[light whimsical music]

- Hmph!

[heavy dramatic sigh]

Hmm!

- Is there something you
want to get off your chest,

then, Sean?

- I hate doing jigsaw
puzzles with Mom, Grandpa.

She always finishes the
clouds really super fast.

- Is that right?

- Yeah.

And that's like my most
favorite part to do!

So from now on, Mom can just
do the puzzle all by herself.

I'm retired!

- I don't blame you, Sean.

It's a terrible thing
that she's doing,

when she knows it's
your most favorite part.

She does know that it's
your most favorite part,

now, doesn't she?

- Well, not exactly.

- I see.

So you've never told her, then.

- No, but--

- You know, Seanny,

this reminds me of a
time me good friend Ferny

faced a similar situation.

It all started on a
typical day at school.

We were listening very
closely as Mr. Hornsby

filled our eager minds
with important information.

- Now, class, I realize
that it's late in the day.

- Ferny!

[stifled laughter]

- [Mr. Hornsby] And, it is
difficult for some of you

to concentrate when the school
day is almost at an end.

[students laughing]

But in keeping with our
studies of man and the sea,

I am giving you all a monster
of a homework assignment.

[students sighing
disappointedly]

This is an important project.

And it will take an
entire week to complete.

[students groaning miserably]

You and your parents
will work together

to build model boats for the
annual Raloo Stream Boat Race!

[students cheering excitedly]

- Oh, Janey Mack, I love
the Raloo Stream Boat Race!

- Your artistic talent
should come in handy

on this, then, Ferny.

- [chuckling] Thank you,
Mr. Hornsby. [chuckling]

- Class dismissed!

[students cheering]

- Me dad and I won the
ribbon for Best Design

at the Boat Race last year.

- Grandma and I
won Most Authentic.

Mr. Hornsby said our boat looked
just like a real schooner!

- Papa and I didn't
win anything last year.

But we will this year!

- Sure don't be
counting on winning

the Grand Prize Trophy, Ferny.

That'll be going
to me and me dad.

- What what what?

Not if grandma and I have
anything to say about it!

We are going to build
the fastest boat

on the Raloo Stream,

just like the one Brendan
the Navigator captained

on his voyage of discovery!

- [Piggley] What kind of
boat was that, Dannan?

- [Dannan] I'm not sure.

But I'm planning to find out!

- Look!

This is the boat that me Papa
and I are going to build!

It's a Spanish Galleon!

I'm part Spanish,
you know. [giggling]

- You did a drawing
already, did'ja!?

- Oh yea, I did it
while we were walking!

I can't wait for
me Papa to see it

so we can start building it!

- What what what?

- [gasping] Oh!

A Viking longboat!!!

THAT'S what I'll build!

The fastest, most
fearsome boat on the sea!

- That's great, Piggley--

- Behold, the ruthless Viking!

- Which do you think is faster,
Ferny, a Viking longboat,

or the vessel of
Brendan the Navigator!

- Well, uh, I, I don't know.

- I am Olaf the a*-Bearer!

[w*r cry]

- Oh, gracious!

Spare us, Olaf!

- Only if you tremble at
the sight of me mighty a*!

Arr!

- [Dannan] Oh, I'm shakin'
in me boots so I am!

[giggling]

Hey, hey, hey, wait
now, where did Ferny go?

- Oh no!

He's gone inside to get
a headstart on his boat!

We're losin' the
race already, Dannan!

- Come on, Piggley!

We've got some
catchin' up to do!

- See, papa, mira!

It's a Spanish galleon.

All those sails will make
it faster than a rocket!

- Ah, galleon.

Ah, si!

This is a wonderful design

you have created, Fernando.

- Papa, do you think we can
build it so it's fast enough

to win the Grand Prize Trophy?

- I think we can do whatever
we set our minds to.

[giggling excitedly]

First we need to make a pattern.

- Right!

I'll get some paper!

- [Grandpa Piggley] All over
town folks were knuckling down

to create the kind of
boat that could win

the Raloo Stream Boat Race.

