FEMALE DISPATCHER ON RADIO: One-Adam-, One-Adam-, a in progress.

One-Adam-, handle code .

[SIREN WAILING]

I'll see you guys inside,

I've got to stay here and cool her down.

I see, you guys picked up quite a bit for your report.

It's a start.

Do you ever land and go into foot pursuit?

No, that's strictly movie stuff.

On the ground, we'd just be worth two more cops.

In the air, we're worth .

Turn around, Chet.

Burbank Tower just called.

Some clown stole a private plane

and took off right into the path of an incoming .

The jet had to abort touchdown.

Burbank re-routed him to LAX.

That's all we need. Got a registration?

Yeah, November, . Belongs to Brywil Leasing.

No, we'll need two ships.

Whoever the guy is he's all over the sky.

Burbank has him on radar.

You go with Walters, Pete. You fill him in, right?

-Reed, you go with Mills in Air-. -Right.

Let's move it.

[SIREN WAILING]

Some guy stole a plane at Burbank airport.

Almost cracked into an incoming jet.

They've got him on radar. Jim's going with Mills in Air-.

Okay.

Will Burbank radar give us a fix?

Give us a vector, not much else.

Have to have visual contact.

We'll need all the eyes we can get.

Burbank approach, Police-.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: Go ahead, Police-.

Request vectors to the suspect aircraft.

Police-, Burbank Approach.

Your target is :,

your position, Van Norman Dam area.

Thank you, Burbank.

We are squawking at .

Police-, squawk .

MILLS: Burbank approach, Police-.

Where do you want us?

FEMALE DISPATCHER: Police-, squawk .

MILLS:All units on Tac-, stand-by.

Air units in pursuit of stolen aircraft.

Air- meet One-L- on Tac-.

Air- to One L-, go.

-Malloy? -Right, Mac.

Burbank PD got a make on your suspect.

Harvey Pollard.

He's rented planes from Brywil Leasing before.

Today the manager refused him,

says Pollard appeared to have been drinking.

We contacted Pollard's wife, sent a unit to pick her up.

They're bringing her to Van Nuys Airport KMA.

MALLOY:Roger, One-L-.

Air-, clear.

What do we do when we catch up with him?

Try to keep him away from a populated area

until he decides to sit down.

Burbank approach, Police-.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: Go ahead, Police-.

Still no contact.

Roger, Police-.

Target is now upper Van Norman Reservoir,

: your position.

Appears to be South-east bound.

You should intercept in two miles.

Thank you, Burbank.

Did you copy, Chet?

Loud and clear.

Southeast bound will take him back to Burbank.

Maybe he's calling it a day.

WALTERS: We should be so lucky.

Got him, a red and white job, :.

Lie's about ,. Estimate two miles.

We have him.

Number's November,

Air- to Air-.

Registration checks.

MILLS: He's changing course, climbing.

WALTERS:Evasive action, Chet.

Clear out, Chet, the guy's a nut.

We've got the speed to stay with him.

Air-, dropping to , out for police heliport.

He's all yours, Lou.

At least we've got him headed back where he can't do any damage

to someone else if he cracks up.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: Burbank approach to Police-.

Go, Burbank.

Your target is transmitting on ..

Roger, Burbank.

POLLARD: Keep them away from me.

I'm warning you I don't care what happens to me,

just keep them away!

Police copter to November, .

We copied your transmission, Mr. Pollard.

You just came within a hair of k*lling yourself

and the men aboard the other police copter.

POLLARD:I'm sorry, the sun was in my eyes,

I didn't see the helicopter until the last second,

I don't want to hurt anyone

except maybe myself.

Have you been drinking Mr. Pollard?

Yes, I just had a couple, in a bar.

Do you think you're in condition to land the aircraft?

What difference does it make?

Nobody cares.

Just leave me alone.

All I have is Ethel, years of Ethel.

I can't take anymore.

All I mean to her is a meal ticket.

MACDONALD:Malloy, I have Mrs. Pollard at Van Nuys Tower.

POLLARD: I don't want to talk to her, I'm turning off the radio.

Don't do that, Mr. Pollard, at least hear what she has to say.

ETHEL:Don't you dare

turn that radio off on me, Harvey Pollard!

