For our first day of camp,

we're going on a hike.

Max: A long walk in nature.

Sam: Hi, I'm Sam, and today I'm making a tie-dye shirt.

Hi Arielle. Arielle: Hi Sam.

Are you ready to make your shirt?Sam: Yes.

Arielle: Do you know why it's called tie-dye?

Sam: Because you tie it, and then you dye it.

Arielle: That's right! Let's get started.

Alright so first, we're gonna take our shirt.

We're gonna dunk it in this water.

So, you're gonna ring it out,

and then you're gonna want to spread it out

on the table like this.

So, we've got all kinds of patterns that we can make,

depending on how we twist the shirt.

So first we could do a swirl pattern.

So, you do that by taking the middle,

and you kind of swirl it up like this with your fingers.

Do you want to try? Sam: Yeah.

Arielle: Great!

Sort of scooch it in here,

put it all together. Awesome!

So now we're gonna take some rubber bands,

I'll do the first one for you.

And we're just gonna make sure that everything

is really tight on here.

So, there's one. You want to do the next one?

Sam: Yup.

Arielle: Perfect.

And now we can pick our colors.

So, what colors do you think you want to do today?

Sam: I think I'd like to do blue, green, and yellow.

Arielle: Nice choice! Ok.

So you can pick which section

you want to put the blue on.

So you see how these make little triangles?

Sam: Yes.

Arielle: So, we're going to try and cover as much of the white

as we can.

It's gonna look great.

There we go, this is gonna be a great shirt!

Sam: I think it looks great.

Arielle: We're gonna let this shirt dry, but

I have this one all ready and made just for you.

Amira: It's a shirt with different colors

Amira: It's called tie-dye

because you tie up the shirt with rubber bands like this,

and then add different colors with dye.
