Yadina: Me and Dr. Zoom LOVE to dance!

Y'know who else loved to dance?

Alvin Ailey!

Alvin was born in Texas in the year .

When he grew up, he became an amazing dancer

and choreographer.

Brad: A choreographer is someone who puts different steps

together to create a dance routine.

Xavier: Alvin's dances were totally different

from others at the time.

Yadina: They were inspired by his culture

and the music he grew up with.

Brad: That made them really special,

and important to the Black community.

Yadina: Whooo! [giggles]

Now let's start the show!

Yadina: Xavier! Brad! Guess what?Brad/Xavier: [startled]

Xavier: [giggle] What is it, Yadina?

Yadina: I'm getting a singing solo in the school concert!

Brad: You get to sing all by yourself?

Yadina: Mhm! Xavier: That's great!

You're gonna be ah-mazing!

Yadina: Thank you!

I'm a little nervous, but I'm super excited.

Huh? What are you making?

Xavier: It's a welcome banner for Aunt Lucia.

Yadina: Oh yeah, Aunt Lucia's visiting.

[gasps] And she can come to the school concert!

Hmm...what does it say?

Xavier: [reading Spanish] "Bienvenida Tia Lucia."

That's, "Welcome Aunt Lucia" in Spanish.

Yadina: Of course! Aunt Lucia speaks Spanish.

Wait...

All the songs in the school concert are in English!

Xavier: Ooh. I'm not sure she understands much English.

Yadina: If Aunt Lucia can't understand the songs,

she might feel left out...

What am I going to do?!

Xavier: I don't know.

[gasps] But I do know where we can go to find out...

That's who we're going to meet.

Yadina: I wonder how Alvin Ailey can help Aunt Lucia

feel included at the school concert?

Xavier: There's only one way to find out...

and colour the welcome banner some more!

Yadina: Here we go!

We're at a school! Berby: [whirring]

Yadina: I don't see Alvin...

Xavier: [whispers] That's Alvin Ailey.

Alvin: ..four and five.. Xavier: Hello!

Alvin: [startled] Oh! Yadina: Hi, there!

Xavier: Sorry!

Didn't mean to startle you.

Brad: Yep! Happens to me aaaaall the time.

Yadina: So, Alvin, what were you humming?

Alvin: It's a song me and my mama used to listen to at home.

We filled the house with music.

It taught me that music and dance

can bring people together.

Uhm--I was humming it to distract myself.

Today's my first day at a new school and--

I'm a bit nervous.

[nervous laugh]

Xavier: Your first day?

Oh, that explains why you're going the wrong way!

The school is over there.

Alvin: Thanks, but, that's my OLD school.

None of the other kids look or sound like me.

I felt kind of lonely there.

Yadina: I'm worried that's how my Aunt Lucia will feel

when she comes to my concert.

She speaks Spanish,

but all of our songs are in English.

Alvin: Today I start a brand new school.

But, I don't know if I'll fit in there, either.

Xavier: Maybe...we can go with you?

Alvin: Okay. Thanks.

Yadina: So, this is your school?

but I still don't know how to

help Aunt Lucia feel included

at my school concert.

we're in New York city. years later.

Yadina: Hey, look what Dr. Zoom found!

Yadina: Alvin! You're a dancer now?

Alvin: Yes! I loved music and dance so much,

I became a dancer AND choreographer.

That's someone who puts different movements together

to create a dance.

Xavier: Whoa!

Yadina: Woah, they're amazing!

Alvin: My dream is to use music and dance

to bring people together.

Especially the black community.

Xavier: What do you mean?

Alvin: Well, there haven't been many opportunites for folks

who look like me in classical dance.

But I want to change that.

I want to create a space that's open to people

from all backgrounds.

Yadina: But, how can you do that?

Alvin: By featuring Black dancers,

and music and movement that's familiar to my community.

I'm hoping that will help Black audiences feel welcomed

and included at my shows.

And who knows,

maybe more Black kids will want to become dancers!

Or even choreographers.

[laughs]

[claps] Wonderful!

Now let's try something else...

Yadina: Do you think Alvin can really bring

whole communities together?

Xavier: I don't know, Yadina.

Brad: I do know I'm excited to see this dance, though.

Yadina: [off screen] Alvin's dreams are coming true!

He's really using music and dance

to bring people together.

Helping them feel included.

So, maybe I can use music and dance

to help Aunt Lucia feel included

at my school concert!

Xavier: Brad! This is my Aunt Lucia.

Brad: Um, hi.

[gasps] They're starting! [audience applause]

Xavier: [hushed] Yadina's going to sing her part in Spanish.

Yadina: Learning my lines in Spanish wasn't easy,

but seeing how happy Aunt Lucia was,

made it SO worth it!

Xavier: Alvin Ailey went on to open his very own dance school,

and he choreographed dances!

Yadina: Alvin's dance group and school are still going today,

giving ALL people the opportunity

to come together, and dance.

She was an author.

Yadina: That's someone who writes books.

Brad: She was born on Prince Edward Island, in Canada,

in the year .

Yadina: Life there was sometimes lonely for her.

Brad: But luckily, she had her imagination to keep her company!

Guess it's time to start the show!

Yadina: Ugh!

Xavier: You're only going to Auntie's for one night, Yadina.

Lucy Maud: Mhm! I'm Lucy Maud.

But you can just call me Maud.

Yadina: And you can call us- Yadina, Dr. Zoom,

Brad, and Xavier.

But sometimes I call him brother.

Do you have a big brother who taught you how to read?

Lucy Maud: No. I taught myself.

I don't have any big brothers.

Or little brothers.

Or sisters for that matter. Yadina: Oh.

Lucy Maud: My mother passed away when I was little,

and my father left to find work.

So, it's just me and my grandparents here.

Xavier: There aren't any other kids here for you to play with?

Do you ever feel lonely?

Lucy Maud: Yes. Sometimes.

But when I'm feeling lonely,

my imagination can keep me company.

Xavier: Your imagination? What do you mean?

Lucy Maud: Happy to show you! Follow me!

and even play games with them.

the fir and maple stood.

But the old tree that I loved the best

grew in the Haunted Wood.

Yadina: Hey, Dr. Zoom, that's the perfect climbing tree.

Let's go!

Lucy Maud: And I think I'll collect some mushrooms

for my grandparents.

Xavier: I think so.
