Hello, folks. It's me the conductor. Today, the family

Will travel under the sea to meet pilosaurus, the t. Rex of

The ocean, so come on along with me on the dinosaur train.

Her name was mrs. Pteranodon sitting on her nest

She heard a scratching and said... ♪

Oh, boy! My eggs are hatching!

♪ One by one her kids popped free

Baby pteranodons , , ♪

I'll name you tiny, shiny, and don.

♪ But tiny said... ♪ Wait! There's one more, mom!

♪ Last little baby was a different size

With teeth and a tail and big green eyes

He didn't look anything like the rest ♪

What am I doing in a pteranodon nest?

♪ But dear, old mrs. Pteranodon said... ♪

Oh, this is your family, and I'm your mom. You may be

Different, but we're all creatures. All dinosaurs have

Different features. Come on, buddy. We'll take a vacation.

I'll get us a ticket at pteranodon station. We'll

Travel the world in sunshine and rain and meet all the

Hey, shiny. I was just thinking. Wouldn't it be so

Amazing to live underwater?

Yeah. What kind of underwater creature would you

Be?

Hmm. I think I'd be a diving creature so I could dive faster

And further than anyone.

But what about your wings?

I'd use them as flippers. Ha ha ha!

I think I'd live on the ocean floor so I could find

Shiny rocks and minerals.

If I lived underwater, I'd be the fastest creature ever,

So I could win all the swimming races! What kind of underwater

Creature are you, buddy?

I'm a great big fish with lots of teeth, and I eat a lot!

That sounds like what you are now, buddy, except for the

News. There is a large marine reptile whose nickname is the

T. Rex of the ocean.

Oh! Really?

But the creature's officially called a pliosaurus.

Whoa!

But why is a pliosaurus called the t. Rex of the ocean?

Does it look like buddy?

Let's take a look, shall we?

Hmm. It has flippers.

And a short neck but a long head.

And big jaws. Rawwr!

But it doesn't look that much like buddy.

Only buddy looks like buddy.

Mr. Conductor, is the pliosaurus a dinosaur?

Ah. Excellent question, my good fellow. Ooh! And you'll

Tunnel approaching, and this one will take us under the sea!

I am! I'm paulie!

Paulie the pliosaurus! Hi.

I'm tiny the pteranodon. This is buddy, shiny, and don and my

Welcome to the jurassic ocean. Let me guess--you all

Live on land.

Yep. We live at pteranodon terrace on the western interior

Sea.

I've heard of that sea. Is it nice?

Well, it's big and blue, a lot like this one.

Oh. All oceans are really different from each other,

Buddy. Well, at least to a sea creature like me.

Hey, paulie did you know that pliosaurus are sometimes

Called the t. Rex of the ocean?

What exactly is a t. Rex?

A tyrannosaurus rex. That's a kind of dinosaur. I'm a t.

Rex.

Cool name! So what do t. Rex do?

Well, for starters, we look for food a lot. I'm a

Carnivore. That means I eat meat and lots of it.

Well, pliosaurus eat a lot, too. I'm almost always hungry.

Hey! Let's compare features.

Paulie, can we see your teeth?

Sure! Ahh!

Ahh!

Ok. You both have lots of teeth.

You both have short necks.

And big heads.

Really big. Rawwr! When I grow up, I'll be one of the

Biggest dinosaurs on land.

Someday, buddy's gonna be our big brother.

Yeah, our really big brother.

Pliosaurus grow up to be really big, too.

Been out of the ocean.

Well, even if we live in different places, we both do a

Nope. A pliosaurus is a marine reptile. Marine means I

Well, whatever we are, pterosaurs, marine reptiles,

Dinosaurs, we all like playing games, right?

Right. So let's play a game.

Ok. I can teach you my favorite game. It's called pilo

Saurus.

Plio saurus?

It's easy. One of us is it and closes their eyes. They

Yell, "plio!" And the other kids move around and call back,

"Saurus!" The kid who's it tries to find all the other

Kids by following the sound of their voices.

So it yells, "plio!" And the other kids yell, "saurus."

Let's play. I'll be it. Ready?

[Giggling] [tap tap]

Found you two! Plio!

Found you, tiny! Now where's shiny?

[Train whistle blows] there's the whistle, kids.

Time for us to head home. Nice to have met you, paulie.

Yeah. You could ride in the aqua car.

It's fine with me, paulie, if mrs. Pteranodon says it's ok

And will keep an eye on you.

[Squawk] we'd love to have paulie travel

With us.

Ahem. I'll look after him, mrs. Pilosaurus, and, paulie,

Pretty cool, huh, paulie?

Oh, my gosh! I can't get over it! What are all those

Ha ha ha!

Wow! Look at all these dinosaurs! Some are small, some

Are huge. There are so many species, and then there's the

Mountains and plants and birds and trees!

Yep. This is our home, pteranodon terrace.

