Hello, folks. It's me, the conductor.

Today we're going to visit the stegosaurus and find out about

The plates on his back. So come on along with me on the

Dinosaur train!

There was a mom her name was mrs. Pteranodon

Sitting on her nest she heard a scratching

And said... ♪ Oh, boy! My eggs are

Hatching!

♪ One by one her kids popped free

Baby pteranodons , , ♪

I'll name you tiny, shiny, and don.

♪ But tiny said... ♪ Wait! There's one more, mom!

♪ Last little baby was a different size

With teeth and a tail and big green eyes

He didn't look anything like the rest ♪

What am I doing in a pteranodon nest?

♪ But dear, old mrs. Pteranodon said... ♪

Oh, this is your family, and I'm your mom. You may be

Different, but we're all creatures. All dinosaurs have

Different features. Come on, buddy. We'll take a vacation.

I'll get us a ticket at pteranodon station. We'll

Travel the world in sunshine and rain and meet all the

Species on the...

Dad says to tell you that he and shiny and don flew over to

Hey, buddy! Did you think of a way to cool down yet?

Fanning seems to help, but I have to stay in the shade.

Well, I'll stay here and keep you company then. Want to

[Sighs] it's too hot to play.

Come on. Let's think of something.

It's too hot to think.

Uhh!

Oh, ok. Hey, mom, are there any dinosaurs who know how to

Cool off when it's hot besides flying?

Hmm. You know, different species of dinosaurs have

Different ways of cooling off when it's hot.

Like right now, we're sitting in the shade.

But I know a species called stegosaurus that has a great way

To cool off. It uses the plates on its back.

Plates?

Cool!

And they live in the jurassic period, where it's even hotter.

Could we go and visit them?

Sure! We could take the dinosaur train and visit them.

You could ask them how they manage to keep their cool when

It's hot.

Oh, boy! We get to ride the dinosaur train.

[Squawks] yeah!

[Whistle blows] oh, feel that breeze.

I know. It's cooler already.

Well, mrs. Pteranodon and tiny and buddy. Hello.

Hello, mr. Conductor.

Ah, I see you're traveling way back to the jurassic period

Today.

Yeah. We're going to visit the stegosaurus and see how

They b*at the heat.

With their plates.

That's right, tiny.

Stegosaurus have plates on their backs.

Are stegosaurus plates like the plates in the dining car?

You mean these? Well, even though stegosaurus plates and

Our dining car plates are the same word, it means something

Different. Stegosaurus plates have that name because they're

Flat like a plate.

Wow. You know a lot of stuff.

Well, troodons are the smartest dinosaurs.

I can't wait to see the stegosaurus plates.

Yep. You'll see for yourselves when you get to the

Jurassic period. Oh, speaking of which, time tunnel, folks!

Time tunnel approaching!

[Bell ringing] time tunnel!

Entering the jurassic period.

Next stop, stegosaurus forest.

It's even hotter here in the jurassic than it was back home

In the cretaceous.

Yup. Come on! Let's go find some stegosaurus and a little

Shade.

[Sighs] see, kids? In the jurassic

Period, there's no grass or flowers.

No flowers? Why?

Oh, I don't know why, tiny.

Here in the jurassic period, the earth is different. No flowers,

Lots of low-lying herbs and ferns, and that's what

Stegosaurus like to eat, so we should find some around here.

There they are, I think.

Oh! Boy, your eyes are sharp, buddy! It's a herd of

Stegosaurus.

Can you see their plates?

Yeah. I got to find out how they use them to b*at the heat.

Let's go talk to them.

[Squawks] look, kids. Did you notice

How the stegosaurus are all standing facing one way?

Hmm. Is that how they're b*ating the heat? I wonder.

Let's ask them if they're doing that to cool off. Come

On, buddy.

Um...you go ask. I'll wait here. They're really big up

Ha ha! Come on.

[Grunting] oh, hey, man. How ya doin'?

Um...fine.

Hi! I'm tiny pteranodon, and this is my brother buddy.

Hi. Hi.

Well, hi, buddy and tiny.

I'm morris. Morris stegosaurus.

It's awesome to meet you.

I really like your plates.

Yeah, they're beautiful.

Oh. My plates? Heh! Thanks.

Yeah, I dig 'em.

Plates.

Very good, small guy. I do have plates back there.

[Squawks] that was fun.

