[ Mama ]: enjoy whatever the new day brings you.

[ Papa ]: ha-ha-ha, and you'll always find something fun to do.

Ahh...i don't like autumn.

It's cold.

And wet.

And there's nothing to do outside.

Maybe so -- but a daily dose

Of fresh air and exercise

Is good for you.

[ Sighing ]

Hey...it's not cold out.

It's really kind of warm.

[ Sister ]: it feels like summer.

[ Brother ]: hey, let's play baseball.

And soccer!or...

W en was the last time we went down to

The swimming hole for a family swim?

Heh-heh, swimming? But it's the end of october, papa.

Yes, ha-ha-ha.

It's almost winter.

Not according to good, old mr. Sun,

Who has given us the gift of an unusually warm day.

Well, come on then, get your swim suits on.

We're going swimming!

Yippee!

[ Lau hing ]

[ Sister ]: hey! Ha, ha, take that.

[ Laughing ]

Oh, that's it. We give up.

No we don't...oops.

Ok, ok, we give up.

[ Sister ]: ha, ha, this is a great idea, papa.

Yes, it would have been a shame

Not to be out enjoying

All that today has to offer.

[ Sighing ]

I hope the hot weather never ends.

Ah, it really is a treat for it to be so warm this time of year.

But as far as it never ending...

Ah, ha...

Notice the leaves on this crab apple tree

Haven't turned over yet.

That can only mean one thing to an old weatherologist like me.

The weather tomorrow is going to be

Exactly the same as it is today.

Yah!

More swimming tomorrow.

Whoo-hoo!

Ha, ha, youbetcha.

Brother, brother, wake up!

Oh...i'm sleeping.

Come on, you don't want to waste time sleeping

When you could be swimming.

Swimming!

Brother,

Catch.

Don't bother getting dressed.

All you need is your bathing suit.

[ Brother ]: charge!

[ Sister ]: whoo-hoo! Swimming! Yah!

[ Laughing ]

Huh?

[ Shivering ]

Guess what?

It's cold outside.

Youbetcha.

What happened, papa?

I thought you said

The weather today was going

To be just like yesterday.

Well, heh-heh...

Even an old weatherologist

Like me isn't always right.

Oh...i wish today was sunny and hot like yesterday.

Me too.

Why did the weather have to change?

Now there's nothing to do.

Well, the one thing you don't want to do is waste today

Sitting around inside wishing that it was yesterday.

Go upstairs and get dressed so that you can go outside

And enjoy all that todayhas to offer.

All right.

Ok.

[ Shivering ]

Ok, do you think we have had

Enough fresh air and exercise, brother?

No, I think we have to stay out here a little bit longer.

But there's nothing to do.

Brr...you're right.

It' too cold to play baseball or soccer.

[ Sister ]: or go swimming, brr...

[ Grunting ]

Ha, ha, you almost got it.

I won't miss this one.

[ Grunting ]

Ah!

Got it!

Good one. Think you can do it again?

Ah!yah!

I got it!come back here!

[ Laughing ]

[ Brother ]: ok, here we co e!

Charge!

[ Laughing ]

[ Sister ]: that was the biggest pile

Of leaves we have ever had.

I jumped the highest.

And later, when the wind got really strong,

We flew our kites higher than ever.

Right o t to the end of the string.

Really?goodness.

You were right, mama.

I was?

Uh-huh, we could ha e wasted the whole day

Wishing it was warm and sunny like yesterda .

But we didn't -- instead, we went out

And enjoyed what today had to offer, just like you said.

Even though it wasn't warm like yesterday, it was fun.

You know, this fall weather is perfect for a family hayride.

How about tomorrow?

What do you think, papa?

Well...my weatherologist's eye had noticed that the sparrows

Are staying close to the trees today.

That can only mean one thing.

The weather tomorrow is going to be

Exactly the same as it is today.

Yah!

A familyhayride

Here we come!

