FEMALE DISPATCHER ON RADIO: One-Adam-. One-Adam-, a in progress.

One-Adam-, handle code .

[SIREN WAILING]

-Do me a favor, will ya, Jim? -What?

I've got some new batteries back there. Put 'em in my flashlight, will ya?

You know, Pete, you better hope they never assign you to an L car.

Why?

'Cause you'd have to do all these technical police duties by yourself.

Just make sure you don't put the batteries in backwards.

Funny how people look like their dogs.

They even have the same color hair.

Don't you think they look alike?

-Pete? -Hmm?

Don't you think she looks like the dog?

I don't know. I haven't looked at the dog yet.

FEMALE DISPATCHER:Any unit in the vicinity of Mulholland and Havenhurst,

meet Air- on Tac .

We're close enough.

One-Adam-. We will meet Air- on Tac .

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, roger.

One-Adam- to Air-. Go.

PILOT: Roger, One-Adam-.

We've got a dirt bike riding the hills in a fire hazard area.

He's under tree cover now,

but we figure he'll break for Mulholland Drive anytime.

Can you come in from the east?

Roger, Air-. We're on our way.

Air-, we're approaching Mulholland now. Can you see us?

Roger, Adam-.

Turn left on Mulholland and hold your position.

You should be able to see him.

He's wearing a blue helmet, light blue shirt, jeans.

Roger, Air-.

[BIKE ENGINE REVVING]

One-Adam-. He's coming right at you. Can you see him?

Negative, Air-, but we can hear him.

We'll never catch him on these curves.

PILOT:One-Adam-. We have the suspect in view.

He is still on Mulholland a quarter of a mile ahead of you.

REED: Roger, Air-.

Air- to One-Adam-.

Adam-, go.

The bike split to a single story, cream colored house

mid block on Oakhurst.

Bike's now in the garage. The rider ran into the house.

Roger, Air-. Did you run the bike?

Roger, One-Adam-.

The bike's registered to a Kenneth Rule,

Oakhurst, no wants, no warrants.

Roger, Air-.

One-Adam-, shows code at Oakhurst.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, roger.

[SHOUTING]

She's gonna k*ll me.

The police!

Now, you see, don't you, Kenny? It's not just me.

He was bragging about fooling your helicopter,

thought he got away. That's how I found out about it.

I didn't do anything. I just went for a little ride.

Little ride?

Officers, tell him about brush fires.

Tell him what a "little ride" could do around here.

You've never seen a brush fire, have you, son?

I've told him a hundred times!

I've told him again and again how dangerous these hills are

when the brush dries out but he won't listen to me.

He always knows better.

She always makes such a big thing out of everything.

Not this time. Bet on it.

I lived through the Bel Air fire.

Walls of flame everywhere.

There was no stopping it. Nothing was left.

He won't believe me.

I can't explain to him. You tell him. Maybe he'll listen to you.

She acts as if I were playing with matches or something out there.

I was just dirt riding.

It's almost as bad.

A spark from a rock or the exhaust. Doesn't take much.

See? I wasn't exaggerating. Well, the motorcycle goes.

Mom!

Wait a minute. There's plenty of places you can ride.

He's right. Dirt tracks with inclines and trails.

No, Sir. No more. I've reached the limit.

Anyway, you're gonna have to sell the motorcycle to pay for the fine.

I'm not gonna pay for it.

What fine?

Do you think they're here for nothing?

They're gonna give you a ticket.

Not a ticket, but an application for complaint will be made

to the City Attorney's Office.

Do you have a driver's license?

You see?

Now, maybe, next you'll listen to me.

I'll notify Air-.

I bet your mother wasn't that bad.

You should have listened to her. She was right.

That's the trouble. She's always right.

One-Adam- to Air-.

PILOT: One-Adam-, go.

Air-, the suspect's been located

and a complain application is being made.

Thanks for standing by K.M.A.

Roger, One-Adam-. Thanks for the assist. K.M.A.

Just a minute, Officer.

I wanna talk to you about the helicopter of yours.

Yes, sir. Could I have your name?

I'm Ed Mason. I live right over there.

You got any idea how much trouble that thing causes?

What the noise is like when you're inside a house?

Yes, sir. But the helicopter does important work.

And television!

You know what it does to television reception when it's flying around?

Yes, sir, but sometimes it can't be helped.

Don't tell me what can't be helped! Let me tell you something.

There are lots of us who are fed up with it. Fed up to the teeth.

