Hi there. I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist. There were many

Dome-headed dinosaurs. They probably used their thick domes

To try to show that they were the strongest. The largest of

The dome heads was a plant eating dinosaur called

Pachycephalosaurus, a name that

Means "thick headed lizard." Pachycephalosaurus live

Alongside t. Rex, but the bony dome of this plant eater

Probably wasn't used to fight off the giant meat eater.

Instead, many paleontologists think that pachycephalosaurus

Used its thick dome to butt the sides of other

Pachycephalosaurus. Other dinosaurs, such as einiosaurus,

Probably used their head gear to

Fight with each other, too. Today animals have lots of

Different ways to figure out who's the biggest and strongest.

Many species use horns to fight each other. Check out these

African antelopes. The male antelopes lock horns together

And have pushing and shoving contests. And how about these

Mountain goats? The males use their sharp, pointed horns to

Hit the sides of other mountain goats. Because so many kinds of

Animals today use their head gear mostly to fight with others

Of the same kind, paleontologists think that a lot

Of dinosaurs, like pachycephalosaurus, did the very

Same thing. Ok. Keep watching for more dinosaur discoveries.

Hello, folks. It's me--the conductor. Today the kids

Discover amber, an amazing substance that can preserve bugs

And leaves for millions of years. So come on along with me

On the dinosaur train.

All aboard!

Hi, don. Checking out you collection?

Mm-hmm.

Rawk! You have so much stuff.

I see teeth, feathers...

Shiny gems...

Claws, fossils...

Shiny shells...

Dried leaves, flowers, bugs...

Shiny rocks...

I bet you have everything that anyone would ever want to

Collect.

Not everything. There's still some cretaceous bugs I want to

Find, and my collection is missing a really cool thing

Called amber.

What's amber?

Well, it starts in a tree and comes out as a sticky liquid.

After a long time, it becomes something hard called amber.

Ooh, is it shiny?

Not when you first find it, but sometimes you can see

Through it.

See through it? Whoa.

How did you learn so much about amber, don?

Someone told me all about it, someone who rides a train and

Yells, "all aboard!"

The conductor!

Yeah. He kind of knows about everything.

I bet he'd know where to find everything, too.

You're right. Maybe mr. The conductor could help me find

Amber.

Rawk! This sounds like the perfect adventure for...

The nature trackers!

It'll be a nature trackers treasure hunt.

Rawk! A nature trackers treasure hunt? That sounds

Exciting. What do you say, team?

To the dinosaur train!

Yeah! Whoo hoo!

Tickets. Tickets, please.

Where to today, pteranodon clan?

We're on a nature trackers treasure hunt to find some

Amber.

Ah, amber, eh? Observe.

The liquid dripping out of that tree is call resin, a

Substance that, over years and years, will harden and become

Solid.

And that's amber?

Correct, but what's really amazing is that sometimes before

The liquid turns to amber, it flows over something, like a bug

Or a leaf, and traps it inside.

Then long after the liquid hardens into amber, it's clean

Enough to see through so you can look at the thing that's trapped

Inside. And that is amber.

Did somebody say amber?

Gilbert?

Gilbert!

Hi, everyone. I thought I heard about guys talking about

My favorite substance in the world.

You like amber, too?

Are you kidding? I love it.

It's the only thing missing from my collection.

You have a collection, too?

Not to brag, but I may just have the biggest nature

Collection in the entire mesozoic era.

Well, I have a collection, and it's pretty big, too.

You don't say. Do you have archaeopteryx feathers?

Yep. T. Rex teeth?

Got them. Emeralds?

Yes, and other gems.

Different colored seashells?

Yes. Oddly shaped rocks?

Yep.

Bits and pieces of freshly hatched oviraptor eggs?

Several.

I see. The collecting skill runs strong in you, but I am

Missing one thing that could make my collection the greatest

Ever--a piece of amber with a cretaceous leaf in it.

Really? I want to find amber with a cretaceous bug in it.

Hmm, maybe the nature trackers can help both of you

With your collections.

Yeah. Mr. Conductor, is there a place we can go to find amber?

Well, amber is extremely rare and hard to find, but there is a

Very special place called amberollo. It's said that the

Caves there have amber inside them.

Did you say caves?

Caves and amber?

La la loo!

Wow. This sounds like the best nature treasure hunt ever.

Yes, indeedy doo, nature trackers. Next stop--amberollo

Station.

Yay! Whoo hoo!

Hooray.

[Brakes screech] good luck with your treasure

Hunt, kids. Hope you find some amber.

Thanks. Bye.

I think the best way to find things for a collection is to be

Logical and find clues and keep an eye on your surroundings.

But I find my best things when I kind of stumble into

Them. Whoa! Whoops. I stumbled.

Hey, look. A hole.

It's not a hole, don. Look.

It's the entrance to a cave.

Which is a sideway hole.

Wow, great discovery, don.

It's a fine discovery, but I don't think we'll find amber

That way. You have to be more logical. Let's see. Which cave

Should we choose?

I like this one. Come on.

No. That one is better. See?

There are more trees around it, and amber comes from trees.

Yeah, but I still like this one.

Well, we could split up and explore both caves. Can we, mom?

All right, but you know the rules.

Stay within rawking distance.

That's rawk-- I mean, that's right.

And the best collector will emerge with the perfect prize to

Complete his collection.

Yes. I will.

Or we could all realize that the fun is in the search, no

Matter who finds what, right?

[Sighs] ok. Rawking distance.

I'll be here.

Come on.

Let's go.

Um, gilbert, caves don't make you nervous, do they?

Nervous? Nah. There's nothing in caves to be nervous about.

[Creak] what's that?

It's just the wind rubbing a branch against the cave opening.

Oh. Sorry. I guess I'm not much help.

Sure, you are. You're shiny.

You like shiny things. Maybe you'll see some amber shining

Among the rocks.

You know what? You're right.

I'll look for something shiny.

Is this amber?

Nope. Rock.

Is this amber?

Nope. Dinosaur tooth.

I've got it.

Nope. Bug. Bug?

Yeah. It's not a bug in amber, but at least it's a bug,

Right?

[Gulp] mm. Good. Thanks, buddy.

Ooh, gilbert, look.

Is it amber?

No. It's a piece of wood, but look. It's kind of shaped like a

Sauropod.

Heh. You're right, shiny.

It is.

"Hi. I'm a brachiosaurus.

I have a really long neck, and I want to join shiny's

Collection."

Rawk! I think I'm really getting the hang of this collecting

Thing. Come on.

Uh-oh. It's a dead end.

Mm-hmm. I guess we won't find your amber in here, don.

But I have to. I have to at least find something. Maybe I

Can find a new hole.

A new hole? Where?

Right here.

Waah! Whoa! Ooh!

Don! Don! Are you ok?

Rawk! Where's don? What's wrong? Don?

I'm fine, mom. Everything is great. I found amber, lots of

Amber.

You did?

Well, where's all the amber?

I just see a bunch of yellowish rocks.

And that's amber, tiny.

But I thought the conductor said we could see things through

The amber. I don't see anything through this.

That's because it's raw amber.

So we have to cook it?

No, no. We have to polish it.

Then we can see what's inside.

Polish it? Hey, look. I see a little bit of a leaf. I have a

Hypothesis. If this amber was polished, we'd see the whole

Leaf inside.

Ooh, then it would look perfect in my collection, oh,

Except amber with a leaf in it is exactly what gilbert wants
