the lowdown about green buildings.

So what's bad about this house?

BEEZER: It's got an asphalt roof,

which is dark, and therefore absorbs energy.

TALIA: Is that bad?

Makes the house very hot, in the summer especially.Oh, right, right, right.

RUFF: So that dark green roof absorbs a lot of light energy

from the sun and makes it hot inside.

That is not good.

This wood looks like it's California redwood.

And we're here in South Carolina,

which means this was probably shipped across the country,

burning up fossil fuels.

Oh. It does not have any renewable energy source

that I can see.

And it doesn't give back to the environment in any way.

Uh-oh, Ruüf was right.

This house isn't very green at all.

So your challenge today is to build Ruüf

a green doghouse.

One that stays cool in summertime,

uses renewable energy

and to somehow give back to the environment.

Give back to the environment, huh?

So if you take something from the environment

to use in the house, then you must also return something?

I wonder how we can do that.

This particular building, Half Moon Outfitters,

is a very greenly constructed building.

And we try to look at every aspect of the building

so that it would stay cool in the summertime,

warm in the winter, and use the least amount of energy possible.

Do you guys see anything in this room

that strikes you as green construction?

First off, the windows.Yeah, there are a lot of windows,

so you don't need to use as many lights.

Yes. We're trying to let as much sunlight into this room

as possible, so we don't need electricity to power lights.

Or heat.

Exactly. And in the wintertime,

the sun passes low in the southern sky

and comes straight through these windows

and heats the building.

Clever. The sun's lower in the sky during the winter,

so it shines straight through all those windows

and heats the room up.

Okay, what do you guys think about the wood

that you see in here?

Is it from South Carolina?

Yes. This is South Carolina harvested pine.

then it's local and doesn't use a lot of energy

The boat. Oh, yeah, it's a rowboat.

So it doesn't need a motor.

No motor. Good. There's not a lot of trash.

Not a lot of trash. It's catching rainwater.

All the water's going into there,

so it's like, collecting the water.

Oh, look, the recycling.

Oh, there's one of those special energy conserving bulbs.

I think those are solar panels on top of that. Really?

Wow. Beezer sure thought of everything.

I need to hire him to make Studio G green.

No, no, no, Chet. Not the color green.

Not the color green.

Okay, we got solar panels.

There was the water that you caught from the rainwater.Awesome.

And it went into these big, like, tubs.

Yeah, those rainwater barrels are enough

to irrigate these plants and flush our toilets.

Did you hear that?

Collecting rain to water the plants and flush the toilets

means they use less water from the faucet.

I guess that's how they give back to the environment.

Do you guys know how solar panels work?

Something with electrons.That's exactly right.

So, light energy in the form of sunlight

hits the panels,

knocks loose electrons from the the PV material,

the photovoltaic material

and creates electricity, which is then

put right into our electrical system,

offsetting the power we need from our local utility.

So, it converts sun energy to whatever other energy we need.

Exactly.That's right, Blossom.

Solar energy is renewable because it doesn't get used up,

so maybe they can use one on Ruüf's doghouse.

Now it's time for them to get to work building.
