... Magic Globe: Okay Leo,

that's enough.

Leo: (sad) Okay.

Magic Globe: Today, we're in a city that knows

lots about improvising...

New Orleans, Louisiana!

New Orleans is a very musical city!

It's the birthplace of jazz music,

and home to one of the greatest musicians of all time...

Louis Armstrong!

With his unique voice and amazing trumpet playing,

he helped create a style of jazz

that would influence music all over the world!

Magic Globe: Have fun in New Orleans, friends!

Andy: Louis sounds like he was the man!

Leo: And improvising sounds like fun.

Maybe you can improvise yourself a band

and play like Louis Armstrong, Carmen.

Carmen: Oh boy.

Andy: Well I don't mean to brag,

but since we went to China,

I can lay down beats like nobody's business.

And Leo can play the tuba!

Leo: What? No, I can't.

Andy: Sure, you can! Remember when I got stuck in one

and you helped pull me out?

Leo: Oh yeah... I guess that did make a cool noise.

Andy: FWUMP!

Carmen: Hmm, you might be onto something guys.

Why don't we head over to the Circo's music room

and see if we can put a jazz band together?

(jazzy music) ♪♪

(bad jazz music) ♪♪

Carmen: Ugh!

Uh, that wasn't too good, guys.

Luna: I LOVED IT! (clapping)

Andy/Carmen/Leo: Luna!!!!

Carmen: ♪ Luna... ♪

(trumpet playing) ♪♪

Leo : ♪ Luna's heere... ♪

(tuba playing) ♪♪

Andy: ♪ Lunaaa... ♪

(drumming) ♪

Andy/Carmen/Leo: ♪ Show us the world, lead the way! ♪

Luna: Don't let me interrupt. You were sounding great.

Carmen: Oh thanks, Luna, but it wasn't quite right.

All right, guys, let's take it from the top.

(bad jazz music) ♪♪

Carmen: Ugh!

No-no-no-no-NO!

Carmen: You guys, that's not how the song goes!

We can't be a jazz band if we change the music every time.

Andy: I dunno, Carmen...

I kinda thought this jazz thing was gonna be fun.

Leo: Yeah...

I don't know if I want to do this anymore, Carmen.

Andy: I think I'd rather go see what the Circo band is up to.

Leo: Oh, that sounds fun!

Andy: Bye, Carmen! Bye, Luna!

Carmen: Now I have no band to perform my jazz song!

I'll never play like the great Louis Armstrong at this rate...

Luna: Louis Armstrong, you say?

Now that you mention it, one of my friends here

in New Orleans might know a thing or two about

playing jazz like Louis Armstrong.

Let's venture out into New Orleans.

He's sure to be hanging around somewhere.

Carmen: Let's go! Honey: Yeah!

Dex: (sing-rhyme) People on the street, shuffling their feet...

Luna: Yo, Dexter!

Dex: Yo, Luna!

How ya been?

Luna: Well, Dex.

My friend, Carmen...

she needs some help with her jazz playing.

Dex: Right on. Right on.

Good to meet you, Little Sister.

Why don't you play me a little something...

Carmen: (deep breath)

(bad trumpet playing) ♪

Dex: Hold up, hold up!

Oh yeah...

it's just as I thought...

Luna: What is it, Dex?

Dex: She's got a mean case

o' the Flibbity Jibbities.

It's when you're playing too uptight!

Step into my office.

Dex: I only know one cure for the flibbity jibbities...

passed down from Louis Armstrong.

Luna/Carmen: (GASP) The Louis Armstrong?

Dex: Yes ma'am!

Louis had a great trick for ridding us all

of the Flibbity Jibbities.

You improvise!

Carmen: Oh, right...

improvise.

Making things up as I go along.

Uh...how do I do that with music?

Dex: Improvising with music

is when you use your skills

and knowledge to play on the fly!

You don't think! You just feel!

If you're doin' it right,

you never play the same way twice.

Carmen: Never play the same way twice?

Dex: Here, let me show you!

(funky jazzy bass) ♪♪

Honey: One, two, three!

Dex: ♪ Let me give you just a little education, ♪

♪ I'll sing it to you sweet and nice. ♪

♪ It's a simple thing we call improvisation, ♪

♪ Where you never play the same way twice, ♪

♪ First like this: bah-dah-bah-doo! ♪

♪ Then like that: bah-doo-bah-dah! ♪

♪ Then another way, you crazy alley cat: skibbety-bah! ♪

♪ It's a musically surprising conversation, ♪

♪ A way to cook a song with special spice, ♪

♪ A creative-variation celebration, ♪

♪ Where you never play the same way twice! ♪

Dex: First like this: ♪ (trumpet solo) ♪

Then like that: ♪ (trumpet solo) ♪

Then a way where all the notes are kinda fat:

(drum solo) ♪

Dex: ♪ So listen up and use your concentration ♪

♪ And let me drop some musical advice ♪

Dex: I dig it, Carmen!

