- Hello, folks. It's me, the Conductor.

Today, we'll take the train to Red Rock Canyon

where we'll see a King and Crystal

Cryolophosaurus concert!

So come on along with me on the "Dinosaur Train."

All aboard!

- ♪ Dinosaur Train, Dinosaur Train ♪

♪ Once upon a time, there was a mom ♪

♪ Her name was Mrs. Pteranodon ♪

♪ Sitting on her nest, she heard a scratching and said ♪

- Oh, boy, my eggs are hatching!

- ♪ One by one, her kids popped free ♪

♪ Baby Pteranodons, one, two, three ♪

- I'll name you Tiny, Shiny, and Don.

- ♪ But Tiny said ♪ - Wait, there's one more, Mom.

- ♪ The last little baby was a different size ♪

♪ With teeth and a tail and big green eyes ♪

♪ He didn't look anything like the rest ♪

- What am I doing in a Pteranodon nest?

- ♪ But dear old Mrs. Pteranodon said ♪

- Oh, this is your family, and I'm your mom.

You may be different, but we're all creatures.

All dinosaurs have different features.

Come on, Buddy, we'll take a vacation.

I'll get us a ticket at Pteranodon Station.

We'll travel the world in sunshine and rain

and meet all the species on the...

[train whistle toots]

- ♪ The Dinosaur Train ♪

- [roars]

[light music]

- Ah, it's great to be back in the Jurassic Antarctic again.

- Yeah, to visit our friend King Cryolophosaurus!

- And Crystal Cryolophosaurus!

[squawks] - [panting]

Mind if I join you folks?

I have an important message

to deliver to King and Crystal!

- Really? What is it?

- Oh-ho, you'll see!

all: Hi, King! Hi, Crystal!

- [exclaiming in surprise]

Heya, it's you, Buddy! Hi, Tiny!

Uh, and you, too, Miss Pteranodon!

What's shakin', little mama? - Oh!

It's King to good you--

I mean it's good to King you--

I mean to see you, King!

It's good! - Mrs. P and Tiny and Buddy!

Welcome to the Jurassic Antarctic!

And hello, Mr. Conductor. What brings you to our place?

- [clears throat] King, Crystal,

I have great news for both of you!

You have been offered the chance to sing your songs

at the big festival at Red Rock Amphitheater!

- Red Rock Amphitheater?

Wow! This is big time, King.

I've dreamed of playing the Red Rock my whole life.

Why, it's every rock and roll dream I've ever had.

- So you'll do it? - Well, uh--

- Yes! Ready and rarin' to go! - Well, uh, Crystal,

y-you know I-I get nervous before any gig--

- Oh, I know you do, King. - This one's a big-y.

I mean, the Red Rock Amphitheater.

Whoa, man! It's not just big, it's huge, baby!

Whoo-ha! - Don't worry, King.

You two are the best rock and roll singers ever!

- You'll both be great, I know it!

- The kids are right, King.

We'll all be there, cheering you on!

- You know that means the world to me,

havin' you there by my side. both: [gasps] You mean,

we're going to Red Rock?

- I guess we're all going. Hoo-hah!

- [squawks] So what have you been working on?

- Oh, we're working on a brand-new song, Tiny.

We're thinking of calling it "Rockin' the Cretaceous."

both: ♪ We're rockin' ♪

♪ We're rockin' ♪

♪ Baby, can't you hear me knockin'? ♪

♪ We're walkin', talkin' ♪

♪ Rockin' the Creta-ceous ♪

- We don't have much more than that.

I think it's gonna need a second verse.

- I love it! - Me too!

But how about for this show,

you change "Rockin' the Cretaceous"

to "Red Rockin' the Cretaceous"?

- Yeah, a special Red Rock version.

- Oh, I love that idea.

Red Rockin' the Creta-ceous!

[chuckles] Well, we can finish it once we get to Red Rock.

- You'll have to. The show is tonight!

all: Tonight? - [mumbling]

To-to-tonight? - Yes indeedy-do!

In fact, hoo-hoo, we'd better get to the train station!

[cheering]

- Let's go, everybody!

- Oh, man. [nervous mumbling]

- [squawks] I'm so excited! - Me too, Tiny.