I'm always forgetting I have that tail swinging around

Behind me. Whoops. Sorry. There goes my tail.

[Wind whooshing] tiny, I have a hypothesis.

You mean an idea you can test?

Yep. My hypothesis is, maybe the wind blows through their

Plates, and that's what cools them down.

Sorry. I forgot. What were you saying about my plates?

Well, we were wondering, do you stand with your plates

Facing the wind to help you cool off?

Well, sure, dude. Doesn't everybody? What are the other

Stegosaurus doing?

[Squawks] oops. My crazy tail again.

Sorry.

[All laughing] yeah, see, all the stegosaurus

Are kind of lined up, so the wind can blow down right through

Our plates, which are, you know, connected to us, so it helps

Cool us off. You get it?

Maybe we could try it.

We need plates, though.

Well, that's cool with me.

Go for it. I'll be right here, doin' my thing--eatin' ferns.

[Giggles] how does that feel?

Any cooler?

No. I actually feel a little hotter. I don't think our

Plates work like theirs, buddy.

No. They're aren't connected to us like morris' plates are

Connected to him.

Yeah. For our species, standing in the shade works

Better, and maybe these would make good fans. Ha ha! Morris?

Are your plates also like armor, to protect you from big

Meat eaters?

Tail! Incoming!

Oh, sorry. Well, the plates do make us look bigger, and that

Helps scare off the meat eaters...sometimes.

But, you know, the main thing I like about our plates is, like

You said, tiny, they're beautiful, man.

Yeah.

They are.

And when I look around, even from a long way off, I can

Recognize my friends, the other stegosaurus. Right, dudes?

Right.

Oops! There go my friends.

We just kind of browse along the forest floor, looking for tasty

Ferns. I better catch up.

[Dinosaurs roaring] look, mom. Now the wind is

Hello, buddy and tiny. Well, did you find out about stegosaurus

Plates?

Yeah. We think they're for a lot of things. They help keep

Stegosaurus cool, they make them look bigger to scare away

The meat eaters.

And maybe they even help the stegosaurus tell who else is

Stegosaurus, and they're really beautiful.

I'm glad to be going back to the cretaceous, though.

Yeah! We have flowers!

And don't forget--fish for dinner!

Hooray! My favorite!

♪ If I could wish for just one dish

My greatest wish would be more... ♪

Let me guess. Fish?

Yeah! Fish! Ha ha ha!

Oops. Ha ha! Better get back to work. Time tunnel! Time

[Whistle blows] [pteranodon squawking]

And then buddy came up with a great hypothesis. Tell them,

Buddy.

[Gulps] the stegosaurus stood with their

Plates facing the wind, so it can cool them down. That's how

I think stegosaurus use their plates to b*at the heat.

Oh, you tell them, buddy.

[Squawks] hey.

[Wind whooshing] I feel a breeze. It's finally

Cool!

[All clamoring] and tomorrow, if it's hot

Again, I have a new hypothesis to test out. I bet we can all

Get cooler by jumping in the big pond.

Yeah! Big pond!

Woo hoo!

Awesome!

Hi. I'm dr. Scott, the paleontologist, and this is a

Stegosaurus.

Stegosaurus.

Stegosaurus.

Stegosaurus.

Stegosaurus like morris had plates on their back, but we

Don't know exactly what they used them for. One idea, or

Hypothesis, is that stegosaurus used their plates to make

Themselves look even bigger, maybe to scare away meat eaters

Or to show off to other dinosaurs.

Another hypothesis is that they used their plates to cool

Themselves off. Since we can't watch stegosaurus in action,

Paleontologists like to look at animals today to see what we can

Learn for them. And there is one animal we all know that is a big

Plant eater with a long trunk and big ears that it uses for

Cooling off and showing off.

Elephant.

Big elephants use their ears to make themselves look bigger

So they can scare off other elephants or even meat eaters

Like lions. And elephants also use their ears to cool

Themselves off. They push warm blood from inside their bodies

Out into their ears and then flap their ears back and forth

Like huge fans. This cools the blood, which then goes back into

The body, keeping the whole animal cooler. Let's hear it for

The stegosaurus.

Yay, stegosaurus!

You can test.

Just give me some of them durn fern fritters

When you're a hungry herbivore the world is full of food

I always follow this simple rule if it's green, it's good

Why do we love to chew?