Ha, ha, youbetcha.

Brother, brother, wake up!

We're going on

A hayride today, remember.

I know. I already got up and got dressed.

Ha, ha, good one. I wish I had thought of that.

[ Brother ]: last one in the pile of leaves is a rotten egg.

[ Sister ]: but you are already a rotten egg.

Yah!

Yippee!

[ Gasping ]

Huh?ohh...

Everything's covered in snow -- even our leaf pile.

It sure is pretty, don t you think?

Yes, mama, but what about the hayride?

Well,

It looks like it's cancelled.

[ Moaning ]

It's too bad we can't jump in the leaves.

I wanted to make an even bigger pile than yesterday.

Yes, but think of all the things we can do in the snow.

What were you saying yesterday, mama, about today and tomorrow?

Instead of wasting today wishing t at it w s yesterday,

Go out and enjoy all thattodayhas to offer.

Yah!

Last one to make a snow angel

Is a rotten egg.

But you are already a rotten egg, remem er?

[ Laughing ]

Hmm...all I can figure is that

Those sparrows must have thrown me a curve ball, heh-he ...

Oh, papa, ha, ha, ha...

Hey, good one.

So, what do you want to do next?

Hey, sister. Hey, brother.

[ Grunting ]

Isn't the snow great?

I'm making a now bear.

A snowbear -- neat!

Come on, sis.

Mama, have you seen my gloves?

I thoug t t I'd go out

And do a little shovelling.

Here they are.

I wonder how the cubs are doing.

Mama! Papa!

Ahem...

We're right here, dear.

Oh, there you are.

I need an old h t and a carrot and something for eyes.

We're making a snow bear -- the biggest ever!

Well, I guess that

A swers your question, mama.

And after we built the biggest snow bear ever,

Aiden and bonnie came over and we built a huge snow fort.

You were right again, mama.

The snow was even more fun than playing in the leaves.

We're glad we didn't waste today

Wishing that it was yesterday.

You went out nd enjoyed all that today had to offer.

Uh-huh...ye .

Speaking of which, I think tomorrow

Would be a perfect day to go cross-country skiing.

[ Mama ]: great idea -- I love it

When we all go skiing together.

And it looks like papa's going to need

To work off all thosee extra marshmallows

He's putting in his hot cocoa.

Huh?

[ Laughing ]

Ha, ha, ha...yes, well, I can tell you one thing for certain.

I noticed the snow falling straight down today.

That can only mean one thing.

Tomorrow's weather is going to be just like today's.

Then we're going cross-country skiing?

Ha, ha, ha...youbetcha.

Yeah...yah!

[ Laughing ]

I can't wait to go skiing.

I was just starting to get go d at it last year.

Uh, could I get a hand here please?

I just finished waxing our skis.

They should be nice and smooth for today's skiing.

I'm not sure there's going

To be any skiing today.

It's raining.

It started about minutes ago.

It's coming down so hard, it's melted almost all of the snow.

Are you sure, papa?

Aren't the sparrows flying close

To the unturned leaves or something?

Sorry, I'm afraid not.

I was looking forward to our ski day together.

Why couldn't the snow have stayed for one more day

Instead of all this miserable rain?

Mama, it was you who told us

Not to go wasting today

Wishing tha it was yesterday.

Yes, you said that we should go out

And enjoy all that today has to offer.

Yes, I know.

It's just that I was so looking forward

To a family day of skiing.

Now look at it out there.

It's cold, wet and miserable.

Well, then maybe what today has to offer is a chance

For us to enjoy a family day inside.

Hey, that sounds like a great idea.

So, what should we do?

I know.

We could play a game.

A d after that, we could make ginger bear cookies.

[ Brother ]: minee is a summer bear.

He's going swimming.

[ Sister ]: mine is an autumn bear.

She's going to fly a kite way up in the sky.

[ Papa ]: mine is a winter bear.

He's going skiing.