Dannan and her grandma
engaged in a massive hunt,

searching every
book they could find

for a bit of inspiration.

- Did you find it, Grandma?

Did you find a picture
of Brendan's boat?!

Woohoo!

There it is!

- Made of an oak frame with
leather stretched over it,

the curragh was
smeared with animal fat

to keep the water out.

- It's called a
curragh, Grandma!

Let's start building
it right now!

Uh, right after I clean
up these books, that is!

[laughs happily]

- [Piggley] I myself had
some fairly mighty plans

for building a boat with my dad.

- I was thinking we could
put shields down the side

of it, dad, from the
dragon's-head bow

all the way back to the stern!

And a few flaming catapults

could go right in
the middle of it!

- Oh, I love flaming catapults!

- [Dad] You've got some
grand ideas there, son.

And a Viking longboat
is a wise choice.

They were built to sail up
shallow rivers, you know.

- I know!

So that should help
us in the race,

since the Raloo Stream is
so shallow and all that.

- That's good thinking
there, Piggley!

- Of course we'll have
to build a mighty fierce

dragon's-head bow to
terrify our opponents!

[a fierce Viking cry]

[chuckling]

[echoing Viking cry]

Oy, did you hear that, Wiley?

Did you hear that?!

- Yes, I--

- [Shirley] Folks round
here are always yelling

and screaming and talking
and yes, interrupting--

- Yes, I--

- Interrupting, but,
[chuckling] not me.

Not Shirley.

Mm mm mm.

And you know why?

Because I, I am poised.

Am I not relaxed?

The world is my day spa.

Nothing bothers me.

[bird wings flapping]

Ah!

Get it off!! Get it
off!! Get it off!!!!

- Oh!

- Goodness sakes, I
just had my wool done!

Oh, just get, Wiley, get it!

Hit it!

Smack it!

Wiley, do something!

[Irish folk music]

[smacking]

[chuckling sheepishly]

- There.

I finished the pattern.

How does it look, Papa?

- Fantastico!

It looks fantastic!

But you might want to
make some of these lines

a bit more graceful.

- Oh, OK.

Uh...

Uh...

What do you mean,
"graceful", Papa?

- Well, uh...

Here, lemme show you.

- [gasping] Oh, that
looks much better, Papa!

Presioso!

- With this design, we really
could win something this year!

- Oh, that'd be brilliant!

And now I see what
you mean about

making the lines more graceful.

Could I try it, Papa?

- Of course.

In a minute.

I just want to get
this part right.

- Are you ready, Ferny?

- Ready!

[stick splashing]

- Do you see it yet?

- No, no.

YES!

There it is!

- Here it comes, Piggley!

- Jakers!

It's really moving, lads!

We're going to have a strong
current for the race this year!

- Hee hee!

I can't wait to get me hands
on the Grand Prize Trophy!

- [laughing] Don't get
your hopes up, Dannan.

I'm afraid you're
just going to have

to settle for second place.

[water splashing]

[laughing]

It can't be helped!

Just wait till you
see the magnificent

dragon's head at the
bow of our longboat!

- Well, I suppose I'll just
have to imagine it, Piggley,

since you'll be behind
our curragh

and we'll be mighty hard
to catch I'll tell ya!

- So what are we up against with

your Spanish
galleon then, Ferny?

- Is it going to be
big and powerful?

- Or will it be small and quick?

- Does it have sails?

- Or paddles?

- Uh, well, I'm
not exactly sure.

Me dad has kind of
changed it a bit.

He's making it much better!

Er, come on, let's go
check the current again.

- Right!

- Okay!

- [Grandpa Piggley] Now
we didn't think much

about Ferny's
answer at the time.

After all, our
parents were SUPPOSED

to be helping us with our boats.

Me own dad helped me
to collect supplies

and gave me good advice.

Along with plenty of support.

[limb cracking]

- Huh?

Oh!

[grunting]

[laughing]

- Oh, Piggley!

- [Grandpa Piggley] Dannan's
Grandma not only helped Dannan

build her boat; she also
helped her rub it down with

plenty of slippery oil so it
would glide through the water.