Different flowers that grow in the cretaceous time period.

So, come on along with me on the dinosaur train.

[Humming] I don't really wanna follow

Shiny.

I want to be the leader.

Hey, this is fun!

I love hopping.

Don, we're done hopping.

We're twirling now.

[Laughter] hey, watch out.

Mom's flowers.

Whoa.

Hey, that reminds me.

You wanted to look for flowers for mom today, right, tiny?

Right, because today is mom's special day.

We're giving mom the day off.

I thought we could call it mother's day.

Ooh, mother's day.

I like that name.

Yup. It's a day just for mom.

She doesn't have to do anything at all.

She can relax.

I know--let's get mom a special present.

Ho, a special present for mom?

Good idea, team.

What kind of present?

You know, mom told me that she likes big, red flowers.

Hey, then let's find mom some big, red flowers for her

Present.

I'm gonna find shiny shells and make her a crown, and one

For me.

You know what I'm gonna give her?

A great, big fish.

Hey, I know a place that has flowers and shiny shells and

Fish.

The big pond.

All of us could go there and find her a present.

[Squawk] you're right, buddy.

There's lots of flowers at the big pond.

The thing about flowers and me is they always...

[Sniffs] uh, make me...

Ah-ah-ah-choo!

Sneeze.

I'm not sure why.

[Laughs] those are great ideas, kids.

All right, then, team pteranodon.

Let's take the dinosaur train to the big pond.

Ready to go?

[Cheering] go?

Where are you going?

[Gasp] we're going on an adventure.

Yeah, with dad.

And you get the day off, mom.

It's mother's day.

[Squawk] mother's day?

Yeah.

You stay home and relax.

Oh, stay home and relax?

That sounds lovely.

Ok.

I'm going to take a long bath in the sea, lie on the warm rocks,

And maybe take a nap.

Ok, have fun, kids.

Ah-ah-choo!

[Laughter] what?

[Train's whistle blows] tickets.

Tickets, please.

Ah, going to the big pond, I see.

Yeah!

I'm gonna find a huge fish.

I'm gonna find shiny shells.

I'm gonna find flowers.

And I'm gonna help you find them, tiny.

We'll do it together, as a team.

High !

Yeah!

Well, you're in luck.

There are fish and shells at the pond, and yes, flowers, too.

I hope there are red flowers.

Oh, you bet there are red flowers.

But you know what?

There weren't always flowers everywhere.

Here's what it looked like in the triassic time period.

No flowers.

[Gasp] no flowers?

But then, during the jurassic period, more plants and little

Flowers appeared.

I see some little flowers!

Hooray!

And now we're in the cretaceous time period, and

Look!

All kinds of big, fantastic flowers are growing.

I can't wait!

Bring on the flowers.

And remember, when you find those flowers, you'll also see

Bees buzzing around them, too.

So, "bee" on the lookout for bees!

[Train's whistle blows] next stop--big pond.

[Brakes screech] [laughter]

Well, kids, happy fishing, shell collecting, and flower

Finding!

[Cheering] red flowers, red flowers, red

Flowers.

Hey, look, buddy.

Teeny yellow flowers, like mom has at home.

[Sniffs] yup, and they smell like mom's,

Too.

[Sniffs] ah-ah-choo!

Those flowers are making me ah-ah-choo.

What can I do?

I know--fish for fishy fishies.

♪ La-la-loo ♪ ha ha.

I'll help you, don.

I can be your spotter.

But first, team pteranodon, I want each of you to go to where

You'll be looking for mom's present and give me a shout, ok?

I want to be able to hear you.

[Laughter] ♪ I'm here ♪

[Squawk] I'm here.

[Squawk] we're here.

[Rawr] [squawk]

Good, and I'm here.

[Squawk] [humming]

[Sniffs] tiny, look. It's a bee.

Remember what the conductor said?

If there are bees, there must be flowers.

Good.

Then follow me, and the bee.

Ok.

One pile for shiny shells, one pile for shinier shells, and one

For super shiny shells.

Ooh, you are a super, super shiny shell.

Mm, yeah, I need to start a new pile.

Hmm.

These flowers are different than the others we've seen.

These have a long stem and a smaller blossom.

I see our bee likes them.

Yeah.

Looks like he's smelling it.

Now he's flying away.

Let's go!

These flowers are completely different, too.

But still no big, red ones.