What's he doing up there today, anyway? Flapping around, that's all.

No, sir. That's not all.

Without the helicopter we wouldn't have known

that a boy was riding his motorcycle up there in those hills.

I don't have to tell what a fire would mean around these areas, do I?

Loud, flapping noisemakers, that's all they are.

What's the sense talking to you?

Well, do you think you convinced that guy?

I don't believe he heard a word of what I said.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, One-Adam-. Unknown trouble.

Savoy Theatre, Hinton Street. Code .

One-Adam-, roger.

-No cashier. -Yeah.

Officers, I called.

Just can't figure it out.

What's wrong?

I came up to buy a ticket about minutes ago.

And found the place like this.

Now, the movie's going on

and there's no sign of Tom Holmes, the manager.

Or Nancy, the ticket girl.

What's your name?

John. John Wager.

I'm retired.

I work part-time at the drug store across the street.

Okay, Mr. Wager. We'll check it out.

[INDISTINCT TALKING OVER SCREEN]

Few people inside.

Let's check upstairs.

[MUFFLED SCREAMING]

[MUFFLED SCREAMING]

-Mr. Holmes? -Right.

Thank God, you guys showed up.

No telling how long we'd have been here otherwise.

MALLOY: What happened?

It was the craziest thing.

This guy pulls up on a motorcycle, comes right in at us,

puts a cannon in my face, and demands all the money.

We'll need some information for a broadcast.

How long ago did it happen?

About minutes ago, wasn't it, Nancy?

Did you get a license number?

No, but it was a new bike, it was gray.

What did the guy look like?

He was dark haired,

about pounds, five feet, ten.

Wearing a blue denim jacket,

orange motorcycle helmet, with bubble face shield.

Riding a gray motorcycle.

Suspect armed with a . caliber a*t*matic.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, roger.

What's the problem, Officer? Was I speeding?

No, ma'am. There was a robbery occurred near here

and a motorcycle like this was used.

Well, I'm not a robber. My name is Loretta Fox.

Here's my registration and driver's license.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: All units, all frequencies. Stand by.

One-X-Ray- is in pursuit. sh*ts fired.

MALE DISPATCHER:One-X-Ray- is in pursuit of a suspect

on a gray motorcycle.

Westbound on Sepulveda approaching Balboa.

Sorry.

I think I'll get off the street before I'm stopped again.

Be a good idea.

MALE DISPATCHER:One-X-Ray-. Your transmission was covered.

All units stand by. One-X-Ray-, go.

WOODS: One Xray-.

Suspect is westbound on Sepulveda now crossing Woodman.

DISPATCHER: One-X-Ray-, roger. Do you have a license number?

WOODS:One-X-Ray-. Negative.

Suspect has just turned into the Palmwood Estates area.

Request backup to converge this area.

DISPATCHER: One-X-Ray-, roger. All units...

There's no way out of there. They got him.

Just turned into Palmwood Estates. Requesting backup.

Where are you going?

There is a way out. The pedestrian tunnel.

[COCKING g*n]

Right, over on your face, arms straight out at your sides!

Let's go! Move!

MALE DISPATCHER:Any unit in the vicinity assist One-X-Ray-.

The suspect escaped through the pedestrian tunnel

at Penmar and the freeway.

Why don't you tell them we'll handle it?

[REED SCOFFS]

There's that matched set again.

She sure does a lot of window shopping.

I'll bet that dog's legs are ready to drop off.

No way. Not a Scottie.

Oh?

They have tremendous endurance.

You send a Scottie down a hole

after a gopher or a badger and he won't come out till he's got him.

He'll die down there before he'll give up.

-Is that so? -Yeah.

And you wanna know something else about Scotties?

Not really.

You don't?

Jim, you may not believe this, but you've already told me more about Scotties

than I care to know.

Oh, Pete,

you don't know what you're missing.

FEMALE DISPATCHER:Any unit in the vicinity, code at Riverton.

Sumner Department Store.

Let's buy that.

One-Adam- will handle the code at Riverton.

One-Adam-, roger, and meet Air- on Tac .

One-Adam-, roger.

One-Adam- to Air-. Go.

PILOT:Air- to One-Adam-. What's your ETA?

Ten minutes give or take. What's yours?

We'll be there in two.

We'll maintain surveillance until you get here.

Roger, Air-.

WOODS: One-X-Ray- to Air-.

PILOT: Air- to One-X-Ray-. Go.

