FEMALE DISPATCHER ON RADIO: One-Adam-. One-Adam-, a in progress.

One-Adam-, handle code .

[SIREN WAILING]

One-Adam-. Day watch clear.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, One-X-ray-,

One-X-ray-, clear.

Sounds like a new girl.

Yeah.

-Did she ever clear us? -I didn't hear her.

One-Adam-. Do you show us clear?

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-. Negative.

One-Adam-. Day watch. Clear.

Must be a trainee.

One-X-ray-, One-X-ray-, see the man.

-E, ,

/ West Ferndale.

She's all right.

Huh!

Anyone can give a -E call. Wait till she has to handle a pursuit.

I didn't mean that.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, clear.

I meant that. She has a nice voice.

One-Adam-, One-Adam-, traffic accident with injury.

Hillcrest near Cherimoya.

One-Adam-, roger.

Clear the street, please.

Let me see what happened.

I brought these, they might help.

Just the blanket.

I'm Mrs. Anderson. I just called her mother.

They just live a couple of blocks up.

-Did you see what happened? -No, I heard it though.

First the brakes. You know how they go.

-And then an awful thud, awful. -[SIREN WAILING]

I always use ice on cuts and bleeding.

We'll wait for the ambulance.

I see her and her brother pass by here every day.

That's him over there on the curb.

It was a hit and run by a blue sedan, I'll get it on the air.

Are you okay?

-What's your name? -Tommy Jeffords.

These men are going to take good care of your sister.

So you don't have to be frightened, okay?

TOMMY: Okay.

You know anything about cars, Tommy?

Did you see this one?

It was a blue Ford.

Did you notice anything else?

Like what, for instance?

The license.

You remember it?

IOV.

Are you sure?

Policeman Bill taught us to make a sentence out of the letters

and a price tag out of the numbers.

So for $., I owned a violin.

This is One-Adam- requesting warrants, warrants and DMV...

I can stay with him until his mother comes.

Thank you, Mrs. Anderson.

What kind of man would go off and leave a child like that?

I don't know. We're sure going to try and find out.

One-Adam-, clear.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, clear.

-I'd like to meet her. -[SCOFFS]

-Come on! -She sounds great.

Pete, how many times we've been through this?

Okay, I'm an optimist.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, One-Adam-,

see the man, report,

, North Van Arden at the synagogue.

One-Adam-, roger.

Morning, I'm Rabbi Gerstein.

I'm Officer Malloy, this is my partner Officer Reed.

-You had a burglary? -Yes.

Uh, would our own hats be okay?

Of course.

Thank you.

Somebody broke into our office last night.

You locked up last night?

Yes. Around :.

We found it like this, this morning

when we came in at :.

Can I have your first name, sir?

Myer. M-Y-E-R.

What was taken?

$ from the stamp box and our typewriter.

Can you describe the typewriter?

Was it a standard office model?

Yes, it was a black manual.

What was the make?

Odd, isn't it? You look at a thing day in and day out.

I don't know.

Has anybody touched the stamp box?

Nobody's touched a thing.

There may be prints on it. I'll have somebody come over from the lab and check it.

Well, I'm afraid I can't do that, either.

This isRosh Hashanah, the high holy days.

And we're not allowed to have any work done.

It wouldn't be much.

But we're a very strict congregation.

If you would just sign here.

I'm afraid I can't do that, either.

I can make a report without it.

It's only fair to tell you, sir, without the serial number,

there isn't much chance of getting your typewriter back.

I suppose so.

Oh, wait a minute.

Um, the typewriter had a special typeface.

It only writes Hebrew.

That'll make it a lot easier to identify.

Thank you.Shalom!

Hi, Deacon.

Hi, I just busted your hit and run suspect.

-Where? -About four blocks from his house.

Man, that dude is something else.

He must have talked five minutes nonstop about why he took off.

Lawyer's fees, court costs, insurance premium.

He even blamed the kid's mother for not being more responsible.

He doesn't care that that little girl's gonna

spend the next six months in the hospital, huh?

He didn't even ask if she was alive.

How about some handball tonight, Reed?

-Fine, you're on. -How about you, Malloy?

Oh, I got a little investigation going.

Hey, you guys need a fourth for your bridge game?

I was just coming to look for you, Mac.

Oh, yeah? What for?

I was told to see you about some time off.

Who told you to see me?

The Thumb.

The Thumb?

All right, who's The Thumb?

Well, I was down the hall at the lieutenant's office

and I asked him about it and he said...

[LAUGHING]

Well, Deacon, he didn't mean me.

