Racer the Rescue Racoon here

with a quick word about safety!

If you see a wild animal you think is hurt,

stay quiet and find an adult.

Have them call a local veterinarian or

wildlife rescue organization for help.

This will keep you and the animal safe!

That's me, Fred the house cat.

When my family leaves for the day,

I don't just sit inside watching the world go by.

I become...

Ugh! This stinks!

So I'd go out in the nature playground and watch them!

Hal: Who doesn't love bugs and birds!<span tts:fontStyle="italic"> ?

Sadie: Yeah, but that's how I got injured.

I saw a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird.

I ran over to look, I lost my balance,

and ka-pow, hurt my paw.

bird watch with my binoculars and it's not so easy.

Sir <span> Galahad: Told you!

Nature Cat: Hm...we were able to make her

to let us into the apartment.

Sir Galahad: I doubt I am willing

We need help figuring out a way to bring bugs and birds to her,

but don't have much time.

Sir Galahad: Uh! Okay, I'll take a brief hiatus

from my workout to open the door and let you in.

But as far as me helping you beyond that, impossible.

Hal: Whoa, where'd that come from?

Squeeks: What is it?

Nature Cat: It's Sadie's Nature Notebook!

With Sadie's notes about the bugs and birds

she's seen in the neighborhood.

Squeeks: (Gasps) Look at all this!

Butterflies, ladybugs, honeybees, bumblebees, moths.

Wow! And chickadees,

wrens and ruby-throated hummingbirds.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds!

Daisy: Hey yeah,

Sadie's notebook can tell us what kinds of

animals to attract since they are already in the neighborhood!

Nature Cat: But how?!

Deep Voice: Ahem. Turn the page.

Hal: Ooo! That mysterious voice sure is helpful!

Squeeks: Check it out!

Sadie's notes show where in the neighborhood

she saw these bugs and birds.

Hal: Oh! She saw a honeybee on a flower

that was on a strawberry plant!

Oh! And a wren eating a bug...

Nature Cat: Now we know what critters we should focus on,

the food they eat, and the places they take shelter.

Daisy: Guys, maybe to attract local birds and bugs,

we should put plants out here that grow in this neighborhood.

Squeeks: But can you even grow plants on a balcony?

Will rain reach the plants?

Will they get enough sun?

And what about the wind?

Ah! So many questions!

Nature Cat: Good points, Squeeks.

Let's do a quick "balcony okay for growing plants" check!

Nature Cat: Woah!

Nature Cat: It can get windy.

That must be why the other plants fell down<span tts:fontStyle="italic"> !

Daisy: Then we'll need sturdy plants in heavier pots

so they don't get blown over by the wind.

Squeeks: We're gonna need water for the plants and the animals.

Bue we can't just wait for it to rain?

Daisy: Copy that! So we need hardy plants

that don't need to be watered all the time.

Nature Cat: Hmm,

not a lot of tall buildings around to shade the balcony...

Daisy: Good observation, Nature Cat.

So sunlight is not a problem.

Looks like we should be able to grow plants here!

Nature Cat: Let's also hang a couple of plants that have vines

to create shelter in the corners.

And maybe if we put the flowering current over there,

a bird might build a nest next spring!

Daisy: I think we're in pretty sweet shape now.

Nature Cat: It's time to build our habitat.

Tally ho!
