[All cheering]

Oh, I just love a good sports competition.

And the classic in the jurassic

Is the greatest of them all!

- Well, a little friendly competition is wonderful,

But, really, it's all about having a good time.

But still...

Go, team cretaceous!

[Laughter]

And don't forget, kids--

We're not just watching.

Today we get to be part of the action.

- Right!

You'll all help out

During the flying air obstacle race!

Tiny, you're a referee today.

- Wait. What's a referee?

- During a contest, a referee makes sure

That the rules are being followed.

Mom and I are the in-air referees.

Dad and shiny will be at the start and finish line.

- And don and I get to announce the action

To the fans on the ground.

- Yes, sirree, buddy.

I'm very excited to be going to the classic today.

- Very well done, mr. The don!

This will be a great time for all!

[Watch chiming]

And speaking of time...

Time tunnel!

Time tunnel approaching!

Next stop, classic in the jurassic

Sports station

In the jurassic time period!

[Bell dinging, whistle blaring]

- Ladies and gentlemen,

Boys and girls,

Herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores...

- Ooh! That's mayor kosmoceratops.

The race is about to start.

- Today's classic in the jurassic challenge

Is an air obstacle race,

Featuring pterosaurs

From each of our three time periods.

For team triassic,

Proving great competitors come in small packages...

Peggy peteinosaurus!

[Cheers and applause]

From the jurassic, sporting a long wingspan,

Narrow jaws, sharp teeth, and tiny little legs,

Remy rhamphorhynchus!

[Cheers and applause]

And please welcome today's cretaceous flyer,

The bristle-jawed teddy pterodaustro!

[Cheers and applause]

All right, competitors,

Here's the course you'll be flying--

First between hanging vines,

Then you will swoop through a canyon,

Then push through a wind tunnel!

Then you flyers will slalom over and under branches,

Grab the food that you eat from the pond,

And bring that food back with you

As you race to the finish line!

Contestants, to your starting positions!

Take it away, our commentators, buddy and don!

- Thanks, mr. The mayor.

I must say, your frill looks amazing today.

- And speaking of amazing features,

How about the bristle-like teeth on mr. Pterodaustro?

Am I right?

- Aw, thanks, buddy!

Our jaws are pretty one-of-a-kind

For pterosaurs.

- Good luck today, teddy!

Now to our triassic athlete. Don?

- How are you feeling, mrs. Peteinosaurus?

- Huge crowd, giant race,

Everyone watching...

- You'll be great, mrs. Peteinosaurus.

Deep breaths.

- I guess I'm a little nervous about racing.

And since I'm the smallest pterosaur here,

I know I'll have to work harder

And pace myself.

- We know you'll race hard, mrs. P!

- There we go, buddy.

What do you hear from team jurassic?

- I don't do interviews. I just race.

- Okay, then. No interviews.

Mr. Mayor?

- The classic in the jurassic air obstacle relay race

Is about to begin!

Racers, on your marks...

- Get set...

All: go!

[Cheers and applause]

- Go, mrs. Peteinosaurus! Go!

[Wind whistling]

- The contestants are now approaching

The first obstacle:

Hanging vines!

- Remember, weave around each vine!

- Mrs. Peteinosaurus is first.

- With remy close behind!

- Pace yourself, peggy. Flap, flap, flap...

[Vines rustling]

- [Grunting]

- Ooh! That looks like it hurts!

- Teddy's in third!

His longer wings make it harder

To swing around the vines.

So far, the smaller pterosaurs have a big advantage!

- [Laughs]

Yeah!

Go, tiny power!

Oh, um, I mean...

Great race, everyone!

On to obstacle number two!

Our contestants must fly between

The walls of this narrow canyon.

- Without touching either wall.

Good luck, racers!

- Peggy peteinosaurus comes through first.

With her little wings, she has to flap hard.

- But since she's little,

She can zip right between the rocks.

- Next up, teddy, whose big wings

Are pulling him ahead of remy.

- Ha! I don't think so.

- Whoa! Hey!

- [Trills and whistles]

I'm race referee, and you can't do that, remy!

It's against the rules!

- What?

Just a little friendly competition,

Right, teddy?

- Oh, yeah, right,

A little friendly competition!

- Now teddy glides through the canyon

And zooms toward...

The ground?

[Stones clacking]

- Um, mr. Pterodaustro?

You're in the middle of a race, remember?

- Oh, I know.

I'm just loading up on some gastroliths for later.

Both: gastroliths?

- Yep!

We pterodaustros swallow little stones

That sit in our stomach.

Then when we eat, the stones, called gastroliths,

Are there to help mush up the food

So we can digest it better!

Both: stones? Really?

- Really.

