[Squeeks]: The Legend of Cowboy Kitty.

[upbeat music]

Cowboy Kitty to the rescue!

Tally-ho!

Uh, why did you stop, Hal?

We're supposed to gallop off into the sunset!

You said the line wrong, Nature Cat.

You're supposed to say, "Yee-Haw!"

But you said, "Tally-ho!" Come on, baby.

You're right, Hal, my trusty old pal.

Let me try that again.

Cowboy Kitty to the rescue!

Yee-haw!

[neighing]

[upbeat music]

Wah!

Stop, Hal!

[gasps]

I said stop, Hal! Why won't you stop?!

If a cowboy wants a horse to stop,

he has to say, "Whoa!"

Whoa!

Whoa!

I really need to work on my lines.

Hey, Hal and Nature Cat,

what's with all the horsing around?

[laughs] Well, Squeeks,

today is the day I become a movie star!

Movie star? Sweet!

How are you going to become a movie star?

Because today, I'm auditioning for a big Hollywood director

to star in his latest movie, The Legend of Cowboy Kitty!

Yippee-kai-meow-meow!

[QB]: Okay, there he is!

Alright. That's my Cowboy Kitty!

That's my star!

Really? You want me to play Cowboy Kitty?

Yes! Alright, you've ruined me

for any other feline actor! Okay?

You are my Cowboy Kitty! Okay?

Let the filming of my masterpiece begin!

Where's my star?!

Here I am! Here is Cowboy Kitty.

Alright, Cowboy Kitty,

I want you to stand right here, okay, in front of this bush,

and do the highly dramatic scene with the townsfolk!

Uh-huh. Uh, who are the townsfolk?

Uh, you! You are my townsfolk!

But we're not even wearing costumes, sir.

[QB]: There! Now you're in costume!

Let's roll 'em!

Rolling A-Camera!

And... action!

Don't worry, sad townsfolk,

I shall save your troubled town,

or my name isn't Cowboy Kitty!

[QB]: Cut!

[sighs] I knew I was gonna have

this problem... This is wrong!

Okay? All wrong!

What's wrong? Is it the townsfolk?

- Us? - What?

We didn't even have any lines.

No! Everyone knows, okay,

if you want to make a Western epic, alright,

you need...

A rough and tumble cowboy star! Like moi!

No! No! No! What every Western needs, okay, is this!

[all]: A cactus?!

Yes! Nothing says "Wild West" like a cactus!

Oh no! I knew I was gonna have this problem.

Okay, I-I-I can't make my movie!

Okay, Cowboy Kitty, okay, is cancelled!

Wait, what? No! Don't cancel the movie!

Surely we can find a cactus somewhere.

Uh, where do cactuses grow in nature?

Many kinds of cactuses can grow where it's dry,

like in the desert!

Alright! Then we shall go to the desert, okay,

to make my masterpiece!

Mr. Bearantino, all due respect,

the desert is very far away.

Not a problem.

Bring in the helicopter!

[all]: Helicopter?!

Grab hold! To the desert!

Tally-ho!

Oops! I mean, yee-haw!

[Daisy]: Here we are, the desert!

Alright, QB, let's make Cowboy Kitty a star!

Whoa, whoa, whoa, not so fast!

Okay, first we need a cactus.

Alright? Where is the cactus?

Hey, isn't this is a cactus?

Yowch! It has prickles!

Alright, it must be a cactus! Let's make a movie!

Now for this scene, we need a horse.

Where can I find a horse?

[neighing]

[neighing]

Perfect! You shall play the horse.

Oh, goody! What's my name?

Uh, you have no name.

Wait, I'm a horse with no name?

[QB]: Cut!

What's wrong? Was it the horse?

Sorry, I work better when I have a name.

I need backstory.

I knew I was gonna have this problem.

Okay, I need a tall cactus for my movie.

That cactus isn't tall at all.

[breathing rapidly] That's it!

The movie is cancelled!

No! No cancelling!

We just need to find a tall cactus.

Daisy, where can we find a tall cactus?

Hmm. Says here the tallest cactus

in the United States is the saguaro cactus!

That's the cactus I need!

[Daisy]: The saguaro cactus can only be found

in one place in the whole world:

The Sonoran Desert.

Well, I guess that's it! The movie is cancelled.

Wait! Bring in the helicopter!

[Daisy]: Man-oh-man!

Look at all of the saguaro cactuses!

Whoa, look how tall this one is!!

[grunts]

Yowch!

[gasps] Look at this tiny cactus!

I wonder what kind it is.

Maybe it's a baby cactus.

Hello, baby cactus. I'm Hal!

You're such a cute, widdle, baby cactus.

Please stop talking to that saguaro cactus

like it's a baby! That cactus is ten years old!

[all]: Ten?!

When will it get really big?

It can take this cactus years or more

to grow to its full height.

- Wow! - Amazing!

I'm not sticking around for that.

Is it hard for something so small

to survive in the desert?

Young saguaro cactuses

have a tough time in the hot desert sun.

They get stepped on and even eaten!

But this little one should grow here protected

under this tree.

See ya!

Amazing!

What a heroic story

of survival against the harsh elements!

Yes, yes, that's all very interesting,

but isn't it time to focus on Cowboy Kitty?

