He's the shiny one.

Those ones over there

Are kylie and cole and reese!

- [Sighs] oh, don.

- Hi there.

I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist.

Check out this amazing tree.

Trees are nice to look at,

And they also help the environment

By making the oxygen we breathe

And by providing homes

To all kinds of animals,

Like birds, squirrels,

Monkeys, and raccoons.

But did you know

That trees continue to help the environment

Even after they've d*ed?

Take a look

At this rotting, old, fallen tree.

It's going through something called decomposition.

That means the tree is slowly breaking apart

As it's eaten by animals like termites and worms.

Smaller trees might take just a few years to decompose,

But a large tree can take hundreds of years to decompose.

And in the meantime,

A decomposing tree makes a great home

And food source

For lots of different creatures,

Like beetles, ants, wasps, and spiders.

Along with other really small animals,

Like millipedes and wood lice,

They make sure that no part of an old tree

Goes to waste.

In a way, these animals are actually recycling

The decomposing tree.

So trees play a very important role in the forest

When they're alive and healthy

And even after they've stopped living.

Okay, remember, get outside,

Get into nature,

And make your own discoveries.

- Hello, folks.

Was when it was this high.

- [Laughs] wow!

That's so tiny! And I know tiny.

- Trees are never that small. Are they?

- All sycamore trees start off that small as babies.

- Wait, this is a sycamore tree too?

- Dad told us that a lot of the trees around here

Are sycamores.

- Well, your dad's right.

Want to know a little more about sycamores?

- Yeah, 'cause we're the...

Kids: nature trackers!

- Yeah! - Whoo-hoo!

- Yeah! - All right!

- Ah, the sycamore tree.

This tree has an interesting life cycle.

It grows from seed balls

That fall to the ground.

As they fall,

Little hairs on the seeds

Act like parachutes,

Helping to spread them over a wide area.

Then the seeds get covered with soil,

Watered by rain,

Warmed by sunshine,

And they grow and grow!

After years, a baby tree

Becomes large, strong, and leafy,

And even grows flowers.

- [Squawks] really?

- Yes, really.

Sycamore trees belong to the group

Called flowering plants.

- And look how tall they can grow!

- Oh, sycamores can grow

Up to feet tall!

That's taller than ned brachiosaurus' neck

Stretched all the way up!

Kids: wow!

- Plus, they're all covered with leaves!

- Mm-hmm.

Sycamores make the perfect shade tree.

- No wonder dad likes them so much.

- Once a year,

The green leaves turn gold,

And they all fall off.

The word for trees that drop their leaves

Is "deciduous."

- Wow, grandma and grandpa,

You both know so much about sycamore trees.

- Yeah! You're so smart!

- Well, we've been around for a long time.

- [Laughs] yeah, but not as long as sycamore trees.

They can live over years.

- Years?

That's almost years older than me!

- Hey, here's dad's favorite tree.

- Dad's is a sycamore, too, grandma and grandpa.

- [Squawks] that's right, buddy.

- You know, some young kids

Planted both these trees a long time ago.

- Those kids were just about your age.

- What?

Kids can't plant trees.

- [Chuckles] why, they sure can, shiny.

A kid planted this one,

And that kid was me.

I was this little when I planted this

With my mom and dad.

Both: really, grandpa?

- Can any of you guess who the kid was

That planted this tree?

That kid visited it many times

To see if it grew.

- Did you plant it, grandma?

- Or mr. The conductor?

Both: your dad planted it!

- [Gasps] [together] dad?

- The one we know?

- But where did he get a tree to plant?

- Well, we gave it to him.

He dug the hole,

And he put the little sycamore sapling in it.

- And then packed soil all around it.

- Wow, dad's so lucky to have his own tree.

- Would you like your own tree, don?

- Oh, yes!

But that wouldn't happen

Till I'm much bigger and older.

- [Chuckles] or...now.

[Wheels squeaking]

If you don't mind, grandma pteranodon.

- So are you ready

Kids: yes!

We planted our trees!

- Yay! - Whoo-hoo!

- Hi, tree.

I'm gonna call you leafy.

We're gonna have fun

Growing bigger and taller together.

I just know it.

- I know my tree will grow

Just like dad's.

- [Squawks]

Did someone mention dad?

- Dad!

Do you remember planting your tree?

- Did you plant it with grandma and grandpa?

- Did you know how tall it would grow?

- [Chuckles]

I do remember planting this tree

Like it was yesterday.

Oh, I was so excited.

Your grandma and grandpa helped me plant it,

And I came to visit it a lot.

Mine's named leafy.

- Oh, that's great! - Oh, look at that!

- Oh, I can't believe

How tall your little tree has grown, son.

You were so excited that day

When we planted it.

- Now as you kids grow,

Your trees'll grow too.

Oh, they'll be here for a long, long time,

Maybe years!

- Yeah, that's even older than me!

- And hopefully, someday your grandkids

Will come here with you to look at your tree.

- [Creaky voice] grandkiddies, this is my tree

I planted way back when I was a little kid.

It was a baby tree then,

And look at it now.

La-la-ooh!

[Laughter]

- So, dad, do you remember our race to the top game?

- [Laughs] of course I do!

And no, I'm not too old to race to the top

Of your tree, son.

[Both squawk]

Both: can we race too?

- [Laughs] sure.

Both: the more, the merrier.

- On your marks.

Get set.

Go!

I say...

It's a tie!

- I love your tree, dad.

I want to come here all the time.

- And I'll have lots of fish-wiches

And a special collection section

And it'll be so great!

- Hi there.

I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist.

Have you ever helped to plant a garden?

It's a great way to learn about nature

And a lot of fun.

There's lots of different kinds of gardens:

Flower gardens, rock gardens,

And my personal favorite, vegetable gardens.

To grow a garden of vegetables,

You need to plant seeds,

Water them,

And let the sun

Give the plants energy to grow.

Even if you live in a big city,

You can plant a community garden,

Where everyone pitches in.

You can help plant, water, and pick what you grow.

Eventually, you get to enjoy

The best part of growing vegetables:

Eating them!

Wow! Carrots!

Strawberries!

Peas!

What a great garden.

- Point of fact:

Dinosaurs did not grow gardens.

Thank you.

- That's true,

But you kids can grow your own gardens.

Okay, remember, get outside,

And make your own discoveries.
