Yadina: Whee! Brad: Woohoo!

Yadina: [giggles]

Brad: Um, hi! Welcome to the sho-ooooow!

Xavier: [grunts] Today we're meeting an amazing DJ

who changed music forever:

Brad: Phew! Xavier: Grandmaster Flash.

Brad: A DJ is someone who plays recorded music for an audience.

♪ [DJ beatboxing]

Xavier: When Grandmaster Flash first started to DJ

in the s, this is what he played music on:

a turntable!

It was his musical instrument AND his science lab.

Brad: How is this a science lab?

Yadina: When you use it to experiment with!

Brad: Oof! Too close!

Xavier: I wonder what would happen

if we move this thing back and forth?

♪♪

[eee-uu-eee-uu]

Brad: Whoa! Ooof!

[CLICK]

[giggles]

Xavier: Alright! Yeah!

Uu-uuh. Oh, yeah!

Brad: Da da da da, da da...

Phew! I think I'm...

all danced out!

Yadina: You can't be, Brad.

Xavier's dance party is tonight!

Xavier: With live music our friends can dance to!

Check it!

♪ [off-key playing "Hot Cross Buns"] ♪

Uh, is it just me,

or is recorder music not very...

dance-y?

Yadina: It's not just you.

Brad: Maybe we need more instruments.

Yadina: [gasps] Yeah, like drums and a guitar.

Xavier: Great idea!

Anybody got drums?

Or a guitar?

Brad: Uhm...

Xavier: Oh, this is bad.

I promised all my friends an awesome dance party

with live music, but that won't happen

if I only have a recorder!

Yadina: I think we know exactly what to do.

Xavier: [excited gasp]

Brad: [hopeful] Throw a nice reading party instead?

Xavier/Yadina: To the Secret Museum!

♪♪

Brad: [sighs] Of course.

Wait for me!

♪♪

Xavier: I wonder who the Secret Museum will send us to meet?

♪♪

Yadina: And where we'll go?

♪♪

Brad: And when?

♪♪

Yadina: Look out below! Xavier: Woohoo!

Yadina/Xavier: Hi, Berby! Berby: [bleep blarp]

Brad: Hi, Berby! Berby: [blarp bloop]

Brad: Upf!

Xavier: [humming]

We're getting something!

Brad: What's that?!

Yadina: Some kind of... pizza cooker?!

[whirring]

Xavier: Grandmaster Flash.

That's who we're going to meet.

Yadina: In New York, in the year .

Brad: That's, like, um,

years ago!

Yadina: Hm, I wonder if Grandmaster Flash

is a master at danceable recorder music?

Brad: Oooh...or pizza making!

Pizza makes for a pretty good party, too.

Xavier: Only one way to find out.

Ready for adventure? Yadina: Ready!

Brad: As ready as I'll ever be...

Which--which isn't that ready.

Berby: [whirring]

Yadina: Here we go!

Berby: [bleep blarp]

Xavier: It's happening! Yadina: Hang on, Dr. Zoom!

Brad: Oh! Xavier: Woohoo!

Brad: WOOOOOOAH!

Berby: [bleep blarp bloop]

♪♪

[zap]

Xavier: Whoa. So this is New York in .

This is exactly what I want my party to be like!

Brad: Uh-ah-uh-woah!

Um, hey!

That looks kinda like the artifact from the Secret Museum.

Yadina: But, if it isn't a pizza cooker,

what is it?

Grandmaster Flash: Only the most magical thing in the world:

a turntable.

See that disc that's spinning?

That's a record.

It's filled with music!

When it turns, the grooves in the record

make the needle vibrate,

and it sends the vibrations

to the speakers. Brad: Ooh!

Flash: The speakers then send the music to our ears!

Yadina: Cooool!

You sure know a lot about turntables, um...

Flash: Oh, you can call me "Flash!"

Brad: Did he say, "Flash?"

Berby: [scanning burr] Flash: ♪ Tu-tu-tu-do-do

♪ Du-du-du-du-du...

Xavier: It's him, Grandmaster Flash.

Thanks, Berby! Berby: [bleep blarp]

Flash: Hang on, this is the best part!

It's called "the get down",

because it's when everyone gets down and really dances.

♪♪

Brad: That part's over already?

I was just about to get into my groove!

Flash: I know!

Wouldn't it be great if a DJ could keep everyone moving,

dancing and having fun like that?

Xavier: That's EXACTLY what I want to do with my dance party.

But, I've only got a recorder.

Flash: I don't know much about that,

but I do know turntables,

and I bet I can figure out a way to keep the get down going...

