Looks like you got another one.

Guy doesn't change his
pattern much, does he?

Sergeant?

Look like another r*pe victim?

Well, at this point,
I'd just be guessing.

Go ahead. Take a guess.

I'd rather not.

Why don't you fellows
check with the hospital

after they've made
a full examination?

For right now, we
have a Jane Doe

who was found off the road

by a couple of kids who
were parked up here.

They heard her
moaning and went to look.

She was about 50 feet
down the incline over there.

She's still alive, but she
seems to be in shock.

Sounds like the
same guy, doesn't it?

Was she assaulted?

I'd just be guessing.

You better check with the
hospital in about an hour.

Thanks, Sergeant.

What you've just seen,
ladies and gentlemen,

we've seen a young lady
brought up on a stretcher.

Everything about this
one fits the other three.

Except this time
the girl's still alive.

Yeah.

Those kids may
have saved her life,

pulling in here
the way they did.

The detectives will
follow up at the hospital.

Maybe we can get a
description of this creep.

I'd sure like to get him.

Welcome to the club.

The girl gave us a description.

Hmm, 6 feet, brown
hair, blue jacket, about 30.

Not much to go on.

No, but it's more than we had.

I think the girl can identify
him if we pull him in.

Detective's getting
a list together

of all known sex offenders
who fit the description.

We'll let the girl take a
look at the mug sh*ts.

Her name is Sharon Morton.

She was hitchhiking.

The guy picked her
up in a red sports car,

drove her up in the
hills, and assaulted her.

How long will it take to get a
cross check from the DMV?

I don't know.

Depends on how many
guys are on the list.

Well, it's a start.

Yeah, see you tomorrow.

Yeah.

Yeah. It made the front page.

can't nail that guy.

Something wrong?

I blew a tire.

Guess I hit a rock or something.

You don't think I
bent the rim, do you?

No. No chance. It would
take a lot to bend that rim.

She's the best dirt bike made.

Great. She yours?

No. I borrowed it.

I'm going to take it back.

Back where?

I live in Hollywood.

You mean you road that
thing all the way over here?

Tried the hills. Yeah.

Who does the bike belong to?

A friend of my brother's.

I didn't think he'd mind,

not enough to send the
cops after me anyways.

He didn't. We got a call.

You know you could
have hurt yourself.

Me?

I'll call impound.

Right.

What's your name, son?

Rusty Cobb.

How old are you, Rusty?

Man, someday I'm going
to race these babies.

I don't doubt that for a minute.

Remember that name.

Rusty Cobb?

Yep.

Someday he'll be a

- Where?

Went down to the Boulevard.

I own some florist

and went down to my
shop to pick up my books.

Which way did you
take coming back?

That way. What's this all about?

There was a situation involving
a red sports car like yours.

We're just checking it out.

What sort of a situation?

A girl was picked
up hitchhiking.

When we went after the
car, she was pushed out.

And you think it was me.

Like I said, we're
just checking it out.

Mm-hmm. Where is she?

Back on Mulholland. She's okay.

Well, what are we waiting for?

Why don't we get down there
and have her take a look at me?

You don't have to confront her.

Maybe you should
consult an attorney.

What for? I'm not
guilty of anything.

Let's get it over with.

Okay, Paula, your
folks live in the Valley?

They own a house there.

I don't live there anymore.

I'd appreciate it if you
could give me some address.

I'm a child of nature.

I live on the road.

I think you guys
call us street people.

How old are you, Paula?

I'm 16 and old enough
to take care of myself.

Hey, nothing happened.

I didn't break
any of your rules,

and I'm not hurt,

so why can't I get out of here?

For one thing,
you're still a juvenile.

You'll have to play
it our way for now.

I heard your pursuit
call. Fill me in.

We saw a guy in a red
sports car pick her up.

We tailed him. He took off.

He pushed her out up here.

He took off after him.

Yeah, Malloy's

I heard the call
on my way up here.

Did you get a
description of the guy?

Yeah, kind of.

Mr. Average again.

Yeah, he sure gets around.

Mind waiting here for
a minute, Mr. Taylor?

What have you got, Pete?

This guy's name is Taylor.

He's got a car
parked up the hill

exactly like the one we chased.

The motor's still warm.

He doesn't fit the description
the girl gave us last night.

I noticed that, too,

but he's Mr. Cooperative.

He almost drove me down here,

said he wanted to help us
get this thing straightened out.

I don't think Paula Jessup's
going to be much help.

You sure Taylor doesn't
mind her identifying him?

He insisted on it.

Bring her over.

You want to step over
here for a minute, Paula?

Is this the man who
picked you up, Paula?

I wouldn't get in a car
with an old man like that.

You got the wrong guy.

May I go now?

First we're going to have
to contact your parents.

What's your mother's name?

Bonnie Jessup.

Broken bones, measles,
and school problems.

Those things I
know how to handle,

but this, I...

Paula...

She said she doesn't
need us anymore.

She doesn't,

not for food or money

or love.

We're not holding
Paula, Mrs. Jessup.

You're free to take her home.