- Wow!

Did you hear that, race fans?

That's a classic in the jurassic extra exclusive:

Pterodaustros use gastroliths to digest their food.

- Hey, here's another extra:

The race is still going on,

And remy and peggy are already

On the third obstacle-- the wind tunnel!

- Uh-oh! Got to blow!

- Wow. It's really windy in there.

Oh, right. It's a wind tunnel.

- Teddy's longer wings

Really help him flap against this wind!

I think peggy needs a little help!

Come on, everyone!

Crowd: peggy! Peggy!

- Yay! - Go, peggy!

- Whoo-hoo!

Next, we're on to the branches

That you'll fly over and under!

Peggy peteinosaurus takes the lead!

- Wow! Anyone could win this race!

They're beak-and-beak!

- Tiny power, mrs. Peteinosaurus!

I mean... Go, racers!

- Head for the last obstacle--

The pond!

- Must find a fish...

And win!

- I'm looking for insects!

- Every racer has to grab the kind of food

That their species eats,

Then fly it back to the finish line!

- I could find a fish...

- Don, we can't help the contestants.

That would be cheating.

- It's not about the contestants, mom.

It's just me-- I'm hungry!

[Slurps]

- Ooh! I see an insect!

- And I see a fish!

[Water splashes]

- All three contestants are grabbing food at once!

Now they're racing back to the finish line!

Oh, my gosh!

Who's gonna win?

- Only one way to find out!

Let's fly!

[Screeches]

- Here they come! Right this way, contestants!

- They're so close!

I think teddy and his big wings have it!

- But peggy's working really hard.

And remy's still in it too.

- It's...it's...

[Chirps]

Teddy is first!

And...

[Chirping]

Mrs. Peteinosaurus is second!

[Cheers and applause]

- Go, teddy! - Good job!

- Great race, teddy!

Mmm! Yum!

And a great snack too!

- Hold it! Teddy cheated!

He doesn't have a fish!

[Crowd gasps]

- Wait a minute!

I'm a referee, and I saw teddy

Dive into that pond, so I know he has a fish!

Open your mouth and show us, teddy!

- Um, I don't see a fish. Just water.

- Just water? No fish at all?

- Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait!

Teddy was supposed to get

The food his species eats, right?

Well, I know a little about pterodaustro.

Look!

The water strains through teddy's bristle teeth,

And what's left is...

- Teddy food!

- Delicious teddy food!

Crustaceans and plankton!

- Which means teddy pterodaustro is the winner!

Hip-hip...

All: hooray!

Hip-hip-hooray! Hip-hip-hooray!

- [Growls]

I tried, I cheated, but I still couldn't win!

- Thank you for a great race, everyone!

Good race, peggy!

- Ooh, thanks!

I paced myself, and it worked.

- Hoo!

- Hi there.

I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist.

Now, I'm sure you all know

That tiny, shiny, and don are pterosaurs,

Or flying reptiles, called pteranodon.

Pteranodon had many pterosaur cousins,

Including the very strange looking pterodaustro.

Pterodaustro was a pterosaur that lived

In the cretaceous period.

Unlike pteranodon, which probably dove into the water

To catch fish,

Pterodaustro probably fed mostly on

Small hard-shelled water animals called crustaceans,

Like shrimp, crayfish, and lobsters.

Pterodaustro had a mouthful of teeth--

Hundreds of long bristle-like teeth along the lower jaw

And small rounder teeth up top.

Instead of diving into the water,

We think that pterodaustro stood in the water

To catch its food.

It would take a huge mouthful of water

And then use a special and unusual technique

Called filter feeding.

Pterodaustro filtered the water through its bristle teeth,

Leaving only the crustaceans it wanted to eat.

The modern animal most similar to pterodaustro

Is the flamingo.

Not only are flamingos filter feeders,

But some scientists think

That pterodaustro may have been pink,

Just like flamingos,

Because of its similar diet.

Okay, get outside, get into nature,

And make your own discoveries.

I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist.

Most paleontologists think

That cryolophosaurus, like king,

Used their crests to show off to other cryolophosaurus.

Why would we think that?

Because plenty of animals living today,

Such as birds, use strange features

To display to each other.

Most often, it's the males--

The boys, that is--

That do the showing off.

Here's a male frigate bird,

Which puffs out a big red pouch in its neck.

And how about the amazing tail feather display

Of male peacocks?

Sometimes the male birds do crazy dances

While they're showing off.

Check out the cool moves of this bird of paradise.

In other bird species,

The girl and boy birds dance together.

Get a load of this pair of albatrosses.

Since many birds living today

Use strange features and wild dances to show off,

It makes sense that dinosaurs did the same thing.