Especially since tonight is our anniversary.

Five years ago today, King and I first met.

- [gasps] Wow!

- I wonder if King remembered. - [squawks]

Of course he remembered your anniversary!

- Ooh, hey man! H-hey!

- All aboard the Dinosaur Train

to Red Rock Station, in the Cretaceous Time Period!

[indistinct chatter]

[train whistle blares]

- Psst, King, did you get anything

for Crystal for your anniversary?

- Uh a-a-anniversary!? [both laughing]

Anniversary? Oh, no. I-I completely forgot.

What am I gonna get Crystal for our anniversary, man?

- Well, we're already on our way

to the Red Rock festival. - So the real question is,

what can you get Crystal that's at Red Rock?

- Man, I hope there's a gift shop.

- So, since everyone's headed to the big Red Rock Festival--

[cheering]

Let's talk about how those Red Rock cliffs came to be,

and some surprising things you can find in them!

Here's where we are going--

to the cliffs in these mountains.

But did you know that these mountains

used to be the ocean floor?

And that you can find Triassic fossils

of marine creatures in those Cretaceous Red Rock cliffs?

[amazed chatter]

- How did fossils of sea creatures get way up there?

- Glad you asked, Mr. Stygimoloch!

It's because the Earth is made of huge plates!

- Like my plates? - Well yes,

but quite a bit bigger, Morris.

These plates float over a core of molten hot stuff.

- Aw, man. I gotta think of a present.

What would Crystal really, really like?

- [clears throat] The plates slowly shift

and bump into each other,

pushing huge land masses up from the sea bottom

to the top--and that former ocean bottom

becomes mountains and cliffs,

which often contain fossils

of marine creatures from the Triassic Ocean.

- Ah, ya think the gift shop--wait a minute, man!

Did he say fossils? In the Red Rock cliffs?

both: Yep, that's what he said.

- Aw, c'mon. Those cliffs are miles from any ocean, baby!

At Red Rock? That is truly the nuttiest thing

I've ever heard! There is no way--

- Uh, fossils of sea creatures like this!

- Whoa! Golly, man! Are you tellin' me

that seashell fossil comes from the cliffs at Red Rock?

- Well, that is what I have been saying.

- Aw, Crystal loves seashells, man!

And that is one fantastic-looking seashell!

What's it called? both: An ammonite.

- Wow. Mr. Conductor, I was completely wrong

and you were completely right!

Let's go find a big ol' ammonite for Crystal!

Anniversary gift problem solved, baby! Hoo-ha!

- [laughs] That's what I love about singin' with King.

- [under breath] Anniversary gift problem solved, baby.

[wheels screeching]

[indistinct chatter]

- First thing we need to do is find the Red Rock Amphitheater.

C'mon, King! - First thing we need to do

is find those famous Red Rock cliffs,

full of seashell fossils and stuff.

There, man! Up that way looks cliffy.

What are we waitin' for? Let's get diggin'.

Go, man, go! Hoo-wah!

[rock and roll music]

♪ ♪

[indistinct chatter]

- Hello, are you working on the show?

- Um, yeah, I'm a Roustabout.

- Do you know when King and Crystal Cryolophosaurus

are going on? - Uh, mm...

well, you're on after this act. - We're on next?

- Uh-huh, and um, their act is short.

[banjo music playing]

- Oh, no, I gotta find King, and finish our song, quick!

I'll be right back!

- Oh, wow, man. This must be the place.

The Red Rock cliffs. Hoo-ha!

This'll just take a minute, man.

We find a giant ol' ammonite fossil for Crystal,

and then head on down to perform our song.

Now, for the love of rock and roll, everybody,

dig, baby! C'mon! Ammonite me! Hoo-hah!

- King? King? - [gasps]

[crashing]

Oh, Crystal. I am so glad I found you.

It's almost time to perform!

- But I lost King, and I can't find him!

- Oh, wait! I remember King saying something

about taking the Pteranodon family

to the red rock cliffs to look for fossils.

- Fossils? What is he thinking?

- Well, you can ask when we find him!

To the Red Rock cliffs! [thumping]

- King Cryolophosaurus!

- Oh! Hey, Crystal! What's shakin', baby?

- King, it's time to go on stage!

