-Do you ever see a big game?-No, but I'd sure like to.

You know, I arranged my trips so that weget to see most of the big ones.

In fact, one year we droveclear out to the Rose Bowl game.

What year was that, Dory? ?

Yeah I think so.

That must have been super. I'dsure like to see a Roseball game.

We'll leave the womenat home with their fur coat.

To see you as you really are.

Because it curesme of any bitterness.

And now I've got my business setup for a buying trip to New York.

Like I told you.

A good salesmancan always arrange to

have his job takenwhere he wants to go.

And of course, with all this traveling

now I had to buymyself a new bus.

Say, would you like to see it?

I sure would.

I saw you drive her up.

Will come on let's go.

Ship. [laugh]

I'll show you my philly, too. But, of course,

she isn't quite in thesame class with yours.

-You mean you got a horse?-No, it's a hot car.

[laugh]

Men are all the same, theywant a toys, any age.

They certainly are. I have somecoffee on the stove. Shall I get it?

Oh, thank you. That'dbe very nice. We can't stay

long. We've got somefriends waiting at the motel.

Oh, all right. I'll hurry, then.

[laugh]

That's what I had inmind. Well, how about it?

That is, if your motherlent you, of course.

-Let him. What?-Come back to Chicago with us.

You mean really?

Sure.

You can spend the summer there.

Then we'll take in the World Series.

You could even go toschool back there in the fall.

I'm not much onthat stuff myself, but,

well, I know you kidsgo for it. And I know how

important things like thatcan be to kids. Right, Ginger?

Yes.

And my car youdrive it all you want.

Why, I might even getyou one of your own.

It gets hot in the summer, butwe can always go to the lake.

[door closing]

Boy, isn't it a monster, though?

A beautiful big shiny monster.

Gosh, I wonder whattiny he's going to get me.

I'm going to stop this right now I'mgoing to tell him that he can't go

I'm going to stopthis right now. I'm

going to tell himthat he can't go.

Chicago.

A new car.

Gee, I can hardly believe it.

No, I can't say it yet.

Not when it's all so new.Not when he feels like this.

Scott, what are you goingto do about your paper route?

Oh, I'll give it to Don.He's been wanting one.

I won't be earningany more money for

you, mom. But youcan have whatever

I get for the Philly and gosh. Youwon't have to feed me or anything.

That's right.

Where are you going?

To bed.

Good night Scott.

Good night mom.

Gee, a new car and everything.

[music]

I am scared.

And angry.

Anger with Scotttoo, for being taken in.

But that isn't fair either.

I was taken in by Leon whenI was much older than Scott.

Taken in by promises.

The dazzled, the lavish hand.

But how can I say to Scottthat's what his father really

is? Interested and generousonly when it pleases him to be.

Scott's Lamp.

Maybe if I remind him of theChristmas he made it for me.

It was the year rightafter Aunt Marty d*ed.

Maybe then he'd understandhis father better now.

Well, we couldn't helpremembering that Christmas.

It was the worst one we ever had.

I'd been ill with the flu.

[music]

Hi, Mom.

Hi, Scott.

Did that with you?

Yeah, I was beginning to think so.

Where on earth have you been?

oh.

Gosh, guess what happened.

I got a paper route.

I got a paper route.

Scott dickerson that's wonderful.

Yep. Cleary

One of their best routes too.

But how did you get around?

What?

In all this snow?

-Are you feet wet?-Oh, they're okay.

-But that's when I'm late.-Oh.

-It was sort of far.-I'll bet

Honey, you can'tpossibly do this every night.

It's wonderful. I'mproud of you and all that.

What? Tomorrow's Christmas.

That will be all right, won't it?

- What do you mean?-What do I mean?

Oh, gosh.

It isn't very nice to't write outabout your Christmas present, is it?

Scott, come here.

You're not stillexpecting a bike, are you?

Gee wiz mom.

Sure.

-We talked about it all year.-But honey, I

thought you understoodwith why being

sick and all. It takenevery sin we had.

Honey, we scarcely have enoughto live on till I get back to work.

They gave me the rock becauseI promised I'd have a bike.

Oh, mom, I just got have that bike.

Sorry, Scott, wejust can't afford it.

[music]

Some Christmas.

[music]

I got somethingbetter than that for you.

-Oh.-Look.

There's a lamp for your tableso you can read and song.

Scott it's beautiful.

This is what you're making?Your manual training.

Oh.

I could have made a milking stool.

But I didn't think thatwould be very useful.

Oh no, this is much moreuseful. Now I won't have to

bother this one from theliving room anywhere, will I?

I'm awful sorry Icried last night, mom.

I should have realized youcouldn't go around buying bikes.

Scott. You'll never knowhow much I wanted to.

And I will just assoon as I possibly can

Sure.

I'll tell him with the paper. Andby the time we do get it, maybe my

leg muscles will be so strong I'llbe able to make the football team.

[laugh]

Maybe so, honey.

Maybe so huh?

Can you coffee.

[music]

That's when he needed you leon.

But, not now.

Not now.

[music]

[alarm ringing]

Oh, my gosh.

I sure wish I could figureout what was the matter.

You finally wake up.

Scott, why didn't you call me.

For heaven's sake? Look at thetime. Come on, you got to get ready.

I'm not going

What do you meanyou're not going?

Don't want to.

Scott last night just seem so.

Oh sure, that was last night. Iwas all steamed up. But last night

What happened?

Changed my mind.

Scott.

Are you sorry I told yourfather he could come here?

No, every fellow wants toknow what his father's like.

How he looks and everything.Well. So now I know.

He saw the way I felt last night.

I did let it show.

How bitter I was.

[music]

Scott.

Scott, I want you toknow something. You don't

have to stay herebecause of me you know.

Because I'll be happy justknowing you're in a good school

and having a real car and allthe things you've always wanted.

What are you tryingto do, get rid of me?

No, of course not.

But I won't have youstaying here because

of some silly ideaof loyalty to me.

Loyalty to you whatabout the Philly?

Scott.

If I've done anything toprejudice you, I didn't intend

it. Your father means welland I was very young you know.

Well, you haven'tprejudiced me. Gosh, I can't

remember you saying theleast little thing against him.

And what is it huh?

Well it's just that.

I got to thinking in the night and

and well, you know, he was tellingus about the time they went to

the Rolls Bowl in and shehad a new fur coat and everything.

Yeah.

Well it's just that.

that was the same Christmas eve.

You were so sick and couldn'tbuy me the bike, remember?

Yeah.

What are you goingto tell him, Scott?

I'll just tell him, thanks allthe same, but I can't do it.

You better get back.He might jerk, Virginia.

[car starting]

[music]

A reasonable amount ofunderstanding was that Matthew who