He just meant, "Get out!"

That goes for all of you.

There's citizens out there to protect and to serve. Go!

But, Mac...

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, One-Adam-,

a -W, , Labrecter.

Labrecter?

There's no such street in the division.

That new development, maybe.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, did you receive your call?

One-Adam-, request the spelling of the street.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-,

Lincoln, Adam, Boy, Robert, Edward, Adam,

Tom, Edward, Robert.

One-Adam-. Be advised that street name is La Brea Terrace.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, roger.

She's starting to bug me.

It's probably her first day.

Be a little tolerant.

I bet she's a tall brunette like Sophia Loren.

Uh-huh. Remember the one you said sounded like Raquel Welch?

She did.

Yeah, and then after a full week you finally got to see her.

It was a wasted effort. I admit it.

[LAUGHING]

Five feet tall, weighed in around pounds.

If you kept your eyes closed the illusion was perfect.

How you doing?

Hi, Officers. I'm okay.

You had a little too much to drink?

Oh, no. I'm lost is all.

What's your name?

Mrs. Henry A. Halsman.

I'm lost. I'm just resting.

Can you stand up?

Well, certainly.

Smashed!

Let's get her into the car.

Okay, here we go.

[SOBBING] Mary, I got to find Mary.

Find Mary.

Mary. I gotta find Mary.

Who's Mary?

My baby. My baby girl.

-What's your first name? -Huh?

Your first name, what do your friends call you?

Carolyn.

Take me to her. She's close.

What's her address?

My purse...

[SOBBING]

What's your daughter's last name?

King.

Oh, and I love her so much.

Address is on Valley View.

Okay, let's go see.

[CONTINUES SOBBING]

All right, watch your head.

There you go.

Mrs. King?

Yes?

I believe we have your mother in the car.

I have to talk to you.

Is she drunk?

The police!

She's never done this before.

Do I have to take her?

No.

You know what she wants?

She wants me to leave my husband and come back and live with her.

Will she go to jail?

Well, in her present condition we can't leave her on the street.

She'll flop all over the place, maul the kids,

I'll get her into bed, she'll sober up and then she'll be on my back again.

She drinks because she's lonely. She thinks it's my fault.

Yes, ma'am.

I begged her. I pleaded with her,

accept that I'm married.

It's nothing for us to fight about.

I don't know what to do.

Mary, baby, please.

One-Adam-, requesting code .

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, standby.

Oh, come on, lady. You got a couple of hungry cops here.

Then there was that other one with the cute voice.

She turned up with buck teeth.

-Just a mild overbite. -[LAUGHS]

And a hundred pounds spread over '".

She was slender. What's your point?

You wasted your time then, and you're wasting it now.

I'm counting on the law of averages. I'm due for a winner.

One-Adam-, okay .

One-Adam-, roger.

Just in time. There's T.J.'s wagon.

Hey, Reed, Malloy, how's it going?

Hi, T.J. What do you got that's left over from yesterday?

Oh, come on, Reed. I stock a fresh line every day.

-You got a roast beef on rye? -Yeah.

Malloy?

I'll have one of these.

Malloy?

I really want to thank you for getting me this job.

You know, people don't want to hire an ex-con today.

He only did it to keep you from caperin'.

You were getting too tricky for him to catch.

No foolin'. This is a great job.

I get to travel all over the city. Meet all kinds of people.

A lot of my customers are policemen.

Don't take credit.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-X-ray-. No further information on your -E.

Is that the new girl everybody's talking about?

Who's talking about?

Oh, she's the big news.

That voice is driving everybody crazy.

See, I may have waited too long.

As soon as we get done here, I'm going to call Denton in Communications

and find out who she is.

Hey, before you go.

There was a guy in here a while back,

he's not one of my regulars, but every now and then.

He's a painter over at Mammoth Movie Studios.

He got laid off due to the cut back

and he claims there were five or six guys who should have got the axe before him

'cause he had seniority.

Well, he's a blowhard, you know.

And he may have been sounding off because he was a little drunk,

but he said he was gonna go get his r*fle and put a little air into their heads.

In whose heads?

His bosses. Now he may just have been bluffing,

-but I don't... -MALLOY: What's the guy look like?

Uh, about ,

tanned shirt, dark slacks,

about your build. I don't know what his name is.

Thanks, T.J. We'll check it out.

Hey, let me know what happens.

What do you think?

Let's go over and talk to studio security.

What do you got, Woods?

The guard flagged us down.

He got a call that some guy climbed over the south fence.

