Big dinosaur week continues as the pteranodons meet another

Giant sauropod, diplodocus.

Oh, this is your family, and I'm your mom. You may be

Big dinosaur week, huh?

Have I ever heard of that?

Well, let me think.

Mr. Conductor, you've been taking us to see some of your

Favorite biggest dinosaurs ever!

Oh, I was only kidding, shiny. Ha ha! I love big

Dinosaur week. In fact we're on our way to diplodocus dell.

Diplodocus is a huge long-necked kind of dinosaur we call

A sauropod.

It doesn't really look that big.

Here it is next to a pteranodon.

Ok. He's big.

Buddy, when you grow up, you'll be really big, too.

Ha ha! But not that big.

And buddy won't ever have a long neck that stretches up to

The sky.

I bet that's the best thing about being a sauropod. They

Don't even have to move. And that neck lets them see way

Far away.

I bet there's a lot more leaves up there, too, since

Smaller plant-eaters can't reach that high.

Those are all smart hypotheses. You'll have to ask

A diplodocus to find out.

[Chimes ring] oh, speaking of which,

Time tunnel. Time tunnel approaching.

[Bell clangs] [train whistle blows]

Can we go look for a diplodocus?

We promise we'll stay within awk-ing distance.

You know, "finding diplodocus" sounds like

The nature trackers!

Trackers?

Yes! Let's split up and look for diplodocus.

But wait. Us nature trackers usually stick together.

But if we split up, we can cover more ground. And then if

One of us finds a diplodocus, we'll call out the secret signal

To the others.

What's the signal?

She can't tell you.

We could just shout "diplodocus."

Hmm, that might be hard to remember, but ok.

So it's settled. If we see diplodocus, we shout...

A big hill. Maybe I'll see a diplodocus from here.

Footprint? Too small to be a diplodocus footprint.

I found something big, too-- a huge hill. I could see

Everything from the top of it.

I found a giant log bridge and walked over a creek on it.

I found a huge tree trunk.

I think I fell asleep resting against it.

That's funny. We all found great, big things, but none of

Us found a diplodocus.

Buddy, are you thinking what I'm thinking?

I think I'm thinking what you're thinking. What are you

Thinking?

I think we should go to the top of don's hill.

Don, lead the way.

Okey-dokey.

This hill goes way down to my bridge.

And it goes down to where shiny was, too. Hey, look

Straight down.

[Gasps] I think the snake, hill,

Bridge, and tree trunk are all attached.

Yeah! They're all parts of a giant sauropod.

A diplodocus!

Did someone say "diplodocus"?

[Gasp] hey, you're my snake.

Sort of. We did meet earlier, but my name is denise

Diplodocus. I tried to tell you, but you were so excited. And

Then you flew off. And then I saw the most delicious leaves.

I'm sorry I confused you.

It's ok.

So the snake was your head and neck. And we're standing on

The hill--your back.

And my bridge was your tail.

And I wasn't resting against a tree trunk. It was one of

Her legs.

You're all right.

But why was your head so low to the ground?

Isn't the best part of being a diplodocus stretching your

Neck high up in the sky?

All the way to the tippy tops of trees, where there's more

Leaves?

Ha ha. Tippy tops of trees?

No, no, no, no. No, thank you.

We diplodocus like to keep our necks low.

But you have such a long neck. As a nature tracker, I've

Learned that there's a reason creatures have the features they

Have. I mean, look at buddy.

Hi.

Buddy's a t. Rex. And he uses his features--his great

Eyesight and strong sense of smell--to find food.

So it figures that sauropods use their feature--their long

Necks--to reach high in the sky.

Right! Denise, have you ever tried putting your head up

In a treetop?

Well, shiny, I have stretched my neck up fairly high from

Time to time. Maybe not all the way up.

Maybe you could try to stretch it all the way up.

We'll help you. I think you'll love it.

So you do eat leaves, like we thought, but just leaves that

Right, buddy. It takes a lot of energy to move a body as big

As mine around. With my neck, I can stand in one spot and still

Graze all over, like this.

I let other sauropods like brachiosaurus eat from the

Tippy top of trees. Their necks go straight up. Mine doesn't.

Your long neck is perfect for you, denise, just not the way

I thought it was.

Exactly. But it's always good to try new things. That's why

I'm so glad I met you kids.

There's all kinds of ways to use what we have. My wings may be

For flying, but they also make a cool breeze.

Ho ho! And my toe claws are for catching food, but I also

Use them for punching tickets and for tap-dancing.

And my beak is for catching fish, but it can also tap

Out a b*at.

[Tap tap tap] mom, that's not--

It might not be what her beak is for, shiny, but it's good to

Try new things. Isn't that what your friend denise said?

Hi there. I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist. These giant

Bones once belonged to a long-necked sauropod dinosaur

Named camarasaurus. Camarasaurus was found right here in utah

Along with many other huge sauropods like brachiosaurus,

Apatosaurus, and diplodocus. All sauropods were herbivores,

Or plant-eaters, and they all had long necks and tails. In

Fact, paleontologists think that apatosaurus and diplodocus had

About bones in their tails, like this! We think that adults

Might have grown as long as feet and weighed tons.

That's about the same as

Elephants. Sauropod dinosaurs were the biggest

Animals ever to walk on land. But even giants like this had to

Worry about being hunted by carnivores, especially when they

Were growing up. Some paleontologists think that

Apatosaurus, diplodocus, and their close relatives used their

Long tails like a whip to make loud cracking sounds. Others

Think they reared way up on their back legs to scare off

Predators. And then there are paleontologists like me

Who think that diplodocus and apatosaurus

May have used their long necks to fight with other sauropods.

We see this kind of neck fighting today between giraffes.

Museum of natural history in washington, d.c. It has more

Than million specimens of plants, animals, rocks, and

Fossils. Can you name any dinosaurs on exhibit there?

Stegosaurus.

Triceratops.

Right. But a huge museum like this has so many dinosaur bones

That most of its collection has to be stored in giant rooms.

Paleontologists like me go to visit these rooms to study

Fossils and make discoveries. So museums are important not just

For the cool exhibits but also for their collections. Start