If you want to create something new, experiment!

♪♪

An experiment is a way to test out an idea or make a discovery.

I'll experiment with different ways to keep the get down going.

Eventually I'll find one that works!

When the record was playing, the get down started here,

and ended here.

Yadina: That's where the good part is!

Flash: Exactly!

So maybe I can just replay this section over and over

to keep the get down going?

Brad: Hey, do turntables have rewind buttons?

Flash: Nope.

I've never seen a DJ do this before.

But, what if I--

[record scratches]

Uaaah!

Well that didn't work.

Hmmm...

[gasps] And here's why!

The record is sticking to this rubber pad.

If I wanted to move the record,

I'll have to put something else underneath it.

Xavier: Like what?

Flash: Good question.

When you want to create something new, experiment!

♪♪

Maybe this smooth paper will help the record

slip back and forth.

♪♪

[record scratching sounds]

[zing!]

Too thin. Next!

♪♪

Let's try this piece of polyester.

It's a lot tougher and way thicker.

♪♪

[sharp record scratch] All: Aaaah!

Flash: It's thick all right!

[giggles]

Yadina: Next!

♪♪

♪ [gentle music]

♪ [smooth dance music]

♪ [off-speed music] Brad: Grrrr!

♪♪

Xavier: Hey, that worked!

...Kinda.

Flash: Mhm!

This felt is almost perfect,

it just needs to be a bit stiffer...

[gasps] Moooom?

Can I use the spray starch and the iron?

♪♪

Now let's try again...

♪ [smooth dance music]

♪ [zick zick zick]

Brad: So cool!

The felt worked!

Kids: [cheering]

Flash: That's phase one: done.

Xavier: Phase one?!

What do you mean?

Flash: Well, I want the get down to keep going

without any stops.

I can't do that with just one turntable.

♪♪

♪ [zick zick]

See? When I pull the record back, the music stops.

Xavier: So... what are you going to do now?

Flash: If you want to create something new, experiment!

♪♪

And to continue my experiment,

I'm going to need this.

Yadina: Another turn table?

Flash: [nods] Uhm!

If I put the same record on two different turntables,

then maybe I can go back and forth

between them without stopping.

[sighs]

It'll take aaaaall the money I saved up

from my after school job but...

It's worth it!

♪♪

Okay.

Just gotta connect both turntables to this mixer,

which'll help me switch back and forth

between them while they play.

Now to add the felt...

And two copies of the same record....

Okay!

The final experiment to create a whole new way to play music.

Xavier: Cool! Brad: Let's do it!

♪ [funky dance music]

Flash: There's the get down for record .

Now, I just have to start record ,

right when the first one ends.

Wait, I didn't pull the record back far enough.

Lemme try that again.

♪♪

Oops! Now I pulled it back too far!

Hang on...

[whispers to himself] And then we just put that there.

♪♪

Ha! Did you hear that? I did it!

Xavier/Brad: Woohoo! Yadina: Yeah!

Xavier: Flash! It's like the get down never ends!

Yadina: Amazing! Flash: YES!

Xavier: Wow. Grandmaster Flash created

a totally new way to play music by experimenting.

If he can do that,

then maybe I can experiment too,

to create my own dance party back home.

Thanks for everything, Flash.

Flash: See ya! Xavier: Bye-bye!

[giggles] Berby, let's go home.

Berby: [blee blar bloop!]

♪♪

Xavier: If we want to get people dancing at our party,

we're gonna need more instruments.

Since we don't have any,

maybe we can create some...

By experimenting!

[gentle tapping]

Brad: Oww!

[boing] Yadina: Ugh!

Xavier: [deep inhale]

♪ [loud off-key notes]

[crash]

[gentle drumming]Brad: I like the sound of that!

[louder drumming]And so do my knees.

♪♪

Yadina: Dr. Zoom and I are ready to rock!

♪♪

Xavier: Let's jam!

Meeting Grandmaster Flash was ah-mazing.

He influenced how other DJs play music all around the world!

Yadina: He was the first to actually use his hands

to move the records back and forth

while they were playing.

Brad: Flash called his method for looping a piece of music

over and over again 'The quick mix theory'

and it laid the foundation for rap music.

Xavier: Which is why Grandmaster Flash is known

today as a founding father of hip-hop.

to meet Grandmaster Flash.

Brad: Who used to be a kid,

just like you and me.

Yadina: So kids like you can change the world!

Brad: I am Brad.

Yadina: I am Yadina.

Xavier: I am Xavier.