- It is? - Are--

are you digging for fossils?

- Uh, yeah, Crystal, I--

- We're supposed to finish our new song.

You told me that you'd help finish it,

and then here you are diggin--

[gasps] - Uh,

happy anniversary, baby!

- You remembered our anniversary.

- Well, yeah! - Oh, King.

It's the most beautiful fossil I've ever seen.

You know I love seashells

especially Triassic ones!

Aw, honey. - [chuckles]

- Yep, I can identify this fossil

as a coiled ammonite from the Triassic Time Period!

Millions and millions of years old!

- Uh, wait. Now how did it get up here again?

I wasn't really listening when you explained it

on the train, man. - King, sweetie, we gotta go.

- Well, I'll be brief.

The Earth's surface is made up of giant plates

that move slowly around, bumping into each other.

When they collide, they push the Earth though some changes,

by pushing up mountain ranges!

- Hold the whistle, man.

I like how you rhymed "put the Earth through some changes"

with "pushing up mountain ranges, baby."

Maybe we could put it in our song!

- King! Our song! We have to finish it!

And we have to be on stage! - Aw, don't worry, baby.

These marine fossils gave me some ideas.

I'll sing 'em to you on our way there.

We'll wing it!

- That's what I love about singing with you, King--

you're always full of surprises.

[indistinct chatter]

[thumping]

- Dinosaurs, Pterosaurs, and other assorted creatures!

Would you please put your paws and claws together

for the rockin'-est, sockin'-est,

greatest singing duo in the Cretaceous,

from the Jurassic, they're fantastic,

King and Crystal Cryolophosaurus!

[yelps] - Why, thank you.

- Best anniversary ever, baby! How 'bout that rhyme?

Pushin' up some mighty mighty mountain ranges! Hoo-ha!

- [laughs] That's what I love about you, King.

You always surprise me.

[cheers and applause]

- Hi, there, I'm Dr. Scott the paleontologist.

Have you ever wanted to actually work with fossils?

Well, in some museums, you can.

You can actually prepare the fossils

just like a real paleontologist.

[dinosaur roars]

[indistinct chatter]

[upbeat music]

- Hi, I'm Sue. I'm a science educator.

We're at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry

in the paleontology lab.

I teach a class here where kids get to work

with real fossils.

We do have dinosaur fossils

We have a triceratops that is million years old,

and kids get to help clean the rock from the bones

using brushes and dental picks

just like the ones dentists use to clean your teeth.

We also have air scribe station

where kids use an air tool to get

hard rock off of shell fossils.

So they're helping us to clean these fossils

using the same tools that we use.

It's great because kids and adults get to do

hands-on science, so they're involved

in the real work that paleontologists do.

It takes a long time to clean a fossil,

but in the end it's worth it.

- This is really fun.

all: We love fossils!

[dinosaur roar]

- All right, get outside,

get into those museums, and make your own discoveries.

- Hello, folks. It's me, the Conductor!

Today the Pteranodon kids meet a childhood friend

of Dad's, an expert flier named Nick Nyctosaurus!

So come on along with me on the Dinosaur Train!

All aboard!

[adventurous music]

- [zooming noises] Incoming!

Hello, Pteranodons!

- Hey, you made it! Heh.

Kids, this is my friend Nick Nyctosaurus.

We were kids together!

all: Hi, Nick! - Good to see you, Nick!

This is Buddy, Tiny, Shiny, and Don!

- Hiya, kids! [all giggle]

- I don't think we've met any of Dad's old friends.

- Hmm, I guess not, heh.

Yeah, Nick and I were best buds as kids.

Now he's an expert flier,

who competes in different flying contests

all around the Cretaceous!

all: Wow!

- Yeah, it's all true.

In fact, I have a flying contest

at Quetzalcoatlus Canyon tomorrow.

- We've been there. It's big!

- And windy! - Really?

Oh, good to know. Thanks!

- Mr. Nick, did you and Dad fly a lot when you were kids?

- Ah, we sure did. All day long.

Oh, and your dad was good-- fast, fierce, and fun!

- Hey, I still am!

- Same here.

That's what I've been doing all these years--flying!

- Nick, we like to do a feature check

when we meet new friends.

- Well, you're probably wondering about my crest.