I believe you are cured of the Flibbity-Jibbities!

Carmen: Thank you so much, Dexter!

No problem, Little Sister.

Just remember what I taught ya. Ha ha!

Carmen: Señor Fabuloso is sure to

let me play for the Circo now.

I gotta get the band back together.

C'mon Luna!

Luna: See ya around, Dexter!

(bad jazz band music playing) ♪

Fabuloso: AGH!!!!

Enough, enough, you have failed me.

(grumbling)

Andy: Egh...

Carmen: Andy, Leo! Hey, guys!

Listen, I'm sorry I got so picky with your playing earlier.

I wasn't being very nice.

I'd really like a second chance

to play jazz music with you guys.

Andy: I don't know Carmen...

I don't want to play your song all wrong again.

Carmen: But that's it!

You don't need to worry about playing my song just right.

In fact, with jazz, it's better if you

don't play it the same way twice.

You don't think it!

You feel it!

Leo: Yeah... but,

I'm still bad at playing the tuba.

Luna: That's okay, Leo. I'll play tuba

Carmen: Señor Fabuloso! I'm back!

And, this time I have a band!

Fabuloso: No, no! I have heard enough for today, children.

Carmen: Oh, come on, Señor.

Just give us a chance, I think you're gonna like it.

Fabuloso: Alright, children. Serenade me!

But, you had better blow my tail feathers off!

Carmen: Oh, we will!

Carmen: Okay, guys...

remember to feel it.

Luna: (slow tuba playing) ♪

(funky jazz band music) ♪♪

♪♪

(funky drum solo) ♪♪

♪♪

(kaboom)

Fabuloso: Carmen! Oh my goodness!

Your beautiful music!

How is this possible?

It sounds so jazzy, yet unrehearsed!

Carmen: Thanks, Señor Fabuloso!

It's called improvisation.

You feel the music and make things up as you go along!

Just like Louis Armstrong!

Fabuloso: I have decided,

you shall play for the Circo,

and it shall be glorious.

Carmen: We'd love to, Señor Fabuloso!

Fabuloso: EEEE! (claps)

Leo: You did it, Carmen!

You're gonna perform your jazz for the Circo!

Carmen: We did it guys,

thanks to New Orleans, and some inspiration

from Louis Armstrong.

Andy: And don't forget about Luna!

Carmen: Yeah!

Where is Luna, anyway?

Carmen: Luna? Luna: Up here, Carmen.

I wish I could stay longer, but

it's time for me to improvise my way back up into the sky.

Carmen: That's okay, Luna.

Thanks for introducing me to Dexter.

I learned a lot about jazz improvisation

and really feeling the music!

Luna: You sure did, Little Sister,

and the more you improvise,

the better you'll get!

Who knows, some day you may be as good as Louis Armstrong.

Carmen: You really think so?

I wish it wasn't so late,

I feel like there is so much more to learn in New Orleans!

Luna: Of course there is, but remember,

there's always tomorrow.

(jazzy Luna theme song) ♪♪

Leo: Hi, it's Leo: with a funny folk tale from Louisiana -

The Dog Who Could Walk on Water.

Once, there were two friends

named Pascal and Olide

who always argued about whose dog was best.

Olide was tired of Pascal always bragging,

so he went out

and searched the whole wide world...

Hmmmm...

Leo: until he found a dog who could walk on water.

Leo: Pascal saw them coming and said,

"I see you got yourself a new dog.

"He can't be as good as my dog though."

"We'll see," said Olide, "we'll see."

Leo: Well, Pascal picked up a stick

and threw it way out into the lake.

His dog leaped into the water,

swam out, retrieved the stick,

and paddled back fast,

totally out of breath.

(dog panting)

Leo: "Top that," said Pascal.

Leo: Olide just smiled.

He threw the stick even farther,

and that new dog leaped onto the water

and skimmed along the surface like he was running on land.

He fetched that stick twice as fast,

didn't get wet,

and wasn't even breathing hard.

It was like a dog miracle.

Leo: "Well," grinned Olide,

"what do you think of my new dog?"

Leo: "Not much," said Pascal,

"he can't even swim!"

Leo: Swamp Pals

Leo: There! These photos look...

...not good enough!

Andy: I may have some good ones in my collection!

Leo: I guess...

Carmen: What are these pictures for any way?

Leo: Well, today I'm finally meeting my Pen-Pal, Remy:!

He lives nearby!

I wanna show him photos of my life,

but I wish they were more exciting!

Huh??

(upbeat music) ♪

(tires screeching)

Leo: It's here, it's here, it's here!

