FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-. One-Adam-, a in progress.

One-Adam-, handle code .

[SIRENS WAILING]

Drive carefully, okay?

I'll treat it like it was my very own.

Please don't do that. I've seen your very own at the garage.

They'll never gonna get that front end straightened out.

They shouldn't put curbs so close to the street.

Will you call me about dinner?

Sometime around lunch.

Good morning, Jim.

Hi, Judy. Hi, partner, what's going on?

Judy cracked up her car. Now she's gonna take a sh*t at mine.

Hey, listen, I just talked him into taking me out to dinner tonight.

How about if you and Jean join us?

Yeah, that's fine with me, if Jean can get a sitter.

Well, you talk to her and then I'll talk to her later

and setup some nice romantic place.

See you later.

[ENGINE REVVING]

[TIRES SQUEALING]

I hope we can find a sitter.

I don't know. I see enough of you during the day.

-Will you take a look at that? -Hmm.

[BULLS MOOING]

GRANT: And where the heck is John Wayne when you need him.

I hope we don't have to sh**t any of them.

Hey, Grant, how fast were they going?

A truck turned over down by the railroad yard.

These three were about to get on the freeway.

Now, I don't know what to do with them.

Let's try to get 'em calmed down.

How about calming down that one?

REED: Come on now, take it easy. Go on.

Go on.

Get out. Go and move.

Go, get lost.

Aren't we gonna do something with them?

Why don't we call a sergeant.

One-Adam-, request any available supervisor

meet us westbound on Washington from Boyle.

We have a , livestock.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-, roger. Any available supervisor,

meet One-Adam- on Washington at Boyle. A , livestock.

They'd never believe this.

GRANT: Come on now.

[WHISTLING] Ha! Get in there, hey!

Come on!

Ha! Ha! Hey! Hey! Come on, come on now.

Hey there! Come on!

Better keep him away from those windows.

Hey! Hey, hey, hey!

Doggie, get along there. Get up there doggie.

Come on, boy.

Come on now, take it easy.

No one's gonna hurt you now. Come on.

Go on.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: One-Adam-. One-Adam-, meet X-Ray on tag .

One-Adam-, roger.

One-Adam-, to X-Ray , go.

OFFICER ON RADIO: We're two blocks north of you. Can we help out?

Yeah, how about trying to block traffic at a Boyle.

OFFICER:Roger, we'll have Adam- cover there and we'll take Boyle and rd.

Thanks.

There are a couple of fenced-in parking lots on the next block.

Maybe we can corral 'em.

GRANT: Ha! Hey! Hey!

You want to try that lot on the right?

If the cattle will cooperate.

GRANT: Hey, hey, hey, hey! Hey, hey, hey, hey!

Come on here.

Ha, get in there, hey. Come on.

Ha! Ha!

Hey, hey, come on, come on now!

Hey there, come on, doggie.

Get along now. Get up there, doggie.

-Hey, hey! -Come on.

Not bad for a lone ranger, huh?

No way you couldn't have done it yourself, big fella.

Where's the other one?

He must have found a hole in the fence.

It'd be a pretty big hole. Let's take a look.

[BULL MOOING]

Hey, Pete, look at this.

[BULL MOOING]

Go on!

-MALLOY: Get along! -Ha!

[CAR HONKING]

Hey, Malloy,

will you kindly tell me what's going on around here?

Better let Grant explain, Mac. It's his bust.

Well, it's like this.

I was cruising along Washington Boulevard,

a truck turned over down by the railroad yard

and these little lost doggies were heading up the draw.

So I did my thing.

Then Red Ryder and Little Beaver joined the roundup.

All right, all right. Check around for damages

and see if you can get this traffic moving again.

Yes, sir.

You two might as well get back to work.

And when I talk to the guy who's responsible,

I'd like to throw him under the jail.

What would you book him on? Unleashed animals?

Littering.

That's what gripes me about this job.

Every day, the same old thing.

[LAUGHS]

McNeeley's? I never heard of it.

It's a seafood place, romantic atmosphere.

Sounds good.

-She'll k*ll herself. -At least.

How fast is she going?

Over .

[HONKING]

[CONTINUES HONKING]

Hi, guys, what's happening?

Step up on the curb, please?

Can I see some identification, please?

Sure thing, love.

Driver's license do?

Yeah, that'll do fine.

Hey, how fast was I going?

We clocked you at .

Oh, wow, that's terrific!

They'll never believe it.

Are you going to put that on the ticket?

Oh, this isn't a speeding ticket.

It only applies to motor vehicles.

I'm writing you for unsafe passing on the right

and running a stop sign.

Unsafe? Where do you get unsafe?

How long have you been riding a bicycle?

Two months and pounds.

What do you think, huh?

I think it's about time you read up on bicycle safety.

What are you talking about?

Unsafe passing on the right and running a stop sign.

I'd say you've got a lot to learn. Sign here.

You're a grouch, you know that?

You're not so bad but your buddy's a drag.

REED: Hmm.

I've been meaning to talk to you about that, Jim.

You are grouchy.

[LAUGHS]

Judy sure must be having a stabilizing influence on you.

-Why? -I could remember a time

when you'd been a lot friendlier.

Oh, really? I was more interested in the bike.

I didn't know you were that into bikes.

I'm not but Judy's boy David is.

I'm thinking about getting him one.

Really?

It's a pretty expensive gift.

A good one's gonna cost you about a bucks.

Are you putting me on?

No.

I bought mine about six years ago

and it cost $ then.