Yes! Yes! Yes! Of course! Stand here, okay?

Oh, beautiful!

Ah, majestic!

It's perfect!

Oh, thank you!

[QB]: I was talking about the cactus!

Of course.

Action!

Cowboy Kitty will stand tall in the face of anything!

Ah! Rain!

Wow, the weather sure can change quickly in the desert.

Hey, uh, shouldn't we cut, QB?

No! No! No! This is fascinating.

The cactus seems to be swelling!

[QB]: Why is the cactus swelling?

Whoa! It says here it stores lots of rain water.

[Daisy]: To make room for all that water,

the cactus can expand like an accordion.

And then it lives off the water when it doesn't

rain for a long time.

Amazing!

The saguaro cactus is the master of survival!

Bravo, cactus! Bravo!

and she's feeding her babies there!

is food for the finch! Wow!

Not just me! Uh, woodpeckers, bats, tortoises,

you know, so many animals eat the cactus fruit.

It really helps us at a time when food

is pretty scarce, you know?

The saguaro cactus not only provides shelter,

but also provides food!

This is going to be the greatest movie ever made!

[gasps] The Legend of Cowboy Kitty

[gasps] Gasp!

The corn isn't growing like it used to.

and when they turn into adult beetles,

they eat the leaves.

They damage the roots and the leaves?

Oh, say it ain't so, Hugo!

Ah, but something else is going on, too.

This year, most of my corn seeds didn't even sprout!

And nothing's growing over there either.

Well, I've been planting my corn in the same field

for the last five years.

And the last time I let anything grow on that field

was when you came to visit.

But I didn't want weeds coming near my corn,

so I keep it bare now.

Well, something's not working...

I'm going in.

Okay, the soil does not look rich and dark

like the soil in Daisy's garden.

Going in again.

Nothing here.

Nothing here either.

And that's a problem.

Uh, well, why?

Well, I don't see any earthworms

or centipedes or any other critters

that help keep the soil healthy.

Yeah! Not seeing them means the plants

probably aren't getting all the nutrients they need.

And there aren't little creatures above ground

either, neither, like spiders and ladybugs.

Hmm, curious.

And come to think of it, I'm not seeing any birds

that like to eat all those bugs!

[Squeeks]: Yeah! Remember we counted kinds of birds

that one day we were here? Not today.

Hmm.... Really curious.

Uh, can we see that flashback again

from the last time we were here?

[indistinct whispering]

Right. Everyone, assume our remembering-flashback pose.

Ha!

[chirping, buzzing]

[Nature Cat]: Your farm used to remind me

of the meadow around Sunset Park.

Excuse me, can we split screen the flashback

with present day, please? Thank you so much.

Whoa! This really paints a picture for the kids at home!

Yeah! Look at all the different kinds of plants and wildlife

that were here before.

I think we have some clues to have a think on.

Back to the present! Ha!

There. So, what is different?

Well, before you had different kinds of plants

growing around the farm. And now, you just have corn.

So, uh... Ah-ha! Therein lies the difference.

Yes, I, uh, I only grow corn. I've been doing that for years!

Oh, hey!

Granny Bunny taught me to not plant the same thing

in the same place every year.

It's a way to keep the soil healthier.

It also can stop pests from doing too much damage.

I never knew that!

Hmm... So the meadow that used to grow here

had lots of plants and healthy soil.

And there were lots of bugs and other critters around.

Ah-ha! Maybe that is part of your farm's problem, Hugo.

When you didn't let your meadow grow back,

there was no more plant variety!

Ah-ha! And no plant variety led to no animal variety.

And as they say, variety is the spice of life!

Yes!

Well, I really want my own ah-ha moment.

That's not fair.

Oh, by all means, Hal!

Wait for it...

Wait for it...

Wait for it...

Ah-ha!

[Hal]: Remember Episode B?

We built the garden on Sadie's balcony?

Oh, and ah-ha-ha!

We used what we knew about nature

to make a little habitat that attracted birds and bugs.

Oh, and ah-ha-ha-ha!

We can do that here!

Phew!

That's a lot of ah-has, Hal.

Just rest, buddy.

Hal, you are a genius!

[sighs] And a tired one at that.

May I sum this up for Hugo and the viewers?

Okay... [clears throat]

So, to fix what is wrong with your farm,

we need to use nature as our guide!

We'll plant lots of different kinds of plants,

not just the one!

And we'll make your farm more like a natural habitat

where all kinds of animals can live.

And the birds will come back,

and they'll help with the corn-eating pests.

And that concludes my conclusion.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

Variety is the spice of life!

Oh, I cannot believe I did so many things wrong!

And I just don't know where to begin

to make my farm healthy again!

Never fear, Hugo!

We are here to help make your farm healthy!

Onward and farmward!

[Daisy]: Okay, so, for this season,

you'll plant the corn where your meadow used to be.

[Squeeks]: And on the old corn field,

you'll lay some compost.

And ah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Daisy taught me that planting beans

can also help the soil!

So we should plant beans in the old corn field!

Another ah-ha moment for me! In a corn field.

[Daisy]: If you let this area be a meadow,

you'll give a space for pollinators and birds

and other small animals.

The pollinators will help your beans grow.

The birds will eat the pests.

Remember, if we build it, they will come!

Who? Old-timey baseball players from the past