And when I want to create something new,

I'll experiment!

Just like Grandmaster Flash.

Xavier: Hello!

And welcome to the-- WHOAAA!

Ugh!

Yadina: I think you meant to say:

Welcome to the show!

Brad: Today we're meeting someone

who loved helping people:

Mary Seacole.

Yadina: Mary was an expert in

different ways to heal people,

including ones her family learned in Jamaica,

that use plants like these.

Brad: Hm... Uh, did Mary Seacole know

what to do with this plant?

Xavier: I'm not sure.

But I know what to do with it.

Let's start the show!

♪♪

Ugh-uh! Oh yeah!

Did you see that jump?

Yadina: [panting] Nice one, Xavier!

But we're still faster!

[panting]

Brad: We'll see about that!

Wooohooo--

[panting]

[bonk]

WhooooOOoohhh! [thud]

Ooo...

Ow!

Yadina: Oh no!

Brad, are you okay?

Brad: [sniffs] Um... Not really.

Eeeh!

Xavier: Don't worry. Our dad will get you all patched up.

Brad: Ooh...

Okay...

Uh, thank you, Mr. Riddle.

Yadina: Are you okay?

[giggles] Oh, turtle bandage!

Nice pick!

Xavier: Alright! Now that you're all better,

let's get back out there!

Brad: Um, I don't think I want to ride my bike anymore...

Xavier/Yadina: Huh?

Brad: Or maybe even ever...

Yadina: But you love riding bikes.

Xavier: Is it because you fell?

Brad: Mhm!

Xavier: You'll be okay!

We fall off our bikes all the time.

Yadina: Xavier's used up a whole box of bandages, just this week.

Brad: Ahh!!

Xavier: I don't think that helped.

Yadina: [gasps]

Xavier/Yadina: To the Secret Museum!

Brad: [gasps]

The Secret Museum?

Instead of riding bikes?

Okay, race you there!

WOOHOO!!

Yadina: Huh?

Xavier: Something must REALLY be wrong.

♪♪

I wonder who the Secret Museum will send us to meet?

Yadina: And where we'll go?

Brad: And when?

[cuckoo clock chimes] Aah!

Yadina: Look out below! Xavier: Woohoo!

Xavier/Yadina: Hi, Berby! Berby: [bleep blarp]

Brad: Hi, Berby! Berby: [blar bloop]

Brad: Oof!

Xavier: [humming]

We're getting something!

Yadina: A doll?

[gasps] With a scrape!

Just like Brad.

[whirring]

Xavier: Look! Mary Seacole!

That's who we're going to meet.

Yadina: In Jamaica. In the year .

Brad: That's...

over years ago!

Xavier: Ready for adventure?

Yadina: Ready!

Brad: Don't get too used to this,

but if it gets me out of biking...

Ready.

Berby: [whirring]

♪♪

Xavier: It's happening! Yadina: Hang on, Dr. Zoom!

Xavier: Woohoo!

Brad: WOOOOOOAH!

Berby: [bleep blar bloooop]

Xavier: Whoooaaa!

So this is Jamaica in .

Yadina: [gasps] Check out the big iguana!

Xavier: Really? Where? I don't see it.

Mary Seacole: [off screen] Oh, Miss Mabel--

Your leg is looking MUCH better.

Berby: [whirring]

Xavier: But I do see Mary Seacole.

Thanks, Berby!

Berby: [blar bloop]

Yadina: Hello! Oh, um...

What happened to your dolls?

Brad: Did they fall?

Mary Seacole: Oh, no.

My dolls are just pretending to be unwell.

Brad: Why would they want to do that?

Mary: To help me practice.

See, my mama is a doctress,

someone who heals people.

And I want to be just like her.

Yadina: Ooooh.

[gasps] I know what'll help your dolls:

turtle bandages!

They're the best!

Mary: A bandage is good for Miss Mabel's leg.

I don't have a turtle one,

but I think this'll do fine.

A bandage won't help Miss Shirley though,

she has a fever.

Xavier: Oh...

What are you going to do?

Mary: Well, there are many ways

to help someone feel better.

Miss Mabel gets a clean bandage every day,

and Miss Shirley gets a special tea to lower the fever.

They both get lots of cuddles!

Brad/Yadina: Awww.

Xavier: [chuckles]

[boing] Huh?!

Hmmm...?

Mary's Mom: [off screen] Mary, come here, please.

I need your help with a patient.

Mary: Comin' Mama!

Mary's Mom: This is Errol.

He came in with a big scratch on his arm.

I've examined him, given him medicine

and applied a bandage,

but his scratch is still swollen and itchy.