-Oh, brother... -Are you listening to me, Harvey?

MACDONALD:Mrs Pollard, I think you ought to try and...

I'm not interested in what you think, Officer.

Go ahead, Harvey, k*ll yourself, see if I care.

You've got some nerve,

having me brought down here in a police car,

like a common criminal.

What are the neighbors going to think, they all saw it.

Are you listening to me, Harvey?

He's turning.

ETHEL:Harvey? Answer me!

I heard you, Ethel.

And do you know what I'm going to do?

Whatever it is, I'm sure it will be something stupid.

I'm going to let the police put me in jail.

It will be the first vacation I've had from you in years.

I'm looking forward to it.

And when I get out,

I'm going to see a lawyer about a divorce.

Good-bye, Ethel.

I'll send you a post card from the jail.

The worm turns.

Police copter to November, . Do you read me?

POLLARD:Yes, Officer.

Where do you want me to land? Back at Burbank?

Negative. Put down at Whiteman airpark.

-We'll get you clearance. -Thank you.

I hope I didn't cause you officers too much trouble.

Air- requesting a fire truck

and police unit stand by at Whiteman airpark.

Suspect's plane is a red, white and blue decathlon.

Registration number November, .

MALE DISPATCHER: Roger, Air-.

Air-, clear on Tac .

Roger, Air-.

All units, Tac is clear.

They've got him in custody at Whiteman airpark.

Yeah, we heard it.

-Where's your pilot? -Getting some coffee.

What happened to Mrs. Pollard?

She took a cab home.

Didn't want the neighbors to see her in a black and white again.

You wanna go for ADW on him?

Mills says no. The guy was headed into the sun,

and we're sure he didn't know we were there.

Okay, we'll turn him over to Burbank PD on Grand Theft.

The FAA will want him too,

on that that had to dodge him.

Anyone hurt?

Couple bruises, nothing serious.

That pilot really had to bend the plane out that kook's way.

How's the report coming?

Picking up quite a bit, Mac.

You know they can tell you a lot and you can read a lot,

but there's nothing like being there.

If this plan goes through, you gotta be the first up.

I'd like to.

Do you think they'll have time to take each guy in the Division?

One man from each car would help.

Then they should follow it up by roll call

with the pilot or observer to tell us where we can improve.

-Hi, Mac. -Hi, Mills. How's it going?

Fine. You know, we might steal Reed.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: Air-, meet Air- on Tac .

Air-, roger.

Air- to Air-, come in.

MALLOY:Air- to Air-.

A just went down

and the suspects have switched to jump cars.

We're following the blue Mustang convertible.

Request you tail a Ford LTD black over green

last seen West-bound on Foothill.

Air- to Air-, roger, we're en route.

See you later, Mac.

Okay, Sky King.

Suspects are now headed North-bound on Levy.

Request code at Foothill and Levy.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: Roger, Air-.

-Air- to . -MALLOY:Go, .

Green Ford is traveling at a normal rate of speed.

West-bound on foothill boulevard.

He hasn't made us yet.

He's about ten blocks from the address we got from DMV.

Looks like he's headed home.

MALLOY: You stick with him, we'll follow the blue convertible.

Cancel the code on Foothill and Levy.

Suspects are now headed North-bound on Glendale avenue.

MAN:One-King- to Air-.

Go, King-.

We are code across from his home at Tacoma.

We have a backup a couple of blocks away.

Roger, King-.

He's straight out of Woodstock.

Three blocks from your position.

MAN: I see him, back off, Air-,

don't want to spook him at the last minute.

Roger, we'll wide orbit until you have them in custody.

MAN:It's a , Air-, nice job, thanks.

Any time, King-. KMA.

Do we give Air- an assist?

Nope, they can handle it.

Two birds in the same area just complicates things.

Air- is clear and out for Police Heliport.

Climbing at , East-bound over Whitsett.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: Air-, clear.

[TIRES SCREECHING]

Air- requesting units to seal off Glendale.

South-bound at James Street. North bound at Chase Street.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: Air-, roger.

Any units that can seal off the area,

Glendale South-bound at James.

And North-bound at Chase street, identifying.

They've had it but just don't know it yet.

Suspects have entered the Briardell Tract.

Request units to seal off Briardell Road and Glenview Way.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: Air-, roger.