[laughing]

But it was beginning to be
clear to Ferny that his dad

was helping him a lot more
than the other parents.

In fact, Don Toro was
hardly helping at all;

it was more like he was building

the entire boat all by himself!

- Papa, is this the pattern
for our Spanish Galleon?

It looks... different.

- Si, Fernando.

I worked on it today while
you were with your friends.

- Oh.

Well, uh, could I do
the gluing there, Papa?

- Of course, mijo.

I think you need more
glue right over here...

[bird squawking]

- Ok buster, you asked for it.

Not exactly a nice plunge.

[inhaling deeply]

[water splashing]

Ha!

Ha!

It worked!

Go ahead and gloat.

I'll lose this bird like
you're losing your hair.

- Keep looking lads,

there's treasure
here for the taking!

- Woo-hoo-hoo-hooooo!

Feast your eyes on this, boys!

- It's a fishing hook.

- To you, maybe,

but to me it will soon
become the perfect anchor!

- I'm hoping to find something

to make supplies for
me Viking warriors!

- And what are you hunting
for Ferny?

- Well, uh, we don't
really need anything else

for our Spanish galleon.

It's almost finished now!

- Jakers, Ferny, you can always
find something new to add.

- Do you really
think so, Piggley?

- Of course!

I plan to turn these
washers into Viking shields

to hang on the side
of me longboat!

[crate lid creaking]

[straw rustling]

Oh, I think I found something!

- What is it?

- It's a nail, Ferny!

Pull it out!

[boards creaking]

[gasping in awe]

[exclaiming delightedly]

- Ooo, that's quite a treasure!

- What are you
going to use it for?

- Uh...

A flagpole!

To hold the Spanish flag!

- That's an excellent
idea, Ferny.

No galleon is
complete without one!

[giggles happily]

- I'm going to go and
show it to Papa right now!

- Don't forget we're
having a practice race

at the stream tomorrow, Ferny!

- Don't worry lads!

I'll be there at
the cr*ck of dawn!

Papa!

Papa, I've got
the greatest idea!

We should have a
flagpole to hold

a Spanish flag on our galeon!

- [chuckling] Great minds
think alike, Fernando!

I was just working on one,

with a flag that you
can raise and lower.

[flagpole squeaking]

- Oh.

That's a great idea, Papa.

[nail chinking]

- Muchas gracias, mijo.

Now, let's get this
boat painted, shall we?

- Oh si, Papa!

We can paint it together!

- Hold the can
right there, mijo,

and we'll have it finished
in no time at all!

- So where's Ferny?

We can't do a practice race
with only two boats you know!

- I know!

Besides, I want to
give you both a chance

to get used to the idea
of losing to me longboat.

- Well now, we'll
just see who has to do

the getting used to round here.

- [Ferny] Hello!

- [Don] Hola!

- Would you look at that now!

Don Toro's come
along to help Ferny!

You're here!

- Let's get started!

Well, there she is.

The mightiest vessel
on the Seven Seas!

- Oh, Janey Mack!

It looks just like a
real Viking longboat!

- It is an excellent
design, Piggley.

But.. are those cookies?!

- Yes!

Me mom baked 'em to serve
as me fearsome crew!

- Eh, this one has
a bite out of him.

- Eh, that's Cletus.

He lost his arm in a battle with

the queen of the Visigoths,
whose name is Molly.

[giggles and laughter]

- And now I would
like to present

the curragh of
Brendan the Navigator!

- Ah, Dannan!

Maravilloso!

- Well made, Dannan.

Ah!

Careful!

- I've got it!

Hoo hoo hoo!

I told you our boat would
be hard to catch, Piggley!

[chuckling]

- Do you think either
one of your boats

will be able to catch
this little beauty?

[impressed gasps]

- Jakers, Ferny!

It's brilliant!

You designed it?

- Si!

He did!

- Well... I sort of designed it.

- Do you see how the
flagpole goes up and down?

- That's even better
than the old nail

that Ferny found in the shed!

- It sure is!