So, paulie, are you going home now?

Nope. I think I'll ride the train to the end of the line

Before I head back to the ocean.

I'll make sure paulie gets home safe. All aboard!

Hi, there. I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist, and this is

Pliosaurus.

Pliosaurus.

Pliosaurus.

Pilosaurus.

Pliosaurus was a giant reptile up to feet long,

Which made it one of the biggest and most feared ocean

Predators during the jurassic time period. It hunted all

Kinds of animals, even other predators like sharks and

Plesiosaurs. That's why some people call pliosaurus the t.

Rex of the ocean. Pliosaurus had a long, low head with

Powerful jaws full of sharp teeth. It also had a short neck

And a long, thin body that helped it swim really fast.

Paleontologists don't know for sure, but pliosaurus may have

Swum like modern sea lions, using their large flippers to

Paddle through the water. No matter how they moved around,

Pliosaurus could probably swim fast enough to chase down their

Prey. Can you think of other modern-day predators that can

Swim fast enough to catch their prey underwater?

Sharks!

Seals!

Those are great examples.

Sharks and seals both swim fast enough to catch their prey

Underwater. Ok. Keep watching for more dinosaur discoveries.

Dinosaurs were fast!

Elasmosaurus to visit a desert, so come on along with me on the

Dinosaur train. All aboard!

Hello, pteranodon family.

Hello, mr. Conductor!

Well, reel me in and weigh me. You're going under the sea?

Yeah!

We have a play date with elmer elasmosaurus.

We're taking him for a ride on the train.

Ah, yes, in our aqua car.

And where are you gonna take him?

Where are we taking elmer?

Hmm. It should be someplace really different from his ocean.

Really different from the ocean, eh?

Well, you're smart kids.

You'll think of something.

Oceans are full of fish.

And shiny shells.

And lots and lots of water.

I got it! We could take elmer where there's hardly any water

At all, a desert!

Ooh! A desert!

[Squawk] great idea, buddy.

You know, oceans and deserts may have more in common than

You think. See, at different times in the earth's history,

Oceans covered more of the earth's surface.

Whoa!

And sometimes, the ocean goes down, and what used to be

An ocean becomes land or even a desert.

Really?

Well, we think so. It's our hypothesis.

Ooh! An idea we can test!

Either way, today, you could take elmer to visit a desert

That used to be covered in ocean.

Yay!

Whoo-hoo!

Speaking of which, we're heading out to sea!

Ooh! Here comes the tunnel, mr. Conductor.

I believe that's my line, shiny. Ahem. Ahem. Time tunnel!

Time tunnel approaching!

Whoa!

Wow!

Next stop, elasmosaurus ocean station under the

Cretaceous western interior sea.

[Cheering] let's find elmer!

Whoo-hoo!

Do you see him yet?

No, but I think I just saw a shell fly by.

A shell?

Hi, elmer!

Hi, buddy, tiny, and shiny, and hi, mrs. Pteranodon.

Were you playing some kind of game?

Yeah. That's waterball, just about my favorite underwater

Game of all time. See, we use our flippers to hit a shell

Back and forth to each other.

My dad and I were just practicing.

[Tapping on window] hi!

Well, elmer, ready to board the aqua car for today's

Adventure?

Yeah!

Whee! This is so fun!

How's the water temperature, elmer?

Just right, thanks.

Water temperature, check.

Do you have enough room in there?

Sure. Plenty of room. Thanks.

Heh heh! I'm fine, guys! I'm just happy to be riding the

We're taking on water and supplies, folks. Plenty of time

To stretch your legs and tails.

Ok, elmer. We're here. You can open your eyes now.

Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and elasmosaurs, I present to you

The desert!

Whoa! A desert, but wait.

You said this was once an ocean.

Well, it's a hypothesis. The conductor says that a long,

Long time ago this place may have been covered in water.

Well, I guess I can picture it. Those rocks over there kind

Of look like the reef rocks where I live.

And there's lots of sand on the ocean floor and lots of

Sand here.

[Squawk] I've never seen so much sand in

My life.

Someone say sand? Yep.

There's lots of sand round here. Uh, down here, folks.

Name's percy, percy paramacellodus. Eh, but you can

Just call me, percy.

Hi, percy. I'm tiny pteranodon, and this is buddy,

Shiny, and elmer and my mom--mom.

Hi, percy!

What brings y'all to these sandy parts?

Our friend elmer is an elasmosaurus. He's never been

To the desert before, so we brought him on the dinosaur

Train.

Hmm. Elasmosaurus. Well, I never. Unusual feller, heck of

A neck. Where you from?

I live in the ocean.

Never been to the ocean myself. Not much of a traveler.

Got everything I need right here in the desert--food, sun,

Shade. That's about it.

So you like living in the desert?

Yep, I do. We don't get a lot of visitors. I think it's

On account of the weather. Gets mighty hot in these parts.