(splat) (vroom)

Leo: (GASP) Got it!

Carmen: Got what?

Leo: My letter from Remy:!

You know, my pen pal!

We've been writing back and forth for months!

See, this is Remy Spooner.

He draws me pictures of these crazy stories

that he says are all about his life.

Here he drew his house on stilts in a swamp!

And look, here he drew himself

riding with his alligator neighbors on a flying boat!

Andy: I wanna ride on a flying boat!

Leo: (chuckles) Yeah, Remy's got such a big imagination...

Carmen: You mean his stories aren't true?

Leo: Naww, he's just being Remy...

there's no way his hometown has all these things.

I can't wait to see what his life is really like!

Carmen: Well, if he lives nearby, let's find out!

Where are we today, Magic Globe?

Magic Globe: Hi, everybody!

Today we're in the city of New Orleans,

located in the United States of America

in the state of Louisiana.

New Orleans is a vibrant city on the Mississippi River.

(streetcar dinging) (steamboat horn blaring)

Louisiana is home to Cajun people

who live in cities and towns on prairies

and along bayous and swamps.

Leo: Hey, Remy: said he was Cajun!

Magic Globe: Their traditions, language, music, and food

make the Cajun people very special!

Have fun exploring Louisiana, everyone!

Carmen:/Andy:/Leo: Thanks, Magic Globe!

Andy: Let's go meet your pen-pal, Leo:!

Carmen: The question is: how do we get to Remy's house?

(boat horn blaring)

Luna: How y'all doin'?

Carmen/Andy/Leo: Luna!!!

Luna: Woohoo!

(boing) Hi, friends!

Carmen: ♪ Luna, come and play ♪

Leo: ♪ Luna's here, whaddya say! ♪

Andy: ♪ Luna, bright as day ♪

Carmen/Andy/Leo: ♪ Show us the world, lead the way! ♪

Luna: Welcome to New Orleans, everybody!

I heard someone is meeting his pen pal today.

Leo: Yeah, I get to meet Remy!

Luna: Oh, Leo, this is so exciting!

I remember the first time I met my pen-pal, Saturn.

We'd been writing back and forth,

and loved reading about how our lives were so different.

By the time we actually got together,

we were such good friends, it was as if we'd already met!

Now... off to see Remy!

(vroom) (splash)

Luna: This is the Louisiana bayou!

Carmen: Luna, what's a bayou?

Luna: A bayou is a slow-moving stream

found in marshlands and swamps.

Leo: So, what Remy wrote about living near the swamps was true?

Wait, what is that?

Andy/Carmen/Luna: WHHHHOOOAAA...

Leo: AAH!

Luna: Don't worry, Leo, that's just Spanish Moss.

We have to go through it to get to Remy's house.

Andy: Cool!

Leo: Ewww.

Luna: (gasp) Oh, look you guys, I think we're here!

Carmen/Andy/Leo: Woooowww!

Luna: Welcome to Remy:'s house!

Leo: Oh, man... (gulp)

so his house really is on stilts.

Remy: Leo, is that you?

Wooohoo!

Wooo!

(splat)

Nailed it!

Leo: Yea!!

Remy: Leo! Bring it in, bruh!

Leo: Aww, Remy, it's so great to finally meet you!

Remy: I brought you one of my favorite friendship juice boxes!

Leo: Wow, that's so nice of you!

(squirt)

Leo: Soooo, these are my friends...

Andy, Carmen, and you probably know, Luna!

Andy: Hi, Remy! We're some of Leo's cooler friends!

Carmen: Yeah, we've heard great things about you!

Andy: Your stilt house is amazing!

Does that mean you also have a flying boat?

Leo: Oh, Andy, Remy was just joking about the--

Remy: Oh, yeah, it's right there!

Leo: Huh?

Remy: It's actually called an airboat.

We can go for a ride if you want.

Luna: We'd love to go on a ride in your airboat, Remy!

Andy: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!!

Leo: Okay, so...

the swamp and the stilthouse are real.

But there's no way that airboat actually flies...

right?

Leo: AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!

It feels like we're FLYING!!!!

(splat) Andy: Whoa! Sweet fish, Leo!

Luna: Woooooo!!! Yeah!!

Speed it up Remy:!!

(engine revving)

Andy: AAAAHHHH!!

Carmen: Wow, Leo! Remy is even cooler than you said!!

Leo: Yeah, Remy is really, really cool.

Remy: (slurp)

Leo: AAAAAAHHHHHHH!

(vroom)

(splash)

Leo: Ehhh... Hnnnhhh!

(smack)

Leo: The airboat is definitely real.

What's next, are the alligator parties real too?

Andy: Well, here's some alligators...

buuut they don't look like they're having a party to me.