You want to know a secret-- it's all for show!

[chuckles] Pretty cool, huh? all: Yeah!

- I also noticed that you don't seem to have claws.

- Well, I have some.

- Wow! Uh, what's...going on?

- Eh, it's normal for a Nyctosaurus, Shiny, heh.

We're hatched without claws on these three fingers.

So sometimes I have a hard time hanging onto things

on the ground. [yelping, thud]

Heh. But it's just who I am.

- Oh! That's why you spend most of your time flying.

- Exactly. That's our Nick!

- Wow, you are four smart kids!

Oh, and speaking of flying, I gotta practice.

Wanna join me? all: Yes!

♪ ♪

- Something all flyers of any size or age

should know about-- "aerodynamics"!

all: Aerodynamics.

- Aerodynamics helps us flyers save energy

and makes us fly faster!

- Whoo-hoo! I love flying faster!

- Me too, Don! Okay.

First, your Dad and I are going to show you a cool technique

called "skimming."

- [squawks] Is it called that

because you skim over the water?

- Bingo, Tiny! Heh, exactly.

- First, you fly close to the water.

The airflow made by flapping helps speed up our flying.

- And makes the air push you more.

- See? We're skimming! [laughs] Join us!

all: We're skimming, too! Whee!

- Whoops.

Whoops again!

- Whoa, looking good! Great skimming, Don!

- [laughing] - Whoa!

- [chuckles] How about these kids, huh?

Go, Team Pteranodon!

- This is my favorite flying maneuver.

It's called "dynamic soaring," and here's how I do it!

You fly just over the water then turn in a few circles!

That makes more wind, and then you soar!

all: Wow!

- [squawks] I'm hardly moving my wings.

This is amazing!

- Spread your wings and soar!

[chuckles] Didn't we used to do this "dynamic soaring" move

back in the day? - Yep, all the time.

- [chuckles] I didn't know it had that fancy name.

- Hey, ol' pal, one more figure eight?

Just like the good ol' days?

[cheering]

- Nick, watch us do a loop-de-loop!

- Hoo-hoo!

- Now here comes the dive!

- Wow, Don! That's like a pro flyer move!

C'mon, let's do it together!

[cheering]

Gotta say, I nailed it!

- Nick, don't you ever stop to rest?

- Not if I can help it! [laughs]

- [panting] Okay, well, you kids uh, you kids rest.

- C'mon, old guy, wanna see

if you can still fly higher than me?

- Ah, nah, I'm good. Heh.

That was a blast, but, uh, after we rest,

it's time for the kids to help their Mom get dinner ready.

- But there's still daylight. Plenty of time to fly!

- [yawns] We've done a lot of flying today.

- Well, okay, but tomorrow I'll teach you kids

another secret flying technique.

Bright and early!

- Uh, come on up for dinner, Nick!

- Hoo-hoo!

- [squawks] - [gulps]

Um, Mr. Nick?

Can't you stay in one place and not move?

- [chuckles] I can try, but I hardly ever do.

Even when I sleep. I only have flying dreams.

- [chuckles] I'm not surprised.

- I know! Mr. Nick, let's have a stay-very-still contest.

Watch us...

- [yelps, laughs]

Well, you kids win! I tried, though!

Okay, who's up for an after-dinner fly around?

[all yawn]

- That big yawn tells me that you kids

are done flying for the day.

- I'm awake! Wide. Awake. Kind of...

- [zooming noises] Hoo-hoo!

- Ah. Uh, all right, Nick,

we're all going to sleep now.

[insects chirping]

[birds chirping]

[soft music]

- [yawns]

- Good morning! Who's ready to fly up high

and learn a new technique?

- Ooh, ooh, ooh! - Nice, did you sleep at all?

- Yeah, my usual amount-- just enough.

- Good morning, Nick.

First we'll have breakfast, then clean up, then flying!

And I may join in today.

After all, Nick will be leaving here soon...

- Guess what? I may actually stay a few more days.

- Ah, but don't you have a competition to go to, Nick?

- I'm still deciding! It's pretty fun here.

both: Oh [chuckle awkwardly]

[adventurous music]

- See, we're in the classic "V" formation!

There's a big aerodynamic advantage

when we all fly very close like this.