So how do you stay cool?

Well, after my morning walk, I head back to my burrow to get

Out of the sun. Most of us take to the shade when it gets too

Hot.

Wow! It never gets hot where I live, but here, you have to

Find shade to cool off. This desert sure has changed from

When it was an ocean.

Yeah! Did you know that maybe this desert used to be an

Ocean, percy?

Why, sure. It's common knowledge to us desert folk. We

May not have seen an ocean, but we know all about them.

Really?

You see, when I was just a little lizard, my ma and pa

Told me, just as their ma and pa told them and so on and so

Forth, that a long time a go this desert was covered in

Water, but over a very long time, the ocean dried up, and,

Well, now it's a desert, and that's the story.

Wow! So every mom and dad lizard tells their kids the

Story of how this ocean turned into a desert?

Yes, siree, buddy, they do.

Hmm. Maybe moms and dads could sing the story to their

Kids.

♪ There once was an ocean so grand

It filled up this dry desert land

But a long time went by and the ocean went dry

And now there is nothing but sand ♪

Yay! That was great, tiny.

Heh heh. Nice, little ditty, tiny. I reckon I will sing it

To my kids next time I see them.

So, percy, what games to you play here in the desert?

Games? Not much. How about you?

In the ocean, we play waterball.

Waterball?

We knock shells around, but it's underwater, so I guess we

Can't play it here.

Maybe we could play dinoball.

Did someone say dinoball?

Thanks, mr. Conductor.

Hmm. I'd play, buddy, but I have to stay in the aqua car.

Hmm. Ok. We'll make up a dinoball game where you can

Play from the aqua car.

I know! We toss the ball around in a circle. The first

One to let the ball roll to a stop is out. Elmer can use his

Flippers. We can call it desertball.

I'll just watch you kids play, if you don't mind.

[Squawk] come watch with us over here,

Here it comes, tiny.

Ok, elmer. Back to you.

[Cheering] ha ha! That's some mighty

Fine desertball playing, elmer.

[Squawk] hey. What's this?

[Squawk] shiny, look! I think it's a

Seashell.

Hmm. It doesn't look like any of the shells in my

Collection.

That's because this shell is a fossil.

A fossil?

Yep. Over time, the seashell turned into rock and became a

Fossil.

Maybe the shell is evidence that this desert was covered in

Ocean a long time ago.

An excellent hypothesis, buddy.

Yep, buddy. That is some mighty smart desert

Hypothesizing.

[Squawk] who wants some lunch?

We do!

Mom, can percy eat lunch with us?

Sure, tiny. We can always have one more join us for lunch.

Why, thank you, ma'am.

We're having fish!

I love fish!

Hmm. Well, I don't eat fish, shiny.

Then you could have a leafwich or a leaf loaf.

Well, you see, I don't eat them neither.

You don't eat fish, and you don't eat plants. What do you

Eat?

Insects. Bugs are my thing.

A lot of us desert folks eat them. I guess the little

Fellers are an acquired taste.

Personally, I can't imagine snacking on anything else.

Yeah. I can't imagine eating anything else but fish.

Did someone say fish? Voila!

Here's your fish, tiny, mrs.

Pteranodon, elmer, and shiny.

Some carrion for you, buddy, and, percy, insects on a stick.

On a stick! Well, I'm much obliged, mr. Conductor.

[Whistle blows] ahem. Well, adventurers,

It's time the train headed back to the ocean.

Aw!

Mr. Conductor, this was the best trip on the dinosaur train

I've ever taken. I can't wait to tell my family.

Glad you enjoyed it, elmer.

I had a sneaking suspicion that you'd find a special connection

To this desert.

And I met a new lizard friend--percy.

[Sniffles] right back at you, partner.

I'll have to ride the train and visit you in your ocean

Hi, there. I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist, and this is an

Ocean. You may not know that at different times in the history

Of the earth the oceans have risen and fallen. Sometimes,

Huge areas of land are flooded by sea water and turned into

Shallow seas. At other times when the sea level goes down,

The dry land returns. We know that the middle part of north

America was underwater because paleontologists digging in

Places like kansas have discovered fossils of sharks

Like cretoxyrhina.

Cretoxyrhina.

Cretoxyrhina--that's right.

And also they found marine reptiles like...

Elasmosaurus.

Yep, elasmosaurus. Both were predators that lived and swam

In the seas during the cretaceous. So the next time

You're near a desert, just think. A long time ago, it may

Have been an ocean. Ok. Keep watching for more dinosaur

Discoveries.

Did you know that the dinosaur train travels

Everywhere in the mesozoic era?

Let's look at the map. There was the triassic, jurassic, and

Cretaceous time periods. Let's visit the jurassic. Many

Species of large marine reptiles lived during this time

Period, but one of the biggest was pliosaurus, a large-headed

Predator that was about the size of a school bus, and

That's just one of the stops on the dinosaur train!