[ Mama ]: and mine is a spring bear.

She's planting flowers in the garden.

I'm glad we didn't waste today wishing that it was yesterday.

And I'm glad we enjoyed

All that today had to offer.

Hmm...watching the way those rain drops are falling,

The old weatherologist can tell you one thing for sure.

Uh-oh...oh...dear... H re we go again.

Whatever type of weather we have tomorrow,

I know we re going to enjoy it.

[ Laughing ]

Ha, ha, ha, youbetcha.

[ Sister ]: some things can't be hurried and waiting is no fun,

But when you keep busy, soon the waiting is all done.

Get ready in the outfield.

This one's oing to be a whopper.

[ Grunting ]

I got it! I got it!

Whoa! Ugh!

Ta-da!

Told you I got it.

[ Gasping ]

Sister, your fur!

What?

I didn't know it was a thistle bush.

Hey, you made the catch.

Oh, I wish there were another way

To get all these burrs out, but...

I'm never falling into thistle bush again...

Especially now that I am going to be bald.

You're going to be bald!

No, sister is not going to be bald.

That's the last of h m.

No burrs and no bald.

What about my ribbon?

You will have to wait for your fur to grow back a bit

Before we can put the ribbon back in.

But I look silly without my ribbon.

Well, I think you look pretty

As a picture -- with or without it.

[ Gasping ]

Picture? Oh, no!

It's picture day at school next week.

Will my fur grow back by then, mama.

Well, fur grows when it grows.

You can't make it grow faster.

You have to be patient.

Ok, I'll try to be atient, but it's not going to be easy.

Hats aren't allowed in class, sister.

Better take it off before

Professor actual factual sees you.

Professor act a factual?

He's our substitute tea her today.

Your fur doesn't look so bad.

You madeit sound

A lot worse on the phone.

Hey, it looks cool, sister,

Like something I saw inteen bear magazine

It's the newest style.

Well...sort of.

T anks, but I know my fur looks silly.

It's even too short for my ribbon.

I just hope it grows back before picture day.

Good morning, class.

I thought it would be fun today to learn a bit about botany --

The science of plants.

Now, everyone gets a seed pot.

But they are yogourt cups, pro e s r

recycledyogourt cups, queenie.

They can be used for all sorts

O seful things, like seed pots.

And we have all sorts of seeds here.

Any seed will do.

With lots of light for photosynthesis,

Some water and good soil,

This seed will turn into something like this.

Wow...cool!

What's'sp oto-sin-thisix?

Photosynthesis is when plants use energy from sunlight

To make the compounds they need to grow.

Are we going to grow our own plants, professor?

You bet. Help yourselves.

Look, mama,

We planted seeds in school today.

The professor says, if we give it water

And lots of light for photosynthesis,

It wi l grow into a plant.

How long do you think it will take, mama?

Well, you might have to give it a little patience, too,

Because plants take a while to grow.

[ Sighing ]

Ok, I'll try to be patient.

[ Gasping ]

[ Sighing ]

[ Gasping ]

[ Sighing ]

[ Sighing ]

[ Gasping ]

Now, dear, you know that staring at your plant

Won't make it grow any faster.

[ Sighing ]

I could use some help cutting these cookies.

Ok.

I don't understand it.

Everyone's plant has started to grow except mine.

Lizzy's even has a flower.

Perhaps your plant needs a little more time.

But I have to take it back to class on monday.

The professor's coming back to see how our plants are doing.

Everyone's going to see that mine isn'tdoinganything.

And monday is picture day too.

Lizzy has a new ribbon, so she will look extra pretty.

And I am just going to look extra silly.

I'm afraid your fur will grow when it grows,

And not a moment before.

It's the same with your plant.

All you can do is wait... And try to be patient.

But being patient is ard, mama.

I don't want to wait.

I want it to happen now.

Maybe you fishing day with gramps

Will help take your mind off it.

