- Hoo!

[Kids cheering]

- [Squawks] mr. Conductor,

What's today's super exciting sporting event?

- Glad you asked, miss tiny.

Today is the biggest and best event of all,

The ultimate face-off!

- Hooray!

The ultimate face-off.

Wait, what's the ultimate face-off?

- Well, it's called that

Because pairs of dinosaurs

From each time period face off,

Competing to demonstrate strength, endurance, and agility

In a kind of wrestling match.

Kids: a wrestling match?

- Indeedy-do!

The face-offs are chosen

From the top carnivore predators

Of each time period

And the top herbivore quadrupeds

That defend themselves

With their special features.

- Like horns and armor? - Right, buddy!

And the team from the time period

That puts on the most entertaining show

Wins!

From the cretaceous,

We have t. Rex facing off with triceratops.

It'll be teeth and claws versus horns!

Kids: ooh!

- High-two, t*nk!

- High-four, buddy!

- And from the jurassic, we have--

- Oh! Allosaurus and stegosaurus?

- Absolutely right, tiny.

It's teeth and claws

Versus plates and spikes!

[Kids cheer]

- But who's in the face-off for team triassic?

They don't have big carnivores or big quadrupeds.

Do they?

- Excellent question, miss shiny.

The triassic matchup

Is a couple of dinosaurs

That you may not have seen before...

Zupaysaurus and riojasaurus!

Kids: cool!

- Note the pair of parallel crests

On zupaysaurus's head.

It has speed, agility,

Clawed feet and hands,

And a mouth full of sharp teeth!

- Rawr! Yeah!

- And zupaysaurus is paired against riojasaurus,

A quadrupedal herbivore,

Which comes from a family called prosauropods.

Kids: prosauropods!

- So how can the herbivore riojasaurus protect itself

Against the carnivore zupaysaurus?

- Yeah, he doesn't have horns like triceratops.

- Or spikes like stegosaurus.

- True, but although zupaysaurus

Has speed and sharp teeth,

Riojasaurus has its own features

To help ward off predators!

It has a long tail and size too;

It's bigger than zupaysaurus!

- Well, that's all pretty neat,

But I'm rooting for team cretaceous anyway.

To me, there's no cooler matchup

Than triceratops and t. Rex!

- Yeah!

Kids: boris tyrannosaurus!

- Oh, hi, kids!

Say, have you met the other half of team cretaceous?

This is trevor triceratops.

- Oh, hey! Hi, t*nk.

I'm so glad you came!

Mr. Triceratops.

Kids: yay!

Kids: okay, trevor!

- So do you kids have any questions

About the big face-off?

- Yeah, does anyone actually get hurt?

- Not at all!

The judges give us points for putting on the best show.

And to put on a good show,

We make sure that neither of us gets hurt.

So it's all about showmanship, kids.

- Ooh, speaking of showmanship, boris,

When you jump at me

And make like you're trying to bite my frill...

- Hoo!

- Hi there.

I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist.

There were many dome-headed dinosaurs.

They probably used their thick domes

To try to show that they were the strongest.

The largest of the dome heads

Was a plant-eating dinosaur

Called "pachycephalosaurus,"

A name that means "thick-headed lizard."

Pachycephalosaurus lived alongside t. Rex,

But the bony dome of this plant eater

Probably wasn't used

To fight off the giant meat eater.

Instead, many paleontologists think

That pachycephalosaurus used its thick dome

To the butt the sides of other pachycephalosaurus.

Other dinosaurs, such as einiosaurus,

Probably used their headgear

To fight with each other too.

Today animals have lots of different ways

To figure out who's the biggest and strongest.

Many species use horns to fight each other.

Check out these african antelopes.

The male antelopes lock horns together

And have pushing and shoving contests.

And how about these mountain goats?

The males use their sharp pointed horns

To hit the sides of other mountain goats.

Because so many kinds of animals today

Use their headgear

Mostly to fight with others of the same kind,

Paleontologists think that a lot of dinosaurs,

Like pachycephalosaurus,

Did the very same thing.

Okay, keep watching for more dinosaur discoveries.

- Hello, folks.

There can't be anything before the age of dinosaurs.

- I don't know.

But I bet if we went all the way

To the beginning of the triassic,

Maybe we could find out.

Erma eoraptor could help us!

Your dad and shiny and don are off fishing,

So we can meet them back here for dinner!

Ready?

May I tag along?

- Mr. Conductor, do you know anything

About the time before dinosaurs?

I mean, was there a time before the dinosaurs?

- Buddy, tiny,

There were actually billions of years

Before the mesozoic era!

And the time right before the triassic

Is called the permian time period,

Which was part of the bigger paleozoic era.

Both: the permian time period

In the paleozoic era!

- Precisely!

In this earlier time period,

There were all kinds of amazing creatures

In the sea and on land,

Such as dimetrodon!

- Wow. What kind of dinosaur is that?

- News flash, tiny.

Dimetrodon is not a dinosaur,

Because there were no dinosaurs in the permian.

Both: [gasp] no dinosaurs?

- There were no dinosaurs

Before the triassic time period.

Dimetrodon belonged to an animal group

Called synapsids,

Which includes the ancestors of all mammals.

- I have a hypothesis!

Maybe dimetrodon used its fin for showing off.

- Good thinking, buddy!

It's likely that it used its sail fin

To show off,

Just like how theropods use their crests.

Or dimetrodon may have also used its fin

To control its body temperature.

- Was dimetrodon a herbivore?

- Dimetrodon was a carnivore,

And very likely one of the top carnivores

In its ecosystem.

- I wish I could meet this other top carnivore.

- Well, maybe we can!

Here's the plan:

We'll ride the train back to the triassic,

Find erma,

Then we can take the handcarts

Down the little track

To the end of the train line.

- Yay!

The handcarts are so much fun!

- Aren't they?

And at the end of the line,

We can walk through a little-known,

Pedestrians-only time tunnel

That will bring us even further back in time,

Hopefully to the permian.