All units, suspects have entered Briardell track.

They got him.

MACDONALD: L- to air unit, he still in there?

Affirmative, you've got him sealed.

All units, the suspects are now on foot.

block, Kilmer Lane.

MALLOY:You've had it, Mister. Stay right where you are.

One suspect is in the pool, behind the fifth house

from the southwest corner of Kilmer and Jay.

MACDONALD: Where's the other one, Air-?

One-L-, the other suspect went into the garage,

fourth house from the North-west corner.

Nobody in there, Air-,

and there's no door into the house.

I think you lost him.

Not a chance, L-. We'd have seen him.

He's gotta be in here.

MACDONALD:Air-,

we've checked the rafters, the garden tools,

even moved the Christmas tree ornaments.

You lost him.

Now way, L-. Look again.

All right, Air-. We were both right.

He was still in the area, but he wasn't in the garage.

He crawled out a side window and hid in those bushes.

Let's face it.

You never would have found him

if it hadn't been for the eye of the old eagle up here.

And you never would have caught him

if it hadn't been for the nose of the old bloodhound down here.

Thanks for the assist.

KMA.

Oh, Malloy,

we tried to reach you at home.

Your Watch Commander just called,

wants you back on PM tonight. They're short handed.

A couple of flu cases and one of your guys TA'd.

Who was it?

Eh, Snyder.

Nothing serious, just shook up.

Only me?

Yeah. Just you. Reed's going up tonight.

Sorry to disappoint you, Malloy.

Just my luck, and here I was, all ready to solo.

Sorry, Red Baron, next time.

I'm putting you with Lou Walters.

-I'll see you later, partner. -Okay.

Hey, wait a minute! How am I going to get home?

I'll find a ride from somebody.

Okay, if you don't then call me. I'll swing by.

Will do.

We've got the industrial areas tonight.

They've been hit pretty hard by 's last couple of weeks.

Think you've got the night-sun control down?

-I'll do my best. -Okay.

Police-, off police heliport,

Northbound, climbing to on the Golden street freeway.

Roger.

With the amount of action we've had tonight,

you could've stayed in the helicopter.

I'm not complaining, Jerry.

Reed seems pretty happy with his experiment.

Yeah. I was helping him with his report this morning.

He's into his th page.

That much?

He isn't leaving out much.

He wants more banks to put their address on their roofs.

In fact, he'd like to see some addresses in back yards.

Addresses are the hardest things to see up there.

That's even tough for me on the ground.

I'm sure the Department will go for his rotating plan.

It's a natural.

Once you see how the helicopter can help you,

you'll depend on it like the radio.

Everybody fights change.

I bet it was that way when the radios first came in back in the 's.

I bet the guys resisted them at first,

but when you found out what you could do with them,

I'll bet you're all for them, wouldn't you, Mac?

[CHUCKLES]

Okay, you guys, get out there. You've been here long enough.

You're a sore head.

It takes a little time

to get used to the kickback of the running lights.

Yeah, I'm getting the hang of it.

Smell it?

Smoke.

Yeah, a building, somewhere,

different smell than a brush or wood fire.

REED: To the right, about :.

Air- requesting fire units,

the block, Cooperville Road, fire in residence.

We have a structure on fire.

And have One-Adam- and One-X-Ray- meet us on Tac .

FEMALE DISPATCHER: Air-, roger. One-Adam- and One-X-Ray-.

One-Adam- and One-X-Ray-, meet Air- on Tac .

WOODS: One-Adam- to Air-, go.

We've got a fire on Coopertown, the block.

What's you location?

Roger, Air-, ETA two minutes.

BRINKMAN:One-X-Ray- to Air-.

Air- to One-X-Ray-, go.

Roger, Air-.

We've heard and have an ETA of five minutes.

Roger. KMA.

WALTERS: Spreading fast.

Yeah.

REED:Attention, this is the police.

We have a house on fire spreading rapidly.

Get out, repeat, get out, now!

[SIREN WAILING]

How'd you know Malloy and Woods were around?

That's one thing I'm gonna include in my report for you guys.

Always know whose area you're over

and which units are clear.

-You okay, Pete? -Yeah.

Something else for Reed to include in his report.

bucks for a new jacket.