Look, tiny--these have , , , , , petals

In a circle.

And little, pink lines in the middle.

Our bee is smelling these, too.

What's that stuff in the middle of the flower?

It's kinda powdery.

I'm not sure, but it looks like the bee is taking it from

The flower.

Maybe it's the part he likes best.

Yeah. May"bee."

[Laughter] hey, it's flying again.

Come on, bee.

Help us find some big, red flowers.

Ha ha.

[Splash] dad, look--a

Big splash.

[Squawk] that means a big fish!

Let's both dive for it.

Geronimo!

Ok.

That was a big splash for a very small fish.

Guess we have to keep fishing, but you know what I

Love?

Fishing!

[Laughter] nice, but could be shinier.

Too small.

Too big.

Hmm.

Is this even a shell?

Aah!

It has legs!

I have a hypothesis about our bee.

It likes to go to every kind of flower it can find.

It's easy to test.

Look.

Yup, now it's visiting all these yellow flowers.

Red ones, bee.

Find us some big, red ones.

[Bee buzzing] yeah!

Huh.

Not exactly big enough for a special mother's day present.

[Squawk] [gasp]

Great horny toads!

What a fish!

[Chomp] yay!

Go team pteranodon!

Woo-hoo-hoo!

Shiny.

Not very shiny.

Small.

Medium.

Icky.

Ooh, very shiny.

Uhh.

I wonder if I have enough.

[Squawking] ok, team. Gather 'round.

Let's huddle by the puddle.

What? Already?

[Squawk] that's dad.

We better head back.

Oh, it's time to go.

We looked and looked and we saw yellow, pink, and white flowers

But no big, red ones.

[Bee buzzing] whoa.

Where is the bee going?

Buddy, look what our bee found.

Big, red flowers.

Yay!

Awesome!

Sweet!

[Bee buzzing] wow.

They're so perfect for mom.

She'll love them.

Let's pick some and bring them home.

Wait!

Don't pick them.

Mom said that all flowers are alive and should be left alone

To just look at and smell.

Tiny, what if we take this whole log back to mom?

[Gasp] buddy, that's a great idea.

Come on, let's go.

Well, I'll be.

You kids found your big, red flowers.

Yup.

A bee took us right to them.

Well, after first visiting every flower in the big pond.

Yeah.

He seems to like all different colored flowers.

Right, tiny.

Bees seem to like brightly colored flowers the best.

It looks like the bee is drinking something from the

Flower.

Yup.

The bee takes a drink from every flower.

It's something called nectar.

And while he's getting nectar, something else sticks to his

Legs.

It's called pollen, and the bee spreads it from flower to

Flower.

Does the pollen help make more flowers?

Exactly.

Way to use the old dino brain, buddy.

Ha ha.

Come on, hon.

Almost there.

[Squawk] oh, my goodness.

Presents?

A crown of the shiniest shells.

A giant fish for my mom.

Big, red flowers for your garden!

Oh, growing out of their own log.

They're beautiful.

All these presents are just wonderful, kids.

Happy mother's day!

Oh, I must be the luckiest pteranodon in the mesozoic era.

[Sniffs] [sniffs]

Whoops. I forgot again.

Ah-choo!

[Laughter] what?

[Buzzing] hi. I'm dr. Scott, the

Paleontologist.

What's that buzzing sound?

[Buzzing] did you know that bees have

Been around since the mesozoic era when dinosaurs lived, and

They've always done the same things--they've

Buzzed and they helped plants make more plants.

When bees land on flowers looking for sweet-tasting

Nectar, something called pollen inside the flower gets trapped

On their legs.

The bees carry this pollen to other flowers, which helps the

Plants make more plants.

So flowers help bees and bees help flowers.

The first bees and flowers lived with dinosaurs, and we're sure

Glad that bees are still around today doing their job helping

Plants.

[Buzzing] so, remember, get outside,

Make your own discoveries, and "bee" a backyard scientist.

Did you know that the dinosaur train travels

Everywhere in the mesozoic era?

Let's look at the map.

There was the triassic, jurassic, and cretaceous time

Periods.

Let's visit the jurassic.

It was a warm, damp climate, full of both jungles and

Forests.

The first known birds and many of the biggest dinosaurs, like

Stegosaurus, lived in the jurassic.

And that's just one of the stops on the dinosaur train.

And that means fish.