Brad: Oh...

Yadina: Hm.

But if you already gave him

medicine AND a bandage,

what else can you do?

Mary: When the first treatment doesn't work,

you gotta find another.

There are many ways to help someone feel better.

Hmmm...

Oooh! What about aloe for the itching?

Mary's Mom: Ah, Good idea!

You go on ahead, I'll be out to get it in a moment.

Mary: Ok Mama!

[to kids] C'mon let's go!

This is Mama's healing garden.

A lot of these plants are like the ones in West Africa,

where her ancestors are from.

Brad: Wait, wait, wait, wait.

Plants can heal people?

Mary: Yes! Different plants

are used for different problems.

This is fever grass.

It's great for colds and fevers.

And that's Sasparilla.

It's good for easing pain in your joints,

like elbows and knees.

Xavier: How do you know all this?

Mary: My mama learned it from her mama,

who learned it from her mama, who-

-well, you get the idea.

And now she's teaching me!

Yadina: Hey, maybe one of these plants will help Brad

get back on his bike!

Xavier: Oh yeah. Good idea!

[rustling]

Hmm...

♪♪

Mary: [off screen] Ah ha! Found it!

This is an aloe plant.

The sticky gel inside helps with itchiness and swelling.

Perfect for Errol's scratch.

Mary's Mom: I'll snip this...

Grind this out...

There. Ready.

You go on, Mary.

Mary: Don't worry Errol, this won't hurt a bit.

It's gonna be okay.

Errol: Huh-huh!

Aaah! It's not so itchy anymore!

Mary: That means it's working.

The swelling will go down soon too,

since you've stopped scratching.

Mary's Mom: Mary, keep an eye on Errol

until he's ready to go home, okay?

Mary: Yes, mama!

Errol: Uuuh!

Mary: What's wrong, Errol?

Errol: My tummy feel all funny and swirly.

Xavier: Oh, no!

Mary: Well..

Mama already gave you a check-up,

so I don't think you're sick.

And we've dressed your arm...

Remember, there are many ways

to help someone feel better.

Errol must need something else.

Hmmm...

Yadina: [whispers to Dr. Zoom] I hope he's okay.

Mary Seacole: [gasps]

Here, Errol, take Miss Mabel.

She gives great hugs. Try it!

Better? Errol: Yes.

Xavier: How did you know a doll would help?

Mary: It sounded like he was feeling nervous

after mama left.

He just needed a little comfort.

Yadina: Comfort?

Mary: Treating people with kindness and compassion,

that's another way to help someone.

Brad: [sighs]

Yadina: Xavier? Maybe Brad

needed a bit more compassion

after he fell off his bike.

Turtle bandages are great,

but they don't fix everything.

Xavier: I think you're right, Yadina.

Errol is feeling a lot better.

[boing] What? What is it?

Is it the iguana?!

Yadina: I think it went home.

And it's time for us to go home, too.

Xavier: I'll find you someday, iguana!

Thanks for your help, Mary.

Mary: You're welcome!

Mary/Errol: Bye!

Yadina: Berby, let's go home!

Berby: [blar bloop]

[zap]

Xavier: [sighs] Always good to be back.

Brad: Mhm. Just one question:

Why did we come back?

It's not to ride bikes, is it? Cause I don't think I'm ready...

Xavier: How 'bout a hug instead?

Bring it in, buddy.

Brad: A hug? Yes, please!!

Hm, aaah!

Hugs... Berby: [blar bloop]

Brad: Mmmmmm...

Yadina: Well, when you fell off your bike,

we only thought about helping you one way:

the turtle bandage way.

Xavier: But we should've listened

to how you were feeling on the inside too,

and shown more compassion.

Brad: Thanks.

Berby: [blee blar bloop]

Brad: This does help me feel better.

We can ride bikes now if you want.

But, I don't think I wanna go fast again just yet.

Xavier: No problem!

We can go nice and slooooooooooow.

Brad: [giggles]

We can go a bit faster than that.

All: [laugh]

♪♪

Xavier: An iguana! FINALLY!

Yadina: [giggle]

Meeting Mary Seacole

was AMAZING!

When she grew up,

she travelled all over the world

to help heal people.

Xavier: She even set-up her very own hotel in Europe,

where she could treat wounded soldiers.

No matter what side they were on.

Brad: And she did it using medicine,

plant-based healing, nourishing food,

and lots of compassion.

Yadina: Thanks for joining our awesome adventure

to meet Mary Seacole.

Xavier: Who used to be a kid,
