- Where do rivers come from?

- A river starts as a tiny stream made of rain water

Like that little stream over there.

The stream cuts down into the earth

And carries the sediments, or dirt, downstream.

This process is called erosion.

[Together] erosion.

- What did he say?

Eraser? expl*si*n?

- Erosion. - Oh.

- And as more and more little streams

Flow into one river,

It grows bigger and bigger.

Our little river is joining a bigger river now.

[Together] ooh!

A bigger river.

- See how this bigger river cuts through these hills?

Over time, rivers change the land

By carving new paths for themselves.

So if the rivers carve out the land,

Where does all that dirt go?

- Sometimes, rivers carry so much dirt downstream,

They can build a whole new piece of land.

Here's what we call a sandbar.

This is dirt and sand that the river

Carried down and deposited here.

- And now, it's a habitat,

A home to many plants and creatures

That are specialized for living in the water.

- Hello! We're the nature trackers.

- Hi, there.

I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist.

All dinosaurs needed water to survive

Just like you do.

And just like animals living today,

Most dinosaurs got their drinking water

From streams, rivers, and lakes.

Believe it or not, water can actually change

The shape of the land over time.

When water flows over rocks,

The rock slowly wears away

In a process called erosion.

See this canyon?

There's a river at the very bottom of it.

A long time ago, there was no canyon here

And the ground was flat.

But over thousands of years,

The river slowly cut down through the rock,

Creating the canyon we see today.

If the ground is flat,

Rivers tend to flow slower and wind more.

If the ground is steep, like on the side of a mountain,

The water moves much faster and in more of a straight line,

Sometimes forming rapids.

Faster water causes more erosion,

Cutting down through the rock much quicker.

The water flowing in rivers

Comes from rain or snow that falls from the sky.

During dry seasons, rivers become much shallower

And sometimes even dry up completely.

But when it rains a lot, rivers get deeper and stronger,

Causing even more erosion.

Okay, remember, get outside,

Get into nature, and make your own discoveries.

If you find it a little more difficult to breathe,

Don't worry because this is normal.

The tree line-- or timberline--

Is a point high on the mountain

Now, can anybody guess how the trees are affected?

Because herbivores need more food

After climbing up all that way.

Any others?

- I have a hypothesis.

Maybe since the mountain gets taller and taller,
