- Whoo-hoo!

- I've been really lucky

to work all over the world,

but one day,

when I was working in Italy,

my luck nearly ran out.

[whistle toots]

All aboard for a big adventure!

[whistle toots]

[Thomas]

Thomas' Not-So-LuckyDay.

- Wow!

- Whoa, wow!

[whistle blows]

- Ciao, Thomas!

This most special of days

has arrived at last!

[Thomas]

What special day?

Is it Wear Unusual Things

Around Our Buffers Day?

- This is a cornicello,

an Italian good luck necklace.

Today is going to be

a very lucky day indeed!

- It is?

- Of course!

It's Friday the th!

- Oh.

Where I come from,

Friday the th is unlucky.

- Lucky you're in Italy, then!

- Nobody in Italy believes

in silly superstitions

like those anymore.

- What's a superstition?

- A superstition is

something people believe

will bring them

good or bad luck.

[metal clanging]

- Tocca ferro!

[laughs]

- What?

Is that Italian for "Sorry I

bumped into you for no reason?"

- [laughs]

No, it means "touch iron,"

which brings good luck,

and your buffer is made of iron.

- You two spent too long

stuck down that mine.

You're still stuck in the past!

There's no such thing as luck.

If you think positively

that good things will happen,

then you'll have a good day.

[whistle blows]

[harp flourish]

- [gasps]

I hope there aren't

bananas in those cars!

- Why?

What's wrong with bananas?

- Some people believe

carrying bananas is bad luck--

at sea, anyway.

- [Thomas laughs]

That's the most bananas thing

I've ever heard!

But don't worry.

I'm delivering salt.

- [gasps]

[dramatic musical flourish]

Salt?

Do not spill it!

That would be far worse

than carrying bananas!

Very bad luck indeed!

[whistle toots]

Mia, do you believe

in superstitions?

- [laughs]

I don't think so, Thomas.

The best way to make things

go your way is to work hard.

- Now that I can do!

[whistle toots]

Digging for gold again, Ester?

- [laughs]

No such luck, Thomas.

I'm just--

- Brava, Ester!

- Huh? What have I done?

[whistle blows]

- You've turned right.

- Turning right

is very good luck.

- [laughs]

But that's a silly

superstition!

If I keep turning right,

I just go round in circles.

- [laughs]

- [gasps]

Mamma mia!

- Wow!

What good luck!

- What did I tell you?

[whistle toots]

[Thomas]

I wondered whether I'd havegood luck if I turned right.[quirky music]

- Thomas!

Stop!

Never go under a ladder!

[seagulls chirping]

It's very bad luck!

- Huh?

- [splat]

- Eww!

♪ ♪

[whistle blows]

- [inhales deeply]

- [inhales deeply]

♪ ♪

[both whining]

- Are you okay?

- [exhales]

Absolutely fine!

Just holding our breath

in the tunnel.

- It's good luck!

♪ La! ♪

[gasps]

Oh!

- What's the matter now?

- I've just hit a top C!

It's my highest note ever!

- It is the greatest luck!

- Surely it's nothing

to do with...

[traffic sign clicks]

Luck.

[upbeat music]I was so busy thinking abouteveryone else's good luckthat I didn't lookwhere I was going.

[gasps]

Oh, no!

[brakes squealing]

Oof!

[crash]

[gasps]

Oh, no!

- [gasps]

[dramatic music]

Spilled salt!

That's very bad luck.

- You could reverse

the bad luck

by throwing salt

over your shoulder.

- But I don't have shoulders!

[cries out]

No, not working!

Oh!

[cat meows]

[gasps] Oh, no!

A black cat!

I know those are bad luck.

- [cat purring]

Oh, I'm having

a very unlucky day!

Maybe I need to follow your

silly superstitions after all.

I need as much luck

as I can get

if I'm ever going

to deliver these cars.

- I shall teach you

everything I know

as long as you stop

calling them silly.

First, you'll need

a cornicello.

[hopeful music]

Second, remember to touch iron.

Tocca ferro!

♪ ♪

- Tocca ferro!

- And turn right at all times.

- Righto!

I'm turning right.

[gasps]

[traffic sign clicks]

Yes!

♪ ♪

- Definitely

no ladders or black cats!

- [gasps]

[cat meows]

[grunts]

Phew!

Oof.

- And always

hold your breath in tunnels.

- [inhales]

[tense music]

[whining]

[exhales]

Not before long,I was back on track.

- [traffic sign clicks]

- [laughs]

[upbeat music]

[whistle toots]

- [laughs]

You made it!

Well done, Thomas.

- Oh, it wasn't down to me.

Thanks to Lorenzo's

superstitions,

I had luck on my side.

- [scoffs]

No, Thomas.

It was because

you were feeling positive,

and believed good things

would happen.

- And worked hard.

- So luck has nothing

to do with it?

♪ ♪

- [operatic singing]

♪ Tocca ferro! ♪

- [cat meows]

[cat meows]

[screams]

Oh, no!

I've lost my top C!

[cheerful music]♪ ♪

[whistle toots]

- Do you ever feel unlucky?

Like you're having

a really bad day?

[steam whooshing]

Once, Percy was havinglots of bad luck,so Stephen gave him his luckyhorseshoe to cheer him up!Percy thought the horseshoewas giving him good luck,but it had fallen off.He was having a lucky daybecause he wasthinking positively.When I was workingon the Italian railway,I thoughtI was having bad luck.Things were not goingvery well.But eventually,my luck changed.You don't need to havea lucky horseshoeor follow any superstitionsto have a good day.

[steam whooshing]

You can have good luck

and bad luck.

I also learned

that by believing good things

will happen to you

and working hard,

you can create your own luck.

- [Annie] Come on, Thomas!

- It's time to go.

- See ya next time!

[whistle toots]