And look at the way
the sails are rigged!

- The rigging is
a bit complicated.

But let me show
you how it works...

- [Grandpa Piggley]
Don Toro was as excited

as a sheep in a clover field!

He went on and on,
explaining in detail

how he had crafted
the magnificent boat.

We were all so enthralled with
how gorgeous the boat looked

that not one of us noticed
how unhappy poor Ferny was.

- Did you see their faces?

Piggley and Dannan were very
impressed with our boat.

- Si papa, they were.

- Our galleon is sure
to win the Boat Race!

- Maybe.

- We can be very proud
of the work we have done

on our boat, Fernandito.

- Why do you keep calling
it OUR galleon and OUR boat?

It's not OUR boat!

It's YOUR boat!

YOU made it!

YOU'RE the one who
should be proud!

- Fernando, I...

[crying intensely]

[door creaking]

Fernando?

May I talk to you?

- Ohh... I'm sorry, Papa.

It's just that this was
supposed to be MY project

with you helping me.

Not the other way around.

- I am the one who should
be apologizing, Fernando.

It is your project.

And I was wrong to take it
away from you the way I did.

I'm sorry.

- Really?

- Fathers make mistakes
sometimes too, son.

I hope the next time you
feel I have made a mistake,

you will come and
talk to me about it

before you get so angry.

- Oh, I will, I promise, Papa.

Terro prometto.

[giggling]

- Muy bien, Mijo.

Now, what do you say
we start over and build

the boat you wanted to
build in the first place?

- [Grandpa Piggley] Using
Ferny's original drawing,

they worked long into the
night on the new boat.

[items clattering]

[wood scraping]

[tool clacking]

[hammer clanking]

[wood cracking]

[bottle tinking]

[wood crashing]

[glue bottle uncapping]

- [Grandpa Piggley]
True to his word,

Don Toro resisted the
temptation to take over.

And together, the two of them
created their own masterpiece.

- I've decided to keep him.

He's like a hood ornament for
the sheep who has everything.

I say this of course
with all modesty.

I started a trend.

[crowd chattering]

- I can't believe Ferny is late.

Today of all days!

Doesn't he know he's going to
win the Grand Prize Trophy?

- Here he comes!

- What is that thing
he's carrying?!

- Piggley!

Dannan!

Look at me new Spanish galleon!

Me dad and I made it TOGETHER!

- Fernando put on the
sails this morning,

just before we got here.

- We couldn't find
any good material,

so I used a pair of me
old socks. [chuckling]

- Wooo!!!!

- [Grandpa Piggsely] As we
hurried off to join the others

at the stream, Ferny
explained to us

all that happened
the night before.

And when the Raloo Stream
Boat Race finally began...

we watched proudly as our
boats caught the current,

and raced off towards
the finish line!

[children giggling excitedly]

All of the boats except
for Ferny's, that is...

[water splashing]

But Ferny didn't mind one bit.

His boat was easily fished
out, and it even won a prize.

- The ribbon for "Best Use of
Socks" goes to Fernando Toro.

[happy laughs]

[laughs]

- Ferny used socks as sails!

That's pretty funny!

- [chuckling] Yes, yes, it was.

- Maybe that's
why his boat sank.

They were so smelly they
knocked out the crew!

- You know, I never
thought of that!

- Oh, there you are, Sean!

Aren't you gonna come and help
me finish the jigsaw puzzle?

- Um, mom?

Did you know my
most favorite part

of a puzzle is
making the clouds?

- Why no, I didn't know that.

But thank you for telling me.

Next time we do a puzzle,

I'll save all the cloud
pieces just for you!

- You will?

- Absolutely!

Right now though, I need someone

to finish up the
grass on the puzzle.

- The grass is my SECOND
most favorite part to do!

Oh, thanks for the
story, Grandpa.

But you didn't say who won the
Grand Prize Trophy that day.

Was it you?

Or Dannan?

- You know, I can't remember.

I guess it wasn't that
important who won or lost.

The important thing was
that Ferny's smelly socks

got a good washing
in that old stream!

[laughing]