(low rumble)

Remy: Huh? A party? Heh.

These alligators don't have parties.

Leo: Ah, see...

Remy: Those alligators have parties!

(funky party music) ♪♪

Fred: Hey, Remy:! Care for some gumbo?

Remy: Sure thing, Fred!

Andy: Wow! I wanna have gumbo with the gator neighbors!

Leo: At the Circo, we don't even have neighbors...

Luna/Carmen/Andy/Remy: (Cheering) Woooo!

Let's Party! Yeah! Gumbo!

Leo: Everything Remy wrote about is true!

This is way more exciting than my life.

Remy: And these are my parents!

Luna: Hiya, Spooners!

It's been so long!!

Remy: My dad is a shrimp boat captain

and my mom is a veterinarian.

Andy: Wow! That's awesome!

Carmen: Wow, Remy, your life is amazing!

Remy: Yeah, it's just my normal life on the Bayou.

Leo: Normal?

It's totally not normal.

Remy: Well, I have to admit, it's pretty cool.

The Bayou is a great place to live!

Remy: Un, Deux! Un, deux, trois!

♪ It's good to be a boy down on the bayou ♪

♪ I fly by airboat to my school each day ♪

(sluuuurp)

♪ Runnin' 'round with shrimps and alligators ♪

Alligators: ♪ Alligators! ♪

Remy: ♪ Livin' life the good ol' Cajun way ♪

♪ My mama she fiddles on her fiddle ♪

(fiddling) ♪♪

♪ My daddy plays a mean accordion ♪

(accordion playing) ♪♪

♪ The Crawfish dance around our table ♪

♪ Doin' the two-step, grinnin' a gumbo grin ♪

Crawfish: ♪ Yeah, gumbo! ♪

Remy: ♪ I know when I look out on the bayou ♪

Crawfish: ♪ On the bayou! ♪

Remy: ♪ From high up in a mossy cypress tree ♪

♪♪

♪ That even if I roam the wide world over ♪

♪♪

♪ The Louisiana swamp is home to me. ♪

♪♪

Luna: Hey, Leo. What are you doing all by yourself?

Is everything okay?

Leo: R-Remy's life is so amazing Luna.

How can mine compare?

Luna: What? What are you talking about?

Leo: I thought he was just making this stuff up for fun,

but it's all true.

I'm afraid my life is too boring,

and he won't want to even be friends with me.

Luna: Oh, Leo...

sometimes our lives are very different from our friends',

but we can still share experiences together.

That's what friendship is all about.

And I'm sure he doesn't think your life is boring.

Leo: Really? I did bring this photo album

of the Circo for him.

Luna: I bet he'd love to see it.

Why don't you go show him?

(accordion stomping music) ♪♪

Leo: H-Hey Remy:?

Remy: Hey, Leo! Having a good time?

Leo: Yeah! Everything here along the Bayou is awesome.

Actually, it's so awesome,

I thought you were making it all up for fun.

(nervous laugh)

Remy: Making it up for fun?

(hearty laugh)

What, like the way you always do when you write about your life?

Leo: Huh? I don't make anything up.

Remy: Oh, right.

Like you really live in a traveling circus.

Pfft.

Leo: Yeah, well, I brought you this photo album

if you want to take a look.

Remy: You mean you really went to the Great Pyramids of Giza?

Leo: Yeah... that was pretty fun!

Remy: And you danced IN the Carnival Parade in Rio?

There's no way!

Carmen: I remember that!

Remy: Gwah! You really do travel

all around the world with a circus?

Luna: That I can personally vouch for.

Remy: And there's Señor Fabuloso!

This is incredible!

And the Melvinis are real?

Bowling pins with mustaches?

Carmen: (laughs) Nice Chicken-suit, Andy!

Andy: I think we've seen enough of that.

Remy: Leo, I had no idea the things

you wrote about your life were true.

I thought you were making it all up with your imagination!

Your life is so exciting.

Do you think, my life is boring compared to yours?

Leo: Are you kidding?

I thought the same thing about your life!!

Remy: Really? (chuckles)

Well, I guess both our lives are pretty exciting then!

C'mon! Let's go have some gumbo

with my alligator friends!

Leo: Sweet!

You coming, Luna? Luna?

Luna: Sorry, Leo! I'm up here.

Leo: Back in the sky already?

Luna: I'm just writing a letter to Saturn.

She's not going to believe I rode in an airboat!

(fawooosh)

Saturn: An airboat on the bayou?

No way!! (laughs)

Leo: Life along the bayou is really great isn't it Luna?

Luna: It sure is, Leo!

I had so much fun today.

Leo: I can't wait to make even more friends in Louisiana!

Luna: There are friends to share experiences with

all over the world.

But remember, there's always tomorrow.