WOODS: We're backing up One-Adam- with approximate same ETA.

PILOT: Roger, One-X-Ray-.

One-X-Ray-, roger.

One-Adam-, to Air-.

PILOT: Air- to One-Adam-, go.

ETA two minutes. Any activity?

Looks clear.

Mall and parking area clear.

No visible activity.

Roger, Air-.

REED: Cover the side entrance.

WOODS: Right.

[GROANING] Don't sh**t, don't sh**t.

Take it easy.

Get an ambulance.

[MOANING]

MALLOY: Take it easy.

[GASPING] Two of them. One black, one white.

Skinny one had red hair.

Black guy says, "Tie him up."

And the other one couldn't be bothered.

Oh!

Anything to add?

Two men, one black, one white

with red hair, thin, that's all he said before he d*ed.

Nothing about a car?

Nothing.

Got away so fast they probably took the sign and alarm on the way out.

REED: How much did they get?

Don't know yet. Looks like the guards surprised him.

PILOT:Air- to One-L-. Air- to One-L-.

One-L- to Air-. Go.

Just spotted a man running toward a Ford sedan.

Gold, sitting in an empty lot two blocks northwest of you.

Hang on, must be a driver inside.

It's moving to meet the man.

He's getting in the passenger's side.

Now it's hit the street, heading south on Hammond.

Roger, Air-. You heard it. Go.

Right.

PILOT: Air- to One-L-.

We now have a second vehicle.

White pick-up truck just left a lot north of you

proceeding east on Sherman Way.

MACDONALD:Roger, Air-.

You and Adam- stay with your vehicle.

One-X-Ray- will cover the pickup.

PILOT:Roger, One-L-.

Suspect turning west on Winston.

One-Adam-, turn west on Harper.

Roger, Air-.

PILOT:One-Adam-, suspect has pulled into apartment parking lot.

No, he's backing out.

Okay, he's going back the way he came.

I knew it couldn't be that easy.

One-Adam-, proceed west to Collingwood,

turn north and intercept on Winston.

One-Adam-, suspect proceeding east on Winston, approaching underpass.

One-Adam-, roger Air-. Have you got a license?

Negative, One-Adam-.

Winston coming up.

Air- to One-Adam-. Suspect entered underpass on Winston.

Hasn't come out. I'm swinging back.

One-Adam-, roger.

They're playing that chopper like a trout.

Should be right in front of us.

MALLOY: Police! Out of the car with your hands in the air!

Let's go! Move.

[WOMAN GIGGLING]

What's the joke?

We knew you were coming, we knew it.

That helicopter,

it kept going this way and that, like a kite.

Huh? A big kite with a long string on it.

Our string.

[BOTH LAUGHING]

Had you going, didn't we? That's the funniest thing I ever did.

Who did you think we were?

Bonnie and Clyde?

Who owns this car?

She does. She does.

You have some identification?

Take it out of the wallet.

Let's see yours.

Just hand me the purse.

[COUGHS]

Take the wallet out and show me the ID.

Yes, sir, Officer.

Here you are.

CHARLEY: What are you going to do? Arrest us for m*rder or something?

-We didn't do anything illegal. -ELIZABETH: Yeah.

CHARLEY: Not even a traffic violation.

You just saw the chopper and thought you'd play games with it.

Charley said it would follow us. I didn't believe him.

What did you think we'd done?

sh*t somebody?

That's right. That's exactly what we thought.

You're kidding.

A department store was robbed

two blocks from where you began your little game.

The night watchman was k*lled.

You mean, that chopper was really looking for somebody?

Yeah. For the guys who sh*t the night watchman.

You're not making this up, are you?

You mean somebody was really k*lled?

-For real? -For real.

Suddenly it's not so funny, is it?

[REED SIGHS]

Don't let it bug you.

[SCOFFS] Six-year-olds act with more sense.

I know.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: All units cancel want

on the m*rder suspects that occurred this date.

One-X-Ray- has suspects in custody.

At least somebody got him.

Yeah.

Pete.

-Scottie again. -Yeah.

-[DOG BARKS] -Hello, dog.

Hello, dog. Where's your owner?

Maybe she deserted it.

I don't think so.

Let's check her out.

Wait a minute.

What're you doing?

I got a hunch.

[BARKING]

Clever.

[BARKING]

MALLOY: If you're shopping for furs, lady, it's a little late in the evening.

Yep. Those Scotties are great little detectives.

They may be great detectives, but they sure are rotten lookouts.