Any description?

Nope. You know how people are,

it's probably some autograph hound looking for Rock Hudson.

[g*n f*ring]

That's funny, he said no one's filming back there today.

Let's go.

Some nut just sh*t two of my painters.

What do you call this area?

It's the German Square.

And where the sh**ting was?

European Street.

One-Adam-, officers need assistance.

We have a barricaded sn*per at , West Barham, at the studio.

He's armed with a r*fle and has wounded two men.

Our location is what the studio calls German Square.

Request an ambulance, a supervisor, and SWAT teams.

Warn responding units to steer clear of what they call European Street. KMA.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, roger.

We left Roy on the corner a couple of blocks over.

-He still alive? -Yeah.

One-Adam-. Have responding units meet me on Tac Two.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, roger.

Units responding to , West Barham,

meet One-Adam- on Tac Two.

DEACON:One-Mary- to One-Adam-, go.

One-Adam- to One-Mary-, what's your location?

Highland passing Orange.

Come up Cahuenga and cover that east side fence.

Watch yourself. He's got a clear field of fire out to the street.

Roger. ETA's like two minutes.

MALLOY: Roger.

MACDONALD: One-L- to One-Adam-.

One-Adam- to One-L-.

Mac, we're going to try to get the other wounded man out.

MACDONALD:Use your judgment.

I'll be at the gate in about three minutes.

Roger.

No way!

Lieutenant.

We got a tip from an informant about a possible suspect.

He's a male Caucasian wearing a tanned shirt and dark pants.

Okay, it sounds like the same guy.

Looks like I can get up into here without any trouble.

All right, we'll give you a few seconds to attract his attention

and then we'll move in.

-Woods? -Yeah?

-Find a good position up top. -Right, Lieutenant.

You didn't see him?

No, he fired a couple of sh*ts at us.

-r*fle? -Yes.

He's probably staying well back from the window in the shadows.

R--David, requesting additional ambulance.

And notify the fire department to have an engine standby at this location.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: R--David, roger.

MACDONALD ON BULLHORN: This is the police.

We have this area surrounded.

Give yourself up and you will not be hurt.

WOODS:R--David, first two streets look clear.

MACDONALD:Put down your w*apon and come out into the open with your hands up.

Okay, Malloy, try and get him out.

MACDONALD:I repeat,

put down your w*apon and you will not be hurt.

The area is surrounded.

Any further resistance is useless.

Now give it up or you'll just get hurt.

You're not doing yourself any good trying to hold out.

Put down your w*apon and come out into the open

with your hands up and you will not be hurt.

[g*n f*ring]

Did anybody see him this time?

No, sir, but he's somewhere in the building on the west side.

We've got time. It won't be dark for a couple of hours.

We want him alive, but don't stick your neck out.

Take it slow and easy. We'll go street by street over toward that open square.

-REED: Freeze, mister! -[g*n FIRES]

MALLOY: Throw the r*fle out.

You, behind the pillar, you're trapped. Throw it out or you're dead.

Come on out with your hands on top of your head.

Come on, move.

Now down the steps, nice and slow.

You're doing fine. Keep your hands away from your body.

Keep coming.

Hold it right there. Down on the ground

flat on your face, arms straight out from your sides.

BETTY: You're day watch officers?

Yes.

That sh**ting out at the studio, is everybody all right?

Oh, yes. Fine.

Oh, that's good.

We probably talked today. I'm in Communications.

Betty Edwards.

I'm handling Frequency One.

The law of averages, partner.

Hmm?

It's just a little private thing.

-I'm Pete Malloy. -Hello.

-Jim Reed. -How do you do?

You're new.

First day.

Well, you're doing a very good job.

Thank you.

MALLOY: All you need is a little more time.

Say, how would you like a ride in a police car?

That'd be good experience for you,

give you a feeling of what it's really like out in the field.

[LAUGHS] I think I have a pretty good idea.

From my husband.

Your husband?

Lieutenant Edwards. He's with SWAT.

-Oh! -Betty.

Honey!

EDWARDS: Hi BETTY: Hi.

I'd like you to meet Pete Malloy, Jim Reed.

-We've met. -Oh.

We spent the day being movie stars.

[BOTH LAUGH]

-All set, honey? -Mmm-hmm.

See you guys around.

Bye now.

Well, was I right about the voice matching the looks?

I told you I'd pick a winner.

A winner? She's married, Pete.

I thought you were playing the averages.

That's one right guess and one wrong. I'm batting .

That's better than my old average.

Wait a minute...