So, keep close, flap hard, then glide!

The strong air current from the friend in front of you

keeps everyone moving.

- [squawks] Room for one more?

all: Yay, Mom!

- All right, Mrs. P! Now we do dynamic soaring...

Okay, let's stay in the "V" and skim the water...

- Can we stop flying for awhile?

I want to play something else.

[affirmative chatter]

- I think I even need a break from being flown.

My arms are getting tired.

- But, guys, what could be better than flying?

Come on, I'll show you some more cool tricks!

- Hey, uh, maybe later, Nick.

Everyone needs some down time.

- I have a seashell necklace I've been wanting to finish.

- I'm thinking of going to my Tiny Place.

- And I'm hungry.

Plus I need to dig a hole. Is that okay?

- Yeah, hole is good. - Uh, yeah.

- Well, you could come up and play something else

with us, Nick. - Hmm.

play something... else?

[jaunty music]

- Tickets! Tickets, please!

- Right here!

- Having fun on the train, Mr. Nick?

- You know, "Mr. Conductor," I am!

- Maybe after this, you want to help with my shell necklace?

- [squawks]

- [giggles]

- Heh! It's a completely different Nick.

- [squawks] Try not to let it fall.

- Ha-ha! You know, I haven't done anything just for fun--

besides flying-- for as long as I can remember.

[laughter]

- Okay, Nick! What do you want to do next?

[meditation music]

- Well, unfortunately, I have to leave today.

all: What? - I've made a big decision--

I'm going to my competition after all.

It's a major one--only the best of the best are invited.

- You do know a lot of flying tricks!

- [squawks] Yeah. You're so aerodynamic!

- Mom and Dad, can we go with Nick and watch the competition?

- I love that idea!

Especially since it'll be my last.

all: What? Really?

- Yup. I've decided to stop competing after this contest.

You Pteranodons showed me there's more to life

than diving, swooping, and doing cool flying tricks.

- We did? - [laughs] Yeah.

- Hmm. Maybe if you don't fly as much, Nick,

then when you come back to it, it'll be more special.

- Well I like that idea, Mrs P. Heh. A lot!

- Well, then this is a competition

that the team absolutely cannot miss.

We're coming too! - [squawks] Yeah!

We're Team Nick! all: Yeah!

Nick! Nick! Nick!

- To the Dinosaur Train! And Quetzalcoatlus Canyon!

all: Whoo-hoo!

- Pretty huge canyon you have here, Mr. Quetzalcoatlus.

[laughs] Hope I don't get lost!

[laughter]

- Racers, once around the canyon!

Ready,

set..

fly!

[exciting music]

all: [gasp] Dynamic soaring!

♪ ♪

[gasp] "V" formation!

- Hey, Nick's doing our move-- the loop-de-loop!

- [zooming noises]

[all squawking]

Whoo-hoo!

[cheering]

all: Nick! Nick! Nick!

- Thanks for showing me that amazing move--

the Pteranodon loop-de-loop!

I really learned something from you Pteranodons.

You know, maybe your simpler, more down-to-earth way

of life is the way I should go.

Daw, who am I kidding? I have to be me!

I gotta fly! So long!

all: Bye, Nick!

- Free bird!

- Hi, there. I'm Dr. Scott the paleontologist,

and we're here in the Natural History Museum

of Los Angeles County in the paleontology collections.

Inside these drawers are fossils,

millions of fossils,

and it's here that all the fossils come

after they're prepared in the paleontology lab.

This is the lower jaw of a marine reptile

a Tylosaur, like a Mosasaur,

that lived during the age of dinosaurs,

and every fossil in here has a card that goes with it.

And that card records what kind of animal it is,

when it was found, where it was found,

even who found it.

This one was found by JR McDonald

Each one of these drawers then

and all these cabinets has more fossils.

Here is another full lower jaw

of another Tylosaur or Mosasaur,

and you can see the jawbone and the teeth inside.

It's amazing to think that millions of years ago

this fossil was part of animal that swam in the oceans,

and here it is housed in the museum forever,

so that paleontologists, people like me,

can come and do the science

'cause this is where the science really happens.

This is where we make discoveries,

right here in this room.

[upbeat music]