Two years ago, she
was an A and B student.

Would you believe that?

Then...

Last year she ran
away six times.

Her father and I went after her.

Every time we brought her back,

mostly from communes.

Then there just didn't seem to be
any point in bringing her back anymore.

She'd only run away
again in a week or two.

It was wrecking our family.

We have another child,
Brian, Paula's younger brother.

He didn't understand.

I don't understand.

Paula, what is it you want?

Mac says detectives
turned in about 50 probable

of the description of the r*pist

that girl gave us in
the hospital last night.

Yeah, I heard.

I guess computer's working

on a DMV crosscheck
on a red sports car.

Whatever happened to good
old-fashioned police logic?

What are you talking about?

I don't know.

It used to be

a policeman would
scrutinize the site of a crime,

collect evidence.

Then some venerable
old Oriental gentleman

in a white Panama suit

would stand in a
room full of suspects

and figure out the guilty party.

I see what you mean.

Today a mass of
electronic circuits

spit out the same
information on little index cards

that can only be
read by some guy

with a doctorate in
computer programming.

It just isn't the same.

But it's faster.

Besides, you wouldn't look
that good in a Panama suit.

I would look sensational
in a white Panama suit.

Just like an ice cream man.

- You go ahead.
- What is it?

The arrest was half made
by the time we got here.

Not them.

Them.

Police scouts.

We were on our way
home from a scout meeting

and listening to
police frequencies.

We heard the 211 call go out,

saw these two guys
running out of a store,

and we grabbed one of
them and pinned them down.

The rest was mop-up.

Well, not the part I was in.

That's just a figure of speech.

Oh.

Did the computer match
any of our suspects

with a red sports car?

I just got the
readout an hour ago.

We drew a blank,

but it's still punching
holes in cards,

so you never know.

Well, fellas, I want
to congratulate you.

That was good work.

Thank you.

I sure wish we'd turn
something on our r*pist.

I though we'd scored when
that red Porsche took off on us,

but Taylor just doesn't figure.

He was sure awful cooperative.

Yeah, I've got the same feeling,

almost like he knew
what was gonna happen.

Those guys wouldn't be so
anxious to be in a show-up.

Yeah.

How about 7?

I was just going

I didn't know who to call.
My husband's out of town.

Yellow jackets and red
crosses, a real mixed bag.

I don't know what Paula would
be doing with those things.

I'm sure she doesn't use dr*gs.

I'm sure she wouldn't.

We wouldn't know if she
does or doesn't, Mrs. Jessup,

but there's far too
much here for just a user.

Are you saying she's
selling narcotics?

It's possible.

Did you come straight
home from the station today?

Yes, of course.

Must have had the
stash on her all the time.

Yeah, and I got a pretty
good hunch where she got it.

Yeah, Taylor. That's
why he had to run for it.

After he dumped Paula
out and ditched the stash,

he didn't mind
her looking at him.

She wouldn't burn
her own supplier.

What are you talking about?

Why?

Why'd you call the police?

Please, honey. I didn't
know what else to do.

You and your middle-class ethic.

Paula!

Are you so incapable
of understanding me?

This is poison, Paula.

Why do you sell it?

Is it for the money?

I suppose you guys
are gonna arrest me.

Paula, answer me.

Yes, it's for the money.

Of course, it's for the money.

How do you think
I can afford to live?

Anything's better
than living here

and feeling your criticism.

You don't like my friends.

You don't like the way I dress.

You don't want me to be myself.

Just a carbon copy
of you and Dad.

How could you sell this stuff?

If it's just for the money,

you better start
examining your own ethic.

Paula, before we go any further,

I think you better
understand your rights.

I know them.

Besides, you guys are
gonna arrest me anyway,

so what does it matter?

I waive them.

Please, honey,
cooperate with them.

Come on, Paula, we'll
take you to the station.

You leave my sister alone.

Please, Paula.

Please stay.

Oh, Brian,

it'll be okay.

Really, honey, it's all right.

She'll go to jail if
she doesn't help you.

It's hard to say, son.

If she helps us, that will
be taken into consideration.

Please, Paula. Please help them.

I love you, and you've
been gone so much.

Okay.

You guys are wrong.

I own a florist shop.

I wouldn't know a barbiturate
from an aspirin tablet.

I want to call my attorney.

The detectives
caught the r*pist.

They're booking him now.

How'd they get
him? Computer, I bet.

No, just good old police logic.

Te girl said last night

that she hit him pretty
hard with her purse

before he got
her out of the car.

It's one of those big heavy jobs

with metal tips on the corners.

Detectives got a
latent on the purse,

some brown hairs on the corner.

Here's where it gets good.

One of the detectives
thought to check

all the hospital admitting
reports for last night.

And they turned the guy.

He had a hairline skull fracture

and was just checking
out when they arrested him.

Then it wasn't the computer.

No, I just told you.

What's wrong with him?

Oh, nothing.

You just cleaned and pressed
his white Panama suit for him.

Hey, what's with
you guys anyway?

Good night, Mac.

Good night.