Maybe I'll get him roller skates.

FEMALE DISPATCHER: All units in the vicinity and One-Adam-,

a just occurred.

, Lincoln Drive.

Suspect a male Caucasian, brown hair and brown eyes.

Six feet tall, pounds.

Wearing a western jacket and beige jeans.

Last seen eastbound on Adams on foot.

Suspect is carrying a stolen guitar.

One-Adam-, roger.

[TIRES SQUEALING]

REED: Now, hold it.

Okay, you got me. I give up, I give up.

All right, put your hands on the top of your head, left hand, come on.

Turn around now. Set the guitar down.

Other hand on top of your head.

All I wanted was a guitar.

Look, uh, I've got this important gig tomorrow.

It's only a demo but it could be top , no kidding.

Hey, uh,

what do you say we just give the guy back the guitar

and just forget about it, okay?

I can borrow a guitar from somebody else.

Sorry, pal. Let's go.

Wait a minute! Isn't there any way I can talk to you out of this?

I mean, I got to put my sister through college.

And my mother's sick, my dad's out of work.

Hey, Officer, what if I told you I was an orphan?

Just get in the car. Watch your head.

Look, I ain't really a bad guy.

It's just that...

My doc told me I've only got three months to live.

You're gonna have to come up with a better story than that.

Okay, okay, give me a minute.

[CHUCKLES]

Now if everybody'll just behave themselves,

we should get off work on time.

There's a couple of guys in there breaking up the joint.

MAN : You been askin' for this for a long time.

MAN : And I'm still waitin', punk. You ain't laid a finger on me.

All right, all right. Settle down. Fight's over.

Now, what's the problem?

Ah, it's no big deal. I just get sick and tired of my brother-in-law

needlin' me all the time.

You know it's a family thing, that's all, just horsin' around.

All right, the main event's over,

you can all go back to your beers.

-You want to make a complaint? -I don't know. Maybe.

Ah, come on. We didn't mean nothing.

-We didn't hurt nobody. -Not even each other.

Hey, officer, can I talk to you for a minute?

You stay put.

You involved in this?

The whole thing is a stall, they're a bunch of pickpockets.

The hook's over there.

Hold it right there!

Hang on to these guys!

REED: Let's see some identification.

-MALLOY: Hold it! -I'll cut him off!

MALLOY: Stay put!

Come on out.

Down on your face.

Once you got it, you never lose it. It's an instinct.

-You a cop? -Retired. Philadelphia.

You know something? It felt good.

Watch your head.

Thanks for your help.

I put in years with the department in Philly.

You're still in pretty good shape.

You never really quit being a cop.

-It's in the blood, you know? -Yeah.

Right, you two enjoy it while you can.

You're going to miss it.

[HONKING]

I'm coming.

All set.

And you complain about me being late.

[CHUCKLES]

I'd have been ready in plenty of time

if I didn't have to pick up your clothes

and make sure your socks matched.

Oh.

[ENGINE REVVING]

Except for that old blue blazer

you look gorgeous.

Thanks.

So do you. But what's wrong with the coat?

You spend half your life in blue.

What's wrong with a little color?

Tonight, I'm what's happening.

Okay, no cop talk at dinner.

I've heard that before.

MAN: Help! Police! I've been robbed!

Jim! Did you see that?

Yeah.

What are you doing? They have a g*n.

I know. I'm not going to catch 'em. I'm just trying to get the plate.

They know we're following them.

Maybe.

Thank you.

You did tell them :, didn't you?

-Yep. -I wonder what could be keeping them?

Oh, Jim's probably still in the shower.

Jim, maybe we'd better let the police handle this?

The police are handling it. Get out a pencil and paper.

At the first phone booth, I'm going to drop you off.

They may try to duck in somewhere.

Don't worry. If they rabbit, I'll let 'em go.

What about dinner?

Get this down. Armed suspects

driving a blue Mustang, California license,

Ida Ocean Sam.

Heading westbound on Santa Monica from Harrison.

Tell them they're being followed by an off-duty officer

and describe our car. Got that?

Yes, sir.

Call Communications and give them that.

-But, Jim. -If I'm not back in minutes,

take a cab to the restaurant. I'll meet you there.

No answer. They must be on their way.

-I hope nothing has happened. -What could happen?

[MALLOY SIGHS]

-Maybe we should order a salad. -Pete, it's almost an hour.

Maybe you should call the police.

-Maybe they had car trouble. -They'd have called.

Here they are.

Hi, Pete. Hi, Judy.

-Where's Jim? -He's working.

Working? He's off duty.

That's what I told him.

And when he didn't come back, I came here.

-Sounds like fun. -It was until he dropped me off.

Why is it that she has all the fun?

If you'd like to get involved in a pursuit just give me the word.

I'll settle for the bouillabaisse.

Do you think you can find out what's keeping him?

I'll call the station.

The 's in the blue Mustang, one car ahead.

[SIREN WAILING]

Well, look. See what you can find out for me and I'll call you back

in about five minutes, okay?

Thanks.

[SIGHS]

MALLOY: Hmm.

What happened to you?

I'll fill you in later. Where are the girls?

Oh, Jim, look what you've done to your coat!

It's nice to know that you're glad I'm all right.

I was a little concerned.

I'll make it up to you. But right now I've got to go back

to the station to do some paperwork.

You didn't have to chase them.

Yeah, but I did and caught 'em.

Look, why don't you just enjoy your dinner

and I'll get back as soon as I can.

For this I got a babysitter.