Ohh...i don't feel like fishing.

But gramps will arrive any minute to pick you up.

Ok, but I'm not going to let him see my silly fur.

Mm-mmm...that's good, mmm.

Nothing like your mama's cookies.

These taste so good, I bet you must have helped with them.

[ Sighing ]

You know, if there's something on your mind,

I can't think of a better place to talk about it

Than here at ou old fishing tree.

After all, it is our special place.

It's just that it's picture day at school on monday,

And I got som burrs in my fur

And mama ha to cut the out and...

Now everyone is going to have a picture

Of how silly my fur looks.

Oh, I don't know.

It looks kind of cute to me, kind of modern.

And we planted seeds for school

And, like my fur,

My plant isn't growing either.

I've been waiting for a whole week,

Gramps, a whole week.

It sure is upsetting when things don't happen

As fast as you want them to,

But still, there re some things you just can't hurry.

So you just have to be patient.

That's what mama says, but I can't help it, gramps.

I want it to happen n w.

Ha, ha, ha...i kn w exactly how you feel.

I found it really hard to wait for things when I was young too.

You did?

Yep -- way back before our fishing tree was even here.

You see, I planted it.

youplanted

The fishing tree, gramps?

But I thought it was here...forever.

[ Chuckling ]

Well, not quite forever.

Anyway, it sure taught me about b ing pat ent.

At first, I thought it was going to sprout right away...

Like something out of jack and the beanstalk.

But nothing happened.

Still, I kept coming back again and again

It felt like it was taking forever.

Finally, I found something to keep myself busy,

To take my mind off all the waiting.

Before I knew it, the time had passed

And the tree started to grow.

It grew bigge e and bigger and bigger.

And that's ho this old tree taught me about being patient.

I learned that there is no use getting all upset and frazzled

When things don't happen right away.

Because there is nothing we can do to make things happen faster.

All w can do is wait and be patient.

That's right.

Waiting is really hard,

But if you find something to do while you're waiting

It makes the time pass faster.

L ke fishing.

So, instead of waiting, let's do some fishing, gramps.

[ Mama ]: you don't want to forget these, sister.

I'm sure it will sprout soon.

It just needs more time.

I know. It will grow when it grows.

And nothing will make it grow ny faster.

I can be patient.

I d n't need that t day, mama. Thanks.

Hmm, I'm not sure why your plant didn't sprout yet, sister

Did you w ter it and put it in the sunlight?

Yes, professor.

Hmm, exactly what kind of seed did you plant?

One that I brought in, or--

A seed from the apple I had

For lunch on the day you came in.

[ Chuckling ]

Why, sister, no won er it hasn't sprouted yet.

You are growing an appletree.

Trees take much longer

To grow than the ordinary flowers

The rest of the class planted.

You mean, it's going to be a tree,

Just like gramps' fishing tree?

Hmm...well, I can't say

I have ever heard of a fishing tree b fore.

[ Laughin

Would you like to try a flower seed?

I promise you it will grow in no ime.

No thank you, professor.

I'll just wai for my apple tree.

It might take a long, long time to grow,

But s me things, you just can't hurry.

You just have to wait.

I know how to be patient.

[ P.a. ]: Teacher jane's class,

Please come to the gym for your class picture.

Aren't you coming, sister?

Oh...i forgot that it was picture day.

[ Sighing ]

Oh, well, here goes.

Yes sirree, cute as a button.

A button with funny fur.

But now, it's all grown back.

And that's not the only thing that's grown, gramps.

Ta-da!

Look at my apple tree.

So, when anyone comes here, they will have the fishing tree

To rest on and give them shade

andthey will have an apple tree

To give them a nice juicy snack.

It will be a while before that happens.

But one thing's for sure.

Your grandchildren will come here some day

To enjoy our tree and its apples.

ourtrees, gramps.

But until then, while we're waiting...

I could 't think of a better way to pass the time.
